00:22Selamat pagi
00:40Kini menjadi perhatian ramai
00:42Beliau sedang menjayakan larian sejauh 2,200km
00:46Berentasi Semenanjung Malaysia
00:58Selepas pemergian isteri tersinta Jo Lee akibat kanser
01:19Inspirasi Run for Gold
01:25Dengan itu saya ucapkan good morning to Mr. SG
01:29Good morning, good morning everyone
01:31Yeah, so maybe for us to start off
01:35Maybe you could share what is the main purpose behind the project of Run for Gold
01:43Okay, thank you very much for having me
01:47Many people ask me why it's Run for Gold
01:51And the reason why it's Run for Gold is because gold represent the golden ribbon represent children with cancer
01:59So that's the colour of gold
02:02So that's the colour of gold
02:02And that's why I call it Run for Gold
02:04So I'm running for the children with cancer
02:08And my aim is to raise funds to help the children with cancer battle against cancer
02:16So that's my main aim
02:18And I'm working in conjunction with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia
02:24In terms of the coordination and all the benefits will go to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia for the
02:31children with cancer
02:34And maybe for a little bit of background context
02:37Like how did it came up to you to do this project which is running for about 2,200 kilometers
02:47For you to, you know, gain support for these children with cancer
02:53Okay, I will try to explain this in Bahasa Malaysia if you don't mind
02:59Yeah, I and my sister Julie have one intention for one day
03:05After I was born, I was born to go to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia
03:11With walking on your feet together
03:12Like walking on your feet, walking on your feet, walking on your feet
03:18With the 11 countries and the region of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia
03:22Malangnya, my sister, August 2021
03:27I died in the years of 2021
03:30Ma méthaneca, Carolina, coming on my back
03:34At the board of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia
03:35At the time of 2018, I died in above 95
03:39After the loss of July, July
03:42I felt like I used to defeating ourselves here
03:47I didn't just as though
03:47It wasn't as onlyador doesn'tПela
03:50But I was born with orangLove
03:52But I was born to fix every day
03:55So that's my aims
04:22hanya mempunyai 4 bulan sebelum dia berjalan.
04:25Jadi saya sentiasa mengucapkan orang, jika anda mempunyai kancers,
04:29jika anda mempunyai kancers.
06:12Penang Home of Hope,
06:14yang adalah rumah untuk kancers dengan kancers,
06:17ini baru baru terbuka setiap Februari.
06:19Jadi ini cukup baru dan sangat terjaya.
06:22Banyak orang tahu tentang rumah ini.
06:25Dan rumah ini dipercaya oleh penyakit,
06:31sehingga penyakit untuk makanan,
06:33dan untuk bahan-bahan dan sebagian,
06:35untuk kancers, untuk makanan untuk memasak dan sebagainya,
06:38semuanya berdasarkan penyakit.
06:40Jadi saya ingin melakukannya di Penang
06:44untuk memberi orang tahu
06:46bahawa ada rumah yang seperti di Penang
06:48di mana mereka mempunyai anak-anak dengan kancers
06:51yang dipercaya di hospital.
06:53Jadi itu adalah sebab utama.
06:55Tapi tentu saja saya di Penang,
06:57jadi saya lebih suka memulakan dari Penang.
06:59Ya, dan mungkin selain dari
07:02peluang ini,
07:06selain dari peluang,
07:07apa lagi aktiviti yang dipercaya oleh
07:10peluang untuk peluang,
07:11selain dari peluang?
07:14Oh, yes.
07:17I'm not a big runner,
07:19but apart from running,
07:21there's a lot of other organisations
07:23to be done.
07:25Liasing with the National Cancer Society
07:26for this event is one of them.
07:28and also lobbying for people to support my course.
07:34So I talked to some organisation,
07:36for example,
07:38a sports apparel provider
07:41provided me with the shoes and the apparel.
07:44But what I wanted more is for them to
07:47participate in a bigger way,
07:49like get their run clubs to run with us
07:52and so on.
07:52So I have to coordinate with these people as well.
07:56The supporters of the Run For Goal
07:59and also there's a lot of organisation
08:01in terms of the route planning
08:02and where I'm going to stay and so on.
08:04So we did a recce for five days
08:06to see where are the difficult spots.
