20:34to the modal dfc's uh returning like you saw with roan and will we have two new mechanics we're
20:40introducing with strixhaven the first of the new mechanics i want to talk about is magecraft
20:45yeah magecraft it's a really great mechanic and the reason we brought magecraft into strixhaven
20:51was strixhaven's a world all about spells and magecraft rewards you for casting or copying
20:58instants and sorceries so magecraft is a great fit yeah that sounds very fitting obviously lots of
21:04mages lots of spells and lots of power yeah exactly the magecraft mechanic it's set up that whenever
21:10you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell you get a bonus like a counter life gain extra abilities
21:17hey let's take a look at an example this is dragon's guard elite dragon's guard elite one in a green
21:22for
21:22a 2-2 creature human druid magecraft whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell
21:27for the plus one plus one counter on dragon's guard elite pay for green green double the number of
21:32plus one plus one counters on dragon's guard elite very nice oh i'm sure you love seeing a pushed
21:37two drop don't you this is pretty interesting here we haven't seen the cast or copy text in a while
21:43have we yeah that's one of the ways we really made magecraft special is you both get the bonus when
21:50you cast the instant or sorcery or when you copy it so if you happen to be playing a storm
21:54deck
21:55you can get lots and lots of magecraft triggers hey don't encourage anyone mike
21:59and dragon's guard elite it's also the buy a box promo for strixhaven the promo has an alt art
22:05and is in foil with that extended art frame so early applicants you should apply at your local game store
22:12not a bad idea so the dragon's guard elite's uh really awesome but let's check out another example
22:17of magecraft this is archmage emeritus archmage emeritus two blue blue for a two two creature
22:24human wizard magecraft whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell draw a card and so here
22:31you get to draw more cards and what are you going to draw when you're getting those magecraft triggers
22:36probably more instants and sorceries how about drawing all those cards yeah this is great and
22:42there's no limit to it so i guess we really are encouraging people to play storm these days
22:47right you just draw as much as you want just to make sure to stop before you draw your whole
22:52library
22:52good call good call and the archmage emeritus has a bundle promo uh which is foil and alt art also
22:58nice i love these alt arts especially because you know as a commander player you always want to choose
23:03the version that best fits your deck and how it looks yeah that that's exactly it we love giving those
23:09fun collectible variants so that way you can build a deck and really bling it out to make it you
23:15know
23:15special and customized just for you yeah absolutely and let me show you one one more uh this is the
23:20eager first year eager first year one in a white for a two two creature human wizard another great two
23:26drop here the eager first year gets a power bonus whenever you cast an instant or sorcery or copy it
23:32so if you take a look at that art that little bobble that's floating in her hand as a first
23:38year
23:38that's the only spell she knows but i expect her to to level up pretty fast at uh strixhaven
23:44yeah i love it when you get to see the limited versions of a new mechanic all the way up
23:50to
23:50sort of the competitive playable versions in other formats so that's great to see
23:53so the second new mechanic we're introducing in strixhaven also highlights the element of school
23:58and it's called learn so the way that learn works is it pairs up with a lesson card you take
24:05a lesson
24:05card from outside the game and put it into your hand or if you want you can just discard a
24:10card
24:10and draw a card instead if uh there's no lesson that's really appealing to you so let's take a
24:15look at the learn keyword here with the professor of symbology professor of symbology one in the white
24:21for a two one creature core cleric when professor of symbology enters the battlefield learn you may
24:27reveal a lesson card you own from outside the game and put it into your hand or discard a card
24:32to draw a
24:33the professor she's teaching her lore hold students a lesson and so in this case we're
24:38gonna go and fetch out uh pest summoning pest summoning sorcery lesson create two one one black
24:45and green pest creature tokens with when this creature dies you gain one life you get a nice
24:51creature and then you can go and fetch and get some one ones that'll give you a little bit of
24:56a life
24:56bonus pretty adorable art too huh yeah yeah this is really interesting because the idea of
25:03learning is you're teaching something to someone and you're pulling the knowledge out of your head
25:07kind of like you're grabbing it from outside the game and you put the card in your hand that's that's
25:12amazing that's great value exactly right jimmy learn and lesson of course strixhaven university
25:17it just pairs so well right hey you're here to accumulate knowledge and let's go and find the exact
25:24lesson uh that fits it's a ton of fun to to both draft and playing constructed because there's just that
25:31really fun puzzle of hey what card do i want to go and and get this time right right let's
25:37take a look
25:37at a a few more lesson and learn cards uh here's pop quiz pop quiz two in the blue for
25:44an instant
25:44draw a card okay so pop quiz this person is clearly struggling with something here but they get a draw
25:51card at instant speed and then learn but let's say you don't have a lesson then this card just reads
25:56draw a card and then discard to draw another card that's exactly it on those rare cases that the
