00:00.
00:30and welcome again to the big match and if figures mean anything they certainly add up to a bumper
00:35weekend for goals in 43 football league matches yesterday there were 133 goals where we'll bring
00:41you a sprinkling of them now including one from George Best and in our main match we had more
00:45than our share it was Spurs against Nottingham Forest and now Chivers and he's onside he's all
00:54right also Liverpool against Huddersfield Keegan and Newcastle against Manchester United
01:05and as a bonus we have the girls from that astonishing Scottish League Cup final between
01:10Celtic and Partick Thistle
01:16fantastic business going on in the goal here what a sensation
01:19but now let's get on with the action and the goals as we go to White Hart Lane
01:23where the pitch now really is benefiting from a combination of better drainage
01:28and the summer-like weather that's gone with it and where Spurs this season are unbeaten
01:32what's more they've averaged just over three girls a game for their home crowd this season
01:36and now against the bottom club Nottingham Forest Alan Mullery can lead an unchanged Spurs side
01:43Ralph Coates of course is still injured so Jimmy Neighbour gets another chance at seven
01:47where there's always pressure from players like substitute Jimmy Pearce
01:51as for Nottingham Forest who'll be wearing the red shirts in this game they really are a struggling
01:56combination this season only one league win none away from home and now without goalkeeper Jim Barron
02:01and full-back John Winfield both injured and both likely to be badly needed on this sort of occasion
02:06the referee today incidentally is Tom Reynolds and he comes from Swansea
02:11most eyes today of course though on the Spurs players reported to have been blasted by Bill Nicholson
02:16after that disappointment in France Martin Chivers was one Martin Peters was another and the third was skipper Alan Mullery
02:23Forrest will look to Ian Moore for his flair and also very much to the goalkeeping skills of reserve Eric
02:29Hume
02:29but now the crowd waiting for the start
02:36who've felt the whiff at their back over the last few days since that disappointing performance in France
02:41get us away defending the goal to our right and it's going to be very interesting to see indeed
02:45how they react to the verbal lashing they've had from Bill Nicholson
02:49certainly the opportunity is open to them against the team bottom in the first division
02:53with only one league win this season Nottingham Forest
02:57Eric Hume the reserve goalkeeper in because Jim Barron has still got a finger injury
03:08those long runs down the left by Cyril Knowles
03:12did very well indeed did Knowles there and it's still not away
03:15Gilzean is leaving for it getting ahead to it just passed
03:24Gilzean who's having a fine season for Tottenham with 12 goals so far
03:32Richardson cut out beautifully by Peters killed dead Knowles still up there the appetite for attack
03:38Gilzean
03:39Gilzean
03:40Chivers jockeying for position there and it'll come through unexpectedly
03:44oh and a great save by Hume from Mullery
03:49magnificent save by the reserve keeper there
03:52a good quick snapshot by Alan Mullery
04:03England bundle off that ball by Martin
04:09Gilzean
04:10so Spurs take up the onslaught again
04:15to Gilzean
04:18Knowles has gone on
04:21and Spurs will get the corner
04:30Mike England's going right up into that area this is the situation in that goal mouth now
04:34Chivers clearly the danger man
04:38and Gilzean is there as well
04:42here's the corner now from neighbour
04:45Gilzean trying his flick back from the near post
04:49and
04:49Knowles
04:51Mullery
04:54Chivers
04:57Dainty ballplay by such a big man
04:59has such tremendous balance
05:01and the ball for Peters
05:02and he missed it
05:04beautifully put through
05:05by Martin Chivers
05:07with all the delicacy of a man half his size
05:11putting Peters completely through
05:13and a miss that he'll not be at all happy about
05:24Hindley's header going straight to Knowles
05:26and here's
05:30Beal
05:33quick change of direction
05:35and he finds neighbour
05:37Perryman
05:40Kinnear
