00:04Today I'm in the Canary Islands house hunting around the seaside resort of Costa Edeca on
00:09the glorious southwest coast of Tenerife. I'm Ben Hillman, an interior designer and
00:14property expert. For the past few years I've been helping house hunters to find their dream
00:19properties whilst giving them a little design inspiration too. Today I'll be using all my
00:24skills to help house hunters Sally and Lee find the perfect place for sun-drenched getaways and
00:29they have very specific priorities in mind. Those railings they would definitely block your
00:35suntan and make you into a zebra wouldn't it I think? They would. So this this this is scuppering
00:40it for you? Yeah. But it doesn't take me long to nail that one. I think it's very very nice.
00:47The
00:47outside space definitely more our style as well as Annette. On the way I visit the best holiday let
00:55the island has to offer. Wow. Whoa look at this plow my goodness. Yeah it's amazing. That is really an
01:03epic view.
01:03Yes. But at the end of the day do I find Sally and Lee their perfect place in the sun.
01:09Wow. Yeah. Your own pool. That's a dunking pool isn't it? Very nice. Yes. Great stuff. Well all I'm looking
01:16for is a pat on the back.
01:24Lee has been holidaying on Tenerife ever since he was a small boy and now that he's passed his passion
01:31for the island on to Sally they've been holidaying here every year twice a year as regular as clockwork
01:39but it's only now that they've sold their restaurant and pub business back in the UK that they're finally
01:44able to wind down and buy a holiday home that the whole family can enjoy. Married couple Sally and Lee
01:51have been together for 15 years and married for seven. I love Lee because he makes me laugh. He makes
01:59me
01:59really happy. He's really kind and caring. He looks after me and he loves me nearly as much as I
02:08love him.
02:10I think the main reason I love Sally really she's just a perfect fit for me. You know she always
02:15has
02:15been from the minute I've known her really and truly and she's just I couldn't get anybody better
02:20if I'm being honest. With space for Lee's two children and two grandchildren to visit high on
02:25the wish list as well as access to a golf course they're focusing their search around cost of a
02:29decade and following the sale of their business have a generous budget of 300 to 450 thousand pounds.
02:36Situated in the Canary Islands flights from the UK to Tenerife take around four and a half hours.
02:42Costa a decade is famous for its family friendly beaches with golden sands and clear waters where
02:48you can enjoy a wide range of water sports. It's situated close to the Teide National Park which
02:54is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a dramatic volcanic landscape. This upmarket resort is one of
03:00the most desirable places to live on the island. The property market in Tenerife is extremely hot
03:07right now. In fact prices have risen by 25 percent over the past year and actually the area of Costa
03:15Adeci that I'm in right now is the most expensive spot in all of the Canary Islands with four bedroom
03:22detached properties selling for 2.2 million pounds and while there are more affordable areas out there
03:30I do get the feeling I'm facing a bit of a challenge. Before we start our search I want
03:37to find out exactly what my house hunters are looking for so we're meeting for a chat on
03:41Parade del Duque one of the best beaches on the island. All right then guys welcome to wow sunny Tenerife.
03:49Wow. You look very happy to be here. I am very happy to be here. Are you sort of heading
03:54down to the
03:54beaches just putting your feet up and doing nothing or what what do you tend to do? We tend to
03:59do be
03:59really boring to be fair we like we get up we don't really eat breakfast or anything like that so
04:04when we get out to the pool we always go to the gym I might not look it but we
04:08always go to the gym
04:09and and that and do an hour in the gym a day and sunbathe most of the time and then
04:13we walk an
04:13awful lot. We're probably a little bit more active when we're here because the weather allows you to
04:19go out in the evening for a two-hour walk. Let's drill into what it is that would fulfill that
04:24dream
04:25what does it look like the property out here for you guys? It looks open plan modern preferably
04:31three bedrooms okay the children will come out here and our grandchildren will come out here as well
04:35so we need to have the room for them and some outside space is important to us. You know we're
04:42here for the outside living that's that's why you want to do it and definitely a pool of some
04:46description. You want a pool? Yeah communal it doesn't have to be a private one we're not too
04:51fussy as long as there's one. Sally's a dipper she's in and out of a pool all the time. Yeah
04:55I'm in and out in and out.
04:56Like a hobnob. Yeah I am. Yeah exactly right. I don't crumble quite as much but yeah.
05:02What would you say is the single most important factor for the search?
05:06The area it's in is also important. Yeah your ideal location that is Costa Adeque?
05:12Yeah. Yeah kind of from here onwards really. Okay and how far out would you be willing to push?
05:18Probably about three miles that way. Okay. Are there any no-no's for this search?
05:23If the property needs a lot of work doing. Right. We're not against cosmetic work but we're um not
05:30the most what's the what would be the word? DIY people. You're in a fantastic position to make