26:02the lesson that you'd be fetching isn't what you wanted you can just dig into your deck a little bit
26:07more it's sort of the backup plan because typically you're going to be having a lesson that you can go
26:14and learn for right absolutely and then confront the past x and a black for a sorcery lesson choose one
26:20return target planeswalker card with mana value x or less from your graveyard to the battlefield
26:26or remove twice x loyalty counters from target planeswalker and opponent controls for our fellow
26:32vorthos players this is a very significant moment that liliana seems to be embracing here or looking
26:39into the mirror of and this is just packed with value too yeah absolutely you know she's remembering that
26:44moment where gideon reached out and and saved her you can see that there in the in the art and
26:49then yes
26:49for those who are actually casting the spell it it does an awful lot right yeah i don't think we've
26:55seen that sort of direct from graveyard to battlefield individual planeswalker especially with an x cast in
27:00it too that's really interesting yeah absolutely and then the second part you know you can use that to
27:05remove one of your opponent's planeswalkers pretty effectively yeah it's like two sides of the mirror
27:09right yeah that's exactly it you see that in the art you see that in the mechanics we always try
27:14to bring
27:15uh fun resident mechanics into our worlds and learn lesson uh really lets us amplify that
27:21yeah that's really neat i'm super excited for this i just love being able to do stuff that seems like
27:26it's like wow of course you should be able to do something like that in magic so thanks so much

27:53representatives from each college will join this afternoon 118 of wadsworth hall as a reminder
27:59wadsworth hall is located on the northwest corner of the southernmost eastern quad they're going to be there

28:13as we mentioned earlier strixhaven is divided into five unique colleges and here to explain the
28:18intricacies of all of them is doug buyer hey doug how's it going hey jimmy how are you liking
28:22strixhaven so far i am loving it but i'm not gonna lie i'm a little intimidated five completely different
28:28schools so many details i don't know can you tell me a little bit more i feel like i got
28:31a big decision
28:32ahead of me you sure do but uh don't worry there isn't a right or wrong choice here it's more
28:37about
28:37finding what best suits your style so five colleges of strixhaven are called lower hold prismari
28:43quandrix silver quill and witherbloom each college is associated with an enemy two color pair
28:49and they each have their own campus faculty magical specialties identity logos mascots
28:56okay wow this is pretty in-depth it's like a real school yeah the the each each college is unique
29:02and you'll see representations of them throughout the entire set that expresses that identity you're
29:07gonna find card cycles that are specific to colleges and each card that's associated with
29:11the college has its own logo watermark like you see here on pest summoning that makes perfect sense
29:18so each college is tied to a color pair and they have their own flavor of magic to go along
29:22with it
29:22yeah you got it so there's also five commander decks with strixhaven and each align with a college
29:27see there's an intense rivalry between these colleges and they get to battle it out with each
29:31other in magical duels it's part of strixhaven's special sport called mage tower
29:36wait hold on you gotta tell me more about mage tower that sounds amazing
29:40all right the rules of mage tower are simple there's two opposing teams they meet in the school's large
29:45stadium alongside their mascots there's three phases of play so each mascot sits on top of that giant
29:50mage tower and then the goal is to steal the other team's mascot and transport it over to your side
29:56the thing is all magic is legal except any magic that would physically harm a player or a mascot or
30:02somebody in the stands or the stadium but other than that so each phase is 20 minutes long and then
30:07a winner is declared wow i love that i mean that's like why don't we just change all friday night
30:12magic
30:12just to be mage tower instead that's right we're going for that classic feeling of like school pride
30:18and classmate camaraderie okay well with all this information i am definitely ready to sign up but
30:24i still have to figure out which college matches me the best so let's go through them sure thing
30:29i've actually got a few videos for you to check out let's start with lorehold
30:35lorehold is the college comprised of diligent researchers
30:38and daring adventurers passionate scholars obsessed with history who explore the past by pouring over
30:45archaeological artifacts and summoning long dead spirits for some students the past is a rich
30:51tapestry worthy of disciplined study while others wear that tapestry like a cap as they jump down
30:57into a forgotten tomb lorehold leave no stone unturned
31:05all right i'm in daring adventures archaeologists reminds me a bit of another famous professor i know
31:11but you know what sign me up for lorehold okay okay hold on don't you want to hear a little
31:16bit
31:16more about lorehold first yes that's probably a good idea i am very impressionable so what else can
31:21you tell me all right so lorehold is the college of archaeomancy it's represented by the colors red and
31:26white and its mascots the spirits so here let's take a look at some cards to give you a better
31:30sense of
31:31the college first up lorehold apprentice wow very nice it almost looks like she is playing with a saga
31:37here in front of us that's great i love that art yeah the lorehold use their magic to bring
31:42history literally to life so they summon ancient figures from the past and bring them into the present