05:41and Perryman's gone sprinting around the outside of Kinnear
05:44more as a dummy
05:44a decoy
05:45Chivers not quite reaching this one
05:47Peters
05:50finding Knowles
05:52again Spurs beginning to dictate it
05:54Knowles this time looking for Gilzean
05:56Gilzean with his head
05:57and Peters
05:58and that's the goal
06:00and one that counts from Martin Peters
06:03with 20 minutes gone
06:05beautifully nodded down for him
06:10so the men who were criticised
06:13and one of them who was roundly criticised
06:15Martin Peters put Spurs ahead
06:17nodded down beautifully by Gilzean
06:19and thundered in by Martin Peters
06:24so Spurs go into the lead then
06:25with 20 odd minutes gone
06:29a lead they've threatened for so long
06:33Martin Peters his sixth goal of the season
06:46Biel in very quickly
06:49Perryman to Peters
06:53one to look for Chivers
06:54but Bob Chapman
06:56completely in command of that situation
07:01Biel getting up well
07:03Kinnear chugging back quickly
07:04and Martin going in too
07:06and Biel once more
07:07getting Spurs out of trouble
07:08Lyons trying to hit one first time
07:14Chapman
07:18McKenzie
07:21Neva
07:23Biel
07:24to Jennings
07:34Neva
07:36Nulls
07:38Good play by Nulls
07:40he's really enjoying his game this afternoon
07:41Neva now prepared to take on defenders
07:43Chivers
07:43playing a beautiful one-two
07:45and Neva couldn't reach it
07:46and neither could Chivers quite
07:48but they were slicing great gaps
07:50through that forest defence
07:52Nulls planting a wide one there
07:54a deep one
07:55Chivers will hope to get underneath this one
07:56and Forest
07:58under enormous pressure there
08:00but now it's Robertson
08:04Martin
08:07Robertson
08:10Perriman
08:17Peters
08:18and Neva
08:19Peters
08:20and Neva
08:24Peters has gone on the outside again
08:26beautifully played for him
08:28and he is completely free
08:29Chivers
08:30Chivers
08:30oh a magnificent goal
08:33superbly created
08:35and brilliantly finished
08:37by Peters
08:38and Chivers between them
08:39a really magnificent Tottenham goal
08:46the beautiful little cross
08:48first by Neva
08:50taken first time by Peters
08:52and inimitably
08:53Chivers there
08:54to provide the killer header
09:02to provide the killer header
09:04and now they are beginning to rip
09:06Nottingham Forest apart
09:09and if Spurs continue in this vein
09:11the gates
09:12most certainly are open for them
09:19and now
09:19Kinnear
09:22England
09:27Perriman
09:32misunderstanding there between Gilzean and
09:35Kinnear
09:36and Beale doing very well to stop Ian Moore in full flight
09:41but
09:42Philip Beale
09:45Knowles
09:49Perriman
09:54Kinnear
09:55Gilzean trying to dummy Chapman
09:59and he might try again
10:01and he's given a penalty
10:03he's given a penalty
10:04and the opportunity now for Spurs to go three ahead
10:08with three goals in five minutes
10:11Mr. Reynolds absolutely no qualms at all about that one
10:16it's going to be
10:17number ten Martin Peters to take it
10:21and he'll be
10:22trying to beat Eric Hume
10:24of Nottingham Forest
10:33Goal number three
10:35three goals in five minutes for Spurs
10:38and never a moment of doubt
10:39that Peters would score with that penalty
10:41. . . . Goal number one
10:47. . . Goal number onerecht
10:53Goal
10:53number one Goal
10:55number one Goal
10:56go So 3
10:56-0 to Spurs
11:02O'Kane
11:06Neva
11:16Fraser
11:21and Perriman stepping in nicely there for Spurs
11:24Gilzin as the white shirts come forward again
11:27Knowles
11:32Neva
11:32Oh Hindley going hard on him there
11:36and certainly under the new regime
11:38he could never be allowed to get away with that
11:42Knowles with the free kick
11:45Hindley on his chest
11:46and now Ian Moore
11:48Perriman in quickly
11:49a nice little triangle there for Spurs
11:51Knowles and Peters completing it
11:55Mullery
11:58Knowles
12:00Played beyond Hindley there for Chivers
12:02Chivers v Chapman
12:05Mullery now
12:07Gilzin
12:09Chivers
12:12Played there
12:13one tour that almost came off a game
12:14between Neva and Chivers
12:15and Neva in with another chance
12:17still Neva across that goal
12:22lovely little slippery skills there from Jimmy Neva
12:32England