08:10Obviously the big difficult spot is
08:12from the West Highway to East West Highway,
08:15where there's very isolated and hilly.
08:17We even saw some elephants when we were there
08:19the last time.
08:20So it will be interesting if we see
08:21any more elephants.
08:22So helping,
08:25all the work is coordinated.
08:27I've been on a lot of media programmes
08:30on TV, on radio and on internet media
08:33to conduct interviews
08:35to promote this course in a bigger way.
08:38So I'm very happy that the media
08:40is helping with this course
08:44because it's very important to share
08:46this course to as many people as possible.
08:49And hopefully,
08:52besides sharing,
08:54people will open up their wallet
08:55and donate
08:56to help children with cancer.
09:00Yeah.
09:01And so far,
09:02how is the participation for this program?
09:05How many people are joining you for the Run
09:07and how many have been collected so far?
09:11Okay.
09:12So far,
09:13from the GIF.Asia website,
09:17I think we have collected
09:18about 60,000 ringgit,
09:21which is very good
09:25because I haven't started running it.
09:27And the people that are joining me,
09:29there is no registration.
09:31As I run along,
09:33people can join me at any time.
09:34So if you look at the Run4Go website,
09:38Run4Go.my,
09:39you will see a live tracking position
09:44of where I am.
09:45So anybody can come along and join me along the way.
09:50But in the meantime,
09:51we are also contacting a lot of run clubs
09:52and a lot of run clubs are also contacting us,
09:55wanting to participate.
09:57So as I run along,
09:58I think there will be more participation coming on.
10:01There is no registration needed.
10:02So people just come and join me as I run along.
10:04And I would love to have people running with me.
10:07Yeah.
10:08And we hope like maybe I can join as well
10:09when you run later.
10:11But you know,
10:12being knowing that you are 66 years old,
10:16running for 2,200 kilometers,
10:19even for me as young as me,
10:20I couldn't prepare and also maybe complete the run.
10:23So maybe how you as someone who in that age
10:28prepare to mentally and physically
10:30for a challenge of this big of a scale?
10:35Okay.
10:36I am quite a regular runner in the last 10 years or so,
10:40but the longest I've done is half marathon,
10:4331 kilometers.
10:45And I usually train for that like 10 to 12 weeks
10:47to train for that.
10:48So this particular challenge,
10:51I started training about nine months ago,
10:55building up strength on my legs and endurance.
10:59There are three things that I train for mainly,
11:02particularly.
11:03I've got to train to wake up very early.
11:05The reason for that is because I need to run early,
11:09like 5.30 in the morning,
11:10because it gets too hot in the afternoon.
11:14So I plan to run say from 5.30 to about noon
11:18and stop running because it gets too hot.
11:20So waking up early,
11:21training and running in the morning,
11:23putting your blinkers on and lights on,
11:26avoiding the traffic,
11:27those are part of the training.
11:28The second part of training is the heat training.
11:32Because by 10 to 11 o'clock,
11:34it gets very, very hot.
11:35So purposely I run around 10 to 11 to make sure
11:39that I can stand the heat,
11:42the high temperature in Malaysia.
11:44So those are the two things that I train for.
11:47The third thing I need to train is to strengthen my legs.
11:50So I go to the gym once a week at least to do weights,
11:54to do lunges and so on to strengthen my legs.
11:56So those are the more three things that I train for.
12:00But the most important thing is to feed on the ground.
12:03Keep doing the kilometers.
12:05So some days I do 10,
12:06some days I do 15 in the day.
12:08And for long run, I might do a 30 kilometer run.
12:11So that's the kind of training I've been doing for the last nine months.
12:15And we know that this project will be starting in around three days.
12:20we'll start at 28 of March.
12:22But how would you say that,
12:25how would you guess on how long would it take to complete the 2,200 kilometers?
12:30Because it's quite a long run.
12:32So maybe how long would it take for you?
12:35Based on our schedule which is available on our website,
12:38I will take exactly 84 days to complete this exercise.
12:46So the plan is to run 3 to 4 days,
12:4825 to 35 kilometers a day.
12:51And I will have a rest day for one day.
12:54And then I carry on and carry on.
12:56And the rest day is interesting
12:58because we're going to have activities
13:00that the National Cancer Society has arranged
13:02or the run clubs has arranged.
13:04So there will be a lot of activities as I go along the road.
