00:02A battle is brewing in this east side urban enclave.
00:05Three boastful homeowners are going head to head
00:08to see whose tiny house looms large.
00:10As the judges size up these compact castles,
00:14the contestants watch, ready to clap back.
00:16You cook down there, but there's nowhere to eat down there.
00:20So you are walking up.
00:22He's like.
00:24I just don't know how unique it is,
00:27or if she's just following the trends on the internet.
00:29Guilty as charged, like.
00:31Angelo and Jeff believe their one-of-a-kind design
00:33stands tall above the crowd.
00:36You see the functionality, you're like, oh, wow.
00:38This home is a for sure clear winner, hands down.
00:42Linda is leaning on her historical cottage charm
00:44to take the title.
00:45The secret weapon of this house is that it's
00:48a cozy, intimate dwelling.
00:50Stacey believes her boho bungalow will capture this contest.
00:54From the unexpectedness to all the different textures,
00:58my house really stands out.
01:00When it's all said and judged, only one neighbor
01:02will serve up the swagger and claim the crown as top of the block.
01:09In this close-knit corner of the city, space is at a premium,
01:13so every inch counts.
01:14It's where homeowners try to turn micro into marvelous.
01:19Locked and loaded with large opinions,
01:21these judges are here to drop some truth bombs.
01:24Nosy neighbor Jacob.
01:26I know what I like, I know what I don't,
01:28and I am judging everything.
01:30Real estate agent Kent.
01:32I bring expertise, and I'm excited to see these tiny houses.
01:36And outspoken introvert Catherine.
01:38I'm somebody who's never shied away from giving their opinion,
01:41and I can't wait to see the choices that these homeowners have made.
01:46The rules of this competition are simple.
01:48The combination of design, function, and added value
01:51must give the winner the edge over the other houses.
01:54This is wild.
01:58There's mirrors on the ceiling.
02:00Oh, wow.
02:01It's time to find out whose home will reign supreme.
02:04Let the house wars begin.
02:10We've been living here for about a year now.
02:12Yeah, as far as we know, it's the skinniest house in the country.
02:15If you walk a little too fast, you'll miss it.
02:18So when you think about a house being eight feet wide,
02:21you think about how that's even possible to live there.
02:24For us, it kind of attracted us and pulled us in.
02:26It's awesome. We love it.
02:27There's a spot over here.
02:28Yeah, yeah, right up.
02:29Come on, reach, reach.
02:30Tippy toes.
02:30I'm on my tippy toes.
02:32I'm super excited.
02:33I love showing off the space that we live in.
02:36Jeff might feel slightly different.
02:39I'm kind of nervous to get red for some of our choices
02:43and things that work for us.
02:45If we don't win, I'm going to get a long list for my mom
02:49of things that we could have done better.
02:50She's going to be like, well, I could have helped you.
02:53The only way to avoid that is if we do win.
02:55All right.
02:55Andrea, almost done.
02:56We should probably get out of here.
02:57Working on it.
02:59This is definitely a winning house.
03:07Here we go.
03:09As the judges arrive to share their opinions,
03:12Angelo and Jeff are ready to dish some discs of their own.
03:15I don't think I've ever seen a house this narrow.
03:18Yeah.
03:19Skinniest house in the city.
03:22Wow.
03:23It has this great foyer, eh?
03:25It feels cozy, but it's also very claustrophobic already.
03:31Okay.
03:32Give it a chance.
03:32Yeah.
03:33Well, they have drinks ready for you guys.
03:35Give us a little bit of sugar to get us talking all sweet.
03:39This is a bathroom.
03:41What?
03:42How do they fit a powder room right here?
03:44It's an airplane bathroom.
03:46I like them at first.
03:48For eight feet.
03:50Yeah.
03:51It's bright.
03:52Yeah.
03:52I really like the copper exposed here.
03:55I think I have to give them the style point from a exposed wood going to granite countertop,
04:01white cabinets.
04:02Kent's really trying to sell it here.
04:03I love that.
04:04Let's hope the other judges are buying what Kent is selling.
04:06I think a value add of this place is tons of cabinet space right here.
04:11And this, all the pots and pans up here, like these knitted fruit sacks, they're so weird,
04:17but hilarious.
04:18Yeah.
04:19Okay.
04:20I think overall, despite a lot of the problems that narrow houses have,
04:24I think they actually solved a lot of it with this kitchen.
04:28Love that.
04:29I will say it's a little suburban-y.
04:33I wish it had a little more character.
