The Beatitudes are a critical part of Jesus' teachings, kicking off the seminal "Sermon on the Mount" in Matthew chapters 5,6,7. Those seeking to follow in Jesus' footsteps often seek to achieve the "Beatific vision" - the true blessings of God that often do not look like blessings in a conventional earthly sense.

@TheChosenSeries does such a wonderful job helping to give a different way of entering into the Scriptures that many have found helpful and transformative for their prayer lives, taking what was a few verses in Scripture and adding (plausible) narrative flair in order to present these stories in way that is relatable and memorable.

These scenes are from The Chosen Season 2, episodes 8, highlighting the the way (in this depiction) that Jesus helps Matthew to understand his sermon and the Beatitudes. May it bring you faith and joy to you today, I pray.

00:07Matthew, look.
00:15Mary finished the notices.
00:17They're leaving to spread the word.
00:22I hope they can find a way to work together.
00:25What do you mean?
00:26They can't seem to agree on a single thing lately.
00:30Myself included sometimes.
00:32Oh, I've noticed.
00:36In some ways, it's to be expected.
00:39But not desired, surely.
00:40No, no.
00:43But it's what's bound to happen when you start something that's open to all, truly, all people.
00:50Zealots, even tax collectors.
00:55People who have been through tough times.
00:57People both hesitant and skeptical, as well as bold and confident.
01:04People hungry to learn, as well as those learned and knowledgeable.
01:08People, let's get back to work.
01:15How many sections are we up to?
01:18Nineteen.
01:20Here's a little incomplete, huh?
01:23There is something about twenty that is more symmetrical.
01:25You could always shorten it to eighteen.
01:28Brevity is usually preferred.
01:31Which section stands out to you the most?
01:34Do not be anxious about your life, of course.
01:37Are there any sections that concern you?
01:41Give me your honest opinion.
01:43I know I don't have to say that, but...
01:46The whole truth.
01:47You know I won't be offended.
01:50It's...
01:52Well...
01:53Very striking.
01:55But...
01:56If I do the math, in terms of good news and bad, it seems like there's not a lot of
02:00good news.
02:04Anyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery.
02:09Doesn't that make everyone an adulterer?
02:12If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out.
02:17Wouldn't that lead to an entire population of people walking around with only one eye?
02:21Oh, and this one.
02:23If anyone were to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
02:28Trees that bear bad fruit being cut down and torn into the fire.
02:32The gate is narrow and hard that leads to life.
02:35Depart from me, I never knew you.
02:37Do you realize how heavily laden your sermon is with these kinds of ominous pronouncements?
02:42I haven't even named half of them.
02:44It's a manifesto, Matthew.
02:46I'm not here to be sentimental and soothing.
02:49I'm here to start a revolution.
02:51Well, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
02:54That isn't exactly...
02:55I said revolution.
02:57Not revolt.
02:58I'm talking about a radical shift.
03:00Did you think I was just going to come here and say...
03:03Hey, everyone.
03:04Just keep doing what you've been doing for the last thousand years.
03:07It's been going so great.
03:13Also, there's the beginning and the end.
03:15What about the beginning?
03:17My concern about the beginning is more logistical.
03:20Right now, your opening line is,
03:21you are the salt of the earth.
03:24I'm worried, particularly if it is windy,
03:26or if the crowd is larger than we expect,
03:29that people near the back will hear,
03:30salt the earth,
03:31and it will immediately call to mind a negative connotation.
03:34The Punic Wars?
03:36Yes.
03:37When Rome destroyed Carthage,
03:38they sold the city with salt to make it barren
03:40and to curse anyone who would rebuild upon it.
03:43I share your concern about the opening line,
03:46but for different reasons.
03:48I think the sermon needs some sort of introduction,
03:52an invitation into what, as you have rightly pointed out,
03:56would be a complex and at times challenging set of teachings.
04:02What does you are the salt of the earth even mean?
04:05I'm not good at metaphor.
04:08Salt preserves meat from corruption.
04:10It slows its decay.
04:12I want my followers to be a people
04:14who hold back the evil of the world.
04:18Salt also enhances the flavor of things.
04:20I want my followers to renew the world
04:22and be part of its redemption.
04:25Salt can also be mixed with honey
04:27and rubbed on the skin for maladies.
04:29I want my people to participate
04:31in the healing of the world,
04:33not its destruction.
04:38Then why not just say that?
04:43Come on, Matthew.
04:44Allow me a little poetry, huh?
04:47Not everyone is like you.
04:49Some people like a little flavor.
04:51Read the songs of David or Solomon.
04:53I'm not going nearly as far with metaphor as Solomon.
04:56I'm reading him next.
04:57Well, good luck.
04:58He's probably...
05:01Yeah.
05:04I told you,
05:06these things will make sense to some.
05:08But not to others.
05:10I don't want passive followers.
05:14Those who are truly committed
05:15will peer deeply into it,
05:18looking for truth.
05:21But I do agree with you.
05:22We shouldn't begin with salt.
05:25You make a valid point.
05:27Good work.
05:32You could flip it with the next image.
05:35You are the light of the world.
05:36A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
05:39I could.
05:40Or,
05:41whatever you wish that others would do to you,
05:43do all to them.
05:44That one's inviting.
05:52Master,
05:53may I ask why you keep coming down
05:54to look at the camp?
05:57They've all gone, haven't they?
06:01They have.
06:07I'm going to need time.
06:08I'm going to need time.
06:25Matthew.
06:28Matthew.
06:31Bye-bye.
06:33I've got it.
06:35The opening?
06:36Yes.
06:37What is it?
06:38A map.
06:40A what?
06:41Directions.
06:42Where people should look to find me.
06:46Okay.
06:47Give me a moment.
06:51Hmm.
06:58Hmm.
07:09I'm ready.
07:10I'm ready.
07:20Rabbi.
07:23Blessed are the poor in spirit,
07:26for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
07:31Blessed are those who mourn,
07:34for they shall be comforted.
07:39Blessed are the meek,
07:42for they shall inherit the earth.
07:46Blessed are those who hunger
07:48and thirst for righteousness,
07:53for they shall be satisfied.
07:54For they shall be satisfied.
07:57Blessed are the merciful,
08:00for they shall receive mercy.
08:06Blessed are the pure in heart,
08:10for they shall see God.
08:15blessed are the peacemakers,
08:18for they shall be called sons of God.
08:24Blessed are those who are persecuted
08:27for righteousness' sake,
08:31for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
08:39Blessed are you,
08:42when others revile you
08:44and persecute you
08:47and utter all kinds of evil
08:49against you falsely
08:51on my account.
08:58Rejoice
08:58and be glad,
09:02for your reward
09:03will be great in heaven.
09:12Yes.
09:14But how is it the map?
09:17If someone wants to find me,
09:20those are the groups
09:22they should look for.
09:31And then?
09:35You are the salt of the earth.
09:37You are the salt of the earth.
09:40You are the salt of it.
09:41You are the salt of the earth.
09:50It's the salt of the earth.
09:52It's the salt of the earth.
09:54And if you suck.
09:54and into your your mercy.
09:54He will undermine you as you