13:07Besides running, there will be a lot of activities
13:09that we will also organize.
13:12So the running will take 84 days.
13:14And I start on the 28th of March.
13:17and I plan to finish on the 21st of June,
13:21back in Penang.
13:23Because on the 22nd of June, I turned 67.
13:27So that's my personal target,
13:29to finish this before I turn 67.
13:33Yeah, and we hope that you could finish it
13:35before you turn on your birthday later.
13:37So I think there's a lot more we can talk about on this topic.
13:41But we have to take a break for a while.
13:43And we will see you after this break.
13:59All right, we are back in Awali Pagi.
14:01To those who are just tuning in,
14:02first and foremost,
14:03and this morning we are just talking about a project called Run For Goal,
14:09which is a project for children with cancer,
14:12a support project for them.
14:14And we are talking with Mr. Lim Xiang Gui or Mr. SG,
14:18an activist and also a runner of this program.
14:21And we are talking about, just before the break,
14:24we talked about what is this program's purpose
14:26and what inspired Mr. SG to conduct this program.
14:30Now maybe we want to talk about a bit about fundraising
14:33because fundraising is a key element when we talk about
14:36supporting people with medical issues
14:40or to donate some money to people in need.
14:44Maybe to Mr. SG, in your perspective,
14:48why is fundraising really important,
14:51especially for this Run For Goal project?
14:56Okay.
14:58Why is fundraising really important?
15:00And why I specifically fundraise for children with cancer?
15:05I had the opportunity to visit the National Cancer Society's
15:09facilities in KL.
15:11And in the facilities,
15:14they have this place called the Home of Hope.
15:17And the Home of Hope is a place where
15:20the National Cancer Society provides accommodation
15:24for the children with cancer,
15:26plus their caregiver, usually the mother,
15:29and also provide the ingredients and food supply
15:32for them to cook for both the children and the mother.
15:36And these children come from rural Malaysia.
15:40They are mainly from the B40 household.
15:44and for them to come to get treated in the public hospital
15:49is usually provided for by the government.
15:52What they can't afford is the high cost of living in KL,
15:56in Penang, where the treatment facilities are based.
15:59So the National Cancer Society provides these facilities
16:03accommodation, food, and all the necessary supply for them.
16:09So this is very important because most of these children with cancer
16:14from rural areas don't get treatment because they can't afford to live
16:18in the biggest city of KL and Penang.
16:22And I saw the need for that.
16:24And I saw that the National Cancer Society is providing a service
16:29that fill this need.
16:31And that's why I chose children with cancer.
16:35And it's important to fundraise because these are all funded by public donation.
16:40A National Cancer Society is funded mainly by donation.
16:44And the more people know about the plight of the cancer patient
16:49and the caregiver, I think the more people are sympathetic
16:52and it's important for me to promote kindness among us Malaysians.
16:59Whether you are rich or poor, it doesn't matter.
17:03As long as you have the will and desire to help somebody,
17:06small amount helps, big amount helps, any amount helps.
17:09So I hope that I can help promote kindness among all Malaysians
17:14to help those who are less fortunate.
17:17Yes, that's true.
17:18Because when you talk about fundraising and donating in general,
17:21I guess some people still don't see the significance of
17:26you know, donating to people in need
17:28because we can see that the culture of donating
17:31or even fundraising Malaysia is not as big or you know,
17:36as successful as in other countries.
17:38But maybe from your perspective, I would like to ask you,
17:42like maybe your experiences.
17:43Does fundraising really work or like just to give awareness to the people?
17:49Like how is it actually successful when you talk about people donating the money
17:54and the money goes to the people in need?
17:56Because I think a lot of people are quite scared or maybe skeptical when they talk about fundraising
18:01because they think, oh, the people, a lot of people have done donating.
18:05So they don't have to donate to places like NCISM.
18:09So like how to give them the awareness that it's not just you have to hope to like the big
18:14companies,
18:14people who do CSR programs, even me myself as a normal citizen,
18:20I should have the responsibility to donate as well.
18:24What do you think?
18:27It's very interesting because it is important to make sure that the people feel comfortable donating.
18:35The first question people ask is, where does the money go?
18:39And when they look at the bank account, where does the money go?
18:43Firstly, you're going to give some comfort to the donors.
