00:01It's a showdown for street supremacy as three house proud neighbors swap
00:05compliments for competition and battle it out for best in show. Part critics and
00:11part chaos agents the judges are ready to pick apart every detail while the
00:16contestants watch and return the favor. From a design perspective this feels
00:19like an afterthought. Oh my goodness! This space it's not doing what it needs to do
00:26for me. What do you mean? It works for me. Oh gloves are off eh? Oh my goodness. Sharon and
00:33Jason think their new build is a checklist of slay. We built this house for us so it's
00:39very custom. Honestly we do think our house stands above most other people's.
00:45Paul and Luana have no doubt their place will slice through the competition. The
00:49entire back of the house is just windows. It's picture-perfect. I don't have any
00:54concerns whatsoever that we're not going to win. And Peter and Amanda believe their
00:59house has a flawless scorecard. Nobody has a house like this. Those pops of colors,
01:04the layout. I really think we have a good chance of winning. When the judging is done
01:09one neighbor bags the bragging rights and claims the crown as top of the block.
01:16Welcome to the west side where the homes are stately, the parks are picturesque and
01:21the neighbors are in a full-blown renovation arms race. Ready to ruffle
01:25some feathers our judges are here to snoop score and set the record straight.
01:30Real estate agents and tough critic Sasha. When I'm in your house I'll be judging
01:34the choices that you've made. Nosy neighbor Henry. I'm just a neighbor but don't
01:39discount me because I'm in this competition to pick a winner. And renovation
01:43aficionado Andrea. I basically sleep, eat and drink houses. I'm obsessed. Okay. Wow. The
01:50rules of this competition are simple. As our judges tour the houses they'll consider their design,
01:55functionality and value added to the home. And one house will reign supreme. I don't know
02:01how I feel about this room. It's a wet mess in here. That was a bit overdramatic. Let the battle
02:07for block royalty begin. Welcome to our modern farmhouse. Every room is some sort of white color
02:16on the walls. She tells me the rooms are different colors but. The classic Fifty Shades of White dilemma.
02:25Plancy. Okay. When it comes to the secret weapon of this house I mean I can't just pick one.
02:31So one of them is our backyard and then there's our closet and then there's the ensuite bathroom.
02:36So I feel like that should earn us some points. Turn it on. Make it bubbles. Make it bubbles.
02:42Winning on this competition is great for bragging rights I suppose. When it comes right down to it,
02:47yes we've built this place. Yes it's very nice but this is also my childhood home. Not this home
02:53in particular but it is the same land. As the judges stroll in to dissect every little detail,
03:01Sharon and Jason snag front row seats to the impending chaos. It's like we're going for a
03:06lie detector test. Ready to do some dissecting of their own. We're here. Whoa look at this.
03:12There we go. Is that Henry? Who's Henry? I know him. Did you date him? No I didn't date him.
03:19Okay. We know each other from work. The black finishes to die for. Yeah somebody really thought
03:25about the palette for this house. That was you. You thought about the palette. I did. Okay we're
03:30off to a good start. I like it. Wow okay let's check out the living room and the kitchen. Love
03:37it.
03:38Sharon and Jason did not spare an inch. Thank you Sasha. This is incredible. Absolutely stunning.
03:44I'm speechless and that doesn't happen very often. Wow. Custom wall unit. The craftsmanship
03:51is top tier. That is a timeless piece that adds value. We didn't do any lipstick reno stuff. No lipstick
03:57reno. We just confound on the quality. We really didn't. All about the millwork. A built-in fridge.
04:02They're in our fridge. They're very nosy. I just found a surprise. She found a surprise? What's the
04:09surprise? A butler's pantry. Oh we love that. Butler pantry baby. Look at this everything tucked
04:17away. You're getting all the storage. We did think about storage. A lot of storage. The one thing
04:22I'm concerned is like that there's a lot of white here. Henry you're supposed to be on our side. Red
04:27would look so good in here. Oh my goodness. No. I'm just noticing this mantle. Boy is it a gorgeous
04:35piece of art. The textures are stunning. When I'm looking at these knickknacks that's on there
04:39this looks like something if I was coming in and someone's trying to sell a house. Good point.
