00:00:00Hey, welcome back to the Cycle World Podcast. I'm Mark Hoyer, Editor-in-Chief. I'm with Kevin Cameron, our Technical
00:00:04Editor.
00:00:06We have a special edition today. We're just going to drop this on a Monday because Ducati's revealed the 2027
00:00:13Ducati Superleggera V4 Centenario 100th anniversary.
00:00:20Kind of an unlimited, ultra-exotic superbike. Like, who else is living in this space in motorcycling?
00:00:27I guess maybe Harley did with the 110-inch bagger, you know, with the bagger race bike parts on it,
00:00:36but it's not quite as a step this far, I guess.
00:00:41We have a carbon fiber fork from Ohlins, lightened suspension from Ohlins, both ends.
00:00:48I think the fork is something on the order of 34% lighter than your conventional, you know, aluminum upper.
00:00:56Those metal tubes are such a bludgeon. Imagine that in a bar fight.
00:01:03Yes, indeed. You know, it's, well, when you pick up carbon fiber bodywork, it feels like a potato chip.
00:01:10It's remarkable how much lighter it is than fiberglass.
00:01:14The engine is 225 horse and street trim, and then when you put the fancy Akrabovich pipe on, which is
00:01:21absolutely sneaky and beautiful.
00:01:25It is so sneaky.
00:01:26Yeah, and you get a map.
00:01:28Right, you get the map with it.
00:01:30You know, the abbreviated under-engine exhaust is replaced by serpents going out the rear.
00:01:36It's just titanium serpents. It's gorgeous.
00:01:39The map comes with that, and then Ducati wants you to run the racing super special oil, and that gets
00:01:45you to 247, 250 clean horsepower.
00:01:47Three and a half horsepower from the oil, and the oil is not 98 cents a quart.
00:01:55What is?
00:01:56Water?
00:01:57What is 98 cents a quart?
00:02:01Water, I suppose so.
00:02:03So it's a beautiful, exotic thing, 500 units for the world.
00:02:08We don't know the price yet.
00:02:10It's a 27.
00:02:11I think we're going to live on hype for a while and just enjoy the technicality of it,
00:02:16and then those who can afford it probably aren't thinking that much about the price anyway.
00:02:25What struck you, Kevin, about this kind of when you first looked at it?
00:02:30Well, for years, of course, we've all seen the reveal of new models quoting that the water pump is two
00:02:44ounces lighter and what have you.
00:02:45Long list of this.
00:02:47And so lightweighting, as the car people call it, is a constant pastime in the motorcycle business.
00:02:54But I think Ducati have taken it to a new low, at least numerically, because I remember being at the
00:03:08intro of the V4,
00:03:12and they had one on the stand, and the material with it said 142 pounds with the intake system.
00:03:23Now, this engine is supposed to be, what, seven pounds lighter.
00:03:26So to get seven pounds off of something as tightly calculated to purpose as a high-performance engine means that
00:03:40a lot of parts are going to have to be rethought,
00:03:44going to have to say, well, you know, we have this new process that we're putting in for production that
00:03:53can do this more complicated heat treat on castings.
00:03:58So maybe we could go back through, do the dynamic FEA, and see where we could save a bit everywhere.
00:04:09And steel, it sort of hurts to have to use steel in a world in which steel has given way
00:04:19to titanium and titanium to carbon fiber.
00:04:24But, so far, no gearbox shafts made out of CFRP.
00:04:31So what they have to do then is go through and do the things that are done in racing departments,
00:04:39and that is to just turn the shift drum into filigree.
00:04:44So that the metal that's there conducts the stress of pushing the shift forks, click, click, click,
00:04:53to the rolling element bearings on either end of the shift drum.
00:04:57No more plane bearing shift drums these days.
00:05:01Through a minimum of metal.
00:05:03For example, the crankshaft.
00:05:07Ducati crankshafts are not, you wouldn't want to drop it on your foot,
00:05:11but it wouldn't permanently cripple you.
00:05:15The thing is light.
00:05:17And you pick one up and compare it with having done curls with a Triumph Trident crankshaft.
00:05:27No, it's a thing of beauty.
00:05:28I mean, it's just reduced to a little blade, tiny pork chop blades,
00:05:33and very much just, here's the main, or here's the rod,
00:05:38and then thin little blades and little candy bars.
00:05:42Straight to the main shafts, yes.
00:05:43Yeah.
00:05:44And they have, instead of steel counterweights,
00:05:49shaped, you know, the pork chop look.
00:05:52I wish I had some now.
00:05:56What they've done is to put enough steel there to position and keep in place tungsten slugs
00:06:07at a maximum radius so that they get the eye,
00:06:12the moment of inertia that the crankshaft needs,
00:06:15at the minimum investment of weight.
00:06:19So, in that respect, it reminded me of Iramadri's long six-cylinder 250 crank,
00:06:28and the so-called cheeks or webs or flywheels were reduced to narrow candy bars,
00:06:37two tungsten slugs at one end, a crank pin or a hole for one at the other end.
00:06:42Now, of course, this...
00:06:44Yeah, go ahead.
00:06:45Well...
00:06:46Well, I want you to dive into the idea of lightening the crank so much
00:06:53and then concentrating the weight,
00:06:55talking about the way that the inertia works
00:06:57rather than just the mass of the crank statically.
00:07:00Sure.
00:07:01Yes.
00:07:02Well, when you measure the eye, the moment of inertia around its axis of a crankshaft,
00:07:13it is a kind of summing of each element of mass times its distance from center.
00:07:25So, ideally, the counterweights would be this thin layer of tungsten,
00:07:32which is much denser than steel,
00:07:36with just enough steel there to keep the tungsten from flying through the crankcase.
00:07:44And that's essentially what they've done here.
00:07:46They've said, how can we focus, concentrate this mass as far from the center as possible
00:07:53and take away the mass that has just been there to get from here,
00:07:59from the center line, out to where a big blob of steel is located?
00:08:05So, we're going to densify that steel into the tungsten slugs
00:08:09and we're going to leave just enough steel to retain them
00:08:14at a maximum distance from center line
00:08:17so that if you were to hang the crankshaft from a steel wire
00:08:24and wind it up and let go of it,
00:08:27it would ponderously swing back and forth
00:08:35at the same rate as if you had the all-steel crankshaft
00:08:40with the same rotational inertia or eye.
00:08:49So, polar moment.
00:08:51So, this is a way to achieve what a crankshaft must do,
00:08:58which is to carry the engine through compression during idle.
00:09:02If it's not big enough to do that, it's not a practical engine, is it?
00:09:07So, there has to be enough mass there
00:09:11to carry through compression when the engine is on idle
00:09:14or when the rider grabs a handful when the light is showing,
00:09:20the green is fading and the pinkish tinge is showing around the edges.
00:09:24So, this is a way to attenuate the crankshaft,
00:09:32to reduce the mass of the whole motorcycle, by the way,
00:09:37by taking away mass that was underutilized previously.
00:09:42What they're doing now is they have enough mass to hold those tungsten slugs out
00:09:48at a maximum radius where they will do the most good,
00:09:52provide the most flywheel effect without having masses of steel flowing all over the map
00:09:58to act as the counterweight themselves.
00:10:03Now, tungsten counterweights are not new.
00:10:10Cosworth, no, it wasn't Cosworth.
00:10:12It was Coventry Climax.
00:10:17In the very early days, they didn't want to enlarge their crankcase,
00:10:21but they needed more flywheel mass, so they used depleted uranium,
00:10:27which has a density of around 23, I think,
00:10:31whereas steel is 7.8.
00:10:35So, you can see how, if you're trying to put more flywheel effect
00:10:41into a crankcase of fixed size,
00:10:44that you would put tungsten out as far from the center line as you could
00:10:48with enough steel to hold it there so that it doesn't patooey fly out.
00:10:53Well, sir, our mass expectations in daily life, Kevin,
00:10:57don't include depleted uranium,
00:10:59and they usually don't include carbon fiber bodywork
00:11:03or titanium expansion chambers,
00:11:06things that were thrown at me across the shop at Yamaha
00:11:10way back in the day when they were building factory,
00:11:13these one-off Supercross motocross bikes,
00:11:17and a guy in the racing department throwing an expansion chamber,
00:11:21tossing it to me, like, think fast,
00:11:24and all I can think of is,
00:11:26ow, this is going to hurt because I'm a steel guy,
00:11:28and then here's this thing that seems impossibly light.
00:11:31Makes a soft landing in your hand.
00:11:33Just like the bodywork, the fairing on the bag.
00:11:36I had a similar experience at Daytona.
00:11:39He didn't throw it at me, but he said, how about this?
00:11:43He handed me a complete inline-four exhaust system muffler,
00:11:48header pipes, all that stuff.
00:11:52Seven pounds.
00:11:55And so many street bikes, the exhaust system weighs 40 pounds.
00:12:00It does, man.
00:12:02You want to know how to lose 33 pounds of ugly fat?
00:12:07Well, there's plenty of steel,
00:12:09and then they go and put these really high-dense materials,
00:12:11high-density materials, such as platinum, in the cats.
00:12:15So it's not light.
00:12:18Well, there's not much platinum there.
00:12:20It's highly effective, though.
00:12:25So this motorcycle has been gone over in great detail.
00:12:30And to lighten the engine by several pounds,
00:12:34from a weight that is already less than that of the TZ750s,
00:12:42two-strokes, four-cylinder bikes that I used to mess with,
00:12:47their engines weighed 140 pounds.
00:12:50And they seemed pretty ponderous.