18:46So authentication is important and partnering with the National Cancer Society,
18:52a big organization helps in terms of trust.
18:56So if you look at Run For Go, every single cent raised on the Run For Go goes to National
19:04Cancer Society.
19:05That's number one.
19:07And number two, I think the more people are aware of the type of people's suffering,
19:13and hopefully people are kind enough to open up their wallet.
19:20And cancer affects everybody, which is what I found out.
19:24There's somebody in the family or some of our friends who have been affected by cancer.
19:28And to get people to open up their wallet, I'll give you an example.
19:35A friend of mine I haven't seen for 40 years, saw an article of me in the newspaper
19:41and he had dinner with me and next thing I know, he donated 10,000 ringgit.
19:46So there are people out there who feel for it.
19:49And we just have to make sure that they understand where the money goes
19:53and what is important to help every single child that you can save.
19:58So I think the matches has to be gone out in a big way.
20:02Yeah, and that's quite a big amount, 10,000 ringgit to be donating.
20:06And Alhamdulillah, I think that is for a good cause.
20:10And to increase the awareness more, maybe from your experiences as well,
20:15how much do the people that have cancer that are receiving this donation,
20:21how thankful are them to the people donating?
20:24How much does it mean to them?
20:27Okay.
20:29So one of the things that we are going to do as I run along Peninsular Malaysia is
20:35we're going to interview caregivers and survivors of cancer.
20:39And people who have helped, who have been helped by National Cancer Society.
20:43I can assure you they are very grateful because when one survivor that was interviewed on the media
20:50tells a story about how grateful they are to be helped by the National Cancer Society.
20:56So all you have to do is help one person, and that person will be very grateful.
21:00And that person will help another person.
21:02And that person will make effort to promote cancer awareness
21:06and also to promote things like screening earlier, for example.
21:12Those are things that the survivor didn't get to do.
21:15Now he's saying, oh, I better encourage people to scream, for example.
21:19So it's a snowball effect.
21:21Once you start the ball rolling, I hope people will be considerate enough to think about the cancer patients.
21:29Yeah. And talking about starting, maybe in your perspective again,
21:32how do people should start promoting and increasing awareness about fundraising,
21:39especially for this Run4Goal program?
21:41How can they help to let other people know about this project?
21:46Okay. Nowadays, social media is a good way to let people know about the course that I'm doing.
21:56So I've started to be on Instagram. I've started to be on Facebook.
22:00I've never been on Facebook or Instagram.
22:02I started Instagram with 20 followers.
22:06Now I've got almost 1200 followers.
22:08So that's the snowball effect I'm talking about.
22:10and get as much of the message out there so that people are aware of the plight of cancer patient
22:17and the caregiver.
22:19And it has been very encouraging so far.
22:23So Instagram, Facebook, on my website, Run4Goal.my has a lot of information about the project that I'm doing.
22:34So I think the more people know about it, the more interesting you'll get.
22:39And as I run through each state, I hope to be able to create awareness as I run through each
22:44state.
22:45And National Cancer Society will have different programs like cancer screening program and so on
22:51to create more awareness as we go along.
22:53Yeah.
22:54And maybe before we end, what would be your final words to the people watching to come and support and
23:01join you on this project?
23:04Yeah.
23:05Come and support me in person anywhere along the route because you can see me live on my website.
23:11Or come and support me through telling this story to as many people as you can.
23:17Run4Goal.my will be the place to go to find out most of the information.
23:22Yeah.
23:23And to those watching, don't forget to go to the website Run4Goal.my.
23:28Over there, you can see the details.
23:30The run will be starting at 28th of March at Penang.
23:33Stage one will be starting at Penang, Kedak and Perlis.
23:36And then we will go on to Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Melaka and Selangor.
23:41And then to KL, Selangor, Perak and back to Penang, which is the final stretch of the run.
23:47And you can join and you can track Mr. SG over there at the website.
23:51And you can join whenever you want.
23:53And also don't forget to donate at the website as well to show us that we can together help these
23:58people,
23:59these children with cancer in need so that they could live a better life and perhaps survive the cancer that
24:05they have.
24:06And I guess that is all the time that we have today for our pagi and this morning.
24:10Thank you, Mr. SG, for joining us and sharing this wonderful journey of our project.
24:15So we will see you later on.
24:18Thank you.
