00:00What makes a house a home?
00:04Homes full of style and character
00:05are competing for the title of
00:07Home of the Year.
00:09Making the tough decisions are
00:11design legend Hugh Wallace.
00:14This kitchen is the three F's.
00:16Functional, fun
00:17and fantastic.
00:19Award winning architect Amanda Bone.
00:21When I walk in here
00:23what I see is overly traditional.
00:26It's too much, there's just
00:27too much.
00:28And award winning design consultant
00:30Siobhan Lahm.
00:32I'm lost for words Amanda.
00:34I have no idea what you're talking about.
00:36And this year it's not just their scores
00:38that they'll have to decide.
00:40After the episode's winner has been revealed
00:42we will get the chance to use our golden
00:45key for one of the runners up.
00:46Oh, it's so exciting.
00:51The search continues
00:53for Ireland's Home of the Year.
01:00After living and building in Australia
01:02Christine and Mark developed
01:04this contemporary home in Wicklow.
01:07The original thought process
01:09was inspired by Australian architecture.
01:11We really like the style
01:12of some of the more modern houses over there.
01:15The overhang is great
01:16because the temperature doesn't fluctuate
01:18in the house.
01:18It stays consistent
01:19whether it's really hot outside
01:20or it's lashing rain and wintry.
01:22You can use the outside space
01:24even when it's raining in Ireland
01:26and that's a lot.
01:27I think the permanent elements
01:28of the house
01:29have a relatively consistent
01:32colour palette
01:33in terms of black, white, gold
01:34and then it's layered
01:36down on top of that
01:37with pink cabinets
01:38or purple cabinets
01:40or whatever.
01:41I think a bathroom
01:41you can totally
01:42put some personality in there.
01:44It's a small space
01:45and you know
01:45people love it.
01:46They come out of there
01:47going oh my god
01:47your bathroom is amazing
01:48and you know
01:49I love hearing that
01:50and it makes me feel good
01:52every time I go in there
01:53so really
01:53it's just for me.
01:56This is my favourite spot
01:58in the house
01:58sitting here
01:59at this kitchen stool.
02:00It's where we come together
02:01as a family
02:02every meal time
02:03and the kids come
02:04and share their stories
02:05during the day
02:06and I can come
02:06have my coffee
02:08look down in the morning
02:09at the sea
02:09and see whether
02:10it's a swim day or not.
02:11Our home is
02:13a busy home
02:14you know
02:14and that's what
02:15we built the home for
02:16to have people around us
02:18to have family around us
02:19and to share it with them
02:21so yeah
02:22I'm really proud of it
02:22because we do
02:23and it has worked out
02:24that way
02:25so yeah
02:26I'm happy.
02:27The judges
02:28must now assess the home
02:29armed with only
02:30the basic facts
02:31about the property
02:32and its owners.
02:34Well this new build home
02:35is definitely making
02:36a statement
02:36on the exterior.
02:38One of my favourite moves
02:39is an overhang
02:40and on a day like today
02:41you can really appreciate it.
02:43Just perfect.
02:45Wow
02:46look at that staircase.
02:50Well the overhang
02:52was a good start
02:52and we walked
02:54into a great
02:55entrance hall.
02:56It's spacious
02:57it's bright
02:58and the materials
02:59and the colour tones
03:01they work with
03:02what we saw
03:02on the outside.
03:03Entering this hall
03:05that staircase
03:06is just fantastic.
03:08The detail
03:09the way
03:10that you can't see
03:11how the glass
03:13is held on.
03:14Let's have a look
03:15in here.
03:16Oh so it's a gorgeous
03:17little playroom.
03:19Now
03:22the magnificent
03:24downstairs bathroom
03:25it's just wonderful.
03:27To me this is what
03:28a downstairs guest bathroom
03:29is all about.
03:30Fun.
03:32Conversation piece.
03:33I don't understand it
03:34and personally
03:36I don't want to look at it.
03:37I actually just want
03:38to stand here
03:39and appreciate
03:40all the great design moves
03:42in this entrance hallway.
03:50Look at the height
03:52of those windows.
03:54What a fantastic
03:56scale and size
03:58of the island years
03:59and we have
04:00the homeowner's
04:01favourite spot.
