What were your thoughts on Ranger Suarez's debut? "It's still early" but Red Sox have now dropped the last 3- Where is the offense? Are you worried about the lack of power production? Can they turn it around before the home opener?
Transcript
00:00You got four and a third miserable innings from Ranger Suarez,
00:05allowed four runs, seven hits.
00:09That's a guy that you're committed to for five years and $130 million.
00:16And I understand that it's early,
00:20but I have a tiny little bit of concern about this Boston Red Sox team.
00:26And also, like, this isn't second-guessing.
00:28We said they needed a power bat this offseason.
00:31And you could have Peyton Tolley in the rotation with Connolly Early,
00:37and the $130 million for Ranger Suarez could have been allotted to the polar bear.
00:42Instead of adding to a position of relative strength,
00:46you allowed yourself to be weak at the corner infield position,
00:50and you have this guy who, I'm sorry, really great pitchers on the free agent market
00:56don't go for $130 million.
00:58They go for $400 million.
01:00Yeah.
01:01And there is, you know, I just, I watch it, and I'm sitting there,
01:04and I'm just like, yep, this is what happens when you go to,
01:07it's not the bargain bin, but it's not the Ritz-Carlton.
01:11Yeah.
01:11No, I mean, if you're going to have a belief that you can somehow buck the current trend in your
01:22league
01:22and that you're going to win a championship with pitching and not with hitting home runs,
01:30then you've got to find the right rotation for that.
01:35You've got to, in the case of a couple days ago, you've got to find the right relief pitching
01:41so that you can close these ballgames out.
01:46And Ken had a good point.
01:48Results are not so good.
01:49Yeah, I would look at, like, yeah, I mean, the Suarez thing, I guess, you know,
01:53based on listening to, you know, Lou and I believe it was Malah who was on the broadcast last night,
02:00you know, obviously they say he had a good year last year.
02:03He had an ERA like around, you know, three and a half or something like that.
02:07But, so, listen, I'll give first outing, I'll give him grace, but I'm still, there's a little,
02:14I'm agree with Curtis.
02:16You should have had your power back.
02:17I think they talked about this on the broadcast last night,
02:21is that maybe we might have to, you know, bring our expectations down.
02:27I heard this on Roman Anthony.
02:29Yeah.
02:29So, now Lou is, I love Lou to death, you know that,
02:33but sort of making excuses for Roman Anthony.
02:36But it's early.
02:38Bring him down, you know, it's a second year.
02:41It's early on all of these guys, but I am.
02:44Well, if it's early on everybody, then I think we give everybody grace, right?
02:48Yeah, no.
02:49I mean.
02:49Why are the Astros good early then?
02:51Like, why did every, I mean.
02:53Because Alvarez's home run still hasn't landed.
02:56I just, I sit back and like, this is, you get what you pay for.
03:01And I, Ken had a good point.
03:03He said, you know, if you have Tully on the big league club, then instead of Weissert the
03:07other day, and I think it was Sunday in Cincinnati, you have Tully coming out of the pen to relieve
03:12Sonny Gray.
03:13Like.
03:13Well, you know why Peyton Tully isn't up.
03:16Right.
03:16Go ahead.
03:16Well, I don't, I think John Henry's doing a spectacular job.
03:20I won't say John Henry, but I will say it's financial.
03:23I'm pretty sure that's why he's not up with the big club.
03:25Yeah, Oviedo is great in that game, too.
03:27Bing, bing, bing.
03:28I'm, I'm pretty sure it's.
03:30Is that because of the service tag thing?
03:32Yes, yes, yes.
03:32I would, I would guess.
03:34I would imagine that is why Peyton Tully is in Worcester.
03:37I would imagine.
03:38Who, by the way, we didn't talk about it yesterday.
03:40He was on with Jones and Keith Friday at the Woo Sox opener.
03:43What an impressive reaction.
03:44We obviously spoke to him in spring training.
03:46Yeah.
03:47But think of the difference in Wings.
03:49You can speak to this as an athlete.
03:50Like, so you are one day away.
03:53You sit and you got Connolly Early, Peyton Tully talking to Cora and Breslow about their
03:56start to the season.
03:58And Connolly Early's going to the Ritz-Carlton.
04:00He's starting game three and he's flying on a, you know, a chartered jet.