12:35Ian Moore
12:39Robertson
12:41and now to Lyons
12:46and again Peters
12:47right back there to get
12:48it away for Spurs
12:50and now it's the goal kick
13:00so just over half an hour gone
13:02Spurs leading by these three goals
13:05Peters, Chivers
13:06and Peters a penalty
13:16Chivers alone up front for once
13:19and now Peter Hindley for Nottingham Forest
13:23straight to Knowles
13:24Neva
13:29got Knowles up there again in support for him
13:31and played too far ahead of Knowles
13:43Richardson
13:59Neva
14:00Neva
14:00oh flicking that
14:01almost arrogantly over the head of Hindley
14:04seems to be enjoying his battles
14:05with a man who is a good deal taller and bigger than he is
14:08and there's the cross that goes between Chivers
14:09now Gilzin
14:10and a fine save
14:12and he's completely saved
14:13because Chivers couldn't quite get in
14:16good work there by Hulme
14:17saving the shot from Gilzin in the first place
14:21and then scrambling across to prevent Chivers
14:23having a free shot at goal in the second place
14:30oh straight to Chivers
14:32oh and he stopped it with his knees did Hulme
14:34and he was a very lucky young fellow indeed
14:37what a terrible kick
14:39straight to Chivers of all people
14:43Perriman
14:45Beal
14:48and now Chivers
14:49and he's onside
14:50he's all right
14:52off the post
14:53bad luck for Chivers
14:55Gilzin
14:55trying to turn it back again for Chivers
14:58and Chivers given offside
15:03well it looked to me as though Chivers was behind Gilzin there
15:05but the linesman was directly in line
15:08and he had no doubts at all
15:10certainly no doubts at all that Chivers was desperately unlucky with that shot
15:15against the foot of that forest post
15:22England's header
15:24Perriman
15:34Robertson
15:36Robertson
15:36Beal
15:45Chivers
15:45Chivers laying it off most delicately there for Kinnear
15:50Gilzin
15:52Peters
15:54looking for Gilzin
15:55who's made his run
15:56and he just failed to connect
15:59beautiful run though by Gilzin
16:02and a beautifully placed cross there by Martin Peters
16:09Beal
16:10Mullery ahead of him calling for it
16:11but in fact he prefers Kinnear on the right
16:16Chivers
16:20Kinnear
16:23Peters
16:24Perriman
16:26might be getting into trouble
16:27going through with the tackle
16:28and in fact bringing down
16:29Moore
16:30but he was playing the ball all the time
16:31and the referee said go on
16:33Beal
16:37Mullery
16:37nodding it out there for Neibor
16:39back in again for Mullery
16:40and now for Knowles
16:41nice one touch football there by Spurs
16:43across towards Peters
16:44and his header is just over
16:54and there in fact goes the whistle for half time
16:57Spurs well on top
16:58and I suppose the thing that Forrest and Eric Hume
17:01particularly can most hope for
17:02is that their appetite for goals
17:04might diminish in the second half
17:05goals by Martin Chivers
17:06the number nine
17:07and two by Martin Peters
17:09one of them from a penalty
17:11still to come for you to enjoy
17:12on the big match this afternoon
17:13highlights of Newcastle against Manchester United
17:15and Liverpool against Huddersfield
17:17but the score here
17:19at White Hart Lane
17:20at half time
17:21Spurs three
17:22Nottingham Forest nil
17:24and we'll be back with you
17:25in a couple of minutes
17:39Welcome back
17:40as Nottingham Forest then
17:40get us away at the start
17:41of the second half
17:42Forest in fact
17:43who've had only one win
17:44in their last 13 games
17:46and that was against Aldershop
17:48the fourth division side
17:49in the League Cup
17:50certainly at the moment
17:51look as though they might add
17:51to that very unhappy record
17:53here at White Hart Lane
17:54this afternoon
17:543-0 down
17:56and England planting it back
17:57to Pat Jennings
18:02Jennings who really hasn't had
18:03a save
18:03to make so far
18:05in this game
18:08that in fact could be
18:09the biggest evil
18:10for Spurs this afternoon
18:11that they feel they've done
18:12enough already to win it
18:16which it may well be
18:17that they have
18:18but Peters now
18:19to Mullery
18:23Gilzeen
18:23nicely there for Peters
18:25squared again for Chivers
18:27and a chance was missed
