00:02The gloves are off as three neighbors step into the ring for an all-out bro down to see
00:07whose house rules the street. While the judges cast some cutting critiques, the contestants
00:14watch and come back with some jabs of their own. Completely different pattern, so I'm not really
00:19sure it's working for me right now. Okay, now hold on a second. These acts on walls, that's what you
00:23want. You want pop, that's the whole concept. It's very trendy, but it's going to be outdated
00:27pretty soon. Trendy, I don't think so. I get the feeling of man space right away. Ouch. Gabriel's
00:34doubling down on his dual accents and tasteful textures. It has a very like industrial, modern
00:39kind of look that really pops. These guys got zero chance. Brian is confident his open flow design
00:46will shine. We have a little bit old, we have a little bit of new. Our seeker up in is
00:51the open
00:51concept. Lou's betting on his moody and masculine remodeled bungalow. This house is a complete
00:57winner because it's warm, it's inviting. I'm pretty confident that this house should take the
01:03competition. When it's all said and judged, only one neighbour will serve up the swagger and claim
01:08the crown as top of the block. This small town is known for its growing neighbourhoods and close-knit
01:17vibe, where friendly face-offs are settled on the daily. Set to stoke the street rivalry,
01:22these judges are coming in with some hard truths. Nosy neighbour, Melissa. I don't like junk. I will
01:30find those little things to call out. Real estate agent, Rodney. I'm looking for that complete package.
01:36Very critical, but fair. And style-naven, Cynthia. I am a little nosy. For years, I've been walking my
01:43block critiquing my neighbour's homes. The rules of this competition are simple. The combination of design,
01:48function, and added value must give the winner the edge over the other houses. They've got a pantry.
01:54Look at that. That is a mother's dream.
02:00Is it comfortable, Rodney? It works. It's time to find out whose home will reign supreme.
02:06Let the house wars begin.
02:14I've had to sub up my design vibe of this house. It would be definitely modern, industrial, and bright.
02:20Myself and my wife live in this house. I think our secret weapon in the house is the entrance. You
02:25come in,
02:25you see that ceiling. I think it's almost 20 feet. You do get a wow perspective. I have put a
02:30lot of sweat,
02:30a lot of work, a lot of thought into the house. I love the open concept, the tones and mix
02:35of colours.
02:36I love these bad boys. The reason why I entered this competition is validation.
02:41Has all the hard work that we've put in paid off? I think we're good. I feel really confident in
02:46everything we've done. We're definitely going to be the top of the block.
02:55As our judges arrive, armed with rapid fire opinions, Gabriel locks in, ready to shoot back.
03:02All right, let's see what we have here. A little nervous, to be honest.
03:06I really like the contrasting roofs. They have the shingles on the top and the aluminum roof over
03:10top of the front door and the garage. So I'm feeling good, but maybe they're just
03:14setting me up for a failure later. We'll see. Wow. I like this. Look at this bench.
03:21Makes it more functional. It's a winner. Melissa knows. Wonderful first impression.
03:26Look at these accent walls. Oh my goodness. They go right up to the ceiling.
03:31But they're completely different patterns, so I'm not really sure it's working for me right now.
03:35Okay, now hold on a second. These accent walls, that's what you want. You want pop. That's the
03:38whole concept. One is a little bit more busy than the other. The accent wall, where the stairs are,
03:44I don't think it was necessary just because there's enough windows happening and letting in that natural
03:49light. And all that trim means dusting forever. I think I just would have liked to see a flush look.
03:54That is so harsh. I think they're beautiful. There's no chandelier, guys.
03:58We really wanted a chandelier. To be honest, I've been lazy. I've been putting it off.
04:02There is a little bay window. So even that would be a nice peekaboo from the outside.
04:07Agreed. That's missing because this is a spectacular front entrance.
04:12Let's talk about this ceiling. Wow. This comfort ceiling is wonderful. I think this is sensory overload.
04:19What? That's the whole concept, Cynthia. You want to be able to look everywhere and you're like,
04:22bam, bam, bam. Everything's just popping out at you.
04:25I love how we brought in the natural woods. It breaks up the contemporary that has been happening.
04:31Beautiful contemporary fireplace. Adds a lot of value.
04:34I thought I hated you at first, but it changed my mind, Rodney.
04:37Did you notice the speakers? Oh, okay.
04:40Gotta have built-in speakers.
04:42That was okay.
04:43I do really like this kitchen.
04:46It looks beautiful.
04:47This accent wall with the wallpaper really ties in the wrought iron fixtures, the backsplash,
04:53the flooring. It is super spicy, super fun. It makes you want to have a good time.
