00:00I gotta tell you, this is as good as I think anybody's gonna feel after a 4-3 start in
00:04my entire life.

00:11was just gonna be a fly ball.
00:13Ended up carrying and carrying and carrying and carrying it out. Good morning. Spencer German, in for Tone. Hello.
00:19Morning, Ken. How are you? I'm doing great. I'm as excited as I think I'm ever gonna be after seven
00:24games.
00:24I mean, a lot of it's about who they played, right? You open the season on the road. Seattle, one
00:29of the best teams in the AL. The Dodgers, the best team in baseball, defending champs.
00:32What was the year? I was a kid. You were not, like, probably born yet. They started off, like, 11
00:38-1. They started off with a West Coast trip. This has gotta be, like, 2001, 2002, somewhere in there.
00:42They started off with a West Coast—no, because it was after 2001, because that was, like, the last gasp of
00:47that era of Indians baseball.
00:51So, they started off, like, 11-1, and then, like, 15-2, and things just hit the skids. And everybody
00:58was excited then.
00:59And I'm like, 4-3, you're playing the defending world champions, the defending back-to-back world champions.
01:05You're playing another division winner in the Seattle Mariners, and you go 4-3 on the road trip. You got
01:10the split, then you get the series win.
01:12I'm about as happy as anybody can be right now. I'm about as happy as anybody can be.
01:17This is a great feeling. Coming back to Cleveland. Take it on the Cubs tomorrow. Opening day. Open—yes, underline opening
01:25day, because it's our opening day.
01:26Don't give a damn. Whatever. I'm gonna call it opening day here, and I'm gonna call it opening day on
01:31Fox 8.
01:31Don't give a damn. I don't care. Send all your corrections all you want. Guardians are 4-3. It's a
01:36great start to the season.
01:37I agree. Listen, we all know the score with baseball. It's 162 games.
01:42Well, I'm glad somebody said it.
01:43There's gonna be ebbs and flows to it emotionally. There's gonna be moments. Last year, what, in June, they went
01:49on the hot streak and sort of turned their season around?
01:53Like, of course, that's gonna happen.
01:54That was later. Owen knows. Owen knows the all-star break.
01:57Was it June when they actually had the win streak?
01:59No.
02:00June was when they struggled, and then they had the win streak.
02:02Spencer, you're like—he is like the one guy in Cleveland media.
02:05Spencer, I'm not concerned with the ebbs and flows. I'm concerned with the Jimmys and Joes.
02:09And Gavin Williams looks like the guy that—Tanter Bybee can be the number one start—the opening day starter guy.
02:16That's fine. He probably has earned that and deserves it.
02:19But, dude, Gavin Williams is like the ace.
02:21Like—
02:21He was awesome last night.
02:22And it's—he's been awesome for—since that win streak stuff started.
02:28I mean, Gavin Williams has consistently come out.
02:30He had 10 strikeouts last night.
02:32He was throwing in—he was throwing 95 in the, you know, sixth inning last night.
02:35Well, how many do you walk against Seattle?
02:37Was it six or five?
02:38And I know the weather was different.
02:39I know the weather was different.
02:40Okay?
02:41I understand.
02:42I'm king of saying the weather and all that other crap, which is obvious.
02:46I'm king of the obvious.
02:49God, I think you're right.
02:51I think he's—
02:52I think he's the real number one.
02:53He's the guy I feel most confident that I'm like, hey, we need to win today.
02:57Put Gavin Williams out there.
02:58Now, is it too early for Messick?
03:00Too early to say Messick?
03:01Yeah, I'm going to say that.
03:01He's a rookie.
03:02I know, but I love that kid.
03:04He gave a great interview yesterday.
03:06Oh, man.
03:06His interview was great.
03:07Yes, he did.
03:08You saw that, too?
03:09Yeah, but—oh, I stayed up for the whole—you give me an 8 o'clock start after it's been
03:1310-10 for six games?
03:16Yeah.
03:17I'm staying up for the whole thing.
03:18I was like, 8-20, a reasonable start?
03:20My God.
03:21The only other one we had was Sunday Night Baseball, and it was horrible for the Guardians.
03:24They played horribly in it.
03:26It was, you know, a getaway, essentially.
03:28Yeah.
03:29Yeah, that was—if you didn't stay up for it, you missed something last night.
03:32It was a great game.
03:33So, he walked—when he walked Otani to start things off, I'd go, okay, we're going to have
03:38more of this stuff.
03:39And I just was like, all right, let's labor through it.
03:42They're kind of—maybe they're all slow starters.
03:44I didn't see him striking out 10 on the night and going 7.
03:46Like, that was—that was outstanding.
03:49That was outstanding.
03:50He had a great defense behind him.
03:51Arias played great defense.
03:53You already said it.
03:54Arias got that one up in the air.
03:56Ended up lofting out in center field.
03:58Well, like, he is—I'm glad you brought him up.
