00:00Things are getting spicy in the west end of town
00:03as three house-proud neighbors swap niceties for smack talk
00:07in a fight to prove who's home is the real queen of the block.
00:11The judges are primed to pick apart every detail,
00:14while the contestants watch and happily throw shade right back.
00:18I am disappointed.
00:20I wanted peace and quiet.
00:22You're not getting it.
00:23Black and orange in your dining room table?
00:25Like, is it Halloween all year round?
00:27I hate it.
00:28Ouch.
00:29Irina is hoping her eclectic home serves up style and serenity.
00:33I think my house is the winner because it's unique.
00:35It has a lot of character and it shows my personality.
00:39Julie is confident her glitz and glamour will outshine the competition.
00:43When you're outside, you think it's a traditional house,
00:46but once you open that door, it's very modern and very contemporary,
00:50so there's a wow factor.
00:51And Grace is trusting that less really is more,
00:54especially on the scorecard.
00:56I'm very minimal.
00:57My home is light and bright and comfy.
01:00I'm very competitive.
01:02I like to win.
01:04When the judging's done, one neighbour bags the bragging rights and claims the crown
01:08as top of the block.
01:10Welcome to the posh West End, where the homes get blow-ups that put salon makeovers to shame.
01:16Ready to rearrange the pecking order are our judges.
01:19Here to snoot, score, and topple whoever thinks they've got it in the bag.
01:24Real estate agent, Jaden.
01:26What's really important to focus on is the functionality of the property.
01:29Nosy neighbour, Marco.
01:31I like to see how other people live and how they live differently from me and how that's wrong.
01:35And if I have a problem with what you've done in your house, you're going to hear about it.
01:39And renovation aficionado, Andrea.
01:42What I look for in a house is the quality of construction.
01:44I love a good renovation and I love moody colours.
01:48Super glam all the way.
01:50I didn't expect it to look like this from the outside.
01:52The rules of this competition are simple.
01:55As our judges tour the houses, they'll consider their design, functionality,
01:59and value added to the home.
02:01And one house will reign supreme.
02:03Oh, no.
02:04Julia, you lost me, girl.
02:06No.
02:07Marco, you're starting to get on my last nerve.
02:09Let the battle for block royalty begin.
02:15I think this house is a winner.
02:17It has personality.
02:18It has character.
02:19I don't know if you would call it eclectic.
02:21Would you call it mid-century modern?
02:23My kids' friends will walk in and say, oh,
02:25this doesn't look like my parents' house at all.
02:28I'll say, good.
02:29This home's secret weapon is my backyard.
02:32When I asked my real estate agent to find me a house,
02:34the priority was that she had to find me a backyard where I could suntan naked.
02:38Not that I suntan naked, but that was a priority.
02:40Thanks for clarifying.
02:41I just like to hang out with my friends and just chill.
02:46Are you ready?
02:47Are you ready, baby?
02:48Come on.
02:49The judges are coming.
02:50I want to win because it's fun.
02:53It's a competition, and it'd be great to have my design choices validated.
02:58As the judges show up to unleash their unfiltered truths, Irina settles in ringside.
03:04I'm ready.
03:05Armed with a few truth bombs of her own.
03:07This house just looks so well-maintained.
03:11I like this so far.
03:13Oh.
03:14Okay.
03:15Wow.
03:15Okay.
03:16Wow.
03:17I don't like the fact that the stairs are literally right here.
03:21As soon as you walk in.
03:22Yeah, I feel like we're sort of standing on top of each other right now.
03:25Okay, well, it's not like I had an option.
03:27I like moody colors usually in my living space, but in an entryway, it just feels drabby.
03:34I feel like I'm in a cave a little bit here.
03:36Cave does feel a bit dramatic.
03:37Oh, wow.
03:39We got some color.
03:40Wow.
03:40This is giving luxury from top to bottom.
03:44I love how sleek everything is.
03:47Top of the line appliances.
03:49Quartz countertops.
03:50Value on top of value on top of value.
03:52I think Irina's done a fabulous job at making this space look super custom.
03:57How do we feel about the glossy cabinets?
03:59See, I love the glass as long as it's not old school 90s white gloss.
04:04And it's not.
04:05This is the definition of sexy.
04:07Okay, I didn't know I had a sexy kitchen, but I'll take that.
04:10Then we've got this interesting dining area.
04:12It's a little bit dark.
