00:00Um, who is this?
00:02Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at things to remember before seeing the Super Mario Galaxy movie.
00:08Still working through my demons, I suppose.
00:12Anyway.
00:15Number 10. The games it's based on.
00:17It goes without saying that the film is primarily based on 2007's Super Mario Galaxy and its 2010 sequel.
00:27The Super Mario Galaxy movie won't be exclusively drawing from those games, however.
00:31Retro fans will find nods to classics, like Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and even Yoshi's Island.
00:38For a younger generation raised on Super Mario Odyssey, this film includes the Toastaranans from the Sand Kingdom, as well
00:44as the realistically rendered T-Rex.
00:53This won't be the first acknowledgment of Super Mario Galaxy in the film series, either.
00:57The first movie featured a blue luma, specifically a lumilee.
01:01These star creatures originated from the 2007 game, although this one is far too excited to meet the Game Over
01:06screen.
01:07Where am I?
01:13Home.
01:14Number 9. Power-Ups.
01:16Life is like a... block. You never know what you're gonna get.
01:19The previous film introduced Mario to power-ups, granting temporary abilities.
01:28Mushrooms help Mario grow, or shrink.
01:31Fire flowers allow him to shoot balls of fury.
01:33The tanuki suit enables him to fly, and we think the cat suit is self-explanatory.
01:37Oh, I'm a cat!
01:39The Super Mario Galaxy movie will see Mario and friends experiment with more power-ups.
01:44Among them is the fan-favorite frog suit.
01:50Enhancing swimming and jumping, the frog suit first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3,
01:54and then inexplicably wouldn't make a true comeback until Super Mario Maker 2, almost 30 years later.
02:00Time will only tell if the film features power-ups that debuted in the Mario Galaxy games, such as B
02:05-Mario.
02:14Number 8. Baby Mario and Luigi.
02:17In the last movie, Luigi reminisced about how Mario looked out for him even when they were little, moustacheless babies.
02:33Baby Mario and Luigi will again appear in the Super Mario Galaxy movie.
02:38Based on the footage we've seen thus far, though, it apparently won't be another flashback, since Toad and Yoshi are
02:43present.
02:43This could mean two things. Perhaps Mario and Luigi are de-aged at some point in the film, requiring Yoshi
02:49to protect them.
02:50With a Nintendo Super Scope?
02:51This would be similar to the dynamic in Yoshi's Island.
03:01It's also possible that time travel will factor into the plot, meaning the older and younger versions of the Mario
03:06Bros. could team up, a la Mario and Luigi partners in time.
03:18Number 7. Birdo.
03:20The Super Mario Galaxy movie will mark Birdo's cinematic debut.
03:24Like Mouser, this pink, egg-shooting creature originally wasn't even supposed to be part of the Mario Bros. lore, serving
03:31as a boss in Doki Doki Panic.
03:37Since the original version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was deemed too difficult for westerners, they got Doki Doki Panic
03:43instead, with a few tweaks.
03:45Birdo went on to appear in other Mario games, sometimes as an antagonist, and other times as a companion to
03:51characters like Yoshi.
04:00Among the gaming community, there's still an ongoing debate as to whether or not Birdo is a transgender character.
04:05Nintendo has never officially given confirmation.
04:08Maybe the film will provide insight, although it's unclear who, if anyone, is voicing Birdo.
04:16Number 6. Bowser Jr.
04:23When they first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, the Koopalings were established as Bowser's seven children.
04:28The Koopalings continue to appear in other Mario games and media.
04:32In recent outings, though, the Koopalings have been retconned as Bowser's kids, instead serving as underlings.
04:37The current canon has established Bowser Jr. as the Koopa King's only offspring.
04:42Bowser Jr. first appeared in 2002's Super Mario Sunshine, under the guise of Shadow Mario.
04:46Leave my mama alone, you bad man!
04:49The Koopa Prince framed Mario using a magic brush, bringing whatever he paints into reality.
04:54Whether or not Shadow Mario makes an appearance, Bowser Jr. will be dropping in to rescue his incarcerated, shrunken-down
05:00father.
05:01Not only will he be armed with his paintbrush, but he'll cruise around in his junior clown car.
05:06The Bowser name shall be feared once more!