18:31Chivers prepared though
18:32to applaud Peters
18:33who killed that ball
18:34and found exactly
18:35the right angle for him
19:03and found exactly the right angle for him
19:06Gilsey, Noles, Perriman, Naber begging for the ball on this near touchline, and a lovely
19:15flighted ball there by Perriman, and now Naber, depth opening up before him, and Kinnear over
19:24on his right, Joe Kinnear now, back once more to Naber, chance to fire one, and miscueing
19:30badly, and Chapman completely in the clear himself, could have let that gone for the
19:36goal kick, but I suppose to be absolutely safe, and he wasn't to know that perhaps
19:40somebody was lurking behind him, decided to play it safe and give away the corner, which
19:47Jimmy Naber's going to take, and England, again right up there, Mullery, still Mullery
20:00looking for an angle for a shot, and getting one in, Alan Mullery, number four, so a long
20:13snaking run from Mullery, from in the touchline area, looking for the right angle all the time,
20:19eventually finding that, and the back of the forest net, so Spurs then leading now by four
20:28goals to nil,
20:36and so the three players who were most heavily criticised in the press by manager Bill
20:40Nicholson, this afternoon now, have all scored, Martin Chivers, Martin Peters, and finally
20:46the skipper Alan Mullery, Hindley, Beal, oh, couldn't have known that Pat Jennings was there,
21:12for his substitute, Alan Buckley wanting to come on his first game,
21:19and in fact it's Neil Martin, the number nine, who's going off, the 70,000 pound man is called
21:24off, and a defender in fact is brought on, to try and stem the flow of Tottenham attacks,
21:39Gilsey, Kinnear and Mullery, back to Mike England, and now the substitute, Alan Buckley, Moore,
21:52Buckley, trying a one-two there with Moore, and Moore is brought down by Perriman on the edge of that
21:56area, Gilzean looks to be in trouble,
22:07so Gilzean is hobbling, and it looks like he's going off for treatment, so that the game can get on,
22:15so no substitute at the moment, and the Spurs wall now, facing this Nottingham Forest free-kick,
22:21that's the wall that Nottingham Forest, Ian Moore has got to pierce, Perriman, Peters there in it,
22:27Beal's in it, and Muller is in it, they want it back ten yards, and Martin Chivers, there they are
22:36coming
22:36back ten yards, Chivers there alongside the wall, in fact that's a deceiving angle, but there's Moore with
22:42the kick, and well over, Alan Gilzean in fact is getting a tremendous round of applause from the
22:48crowd here, he really has become a big favourite here, but his face filled with pain,
22:59Jimmy Pearce now coming on, now Noles, played there for Chivers, and now for Pearce, is this the chance,
23:13Oh, a marvellous goal, and it's given without any doubt at all, the referee in fact looked at the lines
23:19run,
23:19he kept his flag down, and Pearce from the sharpest of angle, really whacked it past Eric Hughes,
23:26so a goal for Jimmy Pearce, and the fifth for Tottenham.
23:48Well, a tremendous shot there by Pearce, hit with a real economy of effort, if there's any question mark at
23:56all,
23:56it's I suppose a very slight question mark against Hulme, who'd left that near post, from that sort of angle,
24:02that should have been guarded, but certainly Pearce's shot was so swift and so sure,
24:09and now Beal.
24:15Spurs with their ambition still high it seems, it seemed to have flagged a little bit just after half-time,
24:20and Perryman now, on to Peters.
24:25Aim towards Chivers, and he missed it, but Perryman, and down goes Hulme.
24:39An infringement there, and a free kick.
24:48Finally,
24:58Mackenzie,
25:04And now it's Richardson, Buckley,
25:07getting in each other's way again,
25:09and Knowles to hammer it away towards Chivers,
25:12and he was fractionally offside when that ball was played.
25:15No question of that.
25:19Martin Chivers looking perplexed and wondering what the linesman gave,
25:22but there was absolutely no doubt at all about it,
25:23when that ball was hit out of defence,
25:26Chivers was a couple of feet offside.
25:33Nice little touch there by Mackenzie for Lyons.