04:59I think it makes you want to have a drink.
05:01I actually really like the round table. I think for the space that it's in, it works.
05:05They've got a pantry.
05:06Oh, wow.
05:07Look at that.
05:07It's huge.
05:08I love the pantry.
05:09That is a mother's dream.
05:12That is my dream. After having a pantry for the first time in my life,
05:15I don't know how people live without a pantry.
05:17Coming into this area, we see this herringbone. I think it's really cool.
05:21It's a little bit busy with everything else that's going on in this area.
05:25Yeah.
05:25This kitchen really works. It's functional. It just flows really, really nicely.
05:30I think it looks great.
05:32He's taken this cookie cutter house and taken it to the next level.
05:35Oh man, the upstairs.
05:37Oh, so this must be the primary suite.
05:39This bedroom, I knew this was the weak point. I'm worried.
05:47Oh man, I'm nervous.
05:49You hardly ever see carpet anymore.
05:51Hardwood floors would actually add more value to this house.
05:54They caught the carpet.
05:55Did you guys notice the popcorn ceilings?
05:57And the popcorn ceilings.
05:59Ouch, that's not good.
06:00Pressure's rising, Gabriel, and your ceiling's caving in on you.
06:03I am so surprised in a new build that they have popcorn ceilings.
06:06But I guess if you're going to have carpet, you might as well have the popcorn ceiling.
06:10Right?
06:10Ah, the judges are killing me upstairs.
06:12Oh, wow.
06:13I do like this.
06:15Look at this tub.
06:17Hey.
06:17Stand alone tub, real nice.
06:19Never been used.
06:20Love the layout.
06:20This is very modern.
06:22And they went with the industrial light fixtures again, right?
06:25Yeah.
06:26There you go, Cynthia, you know.
06:28This is an absolute contender.
06:29It's a winner.
06:30This is going to be a tough one.
06:31This is not a cookie cutter home at all.
06:33That is for sure.
06:34That's really what I wanted to hear.
06:36But I feel like almost like they're looking for little things.
06:38Like maybe they're like, wow, this is a great house.
06:40So we've got to find something wrong with it.
06:42Spoiler alert, Gabriel.
06:43Judge is going to judge.
06:44And here's your opponent, Lou.
06:46Not judgy.
06:47I get the accent walls.
06:48A little busy, but cool nonetheless.
06:50OK.
06:51Maybe a little.
06:51This staircase over here is pretty funky.
06:53That's right, Lou.
06:54Watch out.
06:55Wow, this kitchen's definitely nice.
06:58But I think I got more storage space.
07:00Island's pretty much smaller than mine, too.
07:02But is it nicer?
07:03I think that's the world you have to ask yourself.
07:05What I don't have is the fireplace.
07:07As nice as this living room is, I still think mine is so much warmer.
07:11It's definitely a really nice subdivision house over here.
07:14Not cookie cutter, Lou.
07:15But I don't know.
07:17I like my place a lot more.
07:19Ah, pff.
07:19Leave.
07:21I still feel that I have a winner.
07:23I'm worried about the upstairs.
07:25I'm not going to lie.
07:25I guess we'll have to wait and see.
07:29Round one is done.
07:31Now it's Brian's turn in the ring.
07:32I live here with my wife, Stephanie, my son, Tyler, and my youngest son, Austin.
07:37We've lived here for just over 11 years.
07:40It's a custom home.
07:41It's such a mess, you know?
07:42So it's very unique to our style.
07:45Our design style was basically, we have a little bit of old, we have a little bit of new.
07:50But it flows very nicely.
07:53This competition top of the block is very important to me because one of my friends,
07:57Louie, once I found out that he was competing, I said, no, no, no, he's going down.
08:02Oh, we got this.
08:04My house is going to be top of the block.
08:07Let's win this sucker.
08:09I love this area.
08:13Let's have a look.
08:15So this is Brian's house.
08:16I love the stucco.
08:18Very homey, cozy vibe.
08:20They have the solid stone slab steps.
08:22Those are really a nice added touch.
08:24We're very heavy.
08:25I had to lift those steps all by myself and put them in place.
08:28Way to step up your game, Brian.
08:31Oh, wow.
08:33Oh, the stairs are right here.
08:35I like it.
08:36I'm a white picket kind of girl.
08:37Very traditional style.
08:39The white balusters are getting lost.
08:41Right.
08:42You think maybe if it was a wrought iron, it would look...
08:44They actually should be a bold statement.
08:46That's kind of funny.
08:47Cynthia, you're all dressed in white and you don't like the white tones.