04:35Ouch.
04:36Burn.
04:37I think that our other parts of our house will make up for it.
04:39Totally.
04:40This is a minefield for the vertically gifted.
04:43Don't be such a drama queen, Jacob.
04:45Oh.
04:46Oh, I love how bright this is already.
04:48See, this room's giving personality.
04:49I know who these people are now.
04:51Okay, there it is.
04:52I don't think I got that as much downstairs.
04:54I can imagine lovely meals here, but you cook down there,
04:58but there's nowhere to eat down there.
05:00So you are walking up all those stairs.
05:04Well, we don't walk like that, but.
05:06And then eating here.
05:07Well, he's like, who does that?
05:11I want to imagine I'm here at a dinner party.
05:15I don't want to be sitting on your side.
05:20He chose the tightest chair.
05:22I don't know that this is giving,
05:24having my friends and family over to hang out here.
05:26Oh, no, like this is maybe two couples having dinner.
05:31At most.
05:32What's wrong with that?
05:32Good thing we only have two friends.
05:34What's going on here?
05:34Are we getting roasted?
05:36Yes, we're getting roasted.
05:38Another value add for me is that this is a floor-to-ceiling window,
05:43and of course, there's actually a balcony in the front.
05:45So, you know, if they want some fresh air,
05:47they can actually walk up there.
05:49Cool.
05:50The continuity of the exposed wood is very nice as design.
05:53I really like it.
05:54Oh, Kent, you're such a bro.
05:56That area there, like the record player with like that fixture,
06:00like that's a vibe.
06:01Okay, we'll take that.
06:04Oh, I love this.
06:06This is like being at a spa.
06:07Okay.
06:08This is a washroom.
06:09But it's just a bathtub room.
06:12Without any sink.
06:13Oh, Kent, turn on us.
06:14Say it with your chest, Kent.
06:14No, Kent's gonna turn on us.
06:15Where is the toilet?
06:17If they wait 10 seconds, they'll see the second washroom
06:19around the corner.
06:20It feels very downtown, very unique.
06:24But despite generally liking what I see,
06:27this is the most claustrophobic I have felt in here.
06:31Go back to her saying it's a spa.
06:33I couldn't survive in here.
06:34This bathroom definitely reminds you that this house
06:37is only eight feet.
06:38There's also three of you in there.
06:39Normally, there's one of us in there.
06:41You tell them, Angelo.
06:42Well, I think we found the toilet.
06:44Oh, yeah, another...
06:46But it's another airport toilet.
06:47Oh, wow, yeah.
06:48Okay, finish strong.
06:50Welcome to the bedroom.
06:51Oh, wow.
06:52So, like, you come into this room and you sleep.
06:55Yeah, that is a bedroom, Jacob.
06:57There's no room for a night table.
06:59You can't even put my body, my legs beside each other,
07:03like, without moving the bed over.
07:05Yeah.
07:05It's okay.
07:06Jacob, you're being so dramatic.
07:12You can't even put my body, my legs beside each other.
07:17You're being so dramatic.
07:18I can't even move my hips.
07:20Oh, my shins.
07:22Oh, my hips.
07:22Oh.
07:23I don't know.
07:23I found this bedroom very cozy.
07:25You cuddle.
07:25You sleep.
07:26It feels nice for me.
07:28See?
07:29I don't know how I feel about this place.
07:30It's cool, but...
07:32They did really well with the eight feet,
07:35but there's so much stuff that's good.
07:38I wish it was all as good as the stuff that works.
07:40The house being just skinny.
07:42I like it, honestly.
07:43Wow.
07:44That was a humbling experience.
07:47Buck up, guys.
07:48Because while the judges move on to the next house,
07:51opponent Stacey is here for her own personal peek.
07:53It's so small.
07:54Oh, I can't wait.
07:55And she may serve up another slice of humble pie.
07:58So different.
08:00We'll take different.
08:01Look at this little washroom.
08:03So cool.
08:04See how her tone is optimistic.
08:08This totally reminds me of, like, when my dad had a boat.
08:12Oh, yeah, totally.
08:13Such good use of space.
08:15Mm-hmm.
08:15Wow.
08:16A spiral staircase, a tub, this little nook.
08:19It's so interesting, but I'm not sure.
08:22Like, the function is just...
08:24It's just not there for me.
08:25It can't be for everybody.
08:27Maybe this will give me a little bit of a leg up in the competition.
08:31Okay, well, that was nice.
08:33I think it was realistic.