00:12:57But what's happening, of course,
00:12:59is that continuing analysis of how best to manage the stresses
00:13:07that the engine produces within itself,
00:13:10using the smallest possible amount of metal,
00:13:13has advanced and continues to advance.
00:13:16And it's the same in aviation.
00:13:21You're trying to work with the good old equation,
00:13:25F, force, equals mass times acceleration.
00:13:29F equals MA.
00:13:32And, or the rocket people like to say,
00:13:36acceleration equals the thrust divided by the mass.
00:13:41So as the mass gets smaller,
00:13:45it divides in more,
00:13:47and A becomes larger,
00:13:49to the point that you,
00:13:51oh, I feel a little oozy here,
00:13:54as your vehicle accelerates.
00:13:56So the motorcycle,
00:14:02the parts,
00:14:03the individual parts of the vehicle,
00:14:05acquire a beauty that is given by nature
00:14:09and is uncovered by humanity.
00:14:13Because essentially,
00:14:14the parts are coming to resemble the stresses they have to carry.
00:14:20And the engine is just a lovely thing to look at.
00:14:23Well, that's just art in a nutshell, isn't it?
00:14:28That's great.
00:14:29Nice.
00:14:30Yeah.
00:14:32The, you know,
00:14:33the usual things,
00:14:34the valves are the same size as before,
00:14:3734 intakes,
00:14:38what is it,
00:14:3827 and a half exhaust.
00:14:39And I think the bunch of other things
00:14:45have been carried forward.
00:14:47So this leaves us with the question,
00:14:51so 225 horsepower,
00:14:52where is it coming from?
00:14:54We hope in the fullness of time
00:14:56that they will be more forthcoming about this.
00:14:59Are there longer cam timings?
00:15:01Maybe not,
00:15:02because how are you going to get that motorcycle
00:15:05past the gray men of Brussels,
00:15:08the European Commission,
00:15:10because it has to meet all those standards
00:15:12to be a roadable motorcycle.
00:15:15So probably not.
00:15:16They haven't increased the overlap timing,
00:15:19which allows intake to just,
00:15:22oh, I'm going out here.
00:15:24Freedom.
00:15:25Out the short-circuiting intake to exhaust.
00:15:30So more compression,
00:15:34faster combustion.
00:15:36What they did say,
00:15:37the Desmond Sedici Stradale R1100 engine
00:15:41features hand-tuned Desmondrovic valve timing.
00:15:44So what does that mean?
00:15:46I mean, is it just set?
00:15:48It means that they didn't line up the marks
00:15:49when they built the engine.
00:15:51That's what it means to me anyway.
00:15:52Because usually,
00:15:54I had a cam grinder tell me that once.
00:15:57I'm telling him,
00:15:59I'm not getting the numbers
00:16:01that are on your cam ticket.
00:16:05And he said,
00:16:05just the line I'm up of the marks.
00:16:10Yeah, well, it's, yeah.
00:16:11Anytime I did that,
00:16:12I was sort of always,
00:16:13you know,
00:16:15I went through the process.
00:16:16I got my dial indicator
00:16:17and did the whole deal
00:16:18and rotated it
00:16:19to where you need to rotate it
00:16:20at whatever lift.
00:16:23And then you're supposed to get that measurement.
00:16:25Big degree wheel.
00:16:26For that precise feeling.
00:16:27And that crank is supposed to be in the position.
00:16:30And then you're like,
00:16:31hmm,
00:16:32well,
00:16:32that's not quite there.
00:16:33And then you go to the exhaust
00:16:34and it's like,
00:16:35well,
00:16:35that's not quite there either.
00:16:37And so then you're left with a question of,
00:16:39well,
00:16:39why is this not right?
00:16:40But they,
00:16:41they kind of seem to ballpark it a lot.
00:16:43As you point out,
00:16:44just put it on the marks,
00:16:45man.
00:16:46And,
00:16:47well,
00:16:48okay.
00:16:49I once stood by
00:16:50while somebody built
00:16:51an Aprilia 250
00:16:52in my shop
00:16:53and he said,
00:16:54look,
00:16:54look at this.
00:16:55Come over here.
00:16:56He said,
00:16:57two pistons
00:16:58don't come to TDC
00:16:59at the same time.
00:17:01Now,
00:17:03Aprilia,
00:17:03I'm sure,
00:17:04knew that.
00:17:05And they also knew
00:17:06that if you were serious,
00:17:08you would arrange
00:17:09for them
00:17:09to hit TDC together.
00:17:11Well,
00:17:12that's the best
00:17:12crankshaft,
00:17:13people,
00:17:14is when you get your crank back
00:17:15and you can set your mic
00:17:16by the diameter
00:17:17of the journals.
00:17:19That they're all the same.
00:17:20And then if you measure stroke,
00:17:22that all the strokes
00:17:23are exactly the same.
00:17:24And when you get
00:17:24a proper crank person,
00:17:26that's what you get.
00:17:28Yep.
00:17:29So,
00:17:30that's probably the meaning
00:17:33as to the,
00:17:34as to the timing.
00:17:35The photograph
00:17:37that shows
00:17:37the combustion chamber
00:17:38does not show
00:17:40a
00:17:40machined shape.
00:17:42It shows
00:17:42a
00:17:43finely cast
00:17:44shape.
00:17:45And there are the valves.
00:17:47And just by looking
00:17:48at them,
00:17:49you can tell
00:17:49this is a water-cooled engine
00:17:51because with Ducati's,
00:17:53the last of Ducati's
00:17:55air-cooled brigade,
00:17:56the exhaust valves
00:17:57are as small
00:17:58as they can be
00:17:59and as far
00:18:00from each other
00:18:00as possible
00:18:01so that it's possible
00:18:02to cool
00:18:03the metal
00:18:04between them.
00:18:05But when you have
00:18:06a water-cooled engine,
00:18:07no problem.
00:18:09Just run the water
00:18:11where the cooling
00:18:11is wanted.
00:18:14Well,
00:18:15this engine
00:18:16has a dry clutch.
00:18:19That means
00:18:20that it is not
00:18:21bathed
00:18:21in the
00:18:23oil,
00:18:24engine oil,
00:18:24that is shared
00:18:25with the gearbox.
00:18:26Most modern motorcycles
00:18:28are built this way.
00:18:31two-stroke bikes
00:18:32of a previous era,
00:18:34the race bikes,
00:18:35you could put
00:18:36actual gear oil
00:18:37in there
00:18:37if the gears
00:18:39were
00:18:41a little
00:18:41weak.
00:18:43But here,
00:18:45you have to put
00:18:46engine oil
00:18:47to lubricate
00:18:48the gears.
00:18:48The clutch
00:18:49itself
00:18:50is
00:18:52outside
00:18:52of the primary
00:18:54cover.
00:18:55and
00:18:55Ducati
00:18:57have done
00:18:57a wonderful thing
00:18:58by putting
00:18:59neutral
00:19:00at the bottom
00:19:01with a lockout
00:19:03once you get
00:19:05moving,
00:19:05which means
00:19:06it is not
00:19:07possible
00:19:08to accidentally
00:19:09stop in neutral
00:19:10when you were
00:19:11going for first
00:19:12or in first
00:19:14going for second
00:19:14because it isn't
00:19:16there.
00:19:17You can't
00:19:18engage it
00:19:18because it isn't
00:19:19there.
00:19:20And we don't
00:19:21need the extra
00:19:22space.
00:19:22We don't need
00:19:23the travel.
00:19:24It's just
00:19:24another gear
00:19:25selection
00:19:26in exactly
00:19:27the same
00:19:29shift movement
00:19:30as the other
00:19:30Yeah, the spacing
00:19:31of the little
00:19:32dents and the
00:19:33detent that holds
00:19:34it in the
00:19:34different ratios.
00:19:35Click, click,
00:19:36click.
00:19:37And then
00:19:38they told us
00:19:39or then
00:19:40they teased
00:19:42a little by
00:19:42saying,
00:19:43and why
00:19:43do we have
00:19:45a dry clutch?
00:19:47Not only
00:19:47because it's
00:19:48very cool
00:19:49and it makes
00:19:50that inimitable
00:19:51jingling noise
00:19:52when you hold
00:19:53the clutch
00:19:53and, oh,
00:19:55dry clutch.
00:19:57Like the
00:19:58old days
00:19:58when the
00:19:59superbike
00:20:00constructors
00:20:01were putting
00:20:01gear drives
00:20:02into their
00:20:03production
00:20:04engines and
00:20:04you could
00:20:05hear it.
00:20:06Anyway, the
00:20:07reason for the
00:20:08dry clutch
00:20:09is that
00:20:11they have
00:20:13a Ducati
00:20:13Corsa,
00:20:14that's Ducati
00:20:15Racing,
00:20:16have a
00:20:17special
00:20:18high-performance
00:20:19oil with
00:20:20friction
00:20:21modifiers
00:20:22which could
00:20:23mean
00:20:23finely
00:20:24divided
00:20:26graphite,
00:20:28molybdenum
00:20:28disulfide,
00:20:30Teflon,
00:20:32various
00:20:35esters
00:20:36which are
00:20:36surface-active,
00:20:38little molecules
00:20:38that stick
00:20:40onto things
00:20:41and are not
00:20:42easily dislodged,
00:20:44three and a half
00:20:44horsepower.
00:20:46Drain out your old
00:20:47oil, pour in
00:20:49the new,
00:20:50possibly more
00:20:50expensive oil
00:20:51and enjoy
00:20:53three extra
00:20:53horsepower.
00:20:54And if your
00:20:55riding is such
00:20:56that you can
00:20:57tell the
00:20:57difference,
00:20:59then I want
00:21:00to see it.