04:43It is very depersonalized. I think it's almost too perfect. It does give you kind of like a staged feel.
04:48Where's the you know the home feel? I don't know. There's some meaningful items on those shelves.
04:54Yeah. Did you guys see what's outside there? There's a tv. Oh my goodness. I love it. And a dining
04:59table.
05:00You're really getting the value added on in the backyard space right? I love that. Oh okay. That's what I
05:07wanted to see. This is what we're looking for. Oh my gosh guys. I know that. What?
05:14What? I've worked with Sharon before. Henry finally realizes this is our house.
05:19All right. Primary bedroom. Are we wowing this? I'm not wowing this.
05:26It's not doing what it needs to do for me. Okay.
05:35I feel like there's not a wow factor in this bedroom. There's nothing to me in here that feels
05:43spa-like. How about the fireplace? I agree. The space, it's not doing what it needs to do for me.
05:50Sasha
05:51don't like it either. So I'm not completely happy with it. I think there's a lot of dead space in
05:55this
05:55room. Dead space. Okay. We were doing well until that moment. Let's check out the walk-in closet.
06:00Ooh. Okay. Oh my goodness. It's a whole new room. I'm still feeling meh about this whole setup.
06:08From a design perspective, there's not quite enough room to have an island this big in this closet.
06:13And to me, it feels like an afterthought. This room is an afterthought. Let's see if this en suite is
06:21redeeming. Oh, okay. Wow. Okay. I stand corrected about the level of detail here. Thank you.
06:28This vaulted ceiling, it really highlights this tub. It's such a vibe. Yes. Okay. We love this.
06:36Like, come on. How many people do you think you could fit in there? Come on, Henry. Come on, Henry.
06:40This isn't even appropriate. At least three. These judges are getting real close. It's a huge shower.
06:46All right. I love it. You guys ready for the next house? Let's do it. Ready. Let's go. Let's do
06:50it.
06:51The judges may be gone, but the commentary circus refuses to pack up its tent. Here come opponents
06:57Paul and Luana. Okay. Ooh. Do you like the millwork? It's more traditional than what we like. I feel like
07:03our space is more very unique. Wow factor. You see this everywhere. I don't care for this so far.
07:12I'm not feeling that marine type of window. Marine. Marine. Get out of here. And the sinks could
07:19have been bigger. Okay. Yeah. Sure. I think our bathroom has it for sure. Ours checks off all the
07:24boxes. Yeah. I've just not seen anything unique about it. Thank you very much. How are you feeling?
07:32Pretty good. I mean, I'm pretty good. I'm just completely not interested in their opinion.
07:38From one confident attitude to another. I think our home is going to win. Our home is modern,
07:45contemporary. Everything we did was renovated from the original structure. It was a full cut.
07:50Seven years of renovations. We're almost done. The secret weapon of this home is really the primary
07:56bedroom with high ceilings. And the view that you have, you feel like you're in a tree house.
08:01Yeah. With the squirrels. They like to climb up the quartet. So it's a gem for local wildlife.
08:06Got it. Winning this competition would be just a really nice recognition of our investment of time,
08:15pain, money, and recognition of the design. Okay. All right. Let's go. Come on.
08:22All right. Ooh, look what we got here. The rusted, oxidized planters. With the wood,
08:27it's just so stunning. All right. Let's do this.
08:32Ooh. Okay. Oh, the mid-century modern is just my favorite. This house is a vibe. It's great that
08:39they made it into an intimate setting, but it is good for one person, maybe two. I don't think that
08:44they're expecting to fit a party of 20 in here. I think it's just a chill space in a great
08:50spot at
08:50the front of the house. Andrea gets it. And we walked right by something really important.
08:55The powder room. It's, um, it's a little, you know. Oh, man. I mean, that was a bit
09:01overdramatic. That's just not how you open a door. It's giving like a renovated added for convenience
09:07because it's not very functional. I think the powder room is quite functional. It has a toilet and a sink.
09:11Yeah, Sasha. What else do you want to do in there? You're not there to read a book.