04:13I feel like I'm in a cave.
04:15There's that cave again.
04:16Marco, buddy, should we be worried about this cave obsession?
04:20For me, this is such a happy space.
04:22Really?
04:23Look at the color pops.
04:24I love it so much.
04:26Super glam all the way.
04:27Black and orange in your dining room table.
04:30Like, is it Halloween all year round here?
04:31Black and orange is beautiful.
04:33No.
04:34These chairs look like they're from a prison cafeteria.
04:37How would you know, Marco?
04:39Okay, but are we judging the chairs or are we judging the house?
04:41I'm here to judge the design and I think this is ugly.
04:46And what qualifications do you have, Marco?
04:49I think almost everybody would love this.
04:52There is something back there that I want to take a peek at.
04:55Is it the panel?
04:57What the?
04:58No.
04:59Oh my goodness.
05:00What is it?
05:00Heated floors.
05:02Oh, they're the best.
05:03I get ridiculously excited about those kinds of additions.
05:06Yeah.
05:06For heated floors?
05:07Oh, yes.
05:08I'll put on some slippers.
05:10Come on.
05:11Oh my God, Marco.
05:13Really?
05:14You probably do live in a cave.
05:17This is my wow.
05:19Really?
05:20This is what has been missing since the 70s.
05:23Whenever you have a spot in a house that's sunken, you know there's a party happening here.
05:28True.
05:30I want to be friends with Irina.
05:32Really?
05:32Why are you saying really?
05:34Like what is really about this?
05:36I don't know.
05:37I just think some people's idea of boho chic is just a half dead plant and a couple of rugs
05:42on the floor.
05:43Who is this Marco character?
05:45Everybody loves that living room.
05:46This is where I would be 90% of the time if I lived in this house.
05:50Absolutely.
05:51Me too.
05:52Okay.
05:53Come on, Marco.
05:56Radio silence from the couch.
06:00Yeah.
06:02At this point, I think I need to go to your house to see what your house looks like because
06:07your standards are really high.
06:09I don't think my standards are that high. I just, I just don't like this. I think it should have
06:14been left in the 70s.
06:15Oh, no. Sunken living rooms need to make a comeback.
06:20Can't wait till it goes outside. You probably have all kinds of comments to say about that.
06:24Just get me out of that living room.
06:26Oh my gosh.
06:28Oh, look at this ravine.
06:34It's so zen.
06:35It's almost spa-like.
06:37It could be a Scandinavian spa back here.
06:39This is the money maker.
06:40When we're talking about value, being on a ravine, that is highly sought after.
06:45You know, this is a, it's a vibe.
06:47Oh, it's a vibe. Does that mean you like it?
06:49It's a lot of outdoor work though.
06:51You need to have a green thumb or a good budget for a gardener.
06:54Most people see a big, beautiful backyard and all Marco sees is a lot of work.
06:59Looks like we have a primary bedroom on the main floor.
07:03First impressions, I am disappointed.
07:07Yes.
07:08Yeah, what is this?
07:09She does have a walk out to the backyard, okay?
07:11So she does have that, which is a plus.
07:13But this is probably the most disappointing part of the room to me.
07:17It's like the finishes of the entire house are very quality.
07:20And then we just have this curtain here.
07:24That is quality, 100% cotton linen.
07:29And I hate opening, closing closet doors.
07:31Again, very thought through and exactly what I wanted.
07:34All right.
07:36I mean, kind of small for an en suite, but beautiful skyline in a bathroom.
07:41Who doesn't like that?
07:42Yeah.
07:42Big shower.
07:43I think big shower might be a compliment.
07:46It's nice.
07:47Oh, Marco likes it.
07:48Wow.
07:49From a design perspective, it is so bland.
07:53I wanted peace and quiet.
07:55You're not getting it.
07:57I think overall, beautiful house.
07:59It's so unique.
08:00Unique.
08:02Except for Sarah Puss Marco, I'm good.
08:05The judges may have marched off to the next house, but the commentary circus is in full swing.
08:11Stepping into the ring is opponent Julia, here to size up her competition.
08:15Oh, wow.
08:16I think I like my bedroom and my en suite a bit more than this one.
08:21I know my primary's small, but that's okay.
08:25Did you come with the house, little buddy?
08:26Or are you extra?
08:29Irina, this is your secret weapon, your backyard.
08:31It might have knocked me out of competition.
08:34Too bad, so sad.