00:21:02But then I
00:21:03ask myself,
00:21:04why are they
00:21:04doing this?
00:21:05Well, one
00:21:05reason could
00:21:06be that the
00:21:08500 lucky
00:21:10people who
00:21:10will probably
00:21:11all will,
00:21:13or the thing
00:21:13will be sold
00:21:14out in 20
00:21:14minutes on
00:21:15the internet
00:21:16and the
00:21:17prices will
00:21:18be high.
00:21:19This money
00:21:20will go a
00:21:20long way
00:21:21to tooling
00:21:24some of
00:21:24this advanced
00:21:26methodology
00:21:27for addition
00:21:29to other
00:21:30products in
00:21:31the future
00:21:31line.
00:21:33It's been
00:21:34a Ducati,
00:21:35you know,
00:21:36it's been
00:21:36their tradition
00:21:36to bring
00:21:37out the
00:21:39next engine,
00:21:41you know,
00:21:41whatever the
00:21:41next engine
00:21:42is going
00:21:42to be,
00:21:43it's always
00:21:43like the
00:21:43last most
00:21:44exotic version
00:21:45of the
00:21:46previous
00:21:46version.
00:21:47And then
00:21:48the new
00:21:48era begins.
00:21:49And so we
00:21:50get a whiff
00:21:50of it.
00:21:50999-R is a
00:21:51great example.
00:21:53That's the
00:21:54Turblanche
00:21:54bodywork,
00:21:55but it has
00:21:56the next
00:21:57engine in
00:21:58it,
00:21:59the great
00:22:00next engine.
00:22:01And,
00:22:02well,
00:22:04you could buy
00:22:04one of those
00:22:05for relatively
00:22:05little money
00:22:06and you're
00:22:06getting quite
00:22:07a motorcycle.
00:22:08It may not
00:22:09visually speak
00:22:10to you in
00:22:11the way that
00:22:11others did
00:22:12before or
00:22:13after,
00:22:13but you're
00:22:14getting a
00:22:15high-quality
00:22:15product there,
00:22:16folks.
00:22:16And so this
00:22:17is a situation
00:22:17where we
00:22:19feel like
00:22:19Ducati's
00:22:20launching its
00:22:21next year
00:22:21and its
00:22:21next engine
00:22:23with this
00:22:24stuff.
00:22:25If you look
00:22:26at one of
00:22:27the side
00:22:27views in
00:22:28the excellent
00:22:28photographs,
00:22:29you will see
00:22:30the engine
00:22:31sump is
00:22:32what I call
00:22:33a dagger
00:22:33sump.
00:22:34It's like
00:22:35a blade
00:22:36that goes
00:22:37down to
00:22:38the lowest
00:22:38part,
00:22:39the lowest
00:22:40point that
00:22:41that can
00:22:41be tolerated
00:22:42and it's
00:22:42not going
00:22:43to hit
00:22:43the ground
00:22:46because what
00:22:46they want
00:22:47is to
00:22:48surround the
00:22:49oil pump
00:22:50pickup with
00:22:52oil even
00:22:53when the
00:22:53motorcycle is
00:22:54on its
00:22:54back tire
00:22:56and the
00:22:57rider is
00:22:57doing crowd
00:23:00interface
00:23:03socializing.
00:23:04Well,
00:23:04any high G,
00:23:05I mean,
00:23:05hard braking
00:23:06anything,
00:23:07you don't want
00:23:07to, you
00:23:08know,
00:23:08when you
00:23:08have these
00:23:08long automotive
00:23:09oil pans,
00:23:10they put
00:23:13one-way
00:23:13flappers in
00:23:14them in
00:23:14addition to
00:23:15having like
00:23:15boxed oil
00:23:17pickups,
00:23:18you know,
00:23:18where they
00:23:18make it
00:23:19harder for
00:23:19it to
00:23:19slosh,
00:23:20they'll
00:23:20actually make
00:23:21trap doors
00:23:21that only
00:23:22work in
00:23:25the direction
00:23:26for hard
00:23:27braking and
00:23:28hard acceleration
00:23:28to keep
00:23:29the oil
00:23:29around the
00:23:29pickup.
00:23:30So that's
00:23:30what we're
00:23:31seeing here
00:23:31in that
00:23:32stab that
00:23:32goes down.
00:23:33Briefly,
00:23:34I would like
00:23:36to go back
00:23:37to the dry
00:23:37clutch.
00:23:39I was
00:23:40recently
00:23:40looking at
00:23:41the Bagger
00:23:41World Cup
00:23:42bikes at
00:23:43Circuit of
00:23:43the Americas
00:23:43during the
00:23:45preseason
00:23:45tests and
00:23:48those bikes
00:23:49have STM
00:23:50dry clutches
00:23:51on the
00:23:52outside of
00:23:52a very
00:23:53finely
00:23:53machined,
00:23:54very tightly
00:23:55packed
00:23:56primary cover.
00:23:57So they've
00:23:57been trying
00:23:58to make
00:23:58the Harley
00:23:58Davidson
00:23:59Bagger
00:24:00race engine
00:24:00more and
00:24:01more narrow.
00:24:02The exhaust
00:24:03pipe is this
00:24:03beautiful
00:24:04titanium
00:24:04thing with
00:24:05castings,
00:24:06titanium
00:24:06castings for
00:24:07the collector
00:24:08so they
00:24:09can make
00:24:09a very
00:24:10precise,
00:24:11thin shape
00:24:12to tuck
00:24:13it in so
00:24:14tight.
00:24:14And they're
00:24:14going for
00:24:1560 degrees
00:24:16on baggers
00:24:17and part of
00:24:17that is
00:24:18tightening up
00:24:18the primary.
00:24:20Now the
00:24:20hottest part
00:24:20of that
00:24:21engine,
00:24:21the Harley
00:24:22engine aside
00:24:23from say
00:24:23the piston
00:24:24crown,
00:24:25the hottest
00:24:25part of the
00:24:25engine is
00:24:26the primary.
00:24:26You're making
00:24:27your churning
00:24:28oil with
00:24:28that big
00:24:29chain in
00:24:30this very
00:24:30tight package
00:24:32and it
00:24:32made a lot
00:24:32of heat.
00:24:33heat and
00:24:35the oil
00:24:37changes with
00:24:38heat.
00:24:38When that
00:24:39stuff gets
00:24:39drained out,
00:24:40it's not
00:24:40honey-colored
00:24:41gorgeous,
00:24:42it's black
00:24:43and highly
00:24:43used.
00:24:44It's really
00:24:45living a life
00:24:46in probably
00:24:46something that's
00:24:47300 degrees
00:24:48plus.
00:24:49They wanted
00:24:50to move the
00:24:50clutch out
00:24:51of that
00:24:51extremely hot
00:24:52variable
00:24:53viscosity
00:24:54environment
00:24:55because the
00:24:56oil was
00:24:56changing and
00:24:58they put a
00:24:58dry clutch
00:24:59on it and
00:24:59it's out
00:24:59there to
00:25:00cool in
00:25:00the air
00:25:01and it's
00:25:02away from
00:25:02that harsh
00:25:03environment.
00:25:03That's what
00:25:05Ducati is
00:25:05doing here.
00:25:06In addition
00:25:06to what
00:25:06Kevin said
00:25:07about friction
00:25:07modifiers,
00:25:08you put a
00:25:09synthetic,
00:25:10a full
00:25:10synthetic in
00:25:11something like
00:25:11your,
00:25:12here's my
00:25:13real-world
00:25:14example,
00:25:1572 Yamaha
00:25:17XS650,
00:25:18the clutch
00:25:18will magically
00:25:19start slipping.
00:25:21There was
00:25:22nothing wrong
00:25:23with the
00:25:23clutch.
00:25:23If you
00:25:23drain that
00:25:24oil out
00:25:24and you
00:25:24put some
00:25:25dino oil
00:25:25back in,
00:25:26clutch is
00:25:26fine.
00:25:28There's a
00:25:28lot at
00:25:29play here.
00:25:30But dry
00:25:30clutch,
00:25:31I mean,
00:25:32isn't that
00:25:33just the
00:25:33historical
00:25:34signature for
00:25:35performance?
00:25:36We're special.
00:25:37That's right
00:25:38because dry
00:25:40clutch was
00:25:40essential when
00:25:41push starting
00:25:42was the
00:25:42way FIM
00:25:44road races
00:25:44began.
00:25:45Or at the
00:25:46Isle of
00:25:46Man when
00:25:47they pushed
00:25:47off one
00:25:48at a time
00:25:48down Bray
00:25:49Hill.
00:25:50These not
00:25:51very large
00:25:52men
00:25:54psyching
00:25:55themselves up
00:25:56to push
00:25:57that 500
00:25:58cc piston
00:25:59through
00:25:59compression
00:25:59at least
00:26:01once.
00:26:02Bang,
00:26:03I'm
00:26:03going.
00:26:05And they
00:26:05ride off
00:26:06with both
00:26:06legs on
00:26:07one side
00:26:07slipping the
00:26:08clutch like
00:26:08crazy.
00:26:09It was
00:26:10quite dramatic
00:26:11in its
00:26:11old-time
00:26:13manner.
00:26:14I think it's
00:26:15a detail
00:26:16lost on
00:26:18people who
00:26:19haven't tried
00:26:20to manually
00:26:20start a
00:26:21one- or
00:26:22two-cylinder
00:26:23engine with
00:26:24the force
00:26:25of your
00:26:25body or
00:26:26the force
00:26:27of your
00:26:27inertia.