08:50You know what the space is missing?
08:52Closet space.
08:53Where do you put your jackets, your shoes?
08:56You just throw our stuff when we come in.
08:57It's easy.
08:59Very open, very modern.
09:01I love the neutral colors, the geometric shapes on the wall.
09:04It's very trendy, but it's going to be outdated pretty soon.
09:08Trendy?
09:09I don't think so.
09:10This is not going out of styling.
09:11I'll tell you what's going out of ship lab.
09:13Okay?
09:14Ship lab, like at Louie's place.
09:15That's going out.
09:16I do really love that they did the white.
09:19There's really no artwork on the wall.
09:21Once you put an accent wall in like this, you're really limited to what else you can put on the
09:26wall.
09:27Oh, man.
09:29Yeah, it's true, but that in itself is art, right?
09:32So that's what we were looking at when we installed that.
09:35He did the two separate chairs, which are great, but what could have been nice just to maximize the
09:40seating area is a nice L-shape couch just to give more space for entertaining.
09:45It's time for a sectional in that area.
09:47You know what the space is missing? A fireplace.
09:51Oh, totally.
09:51Oh, you're right.
09:52Totally.
09:52To make it that cozy, absolutely.
09:55We used to have a fireplace there, but it's not the same without a wood-burning fireplace.
09:59That's the one regret I have.
10:00I like the black accents with the black coffee table.
10:04I do love the crown molding and the pot lights that they did here.
10:08I think that is a great look.
10:09Cynthia seems to be coming around.
10:11I like that she liked the pot lights.
10:13So what do you think about this open, beautiful dining area?
10:17This is really different.
10:18Yes.
10:19Usually you see the bankette up against a wall, but here they've put it on the other side of the
10:23table.
10:23I think it's a great look.
10:24And you could fit a lot of people in this.
10:26I don't know, you guys.
10:27Like, is this chandelier not positioned right?
10:29I think it almost should be turned around the other way to match the length of the table.
10:33Yeah.
10:33It's a fail for me.
10:34Move the table or move the chandelier.
10:37It worked for the old table we had.
10:39We used to have a round table in there.
10:41This kitchen, wow.
10:44That is an island with a side of kitchen.
10:46You can tell they entertain.
10:48You've got these beautiful stainless steel appliances do add value to the house.
10:52I do notice the full length cabinets, which is wonderful.
10:56Yes, you have lights in them as well, which is incredible value to add to a kitchen space.
11:01I agree.
11:02Follow me to the primary suite.
11:04Look how pretty this is.
11:06Gorgeous.
11:07It looks really elegant.
11:08They have crystal lights to go with the crystal chandelier.
11:12I like everything she has to say.
11:14It's very intuitive.
11:15I like it.
11:15I love the windows in this primary suite.
11:18Oh, look at this.
11:20I love a Juliet balcony.
11:22I think the whole house has such great natural light.
11:25Finally, Cynthia, you're coming around a bit.
11:29Wow, this is very different.
11:39Beautiful, rustic, wood-look porcelain tiles.
11:43This picks up from the rustic downstairs in the kitchen in the dining area.
11:47So now I'm understanding the vibe of the home as well.
11:51What I would have liked to see maybe a different chandelier on top, something a little bit more grander
11:56to pick up on the grandness of the chandelier in the primary suite.
12:01I agree.
12:02That clawfoot bathtub.
12:04Are you diving in?
12:06Yeah.
12:07Is it comfortable, Rodney?
12:09It works.
12:10Definitely out of value.
12:11Out of value right here.
12:12I don't think I've ever used that bathtub.
12:14It does get used by the kids when they were young bathing for sure.
12:18Overall, this house shows extremely well.
12:20It does.
12:21It's a great home.
12:23I think that went very well.
12:25And as much as sometimes I don't like hearing some of Cynthia's stuff,
12:28I do agree with some of the things she did say.
12:30Let's see what happens.
12:32And right on cue, opponent Gabriel is coming in hot with a full barrage of banter.
12:38High ceilings is nice.
12:40Family room.
12:41I do like the trim on the wall.
12:43I got the same thing at my house.
12:44I do like the glass.
12:45We should have done that at our house.
12:47Easy mistake, Gabriel.
12:48It looks like the primary.
12:50I think they did what they could with a room that in my opinion is a little bit small.
12:53Ours is definitely bigger.
12:55It's a little bit small because our bathroom's huge, Gabriel.
12:57I got a compliment on the hardwood flooring because we have carpet upstairs,
13:00which I might lose a competition just in that carpet.
13:03Carpet.
13:03Come on, Gabriel.