08:34Yeah.
08:34And I think that it builds for a tight competition.
08:40All right, it's Linda's turn to have her tiny house
08:42put under the microscope.
08:44It was originally a worker's cottage, built in 1870,
08:48so that would make it about 150 years old.
08:51The secret weapon of this house is that it's a cozy, intimate home.
08:56Oh, I hope they like these old fixtures.
08:59My husband and I fell in love with it the moment we walked in the door.
09:03The cut glass, the variety of wood that we have in this house, and it adds a dimension of warmth.
09:10If I'm going to be judged negatively for any part of this house, it's going to be because of the
09:16kitchen,
09:16because it's not updated.
09:18I entered this competition because I felt it would be interesting to share my home with other people.
09:25I hope it wins.
09:27I think it's a great place to be.
09:30Oh, that's cute.
09:32Really cool.
09:33I'm ready.
09:34Let's go.
09:35This is so cute.
09:37You can definitely see how she likes her privacy.
09:40I could see somebody having a nice glass of wine.
09:42Right?
09:42Chaos in the city in front of them, but they're just perfectly happy.
09:45Yep.
09:46Yeah.
09:46That's exactly what I use my front porch for all the time.
09:51Oh.
09:52I love the heritage feeling of the store.
09:55Oh, wow.
09:55Okay.
09:56Wow.
09:57That is all.
09:58Linda.
09:59Surprising.
09:59Yes.
10:01Okay, we come into the office right here.
10:03This is darling.
10:05I think they still have the original windows, too.
10:07Oh, wow.
10:08Really nice.
10:10This whole place is very compact.
10:11There's a lot of functions, but everything is just so outdated, in my opinion.
10:15The house is very old and a little outdated.
10:18There's a closet and drawers.
10:20So she has storage here.
10:22It is very functional, but also, what a staircase.
10:26We've got to try it.
10:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:27We have to go up.
10:28Oh, wow.
10:29Wow.
10:30Watch your head again.
10:31Uh-huh.
10:32This is a very tiny space.
10:35Uh-huh.
10:36With my size, I can...
10:37There's a bed in here?
10:39Who is sleeping up here?
10:41I'm assuming that this has to be a guest room.
10:44But yeah, you're not getting up in the middle of the night to go pee.
10:49Okay, it's the grandkids' room.
10:51That makes a lot more sense.
10:52That explains the height.
10:52My grandchildren, they just love it up there.
10:55Oh, this is so cute.
10:57Well, coming in here, you can definitely see that hardwood.
11:00There's mirrors on the ceiling.
11:02Whoa.
11:03Okay.
11:04That's actually very smart.
11:05That actually makes the place taller.
11:08Uh, I mean, it's getting a little naughty with nautical.
11:11Am I wrong here?
11:11Like, this room has a theme.
11:14When I walk into this room, I get it.
11:17We like boats.
11:19I like boats.
11:20It's quite obvious from that room.
11:22And it speaks to who I am.
11:24I think the function of this space actually works.
11:27You can sit down, have a cup of coffee, do some stuff at the table.
11:32I like the openness of this.
11:34Having a white wall actually makes it a little bit more spacious.
11:37I like the white walls.
11:38It makes the pictures pop.
11:40Wow.
11:40Whoa.
11:41Okay.
11:41There's two tones of color I see here, black and white.
11:44I really don't like that black flooring.
11:47I mean, if she drops a lot of food on the floor, it really,
11:51you can hide out all the dirtiness of it.
11:53Nice try, Kent.
11:55But black tiles as a cleaning hack?
11:57So it'll fail.
11:58Well, Linda also has some mix-matched knobs.
12:01Is it some of them or is it a single?
12:06Oh, it's how she knows where the good stuff is.
12:11Layout-wise, there's a ton of storage.
12:13I like having a prep area, having the stove and oven right behind me.
12:17Boom, boom, boom, double sinks on an angle.
12:20Like, the functionality of this room really works.
12:23The design is where I wish there was more.
12:29Oh, guys.
12:30This is where she's spending all of her time.
12:32This is super Linda.
12:34This is a really well-maintained backyard.
12:37Oh, it makes me laugh to hear people talk about my house.
12:40I just love it.
12:41Even more Linda.
12:41We've got a little stained glass ladybug out here.
12:44There's Linda everywhere in this house.
12:47There's a lot to like and a lot to question about this.
12:49I think just space for me, eh.
12:53Yeah, kitsch goes really far with me.