00:26:30you only
00:26:31have one
00:26:31chance on
00:26:32a single
00:26:32for the
00:26:34revolution.
00:26:34That's it.
00:26:35There's one
00:26:36chamber.
00:26:37I watched
00:26:37a man
00:26:38hand-crank
00:26:38start an
00:26:39inline
00:26:39eight-cylinder
00:26:41a Buick
00:26:42eight
00:26:42short-track
00:26:44car.
00:26:45An older
00:26:46guy,
00:26:47as he
00:26:48would be.
00:26:49This is
00:26:50not an
00:26:50eight-cylinder
00:26:51short-track
00:26:52cars.
00:26:53Straight
00:26:53eight-cylinder
00:26:54short-track
00:26:54cars are
00:26:55not the
00:26:56sport of
00:26:56the young
00:26:58too much.
00:26:58It doesn't
00:26:59resonate with
00:26:59us.
00:27:02I was
00:27:03impressed,
00:27:03but it
00:27:03was like
00:27:04a seven-to-one
00:27:05motor and
00:27:05it had
00:27:06eight-cylinders
00:27:06and he
00:27:07was hand
00:27:07cranking it
00:27:08from the
00:27:08front of
00:27:09the engine.
00:27:10I said
00:27:10that to
00:27:11him.
00:27:11I said,
00:27:11that's
00:27:11pretty good,
00:27:12but you
00:27:12got eight
00:27:13chances.
00:27:13He just
00:27:14laughed because
00:27:14he knew it
00:27:15was true.
00:27:15He's got
00:27:16eight chances
00:27:17for the
00:27:18mixture to
00:27:18be just
00:27:18so.
00:27:19Just like
00:27:19the big
00:27:20radials,
00:27:21a lot of
00:27:21times they
00:27:22start on a
00:27:22few
00:27:23cylinders
00:27:23just enough
00:27:24to start
00:27:25kicking it
00:27:26and kick,
00:27:27kick,
00:27:27kick,
00:27:28and the
00:27:28crank's
00:27:28going and
00:27:29it says,
00:27:29all right,
00:27:29next cylinder,
00:27:30add yourself
00:27:31in and
00:27:31it finally
00:27:34coughs,
00:27:34coughs,
00:27:35and it
00:27:35smooths out.
00:27:36Anyway.
00:27:37And it
00:27:37blows away
00:27:37all the
00:27:38smoke.
00:27:39Blows away
00:27:39the smoke,
00:27:40yeah.
00:27:40Yeah.
00:27:41Well,
00:27:42back to the
00:27:43crankshaft for
00:27:43a moment,
00:27:44you'll notice
00:27:44that the
00:27:45V4
00:27:46crankshafts,
00:27:46the two
00:27:47crank pins
00:27:48of a V4
00:27:49are normally
00:27:50set at
00:27:50either
00:27:51the
00:27:53180 or
00:27:53360,
00:27:54but these
00:27:55are pulled
00:27:56apart by,
00:27:57the last I
00:27:58knew it was
00:27:5870 degrees,
00:27:59and that's
00:28:00part of the
00:28:01Big Bang
00:28:02traction
00:28:04enhancing
00:28:07equivalent of
00:28:08the Big Bang
00:28:09two-strokes
00:28:10of the early
00:28:121990s.
00:28:13Yeah,
00:28:14so grouping
00:28:14the firing
00:28:15orders closer
00:28:15together to
00:28:16give drivetrain
00:28:18tire some
00:28:19time to relax
00:28:19and reform
00:28:21the tire
00:28:21Now,
00:28:21here's another
00:28:22thing that struck me
00:28:24about the
00:28:25engine,
00:28:25and that is
00:28:26with the
00:28:26crankshaft
00:28:27this light,
00:28:30when the
00:28:31not inconsiderable
00:28:33cylinders fire,
00:28:34the crankshaft
00:28:35accelerates,
00:28:36that is,
00:28:38the firing of
00:28:39all that mixture
00:28:40has put energy
00:28:41into the
00:28:42crankshaft,
00:28:42so it
00:28:43accelerates,
00:28:44and then
00:28:45as the
00:28:46firing pressure
00:28:47dies away
00:28:47and the
00:28:48exhaust valves
00:28:48begin to open,
00:28:51that disappears
00:28:52and the
00:28:53crankshaft
00:28:53slows down.
00:28:55Now,
00:28:57I'm really
00:28:58impressed if
00:28:59all they have
00:29:00to do to
00:29:01make the
00:29:02valves follow
00:29:02the profiles
00:29:03with Desmo,
00:29:05that they can
00:29:06make the
00:29:07crankshaft as
00:29:07light as they
00:29:08want,
00:29:08and it never,
00:29:09the valve
00:29:10system just
00:29:12says,
00:29:12sir,
00:29:13yes,
00:29:13sir,
00:29:15because there
00:29:17are plenty of
00:29:17cases in which
00:29:18people have
00:29:18lightened
00:29:19crankshafts
00:29:20in valve
00:29:21spring motors
00:29:21and lost
00:29:22top end
00:29:24because
00:29:25crankshaft
00:29:26speed variation
00:29:27is transmitted
00:29:28to the
00:29:29camshafts,
00:29:30and if the
00:29:31camshafts'
00:29:32speed is
00:29:32varying like
00:29:33this,
00:29:34what if
00:29:36a valve
00:29:37is opening
00:29:37just as
00:29:38this is
00:29:39peaking,
00:29:40patui,
00:29:41valve flow?
00:29:43But the
00:29:44only thing
00:29:44holding the
00:29:45valve is
00:29:45the spring,
00:29:46and in
00:29:46the Desmo,
00:29:47the closing
00:29:48ramp is
00:29:48keeping it
00:29:49from being
00:29:49thrown to
00:29:51the piston.
00:29:54That is
00:29:54the closing
00:29:55lever,
00:29:55which is
00:29:55L-shaped,
00:29:56but they
00:29:57are beautiful
00:29:57parts.
00:30:00They don't
00:30:01look like a
00:30:01child made
00:30:02them out of
00:30:02modeling clay
00:30:03like the
00:30:03early ones.
00:30:04These have
00:30:05definite
00:30:06shape
00:30:07intended for
00:30:08purpose.
00:30:09Very nice.
00:30:10lovely stuff.
00:30:13Then you
00:30:14look at the
00:30:14frame,
00:30:15and the
00:30:16frame is
00:30:17carbon fiber,
00:30:18but it is
00:30:19clearly
00:30:21unrelated to
00:30:22the 2009
00:30:24rigid
00:30:25pyramid
00:30:26that was
00:30:27built for
00:30:27Casey Stoner
00:30:28to cope
00:30:29with.
00:30:32The rigid
00:30:33bike
00:30:36was
00:30:37prone to
00:30:39being
00:30:40horse
00:30:40long.
00:30:40it was
00:30:41prone to
00:30:44having
00:30:45no front
00:30:45end feel
00:30:46and to
00:30:48unpredictable
00:30:49loss of
00:30:49the front
00:30:50end.
00:30:51Because
00:30:52with no
00:30:53flexibility
00:30:53whatever in
00:30:55the chassis
00:30:55when the
00:30:55motorcycle is
00:30:56at lean
00:30:57angle,
00:30:57it's
00:30:58difficult
00:30:58for the
00:30:59tires to
00:31:01stay in
00:31:02contact
00:31:02after being
00:31:04launched
00:31:04upward
00:31:06by a
00:31:07bump
00:31:07because the
00:31:08whole
00:31:08motorcycle is
00:31:09launched
00:31:09upward,
00:31:09not just
00:31:11parts between
00:31:12the tire
00:31:13and the
00:31:15engine.
00:31:16So,
00:31:17this
00:31:18chassis is a
00:31:19beautiful thing.
00:31:21In one
00:31:21picture you
00:31:21can see
00:31:22that there's
00:31:23a strut
00:31:24or a pair
00:31:25of struts
00:31:25that reach
00:31:26out to the
00:31:26front to
00:31:27grasp the
00:31:28upper steering
00:31:29head bearing
00:31:30bearing and
00:31:31another set
00:31:32that grasped
00:31:33the lower
00:31:33steering
00:31:34head
00:31:34bearing.
00:31:35That area
00:31:36around the
00:31:37steering
00:31:37head is
00:31:38prime real
00:31:39estate because
00:31:40they're trying
00:31:41to get the
00:31:41intake airflow
00:31:42to come
00:31:42through there,
00:31:44trying to
00:31:45get it
00:31:45slowed
00:31:46down into
00:31:47the air
00:31:47box because
00:31:49that's not a
00:31:49gas tank up
00:31:50there.
00:31:52that's an
00:31:53intake air
00:31:53box.
00:31:55They talked
00:31:56about the
00:31:59double-sided
00:32:00carbon fiber
00:32:02swing arm
00:32:03being 21%
00:32:05lighter than
00:32:05an aluminum
00:32:06equivalent.
00:32:08this part
00:32:10is made
00:32:11on a
00:32:14on a
00:32:16mandrel
00:32:16that is
00:32:18destroyed
00:32:18in the
00:32:19process of
00:32:20manufacture.
00:32:21It is as
00:32:22though they
00:32:22used a
00:32:23very hard
00:32:23wax
00:32:24made into
00:32:26the shape
00:32:26of the
00:32:27space they
00:32:27want inside
00:32:29the swing
00:32:29arm and
00:32:30then they
00:32:31applied the
00:32:32resin and
00:32:34carbon fiber
00:32:35and their
00:32:36wrappings and
00:32:38all being
00:32:38stuck into
00:32:40the autoclave
00:32:42eventually to
00:32:44make sure
00:32:44that the
00:32:45inside is
00:32:46as free
00:32:48of flaws
00:32:49and does
00:32:49not have
00:32:50pieces that
00:32:51are delammed
00:32:52and hanging
00:32:53out in
00:32:53space.