13:04Get in the 2000s.
13:07Yeah, open space.
13:08I liked it.
13:08But I think it's got nothing on my house.
13:11We'll see, Gabriel.
13:12We'll see.
13:17It's the final round, and Lou's ready to come out swinging.
13:21I live in a lovely little 1953 bungalow.
13:26I had to do a lot of corrective work over here.
13:29And plus, I also wanted to put my own finishing touches.
13:32I got to put this away.
13:33The darker kitchen concept can definitely be polarizing,
13:37but I truly wanted to create my own space.
13:39All right, pal.
13:40I'll make this up to you.
13:41I promise.
13:42I didn't want to go too bright, nor did I want to go too trendy either.
13:47And, you know, fortunately, I think I have good taste.
13:50Quickly over here.
13:52This is certainly a dude's house.
13:55Oh, sorry.
13:56I put it together.
13:58I selected every single little finish in it.
14:00Just going to be out a short little while.
14:02Then our house is going to win, all right, pal?
14:03When it comes to any game day, any get together, I can bet that my face beats out any bar.
14:09Let's go.
14:10Good boy.
14:13All right.
14:14Let's see what happens here.
14:16Look at this home.
14:17It's a bungalow, but it looks like it's been totally renovated.
14:20This has fantastic curb appeal.
14:22I love the fact that they have some nice landscaping that welcomes you up the stairs.
14:25It could get some adjustments.
14:27If we put in some different trees and put in some nice florals, just to give it a little bit
14:32of a pop.
14:33That's definitely all good things to take under consideration.
14:37Oh, wow.
14:40Oh, I love this.
14:42I love the contrast.
14:44They actually did an accent wall, but he did black.
14:48It's minimal and it works.
14:50You know what?
14:50I get the feeling of man space right away.
14:53Totally.
14:54That's bang on exactly what I was talking about.
14:57But it's not overly men space.
15:00I think it's a nice, like, as a woman, I would be happy to live in this house right now.
15:05You don't want it to look too, too masculine to scare off the women, right?
15:08It almost feels like a loft, right?
15:11It really does.
15:11I think here you could have done a little bit bigger area rug.
15:14I really like the hardwood floor, so I didn't want to cover it up too, too much.
15:18Look how cozy this is.
15:20This is fantastic.
15:22And you get a lot of space for entertaining, which is really nice.
15:26What do we think about the dining area?
15:28It's a little tight.
15:29I would much rather have seen them have no dining table and extend the island outwards.
15:35And it serves as an island slash dining table.
15:37I personally wanted a separate space.
15:39I don't know if I agree with that though, Rodney.
15:41This is a nice little candle lit area.
15:43It's a little more intimate.
15:45If he wants to have a romantic night, right Cynthia?
15:49It's exactly what I wanted to do here.
15:52What a man's kitchen.
15:54Look at this deep blue color.
15:56I even like the gold handles.
15:57Right.
15:58Nice accent piece.
15:59But everything is black on black on black.
16:01It might be a little bit too dark.
16:04Maybe I went a little bit too, too dark across the board.
16:08And tons of storage.
16:10Tons of storage, yeah.
16:12And the drawers.
16:13The drawers instead of the cabinets.
16:14That's a real added touch.
16:16So a kitchen like this with the large island adds a lot of value to the home.
16:20Look at this backsplash.
16:22They have continued the counter all the way up the back.
16:26And it's a seamless look.
16:27Yes.
16:28Did you notice a black sink?
16:30Again, that's that black on black.
16:31I understand the look he was going for.
16:33But maybe if he brought out some stainless steel, it could have still worked.
16:37I love that sink.
16:39That's actually my favorite part of the kitchen, to be honest with you.
16:41It definitely looks nicer than a stainless steel, in my opinion.
16:45Someone went a little bit pot light happy in here because there is a lot of pot lights.
16:51Hindsight, that's probably something I would have fixed.
16:53Like a nice, simple pendant light over the island.
16:56What they could have done is they could have put a few individual pendant
16:59lightings over top of the island, which would have mixed it up a little bit.
17:02Called it.
17:04Oh, wow.
17:05Pocket door.
17:07Where's the handle?
17:08I just got used to it.
17:09It worked.
17:10So I thought, eh, it's fine the way it is.
17:13Check out this bathroom here.
17:15It's really nice.
17:16First impressions, definitely colors.
17:18A win for me.
17:19Having the glass shower, too, gives it that openness, which is really nice.
17:23Makes the space feel bigger.
17:28Lou's primary bedroom.
17:29I think it just doesn't have that loo finish that I was looking for.
17:36Ouch.