12:55There's so much in there that I shouldn't like,
12:57but I'm kind of just blind to it because of all the stuff that I do.
13:01It's like, oh, your marble doesn't match.
13:04You have mirrors on your ceiling.
13:05I don't care, right?
13:06Like, I think that it's working in my favour from what I am hearing from the three judges.
13:18My house is a teeny tiny little 750 square foot boho bungalow in the city.
13:24My design, it's like California, chic, modern farmhouse living.
13:29It's a little bit of a bridge of everything.
13:33Oh, flowers make everything better.
13:35From the high ceilings, to the skylight, to the big windows.
13:38It just feels light and bright.
13:40It's small space, but big impression.
13:42You come in and you feel that you just want to sit and stay and hang out.
13:47The piece de resistance is the backyard.
13:51I really want to win this competition because I believe in myself as a designer,
13:57and I've put a lot of love into this house, and I think it really shows.
14:01The judges are here to pry and poke, and we can't promise they won't break your heart.
14:06I think I see a mint door.
14:08I do love a pop of colour.
14:11All right.
14:12Whoa.
14:15Wow.
14:16This is wild.
14:19Aw, thanks.
14:20Can we talk about the kitchen first?
14:22It works, right?
14:23It feels eclectic and has art and looks like it has good space.
14:27And it's all white, but it just pops.
14:31I just love this long counter.
14:33And there's not one, but two.
14:35The workspace here is absolutely phenomenal.
14:37That's right.
14:38And also, looking at the skylight, this kitchen looks a lot brighter, right?
14:42The only thing that I'm thinking is there's not a lot of storage.
14:46This is true.
14:47She's got her dishes out, so those have to get done all the time in order to maintain
14:51how this looks.
14:53Things just being out, they get dirty, they get dusty.
14:57Good design, bad storage, yes.
14:59I think the value you add is absolutely this hardware flooring, going from the kitchen to
15:04a living room, all the way to a dining room.
15:06This place feels sleek, but also eclectic.
15:10And I really think I get who Stacy is.
15:13You say that, but at the same time, I don't know if it's so unique.
15:17I feel like half of the stuff I've already seen on the internet, like looking at that armoire,
15:21I've definitely put that in my cart already.
15:23I just don't know how unique it is, or if she's just following the trends.
15:29Oh, please.
15:29Yes, I'm inspired by things I see online.
15:33Guilty as charged, like.
15:39Having this high ceiling make this around, I would say 800, 900 square feet looks a lot bigger.
15:47Way smaller than that.
15:48Now, this is a painting.
15:50The painting acts like that magical accent wall.
15:54It is a pop of green and pink.
15:56I'm a really big fan of it.
15:57Yeah, what I don't like is because of this space being so open,
16:00sometimes you have dinner with your friends.
16:03You got to clean the dishes immediately, or else everywhere you sit,
16:07it looks like you're going to see that dishes piling up.
16:09Oh, Kent, dishing out another dish?
16:12This seems like a space that you kind of can't get away from anything or anyone.
16:16Still regret opening up the main level.
16:19Bit of a sore point.
16:21Wow.
16:22This doesn't have as much personality as everywhere else.
16:25Light fixture too big?
16:26I think so.
16:27I think it's cool, but there's been so much color everywhere else in this house,
16:32and this is not very colorful.
16:36Although if we look up, there's an accent ceiling.
16:38Yes.
16:39And once you see it, you can't unsee it.
16:42So they've sort of created that little oasis.
16:44I actually don't like it because this is actually making the height lower.
16:49I feel like my bedroom is so serene, and I love that.
16:52Oh, well.
16:53Whoa.
16:55Oh, my God.
16:55Hot tub.
16:56This is a very long backyard.
16:58I think there's like five layouts just looking at from here.
17:01Everything about this backyard is amazing.
17:03I would have parties here all the time.
17:06This is definitely a hosting backyard for sure.
17:09This is definitely beautiful, but besides the really fun painting on the shed,
17:12we're back to white.
17:14Catherine, it's giving me a hard time.
17:16I want to see your backyard, Catherine.
17:18We are all three houses in.
17:21Where are you guys standing?
17:22Every house has said something that I really like and that I really don't like.
17:27So I think I've got a lot to think about.
17:29Now that I've seen all three, I actually don't know where my head stands.
17:34Well, that was hard to watch.
17:37Buckle up, Stacey, because your opponents, Angelo and Jeff, are here for a look-see,
17:41and things might get bumpier.
17:43Whoa.