00:32:54This
00:32:56consumable
00:32:57mandrel is
00:32:58a wonderful
00:33:00thing and
00:33:00it's very
00:33:01much like
00:33:02a version
00:33:03of lost
00:33:04wax
00:33:04casting.
00:33:06So now
00:33:07they've
00:33:08made this
00:33:08carbon fiber
00:33:10part.
00:33:13It's black.
00:33:14You can't
00:33:15see into
00:33:15it.
00:33:16How do
00:33:16you know
00:33:17if it's
00:33:17good?
00:33:18Or is it
00:33:19riddled
00:33:20with porosity
00:33:23from gas
00:33:24released by
00:33:25the curing
00:33:26process?
00:33:27Are there
00:33:28D-LAMs
00:33:29where parts
00:33:30were almost
00:33:31held together
00:33:31strongly
00:33:33enough by
00:33:34the bagging
00:33:35process but
00:33:36they
00:33:38created a
00:33:40void?
00:33:41Well,
00:33:42these methods
00:33:43are just
00:33:44frantic.
00:33:46In one
00:33:47method,
00:33:47they heat
00:33:48the surface
00:33:48with infrared
00:33:49lights and
00:33:52then they
00:33:52switch them
00:33:53off and
00:33:53quickly do
00:33:55a temperature
00:33:55scan of all
00:33:56the surfaces.
00:33:57and if
00:33:59the heat
00:33:59conductivity
00:34:00of one
00:34:01area is
00:34:01less than
00:34:02that of
00:34:02the others,
00:34:04its temperature
00:34:05won't fall as
00:34:06rapidly because
00:34:06there's no
00:34:07place for the
00:34:07heat to go
00:34:08inward.
00:34:10So,
00:34:12and then a
00:34:13phased array
00:34:14acoustic system.
00:34:16Now,
00:34:17a phased
00:34:17array radar
00:34:19has ranks
00:34:20and rows
00:34:21of radar
00:34:24emitters
00:34:24that are
00:34:26controlled in
00:34:27such a way
00:34:27that they
00:34:28can produce
00:34:29and instantly
00:34:30steer a
00:34:32tightly focused
00:34:33beam with
00:34:35the electronics
00:34:35that are
00:34:36controlling all
00:34:36of this in
00:34:39two dimensions.
00:34:40And with
00:34:41this,
00:34:42they can make
00:34:42a map of
00:34:43the inside
00:34:44of the part.
00:34:45And then
00:34:46finally,
00:34:47CAT scan.
00:34:49So,
00:34:52these parts,
00:34:54I remember
00:34:56Cook Nelson
00:34:56telling me,
00:34:57Ducati have
00:34:58a machine
00:34:59that makes
00:34:59their connecting
00:35:00rods and
00:35:01the machine
00:35:01takes half
00:35:03an hour
00:35:03to make
00:35:04one rod.
00:35:05And I
00:35:05thought,
00:35:07won't sell
00:35:08many of
00:35:08those.
00:35:09vehicles.
00:35:10But of
00:35:11course,
00:35:11Nelson and
00:35:12Schilling so
00:35:13skillfully
00:35:14promoted the
00:35:15motorcycle they
00:35:16were building
00:35:16that Ducati,
00:35:17no doubt,
00:35:18benefited
00:35:19considerably from
00:35:20this.
00:35:24but in
00:35:25order to
00:35:27understand the
00:35:28value of
00:35:29carbon fiber
00:35:30parts,
00:35:30you have
00:35:30to make
00:35:31some,
00:35:32you have
00:35:33to track
00:35:34test them,
00:35:35and in
00:35:36order to
00:35:36do your
00:35:37due diligence
00:35:38for the
00:35:39rider,
00:35:39you have to
00:35:40inspect them
00:35:40before you.
00:35:41too.
00:35:41So this
00:35:42is cool
00:35:43stuff.
00:35:44Well,
00:35:44there's,
00:35:45yeah,
00:35:45you were
00:35:46talking about,
00:35:46you know,
00:35:47radar and
00:35:47all this,
00:35:48and we
00:35:49got to make
00:35:49sure it's
00:35:50free of
00:35:50flaws.
00:35:51I recalled
00:35:53a person I
00:35:54knew who
00:35:54was beginning
00:35:55to braze
00:35:56bicycle frame
00:35:57tubes together
00:35:59as a thing
00:36:00he wanted to
00:36:00do,
00:36:01and he was
00:36:02doing this,
00:36:02and he had
00:36:03these beautiful
00:36:04little casting
00:36:05lugs that you
00:36:05see on
00:36:05bicycles,
00:36:06you know,
00:36:07chromoly stuff,
00:36:08steel,
00:36:09and he
00:36:10would,
00:36:11sweat those
00:36:11things together,
00:36:13and they were
00:36:14sacrificial,
00:36:15he would cut
00:36:15them in half,
00:36:16and he would,
00:36:16he would,
00:36:17you know,
00:36:18rate his
00:36:18temperature and
00:36:19keep a track
00:36:20on that,
00:36:20and that's how
00:36:21he taught
00:36:21himself,
00:36:21was sacrificing
00:36:23the parts over
00:36:23and over again
00:36:24so that he
00:36:24didn't have to
00:36:25cut it apart
00:36:25to know it
00:36:26was good.
00:36:27Oh,
00:36:28yeah,
00:36:29sure.
00:36:31So the
00:36:32frame on
00:36:33this motorcycle
00:36:33is,
00:36:35first of all,
00:36:36a four
00:36:37legs,
00:36:38like an
00:36:38animal,
00:36:39standing on
00:36:40the engine.
00:36:41And on
00:36:43these legs,
00:36:43it is
00:36:44presumably able
00:36:45to move
00:36:45from side
00:36:46to side,
00:36:47but not
00:36:47to twist
00:36:48and not
00:36:49to bend.
00:36:51And then
00:36:52there is
00:36:53the seat
00:36:53frame,
00:36:54and there
00:36:54are all
00:36:56kinds of
00:36:56other little
00:36:57carbon fiber
00:36:58pieces that
00:36:59are attached.
00:37:00Now,
00:37:00I don't know
00:37:01how they
00:37:02attach them.
00:37:03I know
00:37:03what John
00:37:05Britton did.
00:37:05he made
00:37:06aluminum
00:37:07spools
00:37:07and he
00:37:09wrapped the
00:37:10carbon fiber
00:37:10around the
00:37:11spools and
00:37:12ran it off
00:37:13in the
00:37:13directions to
00:37:14carry the
00:37:15stress wherever
00:37:15it was
00:37:16going.
00:37:17And then
00:37:18he wetted
00:37:19that stuff
00:37:20out and
00:37:21sheathed it
00:37:22all in
00:37:24and then
00:37:26cured it
00:37:27in the
00:37:28equivalent of
00:37:28an autoclave.
00:37:30So,
00:37:33I'm going
00:37:34to have to
00:37:35inform myself
00:37:35more about
00:37:36how concentrated
00:37:38loads,
00:37:39how do you
00:37:40attach the
00:37:40landing gear
00:37:41to a
00:37:43carbon fiber
00:37:44aircraft
00:37:45fuselage?
00:37:46Do you
00:37:47drill holes
00:37:47in the
00:37:49plastic and
00:37:49try to
00:37:50thread them?
00:37:51I don't
00:37:52think so.
00:37:52I don't
00:37:53think so.
00:37:54Early
00:37:55carbon...
00:37:56You have
00:37:56to plan
00:37:58how that
00:37:58stress is
00:37:59going to
00:37:59flow to
00:38:00the
00:38:02landing
00:38:02system.
00:38:03Trek
00:38:03bicycles
00:38:04made a
00:38:06mountain
00:38:06bike in
00:38:07the late
00:38:0790s called
00:38:08the Y
00:38:08bike and
00:38:09it was
00:38:10Y shaped.
00:38:11So,
00:38:11the seat
00:38:12tube was
00:38:13not a
00:38:13tube,
00:38:13it was
00:38:13a Y.
00:38:14If you
00:38:14stood
00:38:15the frame
00:38:16up like
00:38:16this,
00:38:16the seats
00:38:17here,
00:38:17the steering
00:38:18head's up
00:38:18here,
00:38:18and then
00:38:19your bottom
00:38:20bracket
00:38:20business is
00:38:20down here.
00:38:21They call it
00:38:22the Y
00:38:22bike because
00:38:22if you held
00:38:23it this
00:38:23way,
00:38:23it looked
00:38:23like a
00:38:24Y.
00:38:24Y bike.
00:38:26And the
00:38:26first ones
00:38:27they made,
00:38:28the shock
00:38:28lug was
00:38:29bonded,
00:38:31externally
00:38:31bonded to
00:38:32this part
00:38:33of the
00:38:33Y.
00:38:33That was
00:38:34the upper
00:38:34lug for
00:38:35the rear
00:38:35shock.
00:38:36Library
00:38:36paste.
00:38:37And let
00:38:38me tell
00:38:38you,
00:38:40it failed
00:38:41and it
00:38:41failed a lot
00:38:42and it
00:38:42failed on
00:38:42my bike.