05:35this happen. You've got a budget of 300 to 450 thousand pounds. Yeah. Which is immense. It's
05:40fantastic. Now I have lined up five fantastic properties for you. Should we go and see them?
05:46Yes. Brilliant. Come with me.
05:51Before heading to our first property we're popping into Adeque. A traditional town a few miles inland
05:56from the more tourist focused Costa Adeque to see a different side of the island.
06:02I've got to say that view for people that don't know the island really sells it I think. How well
06:09do you know it though? Because I know you love the beach but do you come up here? Yeah we
06:13do come up
06:13here actually. Our favourite restaurant's actually in here. It's the garlic chicken place and it's very
06:17famous and only the locals knew and then obviously other people got to know it so we come up here
06:22quite
06:22a bit actually. Ah so that's the draw. That is the draw. A bit of garlic chicken. And sangria. Perfect
06:28combination. That's always the draw. Let's be honest.
06:32And look at this modernist piece here. I don't actually don't think this was here last time I came.
06:37This is quite new isn't it? Yeah. And it looks like there's a brand new bell tower for the church.
06:42It's just the architecture's incredible. Yeah. I think. Is that something that floats your boat when you're sort of over
06:48here? Yeah and it's the you see a different side to Tenerife. Like
06:51you say some of it's quite commercial down nearer the beaches. And definitely the people here are
06:56that are the true local people that you see. Yeah. The Canarians. The Canarians absolutely yeah. Can I
07:02tempt you to the first property? Absolutely. Okay we're going to jump in the car. It's ten minutes from here.
07:06All right let's go.
07:11Property one is in El Madronel around half a mile from the coast. This exclusive area has
07:16mainly luxury apartments, townhouses and villas and I'm confident my house hunters
07:21will love the property I've got lined up for them.
07:26Right then. Our first property and our very first swimming pool. Does it look good?
07:30Yeah I think the pools and what okay size really isn't it? Yeah it's okay yeah. It is a communal
07:35one. Yeah.
07:36Shared amongst 90 apartments here. Okay. Ninety in this pool maybe it's a bit small for a hundred and eight.
07:42How busy is that going to get? Well at the moment. Not very. Yeah. No absolutely. I mean if you
07:47find like this it'd be lovely.
07:48What are your thoughts on the look of this place? Not sure about it. I don't know that I'm completely
07:52really enamored with this here. Okay. I'm being honest yeah. No no but do be honest because I need to
07:58know what is and what isn't going to work for you on this search.
08:01So what I am going to show you is a two bedroom apartment. First floor apartment just over there.
08:05Full width balcony. Two bedrooms. It's not the three. That is the compromise here. It's priced at just under £304
08:12,500.
08:12Okay. Okay. Okay. So let that sink in. It's on the lower end. Yeah. It is. Shall we go and
08:17see it? Yes. Let's do that.
08:21As well as that pool this first floor apartment has a balcony with sea and pool views off the living
08:27and dining room.
08:28There's also a separate kitchen, double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, second double bedroom and a family bathroom.
08:38And then into a very bright living room with that view out towards the sea. Nice view. Stunning view.
08:44Very nice view. Size wise could this work? Probably not if I'm being honest. Oh really? It's probably a little
08:50bit.
08:50Straight away like that you know. Yeah. Okay. How too small are we talking here?
08:55Not majorly but just a little bit and it's probably because it's not open plan maybe that's maybe what's slightly
09:00put me off maybe.
09:02I think the view out there is fantastic I've got to say. I know you didn't want to do structural
09:05work but there is that opportunity with the kitchen behind here at least to open this up a bit.
09:11Maybe have a sort of a breakfast bar area then and it's just a bit more interactive when you've got
09:15family over. Yeah. Yeah.
09:17What I want to know is why you're doing this now because it feels like you've had this dream for
09:22many years. So why has it taken so long?
09:24Just because we've given up the pub really and truly and the restaurant that's why it's come about. Always thought
09:30of doing it. We definitely want to do it.
09:31Regardless we will be buying a place out here.
09:34You wouldn't have been able to spend as much time out here when we had the pub as we would
09:39want to. Yeah.
09:41To get a benefit out of purchasing a property abroad. Yeah.
09:43Because we worked so much so I think it's more. Because it is round the clock isn't it? Yeah.
09:47Kind of. Yeah and sometimes we I mean we'd always have a break in November but then sometimes we might
09:53have to wait.
09:54As soon as you get back you'd be straight into the Christmas period and we used to be so busy
09:57throughout the Christmas.
09:58Full throttle. Yeah.
09:59As soon as we're here should we at least step out of the balcony and give it a chance?
10:03Yeah of course. Come on then.
10:07Right then time to catch a little bit of sunshine. It's not bad is it?
10:11So what are your thoughts on the full width balcony?
10:15Yeah it's a nice balcony. It's a good size but those railings they would definitely block your suntan and make
10:21you into a zebra wouldn't it I think?

