Queensland is cracking down on e-bikes and e-mobility devices banning riders under 16, after a surge in injuries and deaths.

00:03Queensland has become the first state to make major moves to tighten youth e-bike
00:08rules, banning riders under 16 as part of a safety blitz. The overhaul followed a spike
00:14in injuries and deaths linked to e-mobility devices, with the government backing all 27
00:19recommendations from a parliamentary inquiry.
00:27Under the changes, under 16s will be banned from riding e-bikes. Older riders will need
00:33at least a learner licence, while higher powered devices will be treated like motorbikes, requiring
00:38registration and insurance. Police will also gain new powers, including random breath testing
00:44and the ability to seize illegal bikes, with parents potentially on the hook if their child
00:49breaks the law. The laws are set to roll out from July 1st, with a transition period and
00:55education campaign planned.
00:57It's exactly the response that Queenslanders need because we've seen too many injuries,
01:02sadly we've seen deaths, and it's been put in the back burner for far too many years,
01:06which is why we addressed it when we came to government. We said it would be nation leading
01:10and best of all, police will have the power to seize them, destroy them, so you don't
01:16see them back on the streets.
