00:00President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping holding their highly anticipated summit in Beijing
00:04on May 14th to 15th. That's according to what we got from the U.S. side. But let's get more
00:09with our chief North Asia correspondent Stephen Engel who joins us live from Hainan Island
00:13where the Boa Forum is underway. So Steve, yeah, I mean we finally got this date. Is it one that
00:18they're going to definitely stick to do you think? That's anyone's guess right now. Obviously we don't
00:27have an off-ramp completely in the war in the Middle East. We do not have confirmation yet from
00:32the Chinese side that those are the dates, May 14th to 15th. It makes sense though. It buys the United
00:38States a little bit more time of course to wind, potentially wind the war down because everybody
00:43I've spoken to say this summit between Xi and Trump will very unlikely happen while the war is still
00:50raging in the Middle East because that pretty much would overshadow any deliverables that Xi Jinping
00:55could trumpet from that meeting with Trump, excuse the pun, and also the same for Donald Trump. He
01:01wants this to be a successful summit. I spoke with the former U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez
01:08yesterday here on the sides of the Boa Forum. He was the Commerce Secretary during the Bush years. He was
01:14confident that the two leaders will send a positive signal to the global economy, that the two biggest,
01:21the leaders of the two biggest economies in the world can find some common ground and solidify that
01:27truce that was a was not necessarily guaranteed to be a lasting truce. So we'll have to see whether
01:34this meeting goes forward. We'll have to see over the next three weeks or so whether the war can wind
01:39down to allow them to have this meeting face to face, no doubt. One of the subjects that will probably
01:45not be
01:46discussed, according to China's climate envoy, Ambassador Liu, who told me yesterday he does
01:51not expect climate change to be anywhere near or even on the agenda between the two leaders because
01:58essentially Donald Trump has unwound a lot of the previous administration's efforts on climate change
02:04and not participating in COP 30, COP 31 and the like. I did speak with Ambassador Liu yesterday and he
02:11said
02:11zero contact so far with the Trump administration version 2.0.
