00:14In Mexico, the Spring and Ornamental Flower Festival 2026 strengthened bonds between the
00:19community and local biodiversity with gigantic flower sculpture of Teporingos.
00:28In Mexico City, the Spring and Ornamental Flower Festival was held with a series of
00:33giant sculptures shaped like the Teporingo, a small native rabbit in danger of extinction.
00:40We are welcoming spring, bringing flowers from conservation into the heart of the city,
00:45and here we see Teporingos, two small ones and one monumental, made of flowers.
00:49Why did we choose Teporingos? Because Teporingos are an endemic animal of this area,
00:55of the volcanic region of Mexico City, which it shares with the state of Mexico and Morelos.
01:00It is an endangered species that lives in mountainous areas.
01:07This species faces several threats, including predators, urban expansion, deforestation,
01:13and other issues that have reduced its habitat and caused a decline in its numbers.
01:17The delicate floral pieces were created with the aim of highlighting the Teporingo,
01:22as a symbol of the city, promoting local products, and positioning the city,
01:26as a leader in the protection of native species.
01:31We want to highlight them because they are a species that identifies us as Chulangos,
01:36it is something that defines us and does not exist anywhere else in the world,
01:39or anywhere else in the country. So here, in downtown Mexico City,
01:44this is a tribute to the Teporingos and to the biodiversity of the city's conservation lands.
01:52The event was part of a broader government strategy aimed at highlighting the importance
01:57of conservation land as a source of resources. Each flower and plant displayed during the activities
02:02was a reflection of the effort of families dedicated to floriculture, who keep agricultural
02:07and ornamental production active in the conservation area.
02:12It is very important that they celebrate this kind of festival because we have seen that flower
02:16prices are very affordable, in some cases even cheaper than in Xochimilco, and they are often
02:21more expensive due to transportation, so it is worth coming, buying, and promoting this for both
02:27national and international tourism. With the participation of more than 50 producers from
02:34Xochimilco and Tlachuec, and more than 10,000 plant species, the Spring and Ornamental Flower Festival,
02:412026, established itself as a meeting space between producers, citizens, and nature, in the heart of Mexico City.
