find my country house canada s Episode 15 Engsub
Transcript
00:00With its mountainous beauty and lush landscape,
00:03the Canadian countryside is as beautiful as it is breathtaking.
00:09Many Canadians are discovering rural life and they're making the move.
00:14We are helping them find their perfect country house.
00:20I love how lush it is, like there's definitely a lot of greenery.
00:23Kind of magical.
00:24It's amazing. I feel like I'm in Barbie's dream house.
00:35Today we're in Armstrong, British Columbia, where we're going to meet up with Marcel and Christine
00:40to help them find the perfect country home that could also possibly double as a wedding venue.
00:45Let's see what we can find.
00:50Hello, hello. Hi. Great to finally meet you in person.
00:53Christine. Jeff. Marcel. Pleasure to meet you both, finally.
00:57Now, I mean, we've picked the perfect day to go on the house hunt.
01:01Beautiful.
01:01We're going to see three very unique properties today.
01:03What is it that is an absolute must-have for you guys?
01:08I really have always liked Armstrong. I like the pace of this town.
01:12You know, 45 minutes from the airport that's international, maybe three hours, four hours out of Vancouver.
01:17It feels like you're in the middle of nowhere, but you're actually logistically like quite close to everything.
01:21So it's really the best of both worlds that way.
01:24We really want to do a wedding venue. That's been the hope.
01:27There's something really beautiful about sharing space with people in the biggest spaces of their life.
01:34I was on a date with a guy I met on Match.com, and he thought it'd be a fun
01:38idea to look at the competition.
01:40He was going through all the guys on Match.com, and I was going through the girls on Match.com,
01:45and he points to Marcel's profile, and he says,
01:48Oh my gosh, I know this guy. This is an amazing Christian man.
01:50If it doesn't work out with me, you should date him.
01:54It didn't work out with him.
01:55And I was back on Match.com, and there's Marcel's profile, and I went,
01:59Well, I guess I should try to get a hold of this guy, see if it could work out.
02:02We kind of have our second time around together.
02:05We just really want to be a part of someone's happily ever after.
02:10So we're really excited about that, finding the right place to host events.
02:15We grew up on acreages. We love that.
02:18We love the options of as big or small a garden as you want.
02:22We love the options of chickens and smaller livestock.
02:26Just the options to be able to do those sort of things.
02:28I would like to find a beautiful house with a barn that would be able to be used.
02:34I really like the idea of all season weddings.
02:36And I work in construction management.
02:38So I do a lot of renovation work.
02:40So every time I see a house, I see the possibilities and the options.
02:42But if we find a home that needs some work or some help, we can work with that.
02:46We've been playing with the idea of two to two and a half million.
02:51But that would be dependent on whether the land costs us money in adding to infrastructure
02:54or whether the land actually has, you know, marketable potential and be able to give back.
03:03Located in the heart of North Okanagan, Armstrong blends its rich agricultural heritage with expansive scenic landscapes.
03:10And with cities like Kelowna just a stone's throw away, this rural gem offers the perfect escape for couples like
03:16Marcel and Christine
03:17to help bring their dream of a wedding venue and new home to life.
03:22So we know we need land.
03:24We want space for a wedding venue.
03:26We want potential livestock.
03:28This one is about 101 acres of land.
03:31So I don't know how big your wedding venues are, but I think we can fit everyone in there.
03:35It's overwhelming how much land comes with this property.
03:38It's a little close to the road and the road seems a little busy.
03:42Is that all terrible?
03:44I shouldn't say those things.
03:46Okay, let's redo it.
03:47I love the hardy plank siding and it's really a beautifully appointed house.
03:52Like just the details, the construction details actually.
03:54It's quality built and it's quality finished and it looks like a well-loved home.
03:58What do you say we go take a look at the house?
03:59That'd be great.
04:00Follow me.
04:11All right.
04:12Welcome to house number one.
04:13What do we think?
04:14First impressions as we walk in the door.
04:16I love the woodwork.
04:17I mean the fireplace, for me, very inviting even though it's about 40 degrees outside.
04:22I can't wait for the winter time.
04:24You guys get lots of snow here.
04:25You can actually sit there and enjoy it.
04:27I appreciated the layout.
04:28I always like things that are unconventional.