25:40Moore.
25:45Fraser in very quickly.
25:47Moore not quickly enough.
25:59Handball given against John Richardson, or Paul Richardson,
26:03and quickly taken by Jimmy Pearce.
26:12Lyons.
26:13Oh, and Peters getting it in the end.
26:15They look for a time as though they're playing Ducks and Drakes with Martin Peters,
26:19but he took possession in the end, and now it's with Knowles.
26:24The little chip that was aimed in the first place for Chivers and never looked like reaching him,
26:28and it's Buckley now for Nottingham Forest.
26:31To Ian Moore.
26:33Going past Mullery quickly.
26:35England coming across to cover.
26:36That's a nice-looking little cross there.
26:37Beale getting ahead to it, though.
26:41Robertson turning it back once more.
26:43Ian Moore, who really has fought for Forest in this second half,
26:46with a shot just over that crossbar.
26:51Found a very useful yard of space there,
26:54with all the pace in the world,
26:56but he's shot a yard or so too high.
26:59Ian Moore.
27:06So a quarter of an hour to go.
27:08Spurs 5-0 ahead.
27:18Mark Chivers, nicely killed there.
27:21Now Perriman.
27:22Oh, Perriman and Chivers not reading the way it should have gone.
27:26And now it's McKenzie.
27:29Gamely taking on Philip Beale,
27:31but finding Mullery's there as well.
27:33But now it's Ian Moore.
27:35Nice little dummy there by Moore,
27:37and Mullery again saving Spurs.
27:38But now with Jimmy Pearce.
27:40Men ahead of him.
27:41Chivers unmarked on the right.
27:42Neighbour over on the left.
27:45It's the ball to Neighbour.
27:52Neighbour just a little too slack and a little too casual there.
27:56But Bob Chapman penalised for bundling Neighbour off the ball.
27:59A free kick to Spurs.
28:02Ten minutes now to go.
28:05Bob Chapman a really harassed defender there.
28:07This Nottingham Forest defence this afternoon.
28:13And Cyril Knowles to take the free kick for Tottenham.
28:18Pearce, Chivers and Peters are the men that he will mostly aim for.
28:22And Peters in fact.
28:23Chivers.
28:25Now surely someone will have a go.
28:27And it's there by Jimmy Pearce.
28:31It almost looked as though Spurs had lost their chance.
28:34Pat Jennings applause from the other end.
28:38But it went from one to the other.
28:40They looked at each other.
28:41And finally Jimmy Pearce made it count.
28:49So Pearce, who's come on as a substitute, now scores his second goal of this game.
28:57And it looks as though Joe Kinnear is going to hover off, leaving Spurs 6-0 ahead.
29:02And now down to 10 men.
29:09Kerriman.
29:11Peters.
29:13Knowles.
29:14Going past Chapman.
29:15And there really was no challenge there either.
29:16And Knowles going on.
29:17Finally stopped by O'Kane.
29:22It's Forest defence really not making one effective tackle.
29:27Very weak indeed in the way that they've challenged these Spurs forwards.
29:31And now it's Lyons.
29:33Robertson outside him.
29:39Way over the head of McKenzie.
29:40And Naber coming right back.
29:42And the little flickiest one to Mullery.
29:44Putting Mullery in trouble.
29:45Now Buckley turning that across.
29:47An empty goal.
29:49And Spurs very nearly punished there for their slackness.
29:54Their far too casual approach to that situation.
30:22Chivers.
30:24To Knowles.
30:28Philip Beale.
30:31Perriman.
30:35Pierce.
30:38And Forest throw.
30:54Peter Hindley making a slow and stately progress down that right.
30:58Lyons to tuck it back again to Richard Thurston.
31:01And now with Ian Moore.
31:05Moore taking it up again.
31:08And a ricochet there.
31:10Buckley.
31:10Can he get in?
31:11No.
31:11Smothered by Pat Jennings.
31:14Good piece of goalkeeping.
31:16And Buckley really seems an industrious little player.
31:21Now Perriman.
31:22Now Perriman.
31:22Nicely placed in the middle of the field.
31:24But only two Spurs players were up.
31:25Chivers and Naber.
31:26Now it's Chivers.
31:27Peters has gone hard into that area.