00:38:43I got a
00:38:44warranty frame
00:38:45out of
00:38:45that and
00:38:46the next
00:38:46version that
00:38:47they gave
00:38:47to me as
00:38:48a warranty,
00:38:48that upper
00:38:49shock lug
00:38:50was incorporated
00:38:51into a
00:38:52stump that
00:38:53stuck out
00:38:53a plug and
00:38:54it was
00:38:55metallic and
00:38:56it penetrated
00:38:57and it was
00:38:57built in
00:38:58to the
00:38:58frame.
00:38:59It had
00:38:59mechanical
00:39:01connection,
00:39:01not just
00:39:02chemical bonding
00:39:03connection.
00:39:04It was
00:39:04definitely the
00:39:05next step.
00:39:08It is
00:39:09landing gear,
00:39:09Kevin.
00:39:09It is
00:39:10landing gear
00:39:10on a
00:39:10mountain
00:39:10bike.
00:39:11Yeah,
00:39:14I always,
00:39:14when I see
00:39:15large aircraft,
00:39:17of course,
00:39:17I always
00:39:18mentally count
00:39:19the main
00:39:20wheels and
00:39:20multiply by
00:39:2150,000 to
00:39:22get some
00:39:22idea of
00:39:23this machine's
00:39:24takeoff
00:39:24weight because
00:39:26that's what
00:39:26those tires
00:39:27are made
00:39:28to bear.
00:39:29That's just
00:39:30a glimpse
00:39:30into Kevin
00:39:31Cameron's
00:39:31daily life,
00:39:32folks.
00:39:35Well,
00:39:37yes,
00:39:37I think
00:39:39about that
00:39:41considerable
00:39:42thump when
00:39:42a big
00:39:43airplane,
00:39:457777,
00:39:46they make
00:39:47the runway
00:39:49at the
00:39:49touchdown area
00:39:50at least
00:39:51three feet
00:39:51deep and
00:39:52it's concrete
00:39:53and it's
00:39:53full of
00:39:54re-rod.
00:39:54It's designed
00:39:55to take
00:39:56the thump.
00:39:59And
00:40:00why,
00:40:01my goodness,
00:40:01re-rod and
00:40:02concrete,
00:40:03it's a
00:40:04composite,
00:40:04isn't it?
00:40:05Just like
00:40:06CFRP.
00:40:09So,
00:40:09the lovely
00:40:10swing arm,
00:40:13Mark talked
00:40:14about the
00:40:15suspension.
00:40:15Now,
00:40:16the brake
00:40:17calipers,
00:40:19they're
00:40:19rather
00:40:22coy about
00:40:23just how
00:40:24it works,
00:40:24but
00:40:25they have,
00:40:26Brembo,
00:40:27have come
00:40:28up with a
00:40:29way to
00:40:29completely
00:40:30release
00:40:32the
00:40:33pads
00:40:34from the
00:40:34disc
00:40:34surface
00:40:35when
00:40:35you're
00:40:35done
00:40:35braking.
00:40:37And they
00:40:38did it
00:40:38as follows.
00:40:40There's a
00:40:40spring that
00:40:41holds the
00:40:42pads
00:40:42toward the
00:40:44rear on
00:40:45a very
00:40:46slight slope
00:40:48and as
00:40:49you apply
00:40:50the brakes
00:40:51and the
00:40:51pads touch,
00:40:52they go
00:40:53click
00:40:53forward
00:40:54slightly
00:40:55up that
00:40:55slope
00:40:57and you
00:40:58do your
00:40:58braking
00:40:58and when
00:41:00you release
00:41:00the brake,
00:41:01the springs
00:41:02pull the
00:41:03pads back
00:41:04down the
00:41:05slope
00:41:06slightly,
00:41:08that part
00:41:09of the
00:41:09slope
00:41:10moves away
00:41:11from the
00:41:12disc surface
00:41:12so the
00:41:13pads are
00:41:13positively
00:41:15retracted.
00:41:16And you're
00:41:17talking about
00:41:19that oblique
00:41:20angle where
00:41:20the pads,
00:41:21so the pads
00:41:22usually slot
00:41:22into the
00:41:23calipers and
00:41:24are held on
00:41:24either end
00:41:25to carry the
00:41:25load when
00:41:26the brakes
00:41:27are applied
00:41:27and so
00:41:28that
00:41:28Yeah,
00:41:29the end
00:41:29of the
00:41:29backing
00:41:29plate has
00:41:30to butt
00:41:30into the
00:41:31backing.
00:41:31Yeah,
00:41:32and so
00:41:32the backing,
00:41:33so we're
00:41:33talking
00:41:33oblique
00:41:34this way
00:41:35to put
00:41:37the pad
00:41:37into the
00:41:38disc.
00:41:39They're giving
00:41:39a slight
00:41:41servo effect,
00:41:42a power
00:41:42boosting
00:41:42effect.
00:41:43Now,
00:41:44to me,
00:41:44this is
00:41:45a level
00:41:46of precision
00:41:47that must
00:41:48have been
00:41:49infuriatingly
00:41:50difficult to
00:41:50achieve because
00:41:52what you're
00:41:53looking at
00:41:54in the old
00:41:55way of
00:41:58getting just
00:41:58enough
00:41:58retraction,
00:41:59you were
00:41:59relying on
00:42:00the rubber
00:42:01seal.
00:42:02And the way
00:42:03that would
00:42:03work is that
00:42:04you would
00:42:05pull the
00:42:05brake and
00:42:05the piston
00:42:06would slide
00:42:07in the
00:42:07seal and
00:42:08then pressure
00:42:08would rise
00:42:09and it
00:42:09would grip
00:42:10the piston
00:42:11and then you
00:42:12would break
00:42:13and then when
00:42:14you released
00:42:14the seal was
00:42:16deforming and
00:42:17allowing the
00:42:17piston to go
00:42:18do its
00:42:19braking thing
00:42:20and it's
00:42:20waiting,
00:42:21it's under
00:42:21tension and
00:42:22when you
00:42:22release the
00:42:22pressure,
00:42:23it pulled
00:42:24the pad
00:42:24back a little
00:42:25bit.
00:42:26Until it's
00:42:27worn enough
00:42:27for the
00:42:28piston to
00:42:28advance a
00:42:29slight amount
00:42:30again.
00:42:31And that's
00:42:32why there
00:42:32can be
00:42:33variations in
00:42:34lever height
00:42:35as this
00:42:36process takes
00:42:37place.
00:42:37Now Kevin
00:42:38got a
00:42:39Brembo guy
00:42:39in trouble
00:42:40one time
00:42:41because they
00:42:41had a
00:42:41delightful
00:42:42dinner
00:42:42conversation
00:42:44and Kevin
00:42:45asked him
00:42:46the question
00:42:46about,
00:42:47well isn't
00:42:48this where
00:42:48all the
00:42:49real action
00:42:49is,
00:42:50is in the
00:42:50rubber seal
00:42:51doing this
00:42:51stuff?
00:42:51And he's
00:42:52like,
00:42:52oh,
00:42:52someone I
00:42:53could talk
00:42:53to and he
00:42:54gave you
00:42:54lots of
00:42:54stuff that
00:42:56was superb.
00:42:57And he was
00:42:59fine,
00:42:59but these
00:43:00are the
00:43:01truths that
00:43:01we're searching
00:43:02for.
00:43:02So we have
00:43:04the opportunity
00:43:04to talk to
00:43:05a Brembo
00:43:05person and
00:43:07we're going
00:43:08to take
00:43:08advantage of
00:43:09that,
00:43:09Kevin.
00:43:10We're going
00:43:10to ask
00:43:10about these
00:43:11calipers.
00:43:11The idea
00:43:12that a
00:43:13spring is
00:43:13retracting
00:43:14the pad
00:43:14sideways,
00:43:17that where
00:43:18the pad,
00:43:19the backing
00:43:20plate is
00:43:21interfacing
00:43:22with the
00:43:22caliper,
00:43:22has an
00:43:23angle to
00:43:24it to
00:43:25coordinate
00:43:26all of
00:43:26that,
00:43:27to make
00:43:27all of
00:43:28that
00:43:28exceptional
00:43:28and beautiful
00:43:29and perfectly
00:43:30repeatable.
00:43:31I got to
00:43:32give him
00:43:32huge credit
00:43:33because just
00:43:33getting regular
00:43:34brakes to
00:43:34work on
00:43:35your pickup
00:43:35truck can
00:43:36be a pain
00:43:37in the ass
00:43:38sometimes.
00:43:39These are
00:43:40the calipers
00:43:41that they're
00:43:41running on
00:43:42the bagger
00:43:42race bikes,
00:43:43like the
00:43:44Harleys and
00:43:44stuff,
00:43:45and they
00:43:48clean them
00:43:48all the
00:43:48time.
00:43:49They've got a
00:43:50quick disconnect
00:43:50and they've
00:43:51cleaned the
00:43:51pistons.
00:43:52That was
00:43:52another thing
00:43:53actually talking
00:43:54about the
00:43:54pistons.
00:43:55The ends
00:43:56of the
00:43:56pistons that
00:43:57are contacting
00:43:58the backing
00:43:58plate are
00:44:00radially
00:44:00drilled to
00:44:03keep heat
00:44:04transfer lower
00:44:05from going
00:44:05into the
00:44:06fluid.
00:44:07Yep,
00:44:07don't want
00:44:08that.
00:44:09How many
00:44:09extra
00:44:10machining
00:44:10steps is
00:44:11that,
00:44:11right?
00:44:12Or,
00:44:13oh,
00:44:13these
00:44:14calipers are
00:44:14machined
00:44:15from billet.
00:44:15The machine
00:44:16that does
00:44:17that is
00:44:17exquisite
00:44:18because the
00:44:19caliper is
00:44:19a bridge.