04:03You know
04:04sitting here
04:05is just wonderful.
04:06I've got this view
04:07out through
04:08that elongated window
04:10which is the same height
04:11as the counter
04:12so it's like
04:13looking out
04:14into the canopy
04:15of the trees.
04:16Okay I want to see
04:17what you're seeing.
04:18Okay that's brilliant.
04:20I mean look at the layout
04:20of the kitchen.
04:21Everything's in
04:22the right place.
04:23It's so spacious
04:25that that beautiful floor
04:26has continued throughout.
04:27I think the colour tones
04:28are great.
04:29Siobhan you have
04:30to come over here.
04:31I gotta see what you're talking about.
04:32You have to look at this.
04:33Oh that is
04:34Isn't that great?
04:34That is stunning.
04:35I mean of course
04:36this is a favourite spot.
04:37You've got that view
04:38and I think another reason
04:40this might be the favourite spot
04:41is this is a family home.
04:43This is the heart
04:44of the home,
04:44the kitchen
04:45but also you have
04:46the dining room here
04:47the back garden here
04:48so I'm sure the kids
04:49are running around.
04:51It's also a spot
04:52where you could just
04:53pause and rest.
04:58Now.
04:59Now look at this.
05:03So from where I'm standing
05:04the kitchen and dining
05:05it looks slick
05:06it's monochromatic
05:07we've got our beautiful marble
05:09we've got our black
05:10handleless cabinets
05:11and then I turn
05:13it just feels
05:15completely at odds
05:17with this kitchen dining.
05:19Oh I don't agree
05:20when you look at the
05:21little bathroom
05:22we were in
05:23those fabulous wallpapers
05:24and if you like
05:25they've been translated
05:26in here
05:27in terms of
05:28the cushions
05:29the blush pink
05:30the flowers
05:31my only comment
05:33is when I get here
05:34is I have downlights
05:37in the kitchen dining area
05:39and I have four downlights
05:41here and one lamp
05:42and there's no dimmer switches.
05:45Standing here
05:46I'm really enjoying this home
05:47because what I can see
05:49is I can see
05:49right through the hall
05:50and out to the front
05:51of the garden
05:52and also when I'm looking
05:53at the kitchen
05:54that very much
05:55is the same statement
05:56as we witnessed
05:57on the front of the home
05:58but when I turn here
06:00it's something
06:00completely different
06:01it's jarring
06:02and I think
06:03if the homeowners
06:03wanted to do that
06:04they should have done it
06:05in a room
06:06which was separate
06:06to the open plan.
06:07I agree.
06:17Whoa
06:17look at that view
06:21this is a beautiful
06:23restful room
06:24it's quite serene
06:25I think that's down
06:26into that moss green colour
06:27on the walls
06:28but also this view
06:29it's incredible
06:30it's like we're in the trees
06:32I think in terms of textures
06:34these homeowners have done
06:35layering so so well
06:37in this bedroom
06:38it feels restful
06:39but sumptuous
06:40it's really nicely balanced
06:42I'd say.
06:43I have to take my shoes off
06:44the softness of this carpet
06:46it is beautiful underfoot
06:48and it's the contrast
06:50between this
06:51and the polished concrete
06:53floor downstairs
06:54and it makes sense
06:55because this is a bedroom
06:56this is about tranquility
06:57it's about escapism
06:58it's about relaxing
07:00I think what the homeowner
07:01has done here
07:02is they have created
07:03that atmosphere.
07:04For me I think
07:05this is an exceptional
07:06main bedroom
07:07sheer luxury.
07:12The home will now
07:13be marked out of ten
07:14one score will be held back
07:15until the judges
07:16have seen all three homes
07:17when their combined scores
07:19will be revealed.
