Iran has unveiled a secret underground airbase capable of sheltering fighter jets and other aircraft deep beneath the mountains. The subterranean facility — codenamed Oghab 44, also known as Eagle 44 — was first publicly revealed in February 2023, and serves as a protected hub for Iran’s air force, designed to withstand enemy strikes and keep jets ready for operations.

Built deep into the mountainous terrain of Hormozgan Province near the Strait of Hormuz, Oghab 44 includes command posts, hangars, repair facilities, fuel storage, and more. It can house a variety of aircraft, including fighter jets, bombers, and unmanned aerial vehicles, positioning Iran’s air power in a strategic protected space.

State media footage shows jets — including vintage F‑4 Phantom II fighters — inside the tunnels, ready to emerge when needed. The base enhances Tehran’s defense capabilities, enabling it to protect key air assets and prepare for long‑range missions while minimizing vulnerability to airstrikes.

As tensions between Iran, the U.S., and other regional powers continue, the Oghab 44 underground base underscores Tehran’s focus on resilience, deterrence, and strategic depth.