04:30It's cozy.
04:31It's got a little vaulted ceiling.
04:32Part of the coziness is because it does feel a little smaller perhaps.
04:36But that was my first thought as I walk in.
04:38Obviously, big family.
04:40Got to see what the kitchen's like.
04:41You bet.
04:42Should we go explore?
04:43Sounds great.
04:43Yeah, come on.
04:48Welcome to the kitchen.
04:49I really like it.
04:50I like the hardware.
04:52It's beautiful.
04:53Yeah.
04:53It's classy.
04:54The details, the light details, the faucet details, the handle details are classy.
04:57It makes me think, oh, these people are similar to us.
05:01It's seldom that I get to walk into a kitchen where I find myself thinking, there's nothing
05:06I would change.
05:06And this was one of those kitchens.
05:08There's things you could change, but there's nothing that jumps out at you that needs to
05:11be changed.
05:12Dining space is a little small.
05:14How big is the family that's over?
05:16It's growing.
05:16We're into the grandparent age of life.
05:18Yeah.
05:18So there's no telling where it ends.
05:20We don't have a big family living with us.
05:22It's just the two of us.
05:23Boom.
05:23It's when a big family comes over.
05:25So it might be an option to push it into the living room, like temporarily.
05:29Go explore a little more, take a look at the primary bedroom.
05:32I'm going to head around back and meet out there in about five, 10 minutes.
05:34Sounds great.
05:35All right.
05:35You guys go that way.
05:36I'll go this way.
05:36Okay.
05:43I like the chandelier.
05:44I don't love it, but I can see why you'd like it.
05:48What I do love about this room is the multiple windows.
05:51And I always love windows on two adjacent walls because it just gets light all day long,
05:55which I love.
05:56The bed's a bit short.
05:57The bed's a bit.
05:58It's probably just missing the entire frame.
06:00We'll have our own bed.
06:01Yeah.
06:02The bedroom isn't, it's sort of neither here nor there.
06:04It's decent size.
06:05It's not huge.
06:06But then when you walk into the ensuite, it has a wow factor.
06:08It's got the cloth foot tub.
06:09It's got the nice hardware, classy vanity.
06:12Artistic.
06:13They're artistic and good attention to detail, I feel.
06:16And then if they can throw in the cow pitcher, I would be happy.
06:19His name is Ned.
06:30Hi.
06:31Well, finished exploring inside the house.
06:34And you explored outside the house?
06:35I tried.
06:36I mean, there's over a hundred acres, so I've still got a ways to go.
06:39It does give us a lot of options and it's beautiful.
06:41Like everything about this is beautiful.
06:43It's like the heart of the whole valley.
06:44Yeah.
06:45Every view in every direction is amazing.
06:46I liked that there is a shop that could be potential for a wedding venue, which is what
06:51we're looking for.
06:52There'd be ample room for parking here.
06:54I mean, you have fencing, but only in certain areas.
06:57So you'd have to add some fencing.
06:58I'm not sure what the water situation's like it.
07:00Yeah.
07:00So it's both, it's both more than we hope in some ways and maybe less than we hope in other
07:04ways.
07:05What do we think this one's listed at right now?
07:08Land is a lot.
07:09Yes.
07:09Land is a lot and you're paying for land here.
07:11So this will be on the higher side.
07:13I think 2.3.
07:142.3?
07:15That's my guess.
07:15Somewhere around there.
07:16Okay.
07:17You're both pretty close.
07:18It is a little bit high on the budget.
07:19I mean, you're getting over a hundred acres.
07:22This one's listed for.
07:31What do we think this one's listed at right now?
07:33I think 2.3.
07:352.3?
07:35That's my guess.
07:36Somewhere around there.
07:37Okay.
07:37You're both pretty close.
07:38It is a little bit high on the budget.
07:40I mean, you're getting over a hundred acres.
07:42It's listed at 2.6 right now.
07:44Okay.
07:46I don't mind stretching a budget if that has everything that I need.
07:50If I have to stretch the budget and still add to what I need, we'd have to do some digging
07:55into what some of the wild cards are and then have a price tag on that and sort of factor
07:58that all in.
07:59We don't have to make a decision right now.
08:00We still have two incredible properties to check out next.
08:03What do you say we head on to house number two?