09:16Yeah. That's for sure. I'm loving this dining spot. Nice. This two-story skylight is something
09:22else, and I love it. It's a spotlight. Thank you, Sasha. Let's see what we got here. Okay.
09:28This is probably where I would live. Yeah. Now that we're coming in here, the space,
09:32it's pretty wide open. And I think it's pretty functional. And as you notice,
09:36this is quartz as well. It's porcelain, not quartz. So you have the full flush between the countertop
09:41tops, the backsplash, the shelving, and the island. That's kind of cool because it keeps
09:45it very, very minimalistic. Love it. Yeah. That's right. That was intentional.
09:49May I just mention the awesome receptacles that they have here? Nice.
09:54Nice. That's so cool. Oh my gosh. The way they are built into this is incredible. I love that.
10:01Okay. That's pretty unique. I haven't seen anything like this before. I'm so glad they noticed that.
10:06Yeah. All right. I've been dying to see color. Okay. We have orange, we have yellow,
10:11and we're continuing with the mid-century modern vibe. It's lovely. Do you guys know how much storage
10:16we have here? Built-in, hidden, gorgeous. This adds a lot of value. Let's just talk about these
10:23stairs for one second. I don't feel like I'm 100% sold on that design. It just feels a little
10:29bit
10:30rickety. Oh. The stairs are not up against the wall. What's holding this up? Well, that's a good
10:36question. Steel. It's magic. That's the whole point, that they appear to be floating. So I have been
10:44waiting for a wow factor. The wow factor. Oh, wow. This is cool. This is my wow factor.
10:55Oh, wow. This is cool. This is my wow factor. Wow. Wow. The windows are just phenomenal. They are
11:04phenomenal. They are, aren't they? Yeah. I feel like I'm in a Scandinavian chalet or something. I kind of feel
11:11that way too. Yeah. For a tree house. Yeah. It's a tree house. It's incredible. It's incredible.
11:15This is jaw-dropping. Yeah. Jaw-dropping. Oh my goodness. So this bathroom is wide open though. No
11:22doors. No door. Not even a pocket. Oh my gosh, you're right. There's no door. I'm a little concerned.
11:28What if the kid walks in? Or your mother-in-law. What about the steam from the shower? Just everything's
11:33going out. Never actually had that. I don't know how I feel about this wet room. The shower head just
11:38coming straight down with the bathtub right here. It's very condensed. This length of glass is really
11:43only about five feet. Are we containing the shower spray? I'm not convinced we are. I highly doubt it.
11:49I think the water's going to spray us. It's a wet mess in here. It works perfectly fine. There's
11:55definitely some spaces in here that are working for me and some not so much. Overall, so far, so good.
12:01When
12:02they saw the bedroom, they were like mind blown. Right. Well, let's see what the others say.
12:07Okay, Peter and Amanda. Let's see. Okay. This is different.
12:14I'm actually loving this. This is really, really cool. Like this is the showcase of the home. Yeah.
12:19Yeah. Competition's on. Where do you think we are? I, I think we have a good shot. I think we're,
12:26I don't think this one's much competition for ours. Very minimalistic. Yeah. It's a specific
12:32taste, this home and it's not to my taste. Yeah. Okay, Peter and Amanda. Looking for something to
12:37complain about. I'm not overly concerned. Don't get too comfy, Paul. The judges have one more house
12:43to check out. We purchased this home. It was a small little bungalow. We knocked it down and
12:50created this home. I'm very impressed and I'm very happy with the decisions she made to bring this
12:56home together. But to be 100% fair, there were times where I gave her a hard time, especially with
13:02the greens in the office. I thought it was risky. Yeah. I said, it's just paint.
13:09Literally, if you hate it, we can redo it. No big deal, right? It's just paint. Yeah. Yeah,
13:14Peter, live a little. The secret weapon of this house is our kitchen. Open space, marble. I don't
13:21have any formal design training, so I want to see what other people think of my work. Do I have
13:28what
13:28it takes to be a designer? Ready? Yeah. Let's get out of here. Okay.
