00:20I believe you're from the US and now you are actually here in the Philippines
00:25to do this digital marketing of yours.
00:27So can you tell us more about your business journey here?
00:30I have had a digital marketing agency in California since 2008
00:34and initially I came over to the Philippines in 2019
00:38with the thoughts of building a back office here
00:41where I would hire local Filipinos that would manage the company.
00:45But from the first time that I came over here,
00:48I really fell in love with the Philippines and Filipinos
00:51and I didn't want to go back to the US.
00:53We are focused still on software development, digital marketing,
00:57but increasingly having to look at things like artificial intelligence
01:00as the technological landscape is really changing
01:04not just in the Philippines but around the world.
01:06Of all the countries out there or Asia countries,
01:09why did you choose Philippines?
01:11Before, what would happen is I would work with employees
01:15out of my California office during the day
01:17and then at night I would often be working overseas
01:20with contractors or other marketing agencies overseas.
01:24And so when I decided about what country should I have a back office for,
01:30I already really loved working with Filipinos
01:32and so I thought that I would start the company here
01:35because I already had experience working with Filipinos
01:38that did an amazing job for my company.
01:41Building a business is always about taking risks
01:44and it's not easy.
01:46Most especially, you're from the US
01:48and you're building your own business here in the Philippines.
01:51Do you have any struggles or challenges along the way?
01:54I think the biggest struggle for me at first
01:56was just understanding how different work culture can be
02:00in both countries.
02:02That took my initial few years really trying to learn that here
02:05and now that I've been here for six years,
02:09I'd say that things are a lot less challenging
02:11than they were at the beginning.
02:13You're not just the CEO and of course the president and the owner,
02:16you also do vlogging.
02:18So what type of content do you usually do or vlog?
02:22My focus on that is sharing in part about business
02:25and so both for Filipinos or foreigners that are interested,
02:30I'm really passionate about helping fellow foreigners
02:33to know more about the Philippines.
02:35It's focused on a lot of things that I think
02:37both Filipinos and foreigners alike with my industry.
02:40Do you have any tips or advice for those people
02:43who would also like to venture into digital marketing
02:46or put them up also their company or business
02:49here in the Philippines?
02:50There's enormous opportunities here
02:53for Filipinos that are interested in business
02:56to say to follow your dreams.
02:58I think a lot of people think that you need to be rich
03:02before starting a business.
03:04But if you look at even people like Ramon Ong
03:07or other Filipinos,
03:09you really have very little to start off with.
03:12Even if it's a simple side hustle,
03:14it's really worth trying something that's entrepreneurial
03:17at some time in your life
03:19to start with what you have
03:21and then let it grow over time.
03:24Sabi nga ni Eleanor Roosevelt,
03:26do one thing every day that scares you.
03:28Yan po ang pinakita sa atin
03:29ang business owner na si Mr. John Smulo.
