01:13today i'm in orlando florida to meet the most decorated women's wrestler in wwe history
01:19charlotte flair born ashley elizabeth flair she is wrestling royalty as the daughter of wwe
01:26hall of famer and icon rick flair she set her sights on the wwe choosing her ring name charlotte flair
01:34and has been kicking ass ever since here we go but in december of 2023 charlotte injured her acl so
01:44i'm anxious to check in on her recovery i also want to hear more about the challenges of breaking free
01:49of her dad's shadow the heartbreaking struggles her brother reid faced and how she views her role
01:55in lifting up women athletes i love any chance i get to hang with charlotte
02:16so much for doing this i appreciate you of course thanks for coming good wow awesome place
02:26thank you this is the most exciting room in the house or at least i think it's like look this
02:31is your
02:32office yeah it looks awesome
02:37so of all the stuff that's on the walls is there something that means the most
02:43i love the picture of my dad and reid in the limo and then probably my divas championship when i
02:50retired it just because like oh i made it so it's probably the first big thing i did
02:55gotcha tell me about the robe i wore this robe at wrestlemania 34 and actually you did a run-in
03:04after this match up the ramp i did so that's not why it's special um but thank you for remembering
03:12but
03:13that match was one of my best wrestlemania matches and i only wore it that one time i think
03:18hmm so it's kind of retired to the office wwe is uh known the world over how does it make
03:25you feel
03:25when you see something like this when your face is on the poster for me just being a woman and
03:32then
03:32the only female on the poster and like front and center i'm like oh yeah i know you're recovering
03:38from an injury uh right or left leg okay so it's not the accelerator leg no so we'll still be
03:43able to
03:44drive yes and you're gonna take me to physical therapy which i'm actually super excited let's go
03:50please after you very cool office thank you so much how's it been so far physical therapy at first
03:58i was devastated with it being wrestlemania 40 but now that i've needed a challenge like this in my
04:03personal life because i felt kind of not that i want to be injured but you needed a challenge what
04:09do you mean by that i've never been injured other than getting my teeth knocked out multiple times
04:14so this being taken out and having to work around it it's opened my eyes to just how much i
04:19maybe
04:20took for granted how lucky and healthy i was for so long how's the journey been so far
04:27like a typical journey that's good well we're going to talk about that on the ride what i want to
04:32talk
04:32about before we go on the ride is the ride it is gorgeous yep the range rover has a rich
04:40heritage of
04:41british craftsmanship queen elizabeth personally owned seven of them in her time the designer of the
04:47range rover may have worked on jet and gas turbine engines but his car is also eco-conscious built into
04:54the body is the equivalent of nearly 60 pounds of recycled plastic and yet it was beautiful enough to
05:00be displayed in the louvre in paris where it was considered a masterpiece of industrial design
05:06so why the range rover sport so i'll go back to when i was in my team yeah let's do
05:10it
05:22i was obsessed with freddie prince jr and his yellow defender yeah like and she's all that of course
05:30everyone remembers that car i was like this is my dream car mom and dad if you don't buy me
05:35this
05:36defender so for my 15th birthday my parents surprised me with a green land rover they had
05:43the car waiting with balloons and everything and i was like this sounds so bratty but i was like it's
05:49green and then for my 16th they didn't get me the defender but they found a limited edition land rover
05:56that was yellow with the carbon fiber hood that's right and then when i started to make money when
06:03i bought my first one i was like oh i made it man i'm doing good enough to do this
06:09for myself yes
06:10cool i'm a rover fan myself so i love this truck yeah i think they're super capable i think they're
06:15super sexy yes this color is awesome the metallic black is fantastic i know we got some work to do
06:22on
06:22your knee and i want to talk about a bunch of stuff you just shared so let's get in the
06:26car and go for
06:27a ride
06:39how long have you been doing this wrestling thing i started july 2012. no prior experience coming from
06:47you yeah that sounds weird i know no but it's awesome as a young girl did you ever think that
06:54this would be a path no definitely not why because i just played sports that's what i was good at
07:03wrestling this wasn't a thing i was like oh that's where you take your friends and show off
07:06what did you think was going to be your path at 17 18. i loved volleyball loved loved loved and
07:16then
07:16when i got to college i kind of got a little lost when i ended up quitting volleyball man i
07:22got lost in