13:36Okay, here comes the next house. Let's see what they got. I do like the gothic vibes. It's really
13:42moody. That's my thing. Look at the chandelier. Whoa. Sparkly, luxurious. Beautiful. Yes, that was the
13:51reaction I want everyone to have. Let's check out this office here. Oh, emerald green. It's gorgeous.
13:58I do love an above ground office. It's such a great value add. I'm a boss. This is my office.
14:04Come
14:04on in. Take me serious. Let's make money. I love these judges. I want to meet them. I agree. All
14:11right.
14:12Another moody space. Yeah. What do you guys think of the black toilet? Love it. Love it? Yeah. Yeah.
14:18It makes this room, doesn't it? Mm-hmm. I'm so glad we went with the black. Great dining table space.
14:24What is that? Oh. Should I pull on it? Oh, don't pull that. Do not.
14:31Stand clear. This door may roll down at any time. That's what it is. It's fireproof blinds.
14:38So this is like a requirement. Is that what it is? It is if you want to have a window
14:43this close to the
14:44line. I can't stop looking at it. Forget fire safety. This eyesore of a wire just became the
14:51main character. I don't know. I don't know. I'm not loving the flow through here. If I'm coming to the
14:59living room or the kitchen, I'm basically obstructed by my own furniture, right? It feels
15:04almost like I'm going to trip. It doesn't work for me. It works for me. I don't know how you
15:09could trip
15:09over a couch unless you're like a few deep maybe. I don't know. Solid theory, Peter. Can you imagine
15:15if we had like green couches in here? Just that like extra pop of emerald just to bring it all
15:19around.
15:20It would be so nice. I think they're wrong. They're wrong. I would be so tacky. No, it has to
15:25be neutral.
15:27I do love this kitchen. This is the type of value add that you can feel. I do love it.
15:31Yeah,
15:31the hardware is great. Love how it matches the faucets and the pot filler. Yep. I saw some cupboards
15:37under here. I want to know if they're real and they're real. I love an island with storage. You
15:42can never have enough storage. If one day they put all that stuff in there and the next thing you
15:47know, guests are coming. We've got to grab some stuff. It's like, oh no, we got to scramble. Grab some
15:52stuff. Well, that's long-term storage. In my house, when we're prepping, we're prepping before the people
15:57come. So for me, that wouldn't be, that wouldn't detract from the functionality for me. Let's head upstairs.
16:03All right. The green's back. Okay. That's a pretty big window standing in the bathtub right here.
16:12Actually, Henry, nobody can see you because it's a reflective window. Let's talk about that tile.
16:19I love it right now. Will I love it in 10 years? Possibly not. Like back in the 80s,
16:26where everything was pink, including the toilets. Did that age well? Not so much.
16:30No. In 10 years, we're going to be in a different home. Do it again. Remodel. Remodel.
16:36Here we are. This feels like a primary. It's plain. I feel like they're missing an
16:42opportunity with a center fixture. You could have added some zhuzh into this room, right?
16:47I don't think they're blown away, but... It's simple. They're not done that area yet.
16:52Yes. Okay. Look at this gold hardware, guys. Wow.
16:57I like what it's doing for this space. And I do love the arched feature that screams spa.
17:04There's some really nice surprises in this house. Good job, Peter and Amanda.
17:07I think they like your taste. So I think we got this in the bag.
17:11I think so, too. And just when you thought you could relax,
17:16opponents Sharon and Jason roll in with their opinion grenades.
17:19Okay. Let's see what they say. All right.
17:23They're also playing it safe. Look, they have 18 shades of white in this house.
17:27Oh, gloves are off, eh? Oh, my goodness. Not true.
17:31It's actually a creamy, off-white yellow. If they have company, go sit over there. Look.
17:36Bossy. No, no, no. But look. Hi, how are you?
17:40Oh, hi over there. How's it going? How was your day?
17:43Oh, it was great. How was yours? It's excellent. I'm glad that you're here.
17:47Yeah. They need hearing aids?
17:48I feel like we're really connecting. We are connecting.
17:51Yeah. Okay, enough exaggeration.
17:53Like, seriously. I think we might have a bit of competition on our hands,
17:58but I still feel like ours we have taken to another level in a lot of ways.
18:04Ours is... I don't want to say better, but I'm going to say better.