31:30But it wouldn't fall for Spurs.
31:31And Forrest get it away once more.
31:36It looks as though that Tottenham appetite has been satisfied and it's Richardson bringing it away again for Nottingham Forest
31:41to Ian Moore.
31:48Skilfully getting past Knowles.
31:49Putting it across there.
31:50And a goal.
31:51And it's scored by the number six Richardson.
31:54So much of it though to the credit of Ian Moore.
31:59A really brilliant run by the Forrest number 11.
32:02Pulled back nicely.
32:04And Richardson whacking it in with his head.
32:07To make it 6-1.
32:08And the last kick of the game.
32:10That is the final whistle.
32:13A brilliant victory by Spurs against surely one of the most inept sides in the first division certainly that I've
32:19seen.
32:19Martin Chivers who scored one of the goals.
32:22Jimmy Pearce who scored a couple of them.
32:26And Martin Peters who scored another two.
32:29Alan Mullery adding the other one.
32:31So a very convincing victory by Spurs answering all the criticism against them after that depressing performance in France.
32:39So the final score here at White Hart Lane.
32:42Tottenham Hotspur 6.
32:44Nottingham Forest 1.
32:55Well poor old Forrest at times weak beyond belief.
32:59And Spurs at times equally brilliant.
33:01But there is still one Spurs player that the fans find very hard indeed to sum up.
33:06Martin Peters.
33:07Well yesterday Jimmy Hill went along to White Hart Lane.
33:10Especially to look at Martin Peters.
33:11Well in fact Sir Alf Ramsey said about Martin that he was 10 years ahead of his time.
33:15And I think this may have reacted unfairly on Martin in some ways.
33:18Because people don't quite understand it.
33:20And they throw that remark at him.
33:22I think we found one or two of the answers to the brilliance of his play yesterday.
33:26He's a player who's most devastating in both penalty areas.
33:29He does a lot more work in his own penalty area than people imagine.
33:32And he's devastating indeed when he gets into his opponent's penalty area.
33:35But it's how he operates darting up from the middle of the field that really unravels the skill of the
33:42player.
33:42There he plays a ball to neighbour.
33:44And watch now his brain, his football brain, is searching for the space in the Noddy and Forest penalty area.
33:50Who was that flashed across there?
33:51And can you say that he hasn't found all the space in the world to lay on that chance for
33:56Martin Chivers?
33:57It's a superb diving header.
33:59But on the other hand who could deny that Peters was the architect of that goal?
34:03In fact, it is this bursting from the middle of the field into the penalty area that really makes him,
34:09for me, worth as much as any other player in the country.
34:12Without any doubt, it's difficult for opponents to play against it.
34:16Sometimes when he gets up there, he's not all that accurate with his shooting.
34:20Three out of four times, he'll hit his shots well.
34:22He's seldom off target with his headers.
34:24But here's an example.
34:25Early on in the game, he just goes for this through run after that fine work by Martin Chivers and
34:30hammers it over the top.
34:31Not quite as consistent as he might be.
34:34Yet, on the other hand, when it comes to passing through balls from the middle of the field, watch the
34:38touch of that off the outside of his foot there to neighbour.
34:41There's not much can be left desired in that skill.
34:44And now the curved cross into the penalty area, this time to Gilzean.
34:49Measured to the inch, Gilzean found his own area of space there and is a half an inch from scoring.
34:54And the best move of the match, Peters on the ball, typically in the middle of the field, lays to
34:58Mullery.
34:59Watch what happens to him from now on as he runs to the right of the picture.
35:02Chivers to Peters, he's in acres of space again and lays on that chance for Martin Chivers.
35:09He pushes forward at every opportunity.
35:12This is a left foot cross into the area, accurately laid for Chivers again, which brings about Perryman's shot.
35:18But the speed of the brain works at all times in the middle of the field.
35:21Perryman, first time from Peters, leaves Knolls in that marvellous position.
35:26Sometimes hurried passes mean mistakes which the crowd don't like, but they also mean wonderful opportunities.
35:31He seldom loses in the air.
35:33That header, onto Chivers' head, creates the chance for Jimmy Pierce to hit that superb volley.
35:40And now finally, Peters at his devastating best.