00:44:20This isn't
00:44:20bolted together.
00:44:21You don't
00:44:21get caliper
00:44:22halves where
00:44:23you can just
00:44:23go take
00:44:24your hand
00:44:24drill and
00:44:24put in
00:44:25piston
00:44:27bores.
00:44:29It's
00:44:29like this.
00:44:31It's just
00:44:31a little
00:44:31U,
00:44:32and they
00:44:32have a
00:44:32machine
00:44:33that goes
00:44:33in and
00:44:34machines it
00:44:35and pulls
00:44:35itself out.
00:44:36It's just...
00:44:37And when
00:44:38this was
00:44:39told to
00:44:40the Japanese,
00:44:40they said,
00:44:41of course,
00:44:41this is not
00:44:42possible.
00:44:44And of
00:44:44course,
00:44:44then they
00:44:45had to
00:44:45show them
00:44:46how they
00:44:47were doing
00:44:48it.
00:44:48And
00:44:50such a
00:44:51step forward.
00:44:53The calipers
00:44:54that TZ750
00:44:56came with
00:44:57were cast
00:44:59iron, and
00:45:00they weighed
00:45:00four pounds
00:45:01a piece.
00:45:03The calipers
00:45:04that are on
00:45:05MotoGP bikes
00:45:06weigh under
00:45:08450 grams,
00:45:09I think,
00:45:10under a
00:45:10pound.
00:45:11Under a
00:45:12pound!
00:45:13Good stuff.
00:45:15I think,
00:45:16you know,
00:45:16it's a
00:45:16moment to
00:45:17say,
00:45:18when we
00:45:19look at
00:45:19all of the
00:45:20photographs of
00:45:20this motorcycle,
00:45:22and the
00:45:22components,
00:45:23you look at
00:45:24the carbon
00:45:24fork upper,
00:45:26and you
00:45:27look at
00:45:27the frame,
00:45:30you look at
00:45:30the crankshaft.
00:45:32When you
00:45:33look at the
00:45:33crankshaft,
00:45:34the sheen
00:45:35of the
00:45:35material
00:45:37speaks to
00:45:37its content.
00:45:39It's just
00:45:39wonderful.
00:45:40Just the way
00:45:41that the
00:45:41carbon fiber
00:45:42is,
00:45:42when you
00:45:42look at
00:45:42the fibers
00:45:43and you
00:45:43know that
00:45:45those fibers
00:45:47were laid
00:45:48with intent
00:45:49to take
00:45:49precisely the
00:45:51load in
00:45:52the directions
00:45:52they need
00:45:53to take
00:45:53the load
00:45:54and to
00:45:55have give
00:45:56where they
00:45:56need to
00:45:57have give
00:45:57and that
00:45:58someone has
00:45:58thought about
00:45:59this and
00:46:00it's all there
00:46:01on the surface.
00:46:02It's all there
00:46:03on the surface.
00:46:04The fork lower,
00:46:05the machined
00:46:06fork lower
00:46:06is just
00:46:08exquisite
00:46:08where it
00:46:09carries the
00:46:10caliper.
00:46:11And of
00:46:12course what's
00:46:12happening is
00:46:13that the
00:46:14effort
00:46:14on the
00:46:15part of
00:46:16the two
00:46:16calipers
00:46:17to follow
00:46:18the disc
00:46:18as braking
00:46:19goes on
00:46:20is transmitted
00:46:21to the rest
00:46:22of the
00:46:22motorcycle
00:46:23by that
00:46:23thread
00:46:24at the
00:46:24bottom
00:46:24of each
00:46:25fork tube
00:46:25and that
00:46:26will lift
00:46:26the back
00:46:27of the
00:46:27motorcycle
00:46:28off the
00:46:28ground.
00:46:29And how
00:46:30far that
00:46:31is from
00:46:31the triple
00:46:31clamp,
00:46:32the amount
00:46:32of leverage.
00:46:34That lever
00:46:35from where
00:46:35it's taking
00:46:36the force
00:46:36at the
00:46:37brake input
00:46:38up to
00:46:39the triple
00:46:39clamp
00:46:39is just
00:46:40fantastically
00:46:41long.
00:46:42And that's
00:46:42where your
00:46:42carbon
00:46:43upper comes
00:46:43into play
00:46:44because it's
00:46:4530% lighter
00:46:46but stiff
00:46:47as hell.
00:46:48This was
00:46:49one of the
00:46:49most persuasive
00:46:50arguments in
00:46:51favor of
00:46:52alternative
00:46:53front ends
00:46:53and alternative
00:46:55front suspensions
00:46:56was why
00:46:57should we
00:46:57send the
00:46:58force up
00:46:59to the
00:47:00steering head
00:47:01and then
00:47:01back down
00:47:02into the
00:47:03rest of
00:47:03the chassis?
00:47:04Why not
00:47:05have a
00:47:05swing arm
00:47:06pointing forward
00:47:07with a
00:47:08pivot inside
00:47:08the wheel
00:47:09hub
00:47:09so that
00:47:11the line
00:47:13of
00:47:13transmission
00:47:14of force
00:47:14was direct
00:47:17but it
00:47:19didn't work
00:47:19as well
00:47:20as the
00:47:21best
00:47:23telescopic
00:47:23forks
00:47:24and it
00:47:24still
00:47:25doesn't.
00:47:27And Honda
00:47:27put several
00:47:28years into
00:47:29trying to
00:47:29make it
00:47:30work in
00:47:30the 1980s
00:47:31and every
00:47:34year the
00:47:36bike was
00:47:36sort of
00:47:38oh you
00:47:40know
00:47:40fifth
00:47:40fourth
00:47:41so it
00:47:42was promising
00:47:43but when
00:47:45the rider
00:47:47gave
00:47:48direction
00:47:48for what
00:47:50he wanted
00:47:50changed for
00:47:51next year
00:47:52it was
00:47:52always back
00:47:54towards the
00:47:55qualities of
00:47:55a telescopic
00:47:58and the
00:47:58purists were
00:47:59just tearing
00:48:00their hair
00:48:01out because
00:48:01they wanted
00:48:02this revolution
00:48:03they dreamed
00:48:04it they'd
00:48:05made prototypes
00:48:07and here we
00:48:08are with
00:48:08telescopics
00:48:09they still
00:48:09work better.
00:48:12yeah the
00:48:13advantages
00:48:14didn't
00:48:14outweigh
00:48:15what you
00:48:16were losing
00:48:17I got a
00:48:18photo
00:48:19I got a
00:48:19couple of
00:48:20photos this
00:48:21morning from
00:48:21somebody at
00:48:22COTA for
00:48:24the MotoGP
00:48:25this weekend
00:48:27and they
00:48:28show a
00:48:29rack of
00:48:30fuel tanks
00:48:30and there
00:48:31are little
00:48:32squashy ones
00:48:33there's hardly
00:48:34anything to
00:48:35them there
00:48:35for qualifying
00:48:36quality tanks
00:48:38and then
00:48:39there are
00:48:39the
00:48:39big lumps
00:48:41of fuel
00:48:43that have
00:48:44a beak
00:48:45that goes
00:48:45up where
00:48:46the filler
00:48:47cap is
00:48:48in the
00:48:49air box
00:48:49in the
00:48:50normal
00:48:50place
00:48:53so that
00:48:54if the
00:48:55router tucks
00:48:55in it's
00:48:56here somewhere
00:48:56in your
00:48:57middle of
00:48:59your chest
00:49:00so and
00:49:01they're all
00:49:02beautiful
00:49:03looking
00:49:03aluminum
00:49:04weldments
00:49:05just
00:49:06lovely
00:49:07a little
00:49:08detail on
00:49:09oh sorry
00:49:10yep
00:49:10go ahead
00:49:11no a little
00:49:12detail on
00:49:13the brake
00:49:13the brake
00:49:14calipers and
00:49:14fork lowers
00:49:15the ones on
00:49:16the baggers
00:49:17have these
00:49:17beautiful little
00:49:19tongues sticking
00:49:20out that
00:49:20take that
00:49:22guide the
00:49:22axle in the
00:49:23right direction
00:49:23to to their
00:49:25place in the
00:49:26place where the
00:49:26axle goes
00:49:27through the
00:49:27fork lower
00:49:29and as a
00:49:30home mechanic
00:49:31and not as
00:49:32an ongoing
00:49:32race mechanic
00:49:34tuner type
00:49:34person I
00:49:36don't get to
00:49:36see this very
00:49:37often but they
00:49:37were changing
00:49:38front wheels
00:49:38on the
00:49:39baggers and
00:49:40those calipers
00:49:40have these
00:49:41beautiful black
00:49:42plastic pad
00:49:42spreaders that
00:49:44are put in
00:49:44from the top
00:49:45side
00:49:45yep
00:49:46and so when
00:49:47you roll
00:49:47that wheel
00:49:48in it's
00:49:49it's caught
00:49:50it's captured
00:49:50at the axle
00:49:51and it's
00:49:51guided to its
00:49:52place where
00:49:52the axle goes
00:49:53through
00:49:53and the
00:49:57discs go
00:49:57into the
00:49:58calipers and
00:49:58knock out
00:49:59those spreaders
00:50:00yes so you
00:50:01just without
00:50:02much trouble at
00:50:03all you just
00:50:04roll that
00:50:04aluminum
00:50:05marcasini wheel