31:46so next we have some awesome artwork for you to check out this one for the legendary creature
31:51velomachus lorehold velomachus is the dragon founder of lorehold college all the dragon founders
31:56including velomachus come in their standard frame and an alt art borderless version the borderless
32:02version is great actually reminds me of a bit of older magic while the standard one reminds me of
32:06newer magic so that's awesome and in both his designs you can see those scrolls that are hanging
32:10down from his body that's an indication of the lore that he's literally holding in his body oh very
32:16thematic i like it and i can show you the commander for the lowerhold strigshaven deck this is
32:21osgir the reconstructor osgir the reconstructor okay this is what i'm talking about here i love that
32:27boros is getting more value-based tactics and having to be artifact based in a archaeology type
32:33school this is perfect i love it i don't know what you mean by what's this is lorehold i'm so
32:39sorry
32:40i'm so sorry lorehold many apologies doug well i love what i see so far and but you're right i
32:47should
32:47get some information about the other schools before i make a decision so what are we going to hear about
32:51next all right next up is prismari prismari are the art club members of strigshaven and magic is how
32:59they express themselves their spells can be spectacles of raw creativity or meticulous artistic
33:04expressions all the world's a stage whether their art is informed by mind or emotion prismari always
33:15leave a lasting impression prismari express yourself with the elements
33:23oh prismari here i come you know deep inside i am a theater kid i know you have a flare
33:29for the
33:29dramatic jimmy so prismari might be for you they are the college of elemental arts represented by the
33:35colors red and blue along with their mascot the elementals let's take a look at some prismari cards
33:40here first up here is prismari apprentice wow i love the art on this you clearly see this mage
33:47controlling the red and blue sides of the school we really wanted to show off the opposites that are
33:52built into the enemy color combinations in strigshaven and prismari especially has this like fire and ice
33:57combination going on yeah that's fantastic and then we have storm kiln artist hey i was wondering if
34:03dwarves are going to be showing up on this plane it looks like i have my answer here not to
34:07mention
34:07treasure tokens one of my favorite mechanics in magic treasure tokens kind of represent the
34:12artistic creations of the prismari that's kind of a physical manifestation of their magic and here is
34:19the dragon founder of this college galazeth prismari you would call this a very epic pose the red and
34:24blue colors here just really pull out what's happening in the middle of the art all the colleges are based
34:29around the the magical ethos of their founder dragon and galazeth prismari has a flair for the dramatic he
34:35has a flair for the kind of intimidating with the borderless art which i love seeing space dragon
34:42and lastly the commander for the prismari strixhaven deck zafai thunder conductor wow okay this guy
34:48definitely went to drama school or some sort of artistic school i also really love in the art how
34:54the blue is coming out of the stringed instruments and the red is coming out of the horns that's like
34:58a
34:59great detail there we call that a double major
35:03now before you make up your mind again we still got three more colleges to look at so let's check
35:08out quandrix all right
35:13quandrix mages are ingenious math magicians
35:17they study patterns fractals and symmetries to command power over the fundamental forces of nature
35:26they'll solve a rubik's cube while proving that dullard div mizzet second theorem completely wrong
35:35quandrix math is magic
35:41wow you know what i think i could really see myself in quandrix because i love math not hard math
35:47math is
35:48for blockers infinite combos all that good stuff so you think i'm ready for quandrix well they do
35:53have a dragon
35:56and quandrix is the college of numeromancy represented by the colors blue and green and their
36:02mascot the fractals as you'll see here with quandrix apprentice oh very nice the search for
36:08knowledge you can really feel the mages at the school learning and studying and then turning that
36:13into magic cards that's a lot of fun right the quandrix are studying to uncover the numbers
36:17underneath reality and let's take a look at the dragon founder of this college here's the art of
36:22tenazir quandrix whoa this is gorgeous and i love the little easter egg in the middle here which is
36:29an impossible shape but because magic is filled with art you can draw these figures and it's great
36:34to look at because i think that's like a perfect example of what quandrix is about right like
36:38it shouldn't work but it clearly does yeah use optical illusions and these like you said impossible
36:43polygons to kind of get across that they are hacking at the very nature of reality itself yeah it seems
36:50pretty powerful to be expected of anything with the color blue after all and then the borderless
36:55art as well i love when you include these like really strong lines on top of the dragon on and
37:00underneath it it just gives it such a dynamic feel it's almost a diagram of a dragon and we get
37:05to
37:05see another commander this time for the quandrix strixhaven deck check out adrix and neve twin casters
37:11very exciting as a commander player myself also looks like we might have a little bit of a tease here
37:16for a new keyword mechanic that will be in the commander deck so that's really cool players get
37:22excited well this is a new ability to help protect your most valuable creatures that makes sense too