04:03Peyton Tully's in the middle of a six game series in St. Paul, Minnesota right now,
04:07staying at a Best Western, making one tenth of what Connolly Early's making.
04:12Like, the gap between the bigs and Triple-A is gigantic.
04:16And he couldn't have been more diplomatic.
04:18He said, you know, Connolly Early has been spectacular.
04:21Like, I kind of saw the writing on the wall.
04:22He's a great guy.
04:24I mean, that is one thing that I think is really hopeful about this ball club, future-wise,
04:30is that the young guys are, almost all of them, just really, really good people.
04:37And really, like, there's not a bunch of giant egos.
04:40No, all those guys are solid.
04:42Yeah, I mean, based off of what you say.
04:44And I think Peyton Tully knows, like, maybe I didn't have the best outing or maybe I, you
04:49know, when he talked about what his biggest thing was, throwing strikes, maybe that's
04:53kind of the reason why he's probably not up with the big club.
04:58And so, maybe he realizes that and there's no, like, resentment there.
05:02And hopefully, he's probably feeling like, all right, my time will come.
05:05This morning, Red Sox on the wrong side of an 8-1 score last night.
05:11How many runs in four games?
05:13That's a great question.
05:16One last night.
05:17It was three, two, five, and three.
05:22Carry the two.
05:23Um, they are the offensive production, um, uh, and then you add that to the, uh, less
05:31than a preferred effort from, or, uh, or, uh, result from Ranger Suarez last night, uh, and,
05:39uh, being unable to rely on your bullpen, um, signals that, uh, it's early, uh, but things
05:48need to, uh, need, things need to be better.
05:51Yeah.
05:51And poor base running.
05:52Uh, I mean, you think about that.
05:54If, uh, Duran doesn't get picked off, now you're sitting here, you might be looking at
05:58this.
05:58You, you're probably looking at the Ranger Suarez thing the same way, but your record's
06:03a little bit different.
06:04You're sitting there at two and two rather than one and three.
06:07Um, but I think the biggest thing with fans is they're obviously looking at the starting
06:11rotation.
06:12You look at Sonny Gray, our boy, the tree man didn't have a good outing.
06:16Now, Ranger Suarez, like you said, you paid him the 130 and you're expecting like, okay,
06:20he's probably your number two.
06:22He struggled.
06:23So really other than crochet and early, you're like, well, you kind of put crochet in his
06:28own bucket because he's by himself.
06:30You expect that the other guys you're like, whoa.
06:33And, but early is the bright spot.
06:35Yeah.
06:35Yeah.
06:35I feel like, uh, I'm not a math major, but 11 runs in four games is less than three
06:40runs a game.
06:40Pretty sure the Rockies scored more than that just last night.
06:43Yeah.
06:43And so I, it's just frustrating.
06:46That's all, you know, it's four games.
06:47We can keep saying that, but the, the things that you were concerned about have so far come
06:52to fruition, which is limited, limited pop outside of William Abreu.
06:57This team is literally punchless.
06:59I mean, who else has had power?
07:01Who else has been driving and runs?
07:03William Abreu is single-handedly accounting for what?
07:06Maybe seven of the 11 runs you've scored.
07:08Yeah.
07:09I just, I don't know.
07:10And then there were lowering expectations for Roman Anthony.
07:13He's 21.
07:14We all know how old he is.
07:16We all know, but we saw him on the biggest stage he'd ever been in, just hitting bombs
07:21in world baseball classic where you had stars like Aaron Judge genuflecting in front of
07:25him.
07:25So what is it with him?
07:27He's just in it.
07:28Like they said last night, maybe Lou and Malasa, this, you're going to struggle at times.
07:32I think the expectations, we all put them on this pedestal, right?
07:36And we all expected him to come out the gates and be this unbelievable talent because maybe
07:41what we saw in the world baseball classic.
07:43But I told you that means nothing until we see it as Red Sox fans and what he does for
07:49the team and out the gate, he looked good the first game, but he's kind of been struggling
07:53ever since.
07:54Now, opening day is genuinely a bit of a wine and cheese crowd.
07:58You mean the home opener?
08:00Yeah, the home opener Friday.
08:01So my thing is, I do wonder if it's, if they come back one in five, they lose five straight
08:07games, get ready for the opener.
08:08I don't know if I'm wanting to be, you know, that is going to be an awkward scene at Fenway
08:12Park.
08:12Yeah, they better turn it around.
