05:53To my left is Dan Mincham.
05:57Bass player we met at Folk Alliance International.
06:00It's like a conference.
06:02And this is Joshua Lopez, Electric Guitar.
06:07And that is Yun Lee, musician, pianist, as well as producer.
06:14And Be Mine, the song that you just performed, what is it about?
06:18It's about that moment when you realize that you've fallen for somebody
06:22and you want to tell them.
06:25And you're in the process of convincing yourself to do that.
06:28So you have moved a lot in your life.
06:31Tell me about it.
06:32I grew up in Singapore.
06:35And like you said, I moved around quite a bit.
06:37I lived for about 10 years in the States.
06:39I spent some time in Guatemala, South Korea, Morocco.
06:42And I moved to Canada a few years ago.
06:44And how did that impact your music?
06:46I would say in a lot of ways, because I think for me, music was a way to connect with
06:53different people across cultures.
06:55And in other ways, I think moving around and writing really inspired some of my songs.
07:03So I write a lot about the search for home and coping through life's, you know, some of life's challenging
07:11moments, as well as moments of joy.
07:14And I think being in Toronto right now has been really helpful as a musician, because I'm surrounded by such
07:21a diverse music community.
07:22And there's a lot of opportunities and areas for growth.
07:26And you have a big influence in your life, your mom.
07:29Yes, yes.
07:30How did she impact your career?
07:32I know that she played the piano as well.
07:34She did.
07:34But so growing up, she played the piano and then I, you know, all of us children, we learned how
07:41to play the piano.
07:43And I the funny thing is, I actually, you know, kind of left that for a little bit.
07:47And then I came back to music years later when I moved.
07:52And I taught myself the guitar from then on.
07:55And so my mom actually passed away a few years ago.
08:00Sorry to hear that.
08:01That's OK.
08:03But she, you know, I think through processing some of the experiences that came with that, because I was abroad
08:10when she passed away, I turned to songwriting.
08:14And I think a lot of my songs tend to be very personal because they are inspired by personal experiences.
08:20And I have a couple of songs that are dedicated to her.
08:25And so, yeah, so she influenced a lot of my songwriting and my style.
08:29Your second song, Everything is Changing.
08:32I want to hear about it.

08:33So that's a relatively new song as we speak.
08:37It's about how when the world around us is changing and there's full of noise.
08:46It's a reminder to kind of hold on to the things that matter, the people that matter to us and
08:53to hold them close, sort of.

30:19And what made you think that music wasn't a fit for you?
30:23It was a little bit of just
30:25I wasn't a classical pianist
30:27Like I thought I was gonna be
30:29And I felt
30:30Because I didn't have that same relationship with piano
30:33That a lot of my friends did
30:34I felt like I couldn't be at that level
30:37You are at that level
30:38Because right now
30:39You are here at the stage of CMC TV Talent
30:42Exactly
30:42And you've been studying music for a while
30:44Yes
30:45I've been involved in music for over a decade now
30:48I've been doing piano since I was, I think, eight
30:50And I've gone through band in high school and elementary
30:53I even studied music at U of T
30:56I mean, music's been my whole life
30:59And in part that's thanks to my dad, to be honest
31:01And your songs are also very personal

31:05I usually write about any emotions or feelings that I've had
31:10That I never got to share
31:11Or if my friends or family have any emotions
31:14They haven't been able to share
31:15I usually take inspiration from that
31:17And you were just talking about your dad
31:19How did your dad inspire you so much in this journey?
31:22I mean, he was a DJ
31:23And he's always been playing music in the house
31:27And I guess I've got like an ear towards it
31:30I just grew up in music
31:31It felt like there wasn't really much of anything else for me