07:20These homeowners
07:21have created
07:22a spacious contemporary home
07:23the kitchen is a great example
07:25of the homeowner's
07:26modern design sensibility
07:27yet within the same space
07:29we also have more traditional
07:30heavy pieces of furniture
07:32multiple floral displays
07:33and a switch to a summer
07:35cottage colour palette
07:36I give this home
07:37an eight
07:40The homeowners show confidence
07:42in creating a modern home
07:44full of style
07:45this is an inspirational
07:47delightful
07:48and fun filled
07:49family home
07:50and I'm giving it
07:52a nine
07:54From the outside
07:55this home
07:56makes a strong statement
07:58inside
07:58it's generous
08:00light filled
08:01and well laid out
08:04When taking on
08:05this self-built
08:06modern home
08:07in Clare
08:07Kelly and Fiacro
08:09wanted to create
08:10something truly unique
08:11while maximising
08:12the beautiful
08:13surrounding landscape
08:14I see a lot of
08:15L-shaped bungalows
08:17and I just wanted
08:17something a bit different
08:18and this allowed us
08:20then to maybe
08:21kind of have the
08:21house separated
08:22into two wings
08:23if you like
08:24so we have the main
08:25bedroom in one wing
08:26and then we have
08:27the everyday kitchen
08:28living and dining
08:29in the other wing
08:31I think the interior
08:32of this home
08:33is minimalist
08:34You have the
08:35kind of say
08:36wow outside
08:37so we didn't really
08:38want to do
08:40anything major
08:40inside
08:41it is be
08:42catching your eye
08:43too much
08:43or you know
08:44it's just
08:44neutral calm
08:45and relaxing
08:46This is my
08:47favourite spot
08:48in the home
08:49I have a view
08:50here on the left
08:51out the window
08:52and also straight
08:53ahead in the big
08:54sliding doors
08:54and just absolute
08:56relaxation
08:56to sit down here
08:57in the evenings
08:58watching telly
08:59in front of the fire
08:59very proud of the
09:01home
09:01yes
09:02it's our dream
09:03home I think
09:03we finally got
09:04there in the end
09:05so we're making
09:06no more changes
09:10Wow
09:12great piece of
09:13modern contemporary
09:14architecture
09:15in the shape
09:16of a U
09:17but I particularly
09:18like the timber
09:18cladding on both
09:20gables
09:20When we were
09:21walking up to
09:22this home
09:22it was just
09:22wild beautiful
09:24Irish landscape
09:24so I'm just
09:25struck by
09:27you know
09:27the modernity
09:28of this home
09:28and I hope
09:29the restraint
09:30shown on the
09:30exterior
09:31follows through
09:32to the interior
09:33Shall we go in?
09:35Let's
09:40Oh my
09:42This is enormous
09:44It's like a gallery
09:46For me there's a
09:47sense of freedom
09:48and a sense of
09:49spaciousness
09:49which makes sense
09:50with what's
09:51outside the door
09:51that expansive
09:53horizontality
09:54of the landscape
09:54in terms of
09:55the colour
09:56tones
09:56the white walls
09:57the pale
09:58coloured timber
09:58floor
09:58they align
09:59with that
10:00restraint
10:01that we saw
10:01on the outside
10:05Well look
10:06at this
10:08very white
10:09streamlined
10:10modern
10:11kitchen
10:12What I really
10:13like is a mirror
10:14in a kitchen
10:15because it just
10:16reflects the light
10:17and it also
10:18reflects funny enough
10:19the views to the
10:20outside
10:20but when I look
10:21at the kitchen
10:22here
10:23thank goodness
10:24you're in it
10:25Siobhan
10:26because
10:27this kitchen
10:29needs a little
10:30punch of colour
10:30The layout works
10:32and in fact
10:33that is a beautiful
10:34dining table
10:35For me it's
10:36definitely
10:37safe
10:38This
10:40needs
10:42colour
10:42It needs
10:43some texture
10:44It needs some depth
10:46I'm really enjoying
10:47this home
10:47because it's so
10:48spacious
10:49I find it
10:50uplifting
10:50because there's
10:51so much light
10:51coming in
10:52I have great
10:53views and
10:54connection to the
10:55outside
10:55They're not
10:56playing it safe
10:57I think they're
10:58trying to play
10:59it subtle
10:59and I think
11:00their focus
11:01is out there
11:03Let's go
11:04into the living room
11:07Isn't this great
11:08you step down
11:09I love it
11:11And look
11:12favourite spot
11:14Oh
11:15Sitting here
11:16is wonderful
11:17I mean look
11:18at the extensive
11:19views
11:20and the layering
11:21of the different
11:21colours
11:22and textures
11:23and plants
11:24and trees
11:24and mountains
11:25It looks like
11:26it goes on
11:27forever
11:27It makes so much
11:29sense that that's
11:29the favourite spot
11:30You've got
11:30your cosy fire
11:32here
11:32Stepping down
11:34into this room
11:35is a great move
11:36because it creates
11:37a much higher
11:38floor to ceiling height
11:39and they've used
11:40that to put in
11:41that trough light
11:42all the way around
11:43I love trough lights
11:44in living rooms
11:45so at night time
11:46this must be
11:47a little cocoon
11:48of calm
11:58What do we have here?
