00:00In regards to sibling relationships, licensed family and sibling therapist Dr. Karen Gale-Lewis says
00:06whether you like them or not, they're there. In adulthood, sibling dynamics can often grow
00:11distant and strained, and moving through differences to reconnect again can be difficult.
00:16Lewis shares some suggestions in light of National Siblings Day to repair your relationship with your
00:21family members. Start by instigating a conversation about why the distance exists in the first place.
00:28Everybody wants to be heard, so remain open and try not to be defensive.
00:33A helpful hint is to use agree to disagree, perhaps more often than you'd want. Don't
00:38expect to dive in headfirst. Instead, ease in with a more active approach, including your choice of
00:44meetup. Consider a museum or movie, that way the focus isn't entirely on the conversation.
00:50Timing is always a factor in relationship recovery, so it's okay if your sibling isn't ready.
00:55Respect it and then try again.