05:10Number 5. Characters We Haven't Seen Yet
05:13Much of the core Mario cast appeared in the last film, with more set to be introduced here.
05:18The verdict is still out on when we'll see three characters in particular.
05:22Wario was established as a big bad in Super Mario Land 2, though he's now more of a rival and
05:27anti-hero.
05:27Don't let Mario get the six golden coins! Don't let Mario reach the palace!
05:33Since Wario is basically a greedier Mario, it only makes sense there'd be a bizarro Luigi.
05:38Enter Waluigi, who's been causing mischief since Mario Tennis.
05:44Princess Daisy also debuted in the Super Mario Land games, before Mario Tennis made her a more permanent fixture of
05:49the franchise, often paired with Luigi.
05:51It's only a matter of time until these three show up, even if it's not necessarily in the Mario Galaxy
05:56movie.
05:57Number 4. The Kongs
05:59Donkey Kong played a major role in the Super Mario Bros. movie.
06:03Is this what you came for?
06:05I love you, D.K.!
06:07Also present was his father, King Cranky Kong, with a questionable voice.
06:11I guess he got the wrong mushroom!
06:13Though not on screen long, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Chunky Kong, and several other Kongs could be spotted as well.
06:20Despite their presence in the first film, the Kongs have been M.I.A. from the promotional material for the
06:25Mario Galaxy movie thus far.
06:27This suggests that they won't prominently factor into the plot, although that doesn't mean they won't appear at all.
06:32Even if they don't, there are already rumors circulating about Seth Rogen reprising his role in a Donkey Kong spin
06:38-off movie,
06:38which would more than compensate for his absence here.
06:41Don't be surprised if that's teased in a post-credits scene.
06:43You did good, kid! Make your pecs dance! You deserve it!
06:48No time now! Definitely later!
06:50Number 3. Princess Peach's Origins
06:52Just as Mario and Luigi are originally from Brooklyn, the first film revealed that Princess Peach wasn't born in the
06:58Mushroom Kingdom either.
06:59You don't seem like you're from here.
07:02I don't know where I'm from.
07:04As a baby, she arrived through a pipe and was taken in by the Toads, who made her their princess.
07:09Because why not?
07:11Mario floats the idea that maybe she's from his world, seeing how they're both human.
07:15Peach responds with a line that, in retrospect, was an obvious setup for the next movie.
07:19There's a huge universe out there, with a lot of galaxies.
07:24The Super Mario Galaxy movie will give Peach a chance to explore that universe, potentially answering where she came from.
07:30Peach's parents have never officially appeared in the games.
07:33Of course, Mario and Luigi's parents were also barely seen before the movie gave them a more substantial role.
07:38They gave an Oscar for Worst Actors?
07:41Hey!
07:41What'd I do?
07:42Number 2. Rosalina
07:44Brie Larson is voicing Rosalina, perhaps the most significant character to derive from the Mario Galaxy games.
07:50A princess who looks after the Lumas in the Comet Observatory,
07:53Rosalina's backstory is fleshed out in a storybook.
08:08It's surprisingly kind of a tearjerker, revealing that Rosalina set out to help Aluma find their mother.
08:13As it turns out, Rosalina lost her own mother, ultimately finding solace among the stars.
08:37We can only hope that the film will preserve Rosalina's origin story.
08:40Perhaps the movie could even expand upon it, providing a connection between Rosalina and Peach.
08:45They have always shared a resemblance, after all.
08:47If Peach is indeed from another galaxy, maybe it's the same one as Rosalina's.

09:16Number 1. Yoshi
09:18A herd of Yoshis could be seen running by in the Super Mario Bros. movie.
09:22Yet, the green dinosaur that'll form a lasting bond with Mario didn't appear.
09:27At least, not outside of his egg.
09:28At Bowser and Peach's wedding, one of the gifts was a green-spotted egg.
09:38The wedding goes off without a hitch, but it does go off with a bang.
09:41This results in the Yoshi egg winding up in Brooklyn's sewer system.
09:45Those who stuck around until the post-credits scene got to see the egg just start to hatch.
09:49At some point, the newly hatched Yoshi will make his way to the Sand Kingdom, where a friendship will begin.
09:59Yoshi is finally coming to the silver screen.
10:03No, the 1993 version doesn't count.
10:06Go ahead and say it.
10:10Dinosaur.