12:00Oh it's a boot room
12:01Oh it's so spacious
12:04What I love
12:06is the black
12:06It's so good
12:07to have some contrast
12:08in this home
12:09and there's so much storage
12:11So I mean
12:11who wouldn't want
12:12a boot room like this
12:13It's practical
12:14it's functional
12:15and there's lots
12:16of lovely natural light
12:17It's a great location
12:18because this is
12:19the back door
12:20so you can come in here
12:21take your muddy clothes off
12:23and off you go
12:24through the rest of the house
12:25The joy of the
12:26continuous floor finish
12:28These homeowners
12:28have shown
12:29you need not be afraid
12:30of continuing
12:31a timber floor
12:32into a wet area
12:32Then in the kitchen
12:33and now into the boot room
12:34It's actually
12:35a really brilliant
12:37vinyl tile
12:38Is it?
12:38Yeah
12:39And you just would not know
12:41that it's not timber
12:42They are just terrific
12:51Now
12:51wow
12:55A huge
12:56main bedroom
12:59So the little bit
13:00of colour
13:00has now been introduced
13:01and I have
13:03that fantastic bed
13:05Love the wall
13:06sconces on the wall
13:07and look at the size
13:08of the headboards
13:09Isn't that great?
13:11This is what
13:11I was expecting
13:12in the living room
13:14and dining room
13:14a little bit more
13:16adventure in the colour
13:17but like
13:18very subtle
13:20Well
13:20it's certainly
13:21a great big main bedroom
13:23and the bed suits
13:24the scale of the room
13:24and it's in the right location
13:26I've had a problem
13:27with the style
13:28of the lighting
13:28throughout this home
13:30because of the overall
13:31sense of restraints
13:32we experienced
13:33outside and in
13:34whereas I find
13:35the style of the lighting
13:36takes away from that
13:38The homeowners
13:38have got a lot right
13:40It's layered
13:41It's more comfortable
13:42but then there's
13:43certain things
13:43that are missing
13:44The functionality
13:45of the room
13:46is lacking
13:46Like bedside cabinets
13:48are incredibly important
13:50It doesn't seem like
13:51they're that important
13:51but they really are
13:52because otherwise
13:52you're just hopping
13:53into bed
13:54and where
13:54where are all your
13:56beds going?
13:56Where'd you put
13:57your dentures?