07:22college too oh such an interesting time and i was on the five-year plan so at least you had
07:31a plan
07:32i just knew i had to graduate it was just like that's what you do you graduate from high school
07:37you graduate from college and then you get a job i graduated from nc state moved back to charlotte and
07:43just found my way into personal training because that's what i knew how did even getting involved in
07:49sports entertainment come about so it's happy and sad my brother reen all he ever wanted to do was be
07:59my
07:59dad from the moment he could walk he was going to be a wrestler after college reed was in and
08:08out of
08:08rehabs kicked out of school living with me not living with me ultimately when the four horsemen were
08:18inducted into the hall of fame in 2012 one of the wwe producers was at dinner with my dad and
08:26i think
08:26they were trying to get like reed thinking about his future so the producer said to me hey why aren't
08:32you doing this why aren't you doing this to me what do you mean why aren't you doing this like
08:36the
08:36business oh he said to you like yeah why aren't you so into this why aren't you into this yes
08:41i was
08:42like dad i want to do this i want to do this i want to do this can you help
08:44me did you relatively
08:46easily get the opportunity for a tryout hunter called me because he'd known me for a long time
08:52i think he was a little apprehensive yeah and just concerned about why he even said to me you know
09:00just because we're gonna give you a job doesn't mean we're gonna give reed a job i thought if i
09:05got
09:06in could i get reed in and if reed got in could i help him stay the course like would
09:13he stay sober
09:15could he fulfill his dreams because i didn't have any dreams like i was like oh i just play sports
09:18but reed died the year i started
09:27here i am like doing all these things and he's not here and if he hadn't had a dream
09:34i don't know like wrestling gave me life it gave me purpose it gave me confidence like
09:39i can literally walk out in front of 105 000 people and be like i'm that girl but like wrestling
09:46gave me
09:46that it got me on the right path it gave me structure and it allowed me to fulfill my brother's
09:52dream
09:59you've said it's easy to get hired in the ww but you also got hired as the daughter of rick
10:05flair
10:05one of the most known names in our avenue around the world that comes with such a heavy weight
10:16well it's never about making him proud he is just who he is i'm proud to be his daughter but
10:23even though
10:23he got me in like he didn't talk to me about wrestling later down the road they had him be
10:28my manager for
10:30like a year so that meant he went everywhere i went so he sitting at the monitor at live events
10:35and
10:35everyone's asking him questions about their match and like i never went to my dad i just couldn't you
10:40guys never talked about the business when he saw me and natty's match in my first big match when i
10:46won
10:47the nxt women's championship that match actually i think made my dad take me serious and had that match
10:53not happened showing them what we can do i don't think i'd be here today after that match he notices
10:59finally that holy smokes my my daughter is good at this that wasn't like a priority in my life that
11:06wasn't a thing it was just like constantly trying to earn the respect of my peers i wanted my peers
11:12to like
11:21me describe to me the women's evolution within the wwe i think women in sports overall has made an
11:31impact over the last what 10 15 years proving that they can draw revenue sell out arenas so as the
11:39world started to change and with the women's usa soccer team and ronda rousey i feel as if our
11:46company somewhat had to listen to that and when i started at the time total divas had just launched
11:53which started bringing in outside eyeballs people who wouldn't tune into wrestling maybe would because
12:02of total divas yeah so when they decided okay what if we give them five minutes ten minutes bring up
12:11new
12:11girls well i happen to be in that new girl group there was three of us after 10 years i
12:18main evented raw
12:19and then went on to main event hell in a cell then went on to main event wrestlemania 35 which
12:25in our
12:25industry as you know women main eventing wrestlemania is like you would have never thought of that even
12:31probably the year prior to that for the first time in the history of our broadcast women will be the
12:37final most suspenseful most important act yep we've had so many first now that it's now common to see
12:45certain shows where the women are the main focal point of the main storyline how does that make you
12:51feel well i say that like nonchalantly but i still fight for that because it's not a given unfortunately
12:58like the women's division just isn't as big or doesn't have as much depth as the men's division
13:05what's left for you to do well selfishly i am so close to 16. what is 60. my dad is
13:14known
13:15as a 16-time world heavyweight champion and i guess selfishly for me i'm so close how many are you
13:23i'm at 14.