00:50:06in with its
00:50:06iron super
00:50:07bike discs
00:50:08and it knocks
00:50:09out those
00:50:09things and
00:50:10then you slide
00:50:10and the axle
00:50:11just goes
00:50:12there's no
00:50:13big rubber
00:50:15mallet
00:50:15dead blow
00:50:16people trying
00:50:17to pound an
00:50:18axle through
00:50:18it's it's
00:50:20all beautiful
00:50:21fit and well
00:50:22thought out
00:50:22it was
00:50:22legacy of
00:50:23the AK
00:50:2447
00:50:25yeah
00:50:29because
00:50:30I'm sure
00:50:30that was
00:50:31that's on
00:50:31the I'm
00:50:32sure that's
00:50:32on the
00:50:32Olin's

00:50:43an RG
00:50:44500
00:50:45factory
00:50:46transmission
00:50:47at Daytona
00:50:49one year
00:50:49maybe it
00:50:49was 80
00:50:50and it
00:50:51was so
00:50:52loose
00:50:53the gears
00:50:54were sort
00:50:55of clattering
00:50:56on the
00:50:56on the
00:50:57shafts
00:50:57because
00:50:58they had
00:50:59made this
00:50:59wonderful
00:51:00precise gearbox
00:51:01and it had
00:51:02been their
00:51:03worst problem
00:51:03in the first
00:51:05two years
00:51:06racing that
00:51:07bike
00:51:09and they
00:51:10fixed it
00:51:14we humans
00:51:15have a problem
00:51:15though
00:51:16a person
00:51:17of authority
00:51:18says
00:51:19let it be
00:51:20made this
00:51:21way
00:51:21and it
00:51:22doesn't
00:51:22work
00:51:23are we
00:51:24going to
00:51:24tell that
00:51:25person
00:51:25it didn't
00:51:27work
00:51:27your idea
00:51:28didn't
00:51:29work
00:51:29or are we
00:51:30going to
00:51:31kind of
00:51:32just go
00:51:33about our
00:51:34business
00:51:35because
00:51:37in engineering
00:51:38social problems
00:51:39are the
00:51:40worst
00:51:43I've heard
00:51:44that
00:51:44yeah
00:51:45well
00:51:45I repeat
00:51:46myself
00:51:46often
00:51:47because
00:51:47I have
00:51:47a limited
00:51:48repertoire
00:51:53I worry
00:51:54I like
00:51:54it
00:51:56yeah so
00:51:56there's
00:51:57500
00:51:57super
00:51:58leggera
00:51:59v4
00:51:59centenario
00:51:59bikes
00:52:00in the
00:52:00special
00:52:01red
00:52:01color
00:52:01and then
00:52:02there
00:52:02are
00:52:02100
00:52:04tricolore
00:52:05bikes
00:52:06so you
00:52:06might have
00:52:07a chance
00:52:07at 600
00:52:08the
00:52:09tricolore
00:52:11sorry if I
00:52:11butchered that
00:52:12folks but
00:52:13further mark
00:52:14this historic
00:52:14milestone
00:52:16so that's
00:52:17pretty
00:52:19what do you
00:52:19think we're
00:52:20going to see
00:52:20on this
00:52:20I mean
00:52:21they're
00:52:21usually
00:52:23six digits
00:52:26six figures
00:52:29well this is
00:52:30the thing
00:52:31you have to
00:52:32be able to
00:52:33to tap
00:52:34this market
00:52:36because
00:52:37if you
00:52:40base your
00:52:41sales on
00:52:42the power
00:52:43of the
00:52:44US middle
00:52:44class and
00:52:45its mass
00:52:46market
00:52:46which at
00:52:48one time
00:52:48was the
00:52:49most powerful
00:52:50force on
00:52:50earth
00:52:52uh
00:52:54you could
00:52:55be
00:52:56walking
00:52:57on
00:52:57shifting
00:52:57sands
00:52:58so
00:52:59the
00:53:00people
00:53:00who
00:53:01have
00:53:01like
00:53:02uh
00:53:03mose
00:53:04allison
00:53:04said
00:53:04in the
00:53:06song
00:53:06but
00:53:07nowadays
00:53:08the
00:53:09old
00:53:09man
00:53:10got all
00:53:12the money
00:53:12and
00:53:14so
00:53:14if they
00:53:15can sell
00:53:15500 of
00:53:16these
00:53:16things
00:53:17to be
00:53:17stored
00:53:18away
00:53:18in
00:53:20uh
00:53:20temperature
00:53:21and
00:53:22humidity
00:53:23controlled
00:53:23rooms
00:53:24all the
00:53:25better
00:53:26for the
00:53:26rest of
00:53:26us
00:53:26because
00:53:27it
00:53:27keeps
00:53:27ducati
00:53:29healthy
00:53:30and that's
00:53:32what we
00:53:32want
00:53:32i asked
00:53:33claudio
00:53:34uh
00:53:35domenicali
00:53:36uh
00:53:36once
00:53:37why are
00:53:38you
00:53:38introducing
00:53:39this
00:53:39v4
00:53:40at a
00:53:41time
00:53:41when
00:53:42sales
00:53:43of
00:53:43big
00:53:44sport
00:53:45bikes
00:53:45are not
00:53:46doing
00:53:46so
00:53:46well
00:53:47and he
00:53:49said
00:53:49because
00:53:50our
00:53:51clientele
00:53:52expect
00:53:52us
00:53:53to
00:53:53lead
00:53:55and
00:53:56that's
00:53:56why
00:53:57i have
00:53:57to
00:53:57advise
00:53:58those
00:53:58people
00:53:59who
00:53:59are
00:53:59disappointed
00:54:00that
00:54:01this

01:02:25in particular
01:02:26they're
01:02:26doing the
01:02:27job
01:02:27you're feeling
01:02:28that at
01:02:29high speed
01:02:29when
01:02:30before
01:02:31maybe you
01:02:32weren't
01:02:32so it's
01:02:34wonderful to
01:02:34get that
01:02:35far
01:02:35that we
01:02:35have this
01:02:36stuff
01:02:37it's not
01:02:37just
01:02:37hey it
01:02:38looks like
01:02:38MotoGP
01:02:39it actually
01:02:39acts like
01:02:40MotoGP
01:02:41the earliest
01:02:42just
01:02:42externally

01:02:44you turn
01:02:45the
01:02:46clickers
01:02:47they weren't
01:02:48connected to
01:02:49anything
01:02:49they were
01:02:50just
01:02:50something
01:02:51to play
01:02:51with
01:02:53on certain
01:02:54bikes
01:02:54yeah we

01:02:58adjustable
01:02:58rebound
01:02:59shocks
01:02:59on the
01:03:00sport bikes
01:03:00of you
01:03:01know
01:03:0280s
01:03:0290s
01:03:03era
01:03:03and it
01:03:03was a
01:03:04four position
01:03:04rebound
01:03:05adjuster
01:03:05and
01:03:07I'm not
01:03:07sure there
01:03:08was any
01:03:08difference
01:03:08between
01:03:09one and
01:03:09four
01:03:10so
01:03:11yeah
01:03:11we've
01:03:12come a
01:03:12long way
01:03:13this stuff
01:03:13is real
01:03:14that's
01:03:14what's
01:03:14wonderful
01:03:15about it
01:03:17yes it
01:03:18is
01:03:19because
01:03:20think about
01:03:21Alcock and
01:03:22Brown trying
01:03:22to fly
01:03:23across the
01:03:23Atlantic
01:03:24and think
01:03:25about yourself
01:03:26bellying up
01:03:26to the
01:03:27counter
01:03:27and saying
01:03:28any seats
01:03:28on 276
01:03:31you know
01:03:33the product
01:03:33you're going
01:03:34to get
01:03:34and it
01:03:34is an
01:03:35open
01:03:35cockpit
01:03:37and it's
01:03:38likely to
01:03:38reach the
01:03:38destination
01:03:42so this
01:03:43new
01:03:43motorcycle
01:03:44is
01:03:44a
01:03:46collection
01:03:47of works
01:03:47of art
01:03:49and the
01:03:50reason that
01:03:50we gave
01:03:51at the
01:03:51start of
01:03:52this
01:03:53diatribe
01:03:54there are
01:03:54two of
01:03:54us
01:03:56is that
01:03:58the
01:03:59harder
01:03:59you work
01:04:00to
01:04:01make the
01:04:02shape of
01:04:03parts
01:04:03the same
01:04:04as that
01:04:05of the
01:04:05stresses
01:04:05that flow
01:04:06through
01:04:06them
01:04:08the more
01:04:09they
01:04:09please
01:04:09us
01:04:10visually
01:04:12I
01:04:13used to
01:04:13when the
01:04:14new
01:04:14race bikes
01:04:15would come
01:04:16to Boston
01:04:16Cycles
01:04:17and pry
01:04:17the lid
01:04:17off the
01:04:18crate
01:04:19push the
01:04:20sides
01:04:20down
01:04:21I would
01:04:22take cylinders
01:04:23off and
01:04:23go home
01:04:24and I
01:04:25make a pot
01:04:26of coffee
01:04:26and walk
01:04:27up and
01:04:27down
01:04:28looking
01:04:29at the
01:04:30cylinders
01:04:31looking at
01:04:31the porting
01:04:33because I
01:04:33wanted
01:04:36to load
01:04:37all that
01:04:37data so
01:04:38that I'd
01:04:39have something
01:04:39to think
01:04:40about
01:04:40it was
01:04:41wonderful
01:04:43it was a
01:04:44real treat
01:04:44yeah
01:04:47well we
01:04:48can't wait
01:04:48to see
01:04:49and ride
01:04:49this thing
01:04:50somewhere
01:04:52you get
01:04:53a lot
01:04:53of stuff
01:04:54with the