13:59This home
14:00has design features
14:02that you look for
14:03and that belong
14:04in a new built home
14:05such as contemporary
14:06detailed joinery
14:07and a continuous floor finish
14:08I'm giving this home
14:10an 8
14:12I was very impressed
14:14with the simplicity
14:15of the exterior
14:16For me
14:17a few more colours
14:18would have elevated
14:20this great family home
14:21even further
14:22I'm giving this home
14:23a 7
14:26This new build
14:27is spacious
14:28minimal
14:28and has a lovely
14:29connection
14:30to the surrounding landscape
14:34Oh, goodness, goodness
14:36Look at that wallpaper
14:41In County Down
14:43Tara has lovingly
14:45restored this
14:45former gate lodge
14:46with a blend
14:47of contemporary furnishings
14:48and unique patterns
14:49while respecting
14:51the heritage
14:52of the building
14:52I love sort of
14:54old historic buildings
14:55and my sort of style
14:57very colourful
14:58and bright
14:58and I love that
14:59sort of cottage style
15:00when people sort of
15:01renovate something
15:02and make it fun again
15:03and give it another life
15:04I think this home
15:05it sort of plays into
15:06that inner child feeling
15:08because a lot of features
15:09for example
15:09in my bedroom
15:10I've got like
15:11draped princess style bedding
15:13and that's what I had
15:14as a child
15:14and that's like
15:15a lovely memory
15:16that sticks out to me
15:17and it's nice to do that
15:19as an adult
15:19make those sort of dreams
15:21a reality
15:21This is my favourite spot
15:24I think it's just so relaxing
15:25because as the
15:26crittle windows are so large
15:28you just look out
15:28to the garden
15:29and it's just such a
15:30soothing, calm
15:31sort of atmosphere
15:32I'm a little bit nervous
15:33with the judges coming in
15:35because it's very bold
15:36and very out there
15:37but I'm hoping they'll like it
15:42This is a picture
15:44perfect postcard
15:46to me it looks like
15:47gingerbread
15:48and you just want to go up
15:49and start eating it
15:51It's magical
15:52so charming
15:53and we're only on the outside
15:54so I cannot wait
15:55to get inside
15:56and see what's going on
15:57well let's go see
16:03Oh my goodness
16:05it is a storybook
16:08this is gorgeous
16:10there's so much going on
16:13but it's completely cohesive
16:15it's creating
16:16this wonderful story
16:18I am absolutely enamoured
16:21they've thought about
16:23the design of the kitchen
16:24in terms of it being
16:26sort of a reflection
16:27of the past
16:28particularly
16:29the unit on the wall
16:31which is a bit like a dresser
16:32you can see the plates here
16:33when I walk in here
16:35what I see is
16:37overly traditional
16:38which is very heavy handed
16:40the stripes are too much
16:41the detail on the edge
16:43the gallery walls
16:44it's too much
16:46there's just too much
16:47I'm lost for words
16:49Amanda
16:49I have no idea
16:51what you're talking about
16:52it is full of personality
16:53the palette is divine
16:55without being too heavy
16:57and how very dare you
16:59with these stripes
16:59these are utterly delicious
17:01and they
17:02I just
17:03I can't believe
17:04that you have an issue
17:05with these stripes
17:05they are stunning
17:06this kitchen is the three F's
17:09functional
17:10fun
17:10and fantastic
17:12absolutely Hugh
17:18wow
17:19the main bedroom
17:20look at this
17:21oh
17:22and there's a bath
17:23look at the bath
17:24in the bedroom
17:25how wild
17:26look at that arched door
17:27with the colours in here
17:29are great
17:30there's a consistency
17:31but really refined
17:33isn't it wonderful
17:34to have
17:34a freestanding bath
17:36in your bedroom
17:36the materials
17:38the patterns
17:39the colours
17:39that they are bringing together
17:41are not your usual pairings
17:43and
17:44I don't know
17:45they're elevating
17:45they're making this room
17:46utterly divine
17:48this is the reason
17:49I do Home of the Year
17:50for homes like this
17:51it is so exhilarating
17:53I am so excited
17:54I love it
17:55love it
17:56why is this room
17:57so successful
17:58whereas I didn't feel
17:59the kitchen was as much
18:00but I think it's because
18:02of the position
18:02of the bed
18:03which has been centred
18:04on that window
18:05and you get a beautiful view
18:07of the garden
18:08it's a beautiful room
18:10yeah it's like a lesson
18:11in how you can use
18:13different fabrics
18:14and materials
18:15which shouldn't work
18:16but do
18:18isn't this just magic
18:20it's like walking
18:22in to a candy bar
18:24I just think
18:25the connection of colours
18:27between the bathroom
18:28and the main bedroom