08:36I think I got this.
08:38All the fanfare, Irina.
08:40The judges still have two more houses to check out.
08:42And this competition ain't over till every last critique is in.
08:46I live in this house with my twins, Chiara and Giancarlo.
08:49The exterior is a little bit more traditional.
08:51And the interior is very contemporary with a little pizzazz.
08:54My favourite area in the house is the main floor, the family room kitchen,
08:58because we get to spend family quality time together.
09:01I am really proud that being a single mom of twins, I was able to buy this house,
09:08renovate it, and really make it our own.
09:11I want to win this competition, because I want to show other single moms that they can do it.
09:21This house is so charming.
09:23I feel like there's a lot of houses in the neighbourhood that have been torn down
09:26and just completely modernized.
09:28This house seems like she kept the original charm.
09:30I think, uh, our friend Julia has some great tastes.
09:33I do have good taste.
09:35Oh!
09:35Oh, wow!
09:38All right!
09:39All right!
09:39I didn't expect it to look like this from the outside.
09:42No, it's much more modern than I thought it was going to be.
09:45People are always surprised when they walk in my front door for the first time.
09:49The backsplash, I feel like, is a little interesting.
09:52Finally, a kitchen that throws its own party.
09:55That's one of my favourite parts of the house.
09:57What I can really commend her for is making the space her own.
10:01Julia has no issues with putting her personal touch on anything.
10:05I appreciate that.
10:06Thank you, Jayden.
10:07For me, there are a few too many styles in this space.
10:11We've got extremely modern kitchen there.
10:16And then we've got this glass barn door slider with a crown moulding above.
10:22Interesting.
10:23I'll take it.
10:24I just didn't want to rip out the crown moulding, so I left it.
10:27I'm just sort of confused when it comes to the layout.
10:31This fireplace is typically a focal point, but the island just gets in the way.
10:36And even is this mounted, right?
10:38Because even if it moves out and we can leverage it in the living space,
10:41I'm now smacking you in the head if you're sitting on the chair at the island.
10:45Yes, that's true.
10:46Where would you put it, Jayden?
10:48Put an extension on the house?
10:49You tell me.
10:51Oh, no.
10:52Julia, you lost me, girl.
10:54No.
10:55There's nothing I hate more than, like, live, laugh, love hitting me in the face in six
10:59different fonts.
11:00Then please, Marco, don't turn around.
11:02Okay?
11:03I don't want a reading test when I come into your house.
11:05Are you worried you're going to fail?
11:09Oh, this is so cute.
11:11I'm laughing at the penny rounds.
11:13It's a little too much for me.
11:14I'm not a fan of this at all.
11:17I totally disagree.
11:18This color of paint works so beautifully with the tile.
11:22I think this is a well put together, well thought out plan that includes sort of one style.
11:29I do love my powder room.
11:30I chose those fixtures diligently.
11:33I do love these stairs.
11:34They are stylish.
11:36Primary bedroom.
11:37I think she's made a lot of nice choices in this room.
11:39The side lamps are beautiful.
11:41It's very cohesive in here.
11:43Nothing says I got bored halfway through like an accent wall.
11:46Are you kidding me?
11:47This is such a great example of something that can be done easily.
11:52And it adds a huge impact to the room.
11:55It's art in action.
11:57Marco, you're starting to get on my last nerve.
12:00It doesn't elevate the space to you.
12:02You would prefer to have another wall like this as opposed to that accent wall?
12:05He just chose a really great color for this room and just, you know, attacked it from a different angle
12:11of design.
12:11I love that they're fighting over my accent wall.
12:13I'm proud of it.
12:15Just come on here because we've got more of Julia's jewels.
12:18That's, that's, that's tacky.
12:20Marco, are you going to say anything nice about my house?
12:23Oh, okay.
12:29The sparkle continues.
12:32I love the glitter.
12:33I love the glam.
12:34It's so rich.
12:36It's big fake jewels.
12:38What do you mean?
12:38Oh, I love it.
12:39That light fixture spoke to me.
12:40In bathrooms nowadays, people are making the wrong decision when it comes to tiles,
12:44but her tile actually brings the space together and is a little wonky, but also classy, which just screams Julia.
12:52I love it.
12:53Thank you, Andrea.
12:54I appreciate that.
12:55I really loved some of the aspects of this house.
12:58This one has to be a contender.