13:24you're 14. yeah i think you're not the only one that wants to see an accomplishment like that with
13:29your name on it why do you say selfishly there's so many layers to it like to know what my
13:35dad means
13:36to the industry and then to even be talked about in that category was just like mind-boggling and then
13:45the likes of john cena randy orton triple h my dad but being a female like there's no greater honor
13:54in our like our business like you're being talked about with the greats but as a woman i want the
14:00world to see what i've accomplished here for women like i never said this to my dad but like that
14:05box
14:06with you guys and the and with the action figures i'm like i'm in there not him the kids don't
14:10come to
14:10see me at shows because of him they come to see me because of me like some of them don't
14:15even know
14:16who he is what i'm hearing is possibly the reason for the selfish comment is 16 means to you that
14:25we've earned the right to be you and not someone's daughter kind of i know that a number would change
14:30that but it's still like surreal to me i don't take it for granted
14:44so now we're like parked right in front of physical therapy and i'm not gonna go in yet
14:49because the show is called what drives you and you are so driven you are so accomplished you are so
14:57beautiful and smart what drives you thanks john um my little brother's dream opened so many doors
15:08when i spent so long trying to save his life he ultimately saved mine and now it's that like
15:15inner fire for what i do like i really do love like being in that ring thank you for sharing
15:23all
15:23that stuff uh let's go in and do some nice things okay why do you go to physical therapy and
15:33heels i
15:34really just wanted to look cute when you open the door that warms my heart thank you
15:45you know john yeah okay thanks so much for your time yeah sure welcome what did you do if you
15:53don't
15:53mind sharing full acl bruising on my mcl and they only shaved down my meniscus gotcha so seven weeks
16:10post-surgery how do you feel the patient is doing she's killing it well i don't want to get in
16:15the
16:15way of the work let's get to work okay let's hop up on the table over here
16:21so i know that you say the injury has been a challenge hopefully people can see you go through
16:26this and know the sacrifice because we deal with this all the time i thought it was all just fake
16:32this is a very very real situation this is my money maker and when i first got hurt the only
16:41thing
16:41i kept going through my mind was like what if i can't be the charlotte that they're used to
16:45when i go back all i can think about is i have to be what they are used to when
16:51i go back do you
16:53i want to be better okay and it happened at tribute to the troops and that was i mean live
17:02and i just
17:03couldn't stop did you finish the performance yeah what the you have 300 soldiers behind you watching
17:15you yeah can't be a baby and not finish my match that's got goosebumps wow
17:29i'm gonna have you go on the bike okay just short quick five or six minutes okay and then we'll
17:34come
17:34back here and start work awesome let's go bike
17:41what do you do to warm up usually uh i don't know a little bit of bike a little bit
17:45of this a little
17:46bit of that
17:49so the first two weeks i couldn't even bend my knee to do it but now it's going man you
17:56had some great
17:56moments in this building right yeah you kind of brought the wwe into this thing i remember being in
18:04there when we had promo class in there before it was the the arena the arena the first promo i
18:10ever cut
18:10was some promo about being the top of the mountain the irony i remember like it was yesterday
18:27okay so we're using a balance board to show that she's not compensating too much because if she was
18:32putting more weight on her non-surgical side the board would tip
18:40see your lower back flexibility there's nothing down there it's all gelatin show off
18:46you see his chest is up yeah some more elements mine's bigger that's why
18:51have you always had that range of motion there is that because you're such a good snatch
19:00well thank you i shaved
19:06okay i love this place for so many reasons and i know you have history here what i love most
19:14is how
19:15you set it up because you come into this room to graduate to that room to graduate to the next
19:21room
19:31and now now there's this
19:41seeing this how does this make you feel i'm so proud to be a success story from here
19:47mm-hmm in an ideal scenario what's the timeline to get you back in here i think just mentally i
19:54want
19:54to have it in my mind that like i am prepared to be where i'm at physically at six months
19:59i want to
20:00come back conditioned that was a major mistake i made in 2008 i came back when i was when i
20:05was fine
20:05but i wasn't conditioned how long did it take you to not long yeah that's what i'm gonna say it's
20:10just
20:10that one match i was lucky i was lucky uh i love being in here but i know you also
20:18need to be in
20:18there you've done so well with your rehab and man i loved our conversation i can't wait until the next
20:24time
20:24thank you so much for today
20:44charlotte flair is tough both physically and mentally i really admire her
20:50outside of being an icon in the wwe what i really like is she's actually very humble and down to
20:56earth the range rover is a car she's loved since she was a kid and it's fun to see her
21:02continue to
21:02drive one it makes sense they're both exceptionally strong and i wish her continued success on the road to
21:09recovery and with that welcome to a place that drives me my garage this is a replica of a 1966
21:27jaguar
21:29xj13 the story behind the car is amazing they built one and they built it to test it so they
21:34brought it
21:35out of storage and crashed it and it was ruined and jaguar had to spend a ton of money to
21:41make a
21:42second xj13 that car currently sits in the british motoring museum the design of this car is captivating
21:49it's undeniably jaguar it's specially e-type and when you open the door to get in you realize there's
21:56no steering wheel that's because it was converted to right hand drive which i absolutely love i look
22:02ridiculous driving this car because my head sticks out of this thing see what i mean we're gonna try
22:11to get this thing opened up it does not want to behave and i like it now i know why
22:18they crashed the
22:18original she's a tough son of a bitch to wrangle you're kind of on the high rough seas in the
22:24dinghy
22:24this is dangerous fun and as you can see my head sticks out of the top but sometimes you got
22:33to
22:33ask yourself is the juice worth the squeeze in this case i'd say yes because look at it it's beautiful
22:40i like the fact that you got to earn it and you got to listen to the music of the
22:44engine because it
22:46is a fun drive when you get in the symphony to play together so until next time this is john
22:53cena reminding
22:55you to never stop asking yourself what drives you
23:27you