17:44Oh, cool.
17:45This is awesome.
17:46Yeah, this is great.
17:47The unexpected.
17:47I feel like this is very well balanced with design, space.
17:52This definitely makes me feel the heat right away.
17:55For sure.
17:55Yeah, competition is on.
17:58Okay.
17:59Yeah, I mean, I guess when you walk in, I guess it's a little bit more like
18:01you're walking right into the house, so you can't really hide anything.
18:06This is very true.
18:07You literally can't hide a thing.
18:09You can't really pretend you're not home here.
18:11That's right.
18:12Oh, my God.
18:13Wow, it's huge.
18:15So, yeah, okay, Stacey wins then.
18:16Oh, my gosh.
18:17The backyard wins again.
18:20I think that this size of the deck is probably the size of our place.
18:23Yeah.
18:23You're going down.
18:24It's awesome, yeah.
18:26Yeah.
18:27Not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
18:29I think I definitely have a good chance.
18:31All right, judges.
18:33Design, function, and added value are your metrics.
18:36Time to pick which house is on top of this block.
18:39Okay, no, we have to figure this out.
18:41Can we just, like, hang out for a second and, like, land on this?
18:44Let's start with Jeff and Angelo's house.
18:46Going in, the wow factor is just crazy how there's eight feet wide and everything is there.
18:53And also, the flow of things makes sense.
18:55And added value, that nice, functional kitchen.
18:58But let's not forget those little airport bathrooms.
19:01The least functional part of that house.
19:04And unless you're pole vaulting into that bed, there's no room to enjoy yourself.
19:09I think I became more impressed with it after I left.
19:14What they were able to do with such a small amount of space was, like, really admirable.
19:19Okay, now Linda's house.
19:21I loved Linda's house.
19:22It was so kitschy.
19:23There was a lot of personal elements.
19:26That attic space, it was so fun.
19:29If I was a kid, I would have loved it.
19:30As much as I love the idea of that attic, no chance do I want to come down those stairs.
19:36Being able to stand in one spot and you can do everything in the kitchen.
19:39I think that's very functional.
19:41With a space like that, she doesn't have any dishes out.
19:43Yeah.
19:44Everything is nicely stored.
19:46You know who doesn't have good storage space?
19:49Stacy.
19:50There's so much I like in Stacy's house.
19:52It is beautiful.
19:54It has style.
19:55The flow is good.
19:56And all I can think about are those dishes sitting there.
20:00The open concept, the tall ceiling, the whole flow is just so well done.
20:05I get why you like it so much as a realtor, because it's staging furniture.
20:09It's beautiful.
20:09But it got pulled right out of a magazine and wasn't anything special.
20:15Everything is fun until you go into that bedroom.
20:17That green ceiling doesn't make sense.
20:19I like the green ceiling.
20:20I mean, we've been asking for color in every single house.
20:23And finally, we got some at Stacy's.
20:26Okay.
20:26What do you guys think?
20:27It's a really tough decision.
20:39The decision is in.
20:42I think the judges were both fair and harsh.
20:46We know that our house isn't for everyone.
20:49But we love our house, and that's all that matters.
20:52This is honestly what happens when people come to my house.
20:55They're just walking.
20:56They're like, oh, wow.
20:57This is unexpected.
20:59There are a couple of little twinges of negativity, but that's okay.
21:04Watching the judges go through, it makes you a little nervous.
21:07I found the judges hard on the things I love.
21:12I feel we could win this.
21:14Yeah.
21:16Still feel pretty good.
21:17I think I got this.
21:20I have a pretty good chance to be at the top.
21:32Hi.
21:33Stacy.
21:36Stacy.
21:36You've won.
21:37No way!
21:38Oh, that's so exciting.
21:41I feel amazing.
21:43I'm so excited.
21:44All that hard work paid off, and my intention really shone through.
21:49We toured three small houses, and yours had the biggest personality, and it was our clear winner.
21:55Thank you so much.
21:56This one's like a labor of love, this little house.
22:00And to have other people respond this way really warms my heart.
22:03So yay!
22:04Stacy's design aesthetic, the use of color, the use of flow, all of those things really,
22:09really work.
22:10A little disappointed, but you know, that's life.
22:13You win some, you lose some.
22:14It would have been nice to win, and it would have been cool to add to our street cred on
22:19this house.
22:19It's so different.
22:20Which is what makes me so proud of this space.
22:24I'm top of the block, everybody!
22:27Woo-woo!
22:28Woo-woo!