13:00I do love my house and yes, there are things I could change, but for now, I'm still in it
13:06to win it.
13:07Hold that thought.
13:08Opponent Grace is here with her own explosive takes.
13:11Oh, wow.
13:13Very contemporary.
13:14That backsplash is wild.
13:18I guess you could check your hair in that.
13:21But most people like that backsplash when they come in.
13:24That's a cozy little bedroom.
13:27Quite the feature wall.
13:28Cute bathroom.
13:29I like the double sink.
13:30More glitter.
13:32I think Julia and I both like a lot of elegance.
13:36I just feel like mine is maybe a little more streamlined and cohesive.
13:46Feeling pretty good about the competition now.
13:49Grace, you're a little annoying, but we'll see who wins in the end.
13:57I loved this house the minute I saw it.
14:01I'm very minimal and I wanted my home to be light and bright and neutral so that it would stand
14:09the test of time.
14:10One of the secret weapons to this house would be the redesigned kitchen.
14:15I chose to have the stone run up the sides of the wall.
14:19It's a natural marble.
14:21I do know someone else in the competition.
14:23She's a really good friend of mine.
14:26I've helped her organize her plays for many, many times.
14:30In fact, she messaged me to help her out for the competition and I had to say no because, you
14:40know, I want to win.
14:41Well played, Grace.
14:42Today, with bragging rights on the line, it's every woman for herself.
14:46I play a lot of beach volleyball so I'm very competitive.
14:54Okay, let's do this.
14:56It's not your typical townhouse that you see because usually I don't like them and this is nice.
15:00It's different.
15:01There's a variety of shapes that I think really adds to the character of the home.
15:04That's one of the reasons why I bought that townhouse.
15:07Oh, okay.
15:08I like the dark wood.
15:09Yeah, with the iron spindles too.
15:11Looks like nine-foot ceilings.
15:14Should we check out the kitchen, the heart of the home?
15:15Let's go.
15:16I love a good kitchen.
15:17The layout is great.
15:19I actually really like the amount of storage in here.
15:22I feel like it's a great use of space.
15:25Okay, thank you.
15:26How do we feel about not having fixtures on the cupboards?
15:31Uh, no, I hate it right off the bat.
15:32I don't, like, how am I open?
15:34Marco hating something.
15:36That's new.
15:37I do like the pulls on the lower ones though.
15:40Look at these.
15:41They're pretty.
15:42Yeah, and they're soft clothes too, just nice.
15:45All right, a win for the lower cabinets.
15:49Very open flow concept here.
15:51I like that the dining room is kind of in the middle of the floor, separating the two rooms.
15:56But the problem is the wall color is so bland.
15:59Millennial gray.
16:01Yeah, it sort of screams early 2000s.
16:04Ooh, ouch.
16:06It needs art.
16:07I need some kind of color in here.
16:09Yeah, I might even do a little bit of a built-in situation on that wall.
16:13No, there's no space for built-ins on that wall.
16:16Oh, so here's my built-ins.
16:17There's your built-ins.
16:18Lovely, yes.
16:19All you had to do was look a little to your left.
16:22We love a built-in fireplace too.
16:24I think this is gorgeous.
16:26And it's gas.
16:27Yes.
16:27Love the gas.
16:28I think it's sandstone.
16:30It's limestone, not sandstone.
16:32This mantle is beautiful and would have been a very big upgrade.
16:37Yeah.
16:37For me, this is the wow factor of this space.
16:39Wow.
16:40It is a feature in that room.
16:42All right.
16:43Primary suite.
16:45This is a long walk up here.
16:47I do love the separation though.
16:48It's a real suite.
16:50It's on its own floor.
16:52What's with the gray, Grace?
16:53Everything.
16:53We've got gray curtains, gray bedding, gray headboard.
16:56But a little bit of magic is the fact that you do have a balcony.
16:59And I feel like a lot of townhouses now, it's just like the fake Juliet balcony.
17:03You can't actually go out onto it.
17:05Whereas with her balcony, it's actually functional.
17:08Love that balcony.
17:09Okay.
17:11The large format tiles are beautiful.
17:13Gorgeous.
17:14I know.
17:15Gorgeous.
17:15Great choice, Grace.
17:16And the soaker tub?
17:18The soaker tub?
17:19Amazing.
17:19You want to...
17:20I want to get in.
17:20You want to get in?
17:21Yeah.
17:21Go do your thing.