08:05Sounds great.
08:06Follow me.
08:08Marcel and Christine appreciated the vast space that house one offered, but ideally they wanted
08:13something that felt a little more polished as a potential wedding venue.
08:17Well, this beautiful property I've got next might just be the perfect blend of charm and
08:22practicality that they're after.
08:25House number two.
08:26House number two.
08:27We've got a little bit of a forest and a little bit of a flat countryside.
08:30What do you guys think?
08:31Driving up to this place and coming down the Treeline driveway, that was beautiful.
08:35I could imagine brides and grooms and all of their friends coming and having it just
08:39be this beautiful space to be driving into.
08:42What else is jumping out at you as we come down that long driveway?
08:44That log barn is beautiful.
08:46I think if we're wanting to do weddings here, this particular property would really be attractive
08:52to people.
08:52You come in, there's lots of trees, there's lots of shade, there's lots of different things
08:56and I love the potential of that log barn for a venue.
09:00Should we go take a peek inside?
09:01I think so.
09:02Yes.
09:02Let's do it.
09:15House number two.
09:16A little different entrance than house number one.
09:19What do you guys think?
09:20It's dramatic.
09:23It's kind of show-stopping.
09:25Yeah.
09:25Gets your attention.
09:26It seems so much bigger with these high ceilings, which is nice.
09:29You kind of come in and you look up and there's windows all up top that are really lit in
09:33so
09:34much light.
09:34Yeah.
09:34I noticed the windows everywhere and windows on different walls and there's a lot of French
09:39doors.
09:39So like double doors that are all glassed in the middle.
09:41I love the fireplace.
09:43I love how big the space is that you could get a lot of seats in and have lots of
09:47people
09:47over.
09:47The table is huge.
09:49So you could have so many people for dinner.
09:51Yeah.
09:51I like that idea too.
09:58This is a very big kitchen.
10:00Okay.
10:00Good.
10:01I'll let you go first.
10:02But I mean, if you're preparing for up to 14 people, it seems like.
10:06Yeah.
10:06You could have six of them in the kitchen at once.
10:08Yeah.
10:08Anything interesting jumping out at you?
10:10I know one thing caught my eye.
10:12All the sinks.
10:13There are three and a half sinks.
10:15Shocking.
10:16I've never, I've never been in a kitchen with three sinks.
10:19One for everyone in the family.
10:20Sink for you.
10:21Sink for you.
10:22Sink for you.
10:22I love the counter space.
10:24I love the storage space.
10:25But I love the stove.
10:28There doesn't seem to be a hood fan.
10:30So I don't know if it makes up for it.
10:32This one looks like it could be the exception.
10:34I like it.
10:34It fits.
10:35It fits the space.
10:36The primary is upstairs.
10:38Okay.
10:38Take your time and come find me outside whenever you're ready.
10:41Sounds great.
10:42Okay.
10:42See you in a bit.
10:50First thoughts.
10:51It is tiny.
10:52When we finally went upstairs to see the primary bedroom, it kind of felt like this tiny little
10:56room.
10:57It made me go, wait, do we go?
10:58Is this the right room?
10:59Closet space, big window, only one window.
11:02It has an ensuite.
11:04Barely.
11:04It's a small one.
11:05Jack and Jill.
11:06Yeah, it's quite small.
11:07What I thought was fascinating about the primary bedroom is there's not really any way to change it.
11:12We always think in renovations and we always think, oh, we just knocked down this wall because
11:16we're both in that world professionally.
11:18But there's no where to...
11:19There's no walls to blow out.
11:20There's no walls to blow out.
11:21You can't move it because you blew out one, you're over top of the living room.
11:24And if you blew out the other, you're taken over a hallway.
11:25And it's just very small.
11:33Oh.
11:35Sorry.
11:36Slacking on the job.
11:36I mean, how could you not?
11:37This is just so peaceful out here.
11:40You have views.
11:40Like, you have views looking down over the valley.
11:43That's another bonus.
11:44But how was the rest of the house?
11:46I feel like it's a lot more expansive than we thought just walking in.
11:49It's...
11:49It's big.
11:51The master bedroom's a bit of a disappointment.
11:54Yeah?
11:54Why is that?
11:55It's really small.
11:56It's a little too tight.
