Walk the VIA DOLOROSA (latin translated to “Sorrowful Way”) in Jerusalem, which sacred tradition cites as the path that Jesus Christ followed to his crucifixion. Along the way, join me as we pray the Stations of the Cross, a devotional practice that has been observed for hundreds of years.
The Stations of the Cross was popularized in the 4th century by St. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine. St. Helena was passionate about Holy Relics related to Jesus Christ and encouraged Christian pilgrims of the age to visit the significant sites of Jesus’ Passion in the Holy Land and Jerusalem.
“Station” comes from the latin word “statio” which in this context means a “stop or noteworthy point of interest on a journey.” The 14 stations of Jesus’ Passion are opportunities to stop and reflect on his infinite courage, love, obedience, and compassion that he demonstrated while on the path to Calvary.
Although St. Helena encouraged pilgrims to visit the locations in person, she also encouraged the faithful to visit these stations spiritually from their own homelands – and thus, the Stations of the Cross was born. Praying the Stations of the Cross involves meditating on the mysteries of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, but also was intended to include some degree of physical movement form “location” to “location” to spiritually evoke journeying to each station.
While a visit to the Holy Land should be on the bucket list for all of the Christian faithful around the world, for those who are yet to have the opportunity to make the pilgrimage to Israel, walk with me as we accompany Jesus on His Way of the Cross and visit physical locations of Jesus’ Passion along the VIA DOLOROSA in Old City Jerusalem as we pray the Stations of the Cross with reflections by Fr. Kevin Scallon & Dana.
I pray that this devotional video be uplifting to your Spirit and help guide you on your journey to follow Lord Jesus and His Way of the Cross.