37:27right you can't attack us unless you're paying more mana seems like they've outsmarted you or they're
37:32able to dodge whatever you're doing and you have to pay a tax on top of that wow okay well
37:36the choice
37:36of colleges it just seems to be getting harder and harder and we still have two more to go
37:40that's right and next up we have the college of silver quill silver quills wield the magic of words
37:47from inspiring battle poetry to biting arcane insults stylish intimidating and tirelessly competitive
37:57these mages are born leaders with a razor sharp wit and natural charisma that can be used for good or
38:05for
38:16you know i do love giving speeches and i've been known to bust a rhyme or two out in my
38:21day i might
38:22just be a silver quill man well yes so silver quill is the college of eloquence and they are represented
38:28by the colors black and white and their mascot is a creature called the inklings check out silver
38:34quill apprentice wow this is some pretty cool art here it definitely has this whole vibe and feel
38:40to it i also love that people are watching it happen which feels very silver quill the silver
38:45quill love and audience they are about performance and turning that performance into their magic
38:51this may be the place for me we have another dragon founder let's look at the art of shadrick's
38:57silver quill wow you know what i really love about this piece is that it almost looks like the
39:04dragon's actions are painting the landscape with that dark sort of misty color yeah that's that's
39:10kind of the expression of the light and darkness of silver quill and the this flowing magical ink
39:15that's through a lot of their magic that's awesome and then this borderless art is something
39:20i would 100 just hang up on my wall it's great i love how it starts really bright at the
39:25top and just
39:26has the full spectrum of white and black it turns out that artists get really excited when we tell them
39:30this is a study in ink which is a medium you already use yeah no kidding and it just brings
39:35out it evokes an entirely different mood so that's great silver quill really feels
39:39really unique in that fashion and yes we do have another commander this is brina the demagogue the
39:45commander for the silver quill strixhaven deck again commanding an audience and amazing too because
39:51it really feels in flavor when your opponents are attacking each other you're the one that gets the
39:55benefit off of it too and brina is an aven i think this is the first time in magic we
39:59have a bird
40:00warlock as its title really okay perfect okay well just one more college to go then i can finally
40:06make my decision right yes and the last college is witherbloom okay witherblooms are the goth
40:15bio majors of strixhaven they draw power from the essence of living beings
40:21whether that means enhancing nature or exploiting it witherbloom mages are most at home riding zombie
40:29crocs picking herbs for potions and hanging out in their swamp making grim jokes
40:38witherbloom get your hands dirty
40:45well fifth time's the charm they say i do love the outdoors and i don't mind getting my hands a
40:51little dirty what else is there to know well the witherbloom are the college of essence studies
40:56represented by the colors green and black and their mascots the pests let's look at witherbloom
41:01apprentice okay this art is fantastic and i love how you literally can see and feel the effects of both
41:08parts of the name wither and bloom right there in the art these are kind of the pre-med of
41:13strixhaven
41:13and uh this is why you go pre-med right is to is the power over life and death right
41:18yeah and to just
41:19be able to mix stuff together and see what happens and let's look at the art of the final dragon
41:24founder
41:24belladros witherbloom okay this is a nefarious looking founder here and if i had to guess two colors
41:32black and green seems perfect yeah we really played up the internal lighting in the environment
41:37and in the dragon belladros witherbloom yeah and i love how you can really see more details in the
41:43borderless art of whatever's hanging out inside those trees that glowing stuff it just makes me
41:48feel like there's a project or something going on inside those are actually classrooms of for the
41:53witherbloom college oh awesome oh man this is making the choice even harder and i have one last
41:59commander to show you this is willow dusk essence seer she's the commander for the witherbloom
42:04strixhaven deck again i have to give the kudos to the art here i love just this sort of magic
42:10that's
42:10her coming out of the ground the earth the alchemy everything that's going on here just feels perfectly
42:16black green she's very witchy the these are our kind of bio goths of the university so they are using
42:24magic over death and life okay well we saw all five i thought the choice would be easier turns out
42:31it's even harder than before i'm officially stumped is there anything else i should look at before i
42:36consider my final decision well you could also check out the cycle of dual lands check out the new
42:41lands each of these lands tap for two colors of mana and if you meet the requirements on the card
42:45then
42:46they enter the battlefield untapped five colleges are also represented here on the snarls oh amazing
42:52yes and each of these again like the all of the art of the schools i love so much because
42:56it really
42:57brings out the color pairings and you can see it right here in the lands as well the snarls are
43:01places where two opposing forces of mana come together and swirl in this gnashing pattern like
43:08this that's great i love the word snarl too well doug i've got a lot to think about so i
43:14think i
43:14actually just need a little bit more time before i sign on to one of these colleges that's totally