10:23So this this this is scuppering it for you?
10:26Yeah. I know you've got the pool down there but to come out with your morning coffee and sit in
10:30the sun.
10:31I know it gets the sun but not all over.
10:35It wouldn't be like a sun lounger kind of.
10:37So again this is a no-no for you guys? Yeah.

11:06Not the best start but Sally and Lee have given useful feedback there.
11:11My next place isn't too far away but as I know these two love the beach.
11:15We're heading back to Playa del Duque where we first met to have a better look around as it really
11:20is one of the best stretches on the island.
11:24So look we are back down at the seaside obviously not too far from that apartment.
11:29This is Playa del Duque.
11:31Do you hit this beach much when you're here?
11:33No you should go to the one on the far side actually.
11:35Oh really?
11:36Yeah the other side.
11:37How come?
11:38We've always stayed somewhere near here and we always go to the left for some reason.
11:42I have no idea why.
11:43No rhyme or reason to it.

11:45You've got such an amazing walkway here. It extends some 20 kilometres down the coast.
11:50Are you up for a walk of that magnitude?
11:52I love the walkway and we walk a lot so for us the walking to be able to walk from
11:58one place to another is massive.
11:59From here you can walk right the way through to the Las Christianas down the other side there.

12:04Oh the one close to the house I'm going to show you.

12:14Coming up have I worked my magic for Sally and Lee and given them the space that they need at
12:20my next property.
12:21A three bedroom duplex with three outdoor spaces.
12:32Today I'm on the Canary Islands helping Sally and Lee to find their dream holiday home on Tenerife close to
12:40the spectacular beaches of Costa Rica.
12:43But I came a cropper with this terracotta apartment in El Madronel.
12:47It wasn't big enough.
12:48The balcony just well wasn't what they had in mind and the pool was too small.
12:54They're looking for the perfect pad for family holidays and have a maximum budget of 450,000 pounds.
13:01In search of the beach and coastal walk in which these two love we've come to Playa Fanyabe.
13:07Despite being right on the coast properties here are a bit cheaper than my last location so I can show
13:13my house hunters somewhere with all the space they're looking for.
13:15I think I might have nailed it.
13:19Right then.
13:20A mere stroll from the beach that I know you love.
13:24We are at our next property starting at the pool.
13:27Bigger pool this time.
13:29Yeah.
13:29Nice decent pool definitely.
13:31So are you finding comfort in the location?
13:33Yes.
13:34Yes.
13:34This is much nicer for us.
13:36This particular property is just beyond those trees.
13:39Okay.
13:40So it's got a lovely green aspect.