18:31is terrific
18:32I'm just utterly enchanted
18:34but they're using combinations
18:36again
18:36that are unusual
18:38they shouldn't work
18:39but they absolutely do
18:41in a room of this scale
18:44there's just too many things
18:45going on
18:46every time
18:46the homeowner
18:47just goes too far
18:48I mean look at the tassels
18:49on the Roman blind
18:51in the window
18:51I get it
18:52I see what you're interested in
18:53but just pull it back
18:54a little bit
18:55you pulled it back
18:57it would be boring
18:58and it would be the same
19:00as every other en suite
19:01you don't need colours
19:02and patterns and bits
19:03to make something interesting
19:05you actually do
19:05you don't
19:06can you understand something
19:07that's not overly patterned
19:09overly dense
19:09absolutely
19:10and there's beauty
19:11in that as well
19:12but what I'm saying is
19:13this room is utterly beautiful
19:15it's these details
19:17that add a playfulness
19:18that add personality
19:19to this home
19:20I disagree with you
19:21for me it's way too much
19:23I disagree with you
19:28it's too much
19:28oh
19:31this is
19:33absolutely exquisite
19:34yet the candy theme continues
19:36I just love it
19:37beautiful detailing
19:39and the most gorgeous
19:40combination of patterns
19:42that I've seen so far
19:43it's like stepping into
19:45Alice in Wonderland
19:46or a sweet shop
19:47but similar
19:49to the shower room
19:51off the bedroom
19:51it's too much
19:53for a space of this scale
19:55I don't agree Amanda
19:56funnily enough
19:56I think this
19:58homeowner
19:59it's about
19:59a fantasy
20:00or a dream world
20:01this home
20:02has all of those elements
20:10oh goodness goodness
20:11look at that wallpaper
20:15oh
20:15the favourite spot
20:17oh my god
20:19look at those
20:19cradle doors
20:20in that green
20:22oh my god
20:22this house
20:23is my dream
20:24could you imagine
20:25this room
20:25in winter
20:26with the fire on
20:28and the combination
20:29of materials
20:31is gorgeous
20:32I'm in interiors
20:34heaven
20:34you know
20:35for me
20:35this is one
20:36of the bravest homes
20:37that's really pushed
20:39the creativity
20:40and design
20:42expression
20:43out
20:44that I've ever seen
20:45in the home of the year
20:46you know
20:46this homeowner
20:47they have a great eye
20:49for detail
20:49like that's an amazing
20:51wallpaper
20:51that wallpaper
20:53should be my next shirt
20:54this is lovely
20:56when we came into
20:57the living room
20:59I'm lost for words
21:01you know
21:01as I walk through
21:02the home
21:03I understand
21:04the homeowner
21:05and their interests
21:05and their passions
21:06and their creativity
21:08and I respect that
21:09but sometimes
21:10you can go too far
21:12but all of this
21:13it's like the grand finale
21:14if this is the finale
21:15I want an encore
21:22as a judge
21:23on home of the year
21:23this is exactly
21:25what I've been looking for
21:26it's bold
21:27it's brave
21:28it's sophisticated
21:29it's utterly original
21:30I am obsessed
21:32with this home
21:33it's a 10 for me
21:36the homeowner's bold
21:37maximus style
21:38is immediately apparent
21:40and intensifies
21:41as you move through the home
21:42there's no doubt though
21:43that this is a highly
21:45imaginable personal space
21:47filled with the
21:48homeowner's creativity
21:49but it's all too much
21:50for me
21:51I'm giving this home
21:52a 7
21:55the outside of this home
21:57was magical
21:58but walking inside
21:59the magic continued
22:00and just got better
22:01and better
22:05now that the judges
22:06have visited
22:06all three homes
22:07it's time to see
22:08how they measure up
22:09against each other
22:10first
22:11Amanda reveals her score
22:12for the home in Wicklow
22:14outside
22:15there's no doubting
22:16this home is making
22:17a strong statement
22:19do you remember
22:19standing in that kitchen
22:21instead of a splashback
22:22there was a window
22:22and you could see
22:23right out to the seat
22:24the style and finishes
22:25of the living area
22:26to me felt like
22:27a different home
22:27I gave this home
22:28an 8
22:292 8s
22:30and a 9
22:3125
22:32next

22:34for the new built home
22:36in Clare
22:36so this is a new build
22:38modern home
22:39incredibly spacious
22:40very minimal
22:41too minimal
22:42I would argue
22:43there was a lack
22:44of tactility
22:46texture
22:47and there was a
22:47serious lack
22:48of colour
22:49I gave this home
22:50a 7
22:50oh well
22:51I expected that
22:52because
22:52golly gosh
22:53there was no colour
22:55a 7
22:56a 7

23:14I was smitten by it
23:15and I gave it
23:16a 10