11:57Yeah.
11:57This is only the second house.
11:59We're going to go see one more.
12:00Last one was listed around two, six.
12:02What do you think this one's listed for?
12:04I think like two million.
12:07Yeah, the land is a lot less here.
12:08Yeah.
12:09Quite a contrast.
12:10I mean, a hundred acres and a smaller dwelling versus a few dwellings, a little less acreage.
12:15Two?
12:16Maybe?
12:17Two, three?
12:18Would you believe me if I said it's listed for 1.88?
12:21Oh.
12:22Yeah.
12:23This house came in under our budget, so there's money to work with.
12:27It has minor upgrades and details that I'd want to correct, but we might be able to take some of
12:32that resource and put that into the barn.
12:34It gives us a bit of options.
12:36It's only house number two, though.
12:37There's still one more.
12:38Yeah.
12:38What do you say we head over to house number three?
12:40I'm excited to see it.
12:41Let's go.
12:42Me too.
12:42Awesome.
12:53Well, we've made it to house number three.
13:11Wow.
13:12It looks like an old house, which I love.
13:15But very well capped.
13:16It's all clean and well done.
13:18But with the huge tall trees around here, just the way it's situated, it feels very established, like an established
13:23property.
13:23I would say curb appeal, but we're so far up from the curb.
13:26I did notice a lot of outbuildings, which was both interesting, but they seem to be kind of like...
13:30Congested?
13:31Yeah, like it felt like a farm downtown.
13:33Yeah.
13:34Is that a thing?
13:34We'll look at that later, but what do you say we take a look inside first?
13:37I'd love to.
13:38All right.
13:38After you.
13:48Opens right up into the kitchen.
13:50It's really nice.
13:51It's beautiful.
13:52It's still got farmhouse meets modern, which is really a cool look.
13:57French country farmhouse, really.
13:58Yeah.
13:59If you want to get specific.
14:01I really liked the open floor plan.
14:04I liked walking into the kitchen and having the two-tone cabinets.
14:07I really appreciate the storage they had in there.
14:11It feels very, like, I don't want to say dated, but it does feel historic, but it's super clean, super
14:16contemporary at the same time.
14:17So it's really captured the essence of the farm style.
14:19What's interesting about this kitchen layout to me is that a lot of the counter space is actually bar space.
14:25And I don't know how prepping at bar height was, like, compared to counter height.
14:28So they have it elevated?
14:29Yeah.
14:29Thinking if it was all flat...
14:31The last one was all the same height.
14:33This one's just a lot of bar space.
14:35And speaking of drinking space, whatever, the dining room, right now it's set up very small, but it could be
14:40bigger.
14:40But if you make the dining room bigger, your living room gets smaller because they're kind of sharing an imaginary
14:45divider.
14:45I mean, you could always do the shuffle, depending on how many people are.
14:48That's true.
14:49But you never know how many people are just going to show up.
14:51Because it seems like people are just going to wander in at their will, so you kind of want to
14:54be prepared.
14:54So maybe you do need a little bit more space there.
14:57I'm going to go figure out where all of these different barn houses are.
15:01Do you guys want to go check out upstairs and check out all the bedrooms?
15:03Sounds great.
15:03If I'm lost, just ring the bell. I'll hear it and come running back.
15:06Sounds good.
15:07After you.
15:17First thoughts?
15:18Yeah, it's a really nice room.
15:20The bedroom was a little bit small.
15:22Not as small as the second house.
15:25That bedroom was very small.
15:27Yeah, and it had beautiful windows, beautiful view.
15:29The walk-in closet was really decent.
15:31The one thing I noticed, it doesn't actually have an en suite bathroom.
15:34It has it shared with the other two bedrooms upstairs, which is just a thing.
15:39It's whether you want it or not.
15:41I usually want it.
15:43Most people usually do.
15:45En suite bath.
15:46I would miss that, because I've had that the last number of years.
15:49It's just a bathroom location, which isn't a big deal for some, for others.
15:56I don't like to share as much as you do.
15:58Exactly.
15:59I like the floors.
16:00Yeah.
16:00I love the original hardwood through the whole house.
16:02It's beautiful.
16:03It just feels farmhouse, but it feels like clean, modern.
16:05It feels like stepping back in time without the dirt.