04:01Because he is probably the most hot and cold player that I've seen in years.
04:07You know he's going to hit that wall at some point.
04:09And it's going to go down, and he'll get back.
04:11And I just hope it isn't those first two or three games against the Cubs.
04:15Because people are going to kill him for it, and he probably will deserve it.
04:19But he's going to get cold at some point.
04:21Yes, and he tries to do the challenge.
04:23And there's like two guys right now I trust to do a challenge.
04:27Stephen Kwan, even though he's lost him.
04:29Yeah.
04:29And Jose, obviously Jose.
04:31Jose's number one.
04:32And those seem to be—
04:49He's going to be—
04:50He's going to be—
04:51He's going to be—
04:54He's going to be—
04:55He's going to be—
04:55He's going to be—
04:56He's going to be—
04:57He's going to be—
04:59He's going to be—
05:00He's going to be—
05:00He's going to be—
05:02He's going to be—
05:04He's going to be—
05:06He's going to be—
05:08He's going to be—
05:09He's going to be—
05:10He's going to be—
20:44I don't know.
21:27you were mad at us but we're here again we're right back i get it people want more and they
21:31need to spend more money but i think you go through a whole season with the guardians every
21:35year and it's like oh well we're gonna always end up in the same place pretty much so do we
21:39really have it that bad all things considered and with the other teams there's just i think the
21:44emotions thing with the cash is very spot on we don't know how to feel because if it doesn't go
21:48well this year donovan mitchell could be on the outs and what does that mean the browns obviously
21:52still trying to find a quarterback it took the big swing with the sean that didn't work out so
21:56there's there's less emotion i think when it comes to the guardians it's always the same thing with
22:00the guardians it's you didn't spend enough money and then we get to october we're like yeah it's not
22:04as bad as we maybe thought here but yes at some point you hope to correct that but i don't
22:08i don't
22:08think it has to be i to to to again relate to the conversation i think that's largely why we
22:14can feel
22:14better about this team than the other team we're also thinking about a lot of things there's been
22:17a lot of things that have just exhausted us with the bronze okay and it feels like there's a lot
22:21of
22:21things coming to the end every year we're talking about miles possibly being traded now there's a lot
22:25of things that are just seemingly quote unquote coming to an end if the calves lose before they're
22:30supposed to lose like if it's a first round exit like yeah people are gonna be losing their minds
22:34and then we're talking about donovan mitchell's future it's just like what you said with the
22:38guardians there's a lot of things of what's the promise to come because you can be as mad as you
22:42want that they're not in on guys that they never would have been in on the first place because they're
22:46gonna i mean when you got one soto two years ago getting 735 million dollars you're just not
22:51gonna be in that conversation it's just not gonna happen and i can be as mad as i want that
22:55they're not realistically in any of these conversations or i can say well i i got chased
22:59a lotter coming up here looking good i'm excited about travis bazana i'm excited about george valera
23:04once the calf is fine and i know he's down at triple a right now i'll be excited about that
23:07like i'm
23:08excited about what's to come i'm excited about the possibility even though i i'm a guy who says keep
23:13him at arm's length because i owners are not meant to be liked yeah there's a lot of people going
23:17hey
23:18when this david blitzer guy takes over there's a possibility he's going to make a splash you and
23:22we've all admitted he's going to make a splash move that's something to get excited about you and i
23:26have all are very much in agreement on this guy i know you were talking about it last week a
23:30little
23:30bit because i think i think it was nick that was talking about or tweeting about like it can't
23:34happen soon enough that they they pass the team over to blitzer and i'm kind of like we sure about
23:38that like what what happened to what happened to the injection of money that he was going to bring
23:43into the into the equation when he signed on like i don't do we know for sure that he's going
23:47to run
23:47the team any differently he's he's a hedge fund guy or whatever he's not coming in he's trying to
23:51run like a business the only thing i've heard the only thing i heard i'll say this quick to stick
23:55up
23:55for nick a little bit record this because i never do we always throw each other under the bus every
23:58chance we get he drills on nick every day except the day that i'm here everything i everything i've
24:03heard about blitzer is that he'll run it the same way it's being run as long as it's running like
24:08a
24:09business like he's not going to come in and start getting his hands on things and doing crazy
24:13things and stuff like that also doesn't mean he's going to spend a lot more money either i think that's
24:16what people think but if you are able to get what you want out of the players union conversation
24:21coming up here this winter that's the big then maybe that changes and maybe he's looked at in
24:25a totally different light because of that there's a lot of things though that i think give cleveland
24:29fans a lot of hope with the guardians where there's a lot of scary uncertainty with the other two i
24:34have
24:34to admit the the guardians have mastered by the way like selling hope to the fans but the difference is
24:40generally it pays off in some way shape or form like it's like we're still making the playoffs
24:44with this young group of guys the browns try to sell hope but it just never quite gets there
24:48and that's why i think the the point is sound on you that they're probably like the palate cleanser