17:36The primary bedroom could definitely use a bit of help.
17:40This furniture is just a little bit too big for this room.
17:43That's a bedroom set that I love for my old place.
17:47I know it doesn't really fit the room.
17:49This competition is really heating up.
17:51Sometimes the size of the house just doesn't matter.
17:53I agree.
17:54This was a great home.
17:57I'm really happy with how they responded.
18:00Hold that thought, Lou, because your friend turned rival, Brian,
18:04is about to stir the pot with his own opinions.
18:06Oh, boy.
18:07Now Brian's going to my house.
18:08In here.
18:10I hope I locked all the drawers.
18:13Open concept.
18:15Nice sectional.
18:16I sit here all the time.
18:17What's this guy doing?
18:18He's putting his shoes on my couch here.
18:20Watch TV.
18:21Next thing you know, he's me checking under my cushions for change.
18:24I really don't like that wall too much, though.
18:26He's making fun of my shiplap wall.
18:28But I don't think anyone does this too much anymore.
18:31That thing is so cool.
18:32It's a great table, but too many seats for one, Lonely Lou.
18:37Ouch.
18:39Very nice with the black accent.
18:41I like it.
18:41It could be a game changer for him, but I still don't think he's got it.
18:47I think I do.
18:49I got this one in the bag.
18:54Bye.
18:54Get out of my house.
18:57All right, judges.
18:58Design, function, and added value are your metrics.
19:01Time to pick which house is on top of this block.
19:04We've seen some incredible houses.
19:06Absolutely.
19:07So, Gabrielle's house.
19:08I love the front entrance.
19:10It was dramatic, but functional.
19:12As you walked through that hallway and you see that coffered ceiling, that was a look.
19:17That fireplace knocked it out of the park.
19:19Love the modern style.
19:20It did not look like your typical cookie cutter house.
19:23But there was a lot going on.
19:24There was two accent walls that were completely different from each other.
19:28Too trendy for me.
19:29For me, it would be the carpet in the primary room.
19:32Let's recap Brian's house.
19:35I did like that open concept and that huge island.
19:38I think my favourite part about Brian's house was the primary suite with the chandelier.
19:43The Juliet balcony gave it that elegance that I was looking for.
19:47There's plenty of windows, open concept, beautiful geometric accent wall.
19:51But as you walk into the house, there's no closet space.
19:55I think it really was lacking a fireplace.
19:57What did you think about Lou's house?
19:59I thought that kitchen was a showstopper.
20:01Very dramatic, extremely masculine.
20:04Even though it was quite dark, I thought the bathroom was great with the tiles.
20:09I liked Lou's Lou.
20:10I liked that open concept living room space that seamlessly blends into the kitchen.
20:14But you know what? When you got back to the bedroom, there was really not much going on.
20:19And the furniture was just oversized.
20:21I'm still not a fan of that smaller eat-in kitchen area.
20:24When we look back at the home, so all very different.
20:28This is going to be a really tough decision for all of us.
20:36The verdict is in. Whose house will be crowned? Top of the block.
20:40The judges, I think a couple of things they said, I 100% do not agree with them.
20:45After seeing what the judges had to say about my house, it's tough. It's tough to hear.
20:48I like some of their points. Some of them, eh.
20:51Let's see how this goes.
20:53The main thing I found the judges were being harsh on is saying the kitchen is a little too dark.
20:58I'm actually shocked.
21:01Come on, like, look at my house. You walk in, that wow factor's just there the entire time.
21:07I feel good. I still think I got this one in the bag.
21:12I think I got this, but I think I'm top of the block.
21:26Hey, Gabrielle. We're here to let you know that you are the winner of...
21:33Really? I won. You won.
21:36Congratulations, Jen.
21:38Honestly, it feels really good to be the winner. I did not expect it, but here we are. It's exciting.
21:42We love your such a style. A little quirky, a little spicy, but that is you.
21:46Thank you so much, guys. I really appreciate it.
21:48Congratulations.
21:50You know, as we approached the house, it seemed like it was going to be just another cookie cutter home.
21:53But when we entered through those doors, incredible. Not a cookie cutter whatsoever.
21:59Right from the main open floor concept to all the way upstairs, it just had great flow.
22:05It's really that house that you're going to walk into, and you're going to remember it.
22:09Yeah, it's unfortunate that we didn't win on top of the block, but we still love our house.
22:14I can't lie. I'm a little disappointed about not winning, but listen, the competition was pretty steep.
22:19It's all good.
22:22To me, I think the happiest thing about winning is just the bragging rights.
22:25Number one, top of the block, baby.