17:22I mean, is it complex?
17:24What?
17:24Oh, oh, oh.
17:25Oh, yeah.
17:26There you go.
17:27It's like it was made for you.
17:29I feel a little better.
17:31I wish they had loved the kitchen as much as they loved the bathroom.
17:35But big win for the bathroom.
17:38And right on cue, friend-slash-opponent Irina strolls in.
17:42She's been here before, but never with her critique mode dialed up.
17:47Okay, Grace, we're on.
17:48Be nice.
17:50Well, hopefully we're still friends after this.
17:52So how's the stools I gave her?
17:53Oh, she did give me those stools.
17:57What else has she done?
17:58Beautiful living room.
18:00Everything perfect.
18:03I don't know.
18:04Should I be nervous?
18:05Depends on the judges.
18:07If they like what everybody else likes, like the houses you see everywhere, then I guess Grace will
18:12win because hers is so put together.
18:14But if they like originality, something different, a little bit of chaos, then I'll win.
18:20My home is way more interesting.
18:22It is true.
18:23Her home is more interesting.
18:26I just think mine is more functional.
18:29As nice as this house is, mine has character, it's got personality, and I should win.
18:35I should win.
18:39Judges, design, function, and added value are your metrics.
18:43Time to pick which house is top of this block.
18:46With Irina, the big spaces were on point.
18:50The kitchen had such a vibe.
18:51It's basically like art deco and mid-century modern got married and had an art gallery baby.
18:59And then we have the sunken living space, which is really amazing.
19:03And we walk out to the backyard oasis.
19:05But the house had too many design choices for me that I personally didn't like.
19:10That entryway just felt like a cave.
19:12The dining area was too dark.
19:14And then that bedroom.
19:15That was just sad, drab.
19:19Let's talk about Julia's house.
19:21One of my favorite parts about her house was actually the curb appeal.
19:24The property has that wow factor.
19:26You walk in the door and it's disco time in your face.
19:30In a good way or in a bad way?
19:32Well, I guess I didn't mind it.
19:35But what really struck me was how many different design types there were on that main floor.
19:42Julia, like pick a style and stick to it.
19:45But as soon as we moved to the powder room, to the primary and into the bathroom, the design and
19:51the functionality, everything worked for me.
19:54Yeah, the key word here is curated, right?
19:56And when we're talking about personality, I mean that house is Julia, which we cannot overlook.
20:01Right.
20:02If we're talking about Grace's house, or I like to call it the place where art went to die, it
20:06was kind of a blank slate.
20:07But main floor was the open concept flow.
20:10I felt from the living room to the dining room and right into the kitchen.
20:14Out of all the houses we saw, it flowed the best.
20:16I feel like functionality in terms of having my own primary retreat upstairs was great.
20:22And she had this spa-like retreat.
20:24No one else had a bathroom that compared to hers.
20:26Are we all on the same page?
20:28I don't know.
20:29Should we just say the name?
20:30Count us down.
20:31One, two, three.
20:39Whose house will be crowned?
20:41Top of the block.
20:42I've worked hard to make this home what it is.
20:45It's different than what you normally see.
20:47I think this house is a winner.
20:49I love my home.
20:50First and foremost, it's because I designed it.
20:52The design and decor should make us at the top.
20:56I feel really good about the competition.
20:58The judges loved the functionality of my house.
21:02The verdict is in.
21:04If the judges want a house that's full of character and personality, then I think I have this.
21:08I'm very competitive.
21:09I like to win.
21:10And I think I created a really beautiful space.
21:13I am very nervous and very anxious to see where we land with this.
21:25Irina?
21:27Yes?
21:41I feel awesome.
21:46I think it's amazing that I won.
21:48The judges seemed to like my taste.
21:49Well, maybe not so much Marco, but the women I felt definitely liked my house.
21:53All three women did an amazing job of elevating their properties in their own unique ways.
21:58But we do have to give it to Irina.
22:00She did not play it safe.
22:01She thought out the box.
22:02And she executed her vision to a tee.
22:04I'm disappointed we didn't win.
22:06You, Giancarlo, how do you feel?
22:08I'm cold.
22:13Um, I'm a little disappointed, but I'm really proud of the work that I did in my plays.
22:18I was worried that my home would just be a little bit too different.
22:21So it feels good to win because I feel like my design choices have been validated.
22:26I'm so happy to win.
22:28I'm so happy to win.