16:08And the hard work.
16:09Exactly.
16:10Yeah.
16:17Where's Jeff?
16:19He said to ring the bell.
16:21It's all yours.
16:24Oh, Jeffrey.
16:26Ah.
16:26Here you are.
16:27I see you've found your way up.
16:29What was it like upstairs?
16:31The master bedroom's a little small.
16:32And no on-suite bathroom.
16:34I did notice another bathroom, another beautiful bathroom on the main floor.
16:37And while I was exploring, I found a bathroom out there near the barns, which is actually quite interesting.
16:42I almost fell through the floor, but it's still operational.
16:45I do love that you could do weddings here.
16:49There's a beautiful riding arena there, and you could easily have the receptions there.
16:54And then there's a couple of barns to choose from here.
16:56Big, beautiful garden, already deer fenced, like big, beautiful pens, lots of riding pens.
17:01If you wanted a farm wedding, you could do a farm wedding almost overnight.
17:04You could use the riding ring, you could use the outdoor space, the field space.
17:07But if you actually wanted a barn wedding, the barns need a significant amount of work.
17:12And a lot of work might include a bulldozer.
17:14Yeah.
17:15So.
17:17What do we think this one's listed for?
17:19I would say 1.9.
17:221.9.
17:22Okay.
17:23Yeah, it's got to be 2 something, 2, 2.1.
17:28Well, I mean, if you want a little extra cash to work on the dilapidated barns, listed at 1.8
17:35right now.
17:35Oh.
17:36So we have some room to work.
17:37Yeah.
17:38I was surprised at the price of this.
17:40It's a bit of a wild card.
17:41I've renovated houses.
17:42I haven't renovated a lot of barns.
17:44And so I don't know what that would take as far as time.
17:46And if it's a structural issue, all of a sudden, does it end up having to be torn down or
17:50engineered
17:51or there's some real kind of wild cards that I'm unsure of?
17:54It is nice to have the financial buffer.
17:56We don't need an answer now.
17:57Why don't you take some time, think about it.
17:59I mean, they all have space for a wedding venue, but which one's really going to pop?
18:02And which one do you want?
18:03I mean, you can put your own stamp on it.
18:05We'll circle back and we can make a decision.
18:07Yeah.
18:07Sounds great.
18:08I'll see you guys soon.
18:19With all three houses toured, Marcel and Christine have a big decision ahead.
18:23But before they choose the perfect property to set the altar, I'm heading over to Farm
18:28Strong Cider Co., one of Armstrong's local favorites, to find out why this town's worth
18:32settling down in.
18:35Hi, I'm Jeff.
18:36I'm Hallie.
18:36Nice to meet you.
18:37That's my niece's name.
18:38That'll be easy to remember.
18:39So we are here at Farm Strong Cider Co.
18:41I could see it the whole drive up.
18:43It kind of stands out on top of all of Armstrong.
18:45How did this come about and when did you start it?
18:49July, it'll be our sixth anniversary, but my husband and I have been farming in Armstrong
18:53for 35 years.
18:54Oh wow.
18:55And we thought we needed a little retirement project so that our kids could take over the
18:59other family farm.
19:00We were looking for a piece of property, found an orchard.
19:03I wanted to make cider so we ended up with this 130-year-old barn.
19:07It is incredible.
19:08I mean, I walked through, it's massive.
19:10You could host a very large party in there if you wanted to.
19:13She's definitely a draw for people that come to the area.
19:16We try really hard.
19:18We raise all of our own proteins here and we source everything local and we just try to
19:22do a really good job and give people good value for dollar.
19:25I can tell everyone at home you do a great job.
19:29It's just a few minutes and I already feel like I'm never leaving.
19:31Awesome.
19:32That's good news.
19:33Armstrong in general.
19:34I mean, what's drawing people to live here?
19:37Yeah.
19:37You know, more people are wanting to move out of the cities and they're looking for small
19:41acreages.
19:42We've got a great sense of larger farms, but then it's a great place for a hobby farm.
19:46I mean, the scenery, it's like you look off the balcony and it's just a painting.
19:50Then you come in here and it's an absolute party, so I think it's the best of both worlds.
19:54And we're 45 minutes from an airport, so it's perfect.
19:56Oh no, this is dangerous for me.