18:07I think they're just jealous. They are.
18:09Because that's... They have nothing else to say.
18:12Yeah. I feel good.
18:13I'm excited for the results. Well, I guess we'll see.
18:15Yeah. All right.
18:16Judges, design, function, and added value are your metrics.
18:20Time to pick which house is top of this block.
18:23Okay, let's start with Sharon and Jason.
18:26I love the added value with that beautiful backyard offering you so much relaxation.
18:31The flow and function on the main floor was fantastic.
18:35Just walking into the house itself is already inviting, and there are parts, elements like the
18:40bathroom. It's a resort in the city. That's what makes this home very awesome to me.
18:44I had a hard time connecting personally with them, but as soon as we walked upstairs, it was wonderful.
18:49That photo wall was fantastic.
18:51A major detractor for me in this house was the lack of design aspects in the primary bedroom and walk
18:59-in closet.
19:01And Luanna and Paul's house.
19:03Mm-hmm.
19:04Inside has been absolutely transformed into this mid-century modern masterpiece.
19:09I felt like on first impression when we're walking in, we were a little bit squeezed,
19:13but I love the storage. I think that's such an added value because it's so seamless.
19:18I have to say that walking into the primary bedroom area was my wow factor of the day.
19:23Hands down, nothing else came close to that.
19:25But then when I saw the bathroom, I was like, I don't know how much I love this.
19:29That ensuite, it looks like a big wet water bath for me.
19:34And how about Amanda and Peter's house? Outside of this beautiful gothic revival type house.
19:40Fabulous.
19:41As soon as you walk in, your eyes just go right to that chandelier. It's absolutely stunning.
19:45And having your office right off the entry is such a value add.
19:48That deep green and the gold finishes, amazing.
19:52I would have loved to see that style throughout the house a little bit more.
19:55Yeah, it'd be great.
19:55Yeah.
19:56As soon as you move to the back of the house, that's where you lost me.
20:00Yeah, I'm with you.
20:01The first thought in my head was that fire thing by the window.
20:05Oh, yeah. Definitely an eyesore.
20:07I felt like I was going to run into that couch going between the dining room and the kitchen.
20:12Okay, I think the time has come. We have to make a decision. I don't know.
20:16What do you think?
20:16My head is spinning.
20:17Yeah.
20:17Same here.
20:18Ah!
20:25Who's house will be crowned top of the block?
20:28I don't like to sound too cocky. But like, I really do feel like our house should and could
20:35and will be the winner.
20:37I think the judges got the house, especially Andrea. Overall, they were impressed. And there
20:41was a lot of wow factor that was clear in the bedroom. I feel very confident now.
20:45The judges did respond to the bold colours.
20:49It seemed like mostly positive feedback, so I think we could win this.
20:53The verdict is in.
20:55I'm feeling pretty good about our chances in this competition, but I guess we'll find out soon.
20:59I have full confidence that we have a better built home, better design home, better everything home.
21:05I think we nailed it. I feel like we won it.
21:26I'm feeling very excited.
21:32Yeah.
21:32We're happy we won. Obviously, it's gratifying because we put so much work into this home,
21:38especially for Sharon, who designed most of it.
21:41Do you guys want to come in and hang out in the back?
21:43We do want to come in.
21:43I mean, you know, did you bring your bathing suits?
21:45There's no corners spared in this home. It's stunning. It's beautiful. It works.
21:50And the design overall and the custom cabinetry is very cohesive throughout the house.
21:55They knocked it out of the park.
21:56We thought we had the wow factor. They did say the bedroom was mind-blowing, so I'm surprised.
22:03I'm a bit disappointed.
22:05I'm sad about not winning, but it was a wonderful experience.
22:09Hearing the judges nail my thoughts exactly in every space of the home, that was a win for us.
22:15Yeah, 100%.
22:16We're standing here in the backyard. Right behind us, there's a memorial to my mom,
22:21and we wouldn't have this house without her.
22:23Her essence is still here, even though she's gone, and we won this competition.
22:27Yeah.
22:27We'd be proud of what we made, and she'd be happy.
22:30Yep.