13:42It's a duplex.
13:44Okay.
13:44I'm going to call it two and a half bedrooms because on the very top floor you've just got an
13:49open space which you can sort of be quite flexible with.

13:53Two bathrooms as well.
13:55Two terraces.
13:56Oh.
13:56This particular property is just over 339,000 pounds.

14:02So shall we go and have a closer look?

14:06As well as access to that pool this duplex has two fairly spacious terraces for al fresco dining and sunbathing.
14:14Both with a nice view plus a smaller balcony off of the bedroom.
14:18Inside is a living dining room and once again a separate kitchen.
14:22Two of the bedrooms are doubles while the third as I suggested is a little smaller.
14:28Finally there are two shower rooms.
14:34Right.
14:34Instantly you will notice much longer, much more space when it comes to living and dining.
14:40So it's a proper house really.

14:45What are your first thoughts on it?
14:46Yeah definitely better than the previous one.

14:50My one thought would be at the minute that one thought is when does the sun come on that balcony

14:57Basically this is west facing at the back so it's more afternoon evening sun.

15:15I haven't managed to get that on this particular sort of budget.

15:22I am quite quite keen on the open plan kitchen lounge spreading into one to the other.

15:49That's just because you like a super king size bed.

15:51I'd have a super king bed and I'd move in here straight away.

15:56And quite good that the wardrobes are built and you're not having to bring separate items

16:00And quite a nice green outlook as well.

16:33I think it's definitely a lot better than the other one.

19:10Erm, it's not difficult.
19:12I think the prices have gone up quite a lot since Brexit as well.

19:16They've actually gone up quite a lot recently, yeah.
19:18But they're still, I think some of them are still very reasonable for what they are.
19:23But depending on whether you want to be on the coast or in the mountain.
19:25Is there a key spot where you think five years from now that is going to be the place everyone
19:31wants to be in?
19:32It's a little bit of a secret at the moment.
19:33I would say Costa Adeque is probably the place that everybody wants to go.
19:38Funny enough, that's where we want to be.
19:40Yeah, well even my own family when they come out, they're all down there.

20:25holiday home in Costa Adeque to share with the whole family.
20:29And that search is still on because we are yet to find our first contender.
20:34They didn't like this terracotta apartment in El Madrenel and this duplex in Playa Fanyabe failed to impress them.
20:41They've sold their business in the UK and are searching for their dream holiday home with a maximum budget of
20:46£450,000.
20:51We're now in Playa Paraíso, a purpose-built resort with three small beaches set into rocky bays.
20:57Having shown Sally and Lee a couple of properties at the lower end of their budget,
21:01I'm now going to try somewhere towards the top.
21:04I really hope it pays off.

21:09And it is here, in this development, which I think is rather attractive.

32:19Sally and Lee loved this Moorish duplex in Playa Paraíso that had plenty of room for their
32:25family to holiday with them and was on the market within their maximum £450,000 budget.
32:31My final offering is another great option that I'm confident will give our contender
32:35a run for its money.
32:38But before we go there, I'm taking a break from my house hunt and heading to one of the
32:43best holiday lets on the island.
32:45It has a stunning pool with views down to the coast and a host of outside social spaces
32:50perfect for a family holiday.
32:53Inside, it's rather contemporary and designed to take in as much of the wonderful sunlight
32:58you get on this island as possible.