19:57I might never leave.
19:59Now, if anyone wants to come, I mean, how do they find you?
20:01You Google cider and Armstrong or the Okanagan and we should pop up.
20:05So you can come in and have dinner or lunch and a flight and then take some home as well.
20:09Well, thank you so much for having us.
20:11Let's cheers.
20:15Well, I think it's safe to say it doesn't get much better than FarmStrong Cider Co.
20:19So much so, I've invited Marcel and Christine here to reveal their decision.
20:23Which of these three incredible houses will become their new home?
20:28Well, last time we were all together, we were on a house hunt.
20:31That was a fun day.
20:32It was a bit tricky though.
20:33I mean, I don't know which one you guys are going to end up picking.
20:35Why don't we start with house number one?
20:38I mean, 101 acres of property.
20:40After being on the second and the third property, I realized how few trees there were.
20:44There actually were on it.
20:45I really like the kitchen.
20:46It was the more sort of finished and complete design kitchen.
20:49Just, it's a smaller house.
20:51It would be a tight squeeze.
20:53You've got extended family that just pops in.
20:55Where are you going to put them if they'd stay over?
20:56And it's the top end of our budget.
20:58If that was everything we ever needed, wanted, hoped and dreamed, you can stretch the budget.
21:02But when it's like most of what we hope and some of what we dreamed, it feels like it pushes
21:07it past possible.
21:09Now, moving over to house number two.
21:12I mean, if you wanted a little more trees, it looks like it used to be a Christmas tree farm.
21:15Yeah.
21:17Loved the drive-in.
21:18You just anticipate, what am I getting into?
21:20Yeah.
21:20Because this is so pretty already.
21:21And then the first thing you see when you come down the driveway is that beautiful log barn.
21:26Works for the wedding venue.
21:27Pop those doors open.
21:28You've got a big field in front.
21:29Yeah.
21:29Somebody could say, I do.
21:31What about the actual house, the dwelling on the property?
21:34It's a big house.
21:34It's deceptive.
21:36Vaulted ceiling, big dramatic fireplace.
21:38Great space for family dinners.
21:40I can imagine all of those things, right?
21:42Yeah.
21:42Where you keep packing a lot of people and not feel like you're sitting on top of each other.
21:46If I recall properly, there was about three and a half sinks in the kitchen.
21:50They did forget to put a gas stove in.
21:52And a hood fan.
21:53And a hood fan.
21:55What about house number three?
21:56If you're looking for barns, they have barns galore.
21:59Yeah, beautiful house.
22:00Love that it's an old house that's been restored.
22:03It's right up my alley.
22:04I love the open spaces.
22:05You walk in and it's kitchen, dining, living room all open.
22:08I love that.
22:09But it seemed a little tighter in the living space and the dining room space.
22:12It didn't have an ensuite.
22:14That's a bit of a deal.
22:15Yeah.
22:1695% of the land is totally usable, workable.
22:19It had big pastures in the back, riding ring, some optional extras that we wouldn't have been looking for.
22:25Yeah, I hadn't really thought about.
22:26Yeah, I mean, private enough too.
22:28You're on the road, but you're stepped back a little bit.
22:30You've got the trees surrounding you there.
22:32Yeah, it felt private.
22:32Yeah.
22:33We had to eliminate one of the three, so we could narrow it down to two.
22:37Which one just might not work for us?
22:39I think the first one.
22:41I agree.
22:41Just a little too much land.
22:43Too much land, too much expanse, and then not enough house.
22:45Yeah, I mean, also, high end of the budget, so if you really want to expand on that house, it's
22:49gonna be tricky.
22:49So, we've narrowed it down.
22:52Which one's it gonna be?
22:53Number two or number three?
22:55We love them both.
22:57But we can't buy them both.
23:00So we're gonna go...
23:02With number two.
23:04Number two!
23:05I'm not even joking.
23:06Once I saw that barn and just the whole open space, I thought, this is perfect for a wedding venue.
23:12We gotta call the realtor right away.
23:14I'm coming in as soon as it's ready.
23:16Let's call.
23:17Cheers.
23:17Cheers.
23:18Thanks, Jeff.
23:19I'm so happy Marcel and Christine said I do to their dream country home here in Armstrong.