35:45The thing that makes him feared by all opponents.
35:48In the middle of the field again, laying the ball back to Cyril Knolls.
35:52He's drifting.
35:54Again, his brain is searching for the space.
35:56There's the chip to Chivers, and who's found the space?
35:59And when you can find space that destroys defences from that position, then you're worth £200,000 of anybody's money.
36:09Fascinating stuff there.
36:10Martin Peters, as I'm sure you've never seen him before, a truly tremendous player.
36:14Now some more action, and for this we go to Liverpool.
36:17Liverpool, in fact, who've lost four of their seven games away from home, a record they badly need to improve.
36:21At home, though, they're unbeaten.
36:23Yesterday it was Liverpool against Huddersfield.
36:25The commentators, Gerald Sinstadt.
36:26The pictures come from Granada Television.
36:29Huddersfield are in the striped shirts, and we pick it up in the second half.
36:34Brian Hall leaving the kick for Tommy Smith.
36:37Keegan and Evans in the area.
36:40Keegan!
36:41Beautiful effort!
36:45So close.
36:47Lawson is stretched out.
36:49Absolutely cold.
36:51Must have hit his head on the post as he pushed that one away.
36:58Ray Clements keeping warm in the sunshine, but nobody will be more sympathetic than he.
37:06He knows how dangerous this goalkeeping game can be.
37:14Smith.
37:20Cherry's clearance finds Worthington.
37:22David Smith beaten.
37:25Worthington again.
37:27Alan Jones on the far side.
37:29Highway going to challenge.
37:53as we're giving the ball away again, Callaghan,
37:58but Hall out on the right, now four men in the middle waiting for the cross, and Hall is still
38:07going and going well, Evans had hit, he couldn't turn it in, Can Lawler, the whistle had gone,
38:16and he's given a penalty for Handball,
38:34Huddersfield protesting about the Handball, but the penalty given, and Tommy Smith to take
38:41it, he scored three penalties this season, and that wasn't the fourth, and now he squeezed
38:49it in, Lawson's so mad at himself, he smothered it, couldn't control it, and Smith following
39:03up, squeezed it under him, Keegan, to Highway, Hall,
39:21Highway again, just two men waiting in the six-yard area, or just outside it,
39:29four,
39:33Liverpool back playing the game they were playing in the first half,
39:38Hall's cross, too high for Keegan, gone right through to Ross,
39:45Highway down for Evans, and he's put it in,
39:53Alan Evans strikes at last,
40:12Now we come, in fact, to one of the most astonishing results, certainly in Scottish football, probably
40:17in British football, for a long, long time. Celtic were five to one on favourites when they went into the
40:22Scottish League Cup final yesterday, at Hamden Park, against
40:25Partick Thistle. It seemed that the men in those famous hoop shirts couldn't possibly fail to win, but
40:32look what happened now, with commentator Arthur Monford.
40:40Brogan getting in a little bit of a tangle there, McQuaid a quick shot, and it wasn't far away.
40:49McQuaid with a corner kick, over it comes, nicely placed, up go the heads, and it's stopped, almost on the
40:55line, still not cleared, down to Ray, and it's a goal!
40:59Ray scores for Crystal!
41:11McQuaid, clicking it forward to Bone, on to Laurie, Laurie, edge of the box, inside, right foot shot, to the
41:19first side, and it's there!
41:21Laurie! Laurie scores a sensational goal!
41:28Ray, the only other forward up, McQuaid making ground quickly on the left, not a good cross, but not fully
41:32cleared.
41:33Brogan in trouble.
41:37Laurie with a corner, up go the heads, it's a chance for Thistle, McQuaid scores!
41:45Taken by Laurie, in comes Bone, walks the ball into the net, it's 4-0!
41:57Tommy Gemmell forcing himself forward, a lovely through ball, it must be a goal!
42:05Wonderful chance from Dalglish, superb running by Gemmell.
42:09Dalglish took off at exactly the right moment, got the ball at exactly the right time,
42:14and somehow scooped it over the top,
42:18with Alan Ruff in a very vulnerable position.
42:21Glorious chance for Celtic, but Thistle still lead 4-0.
42:25Ten minutes gone in the second half.
42:32Colston trying to get through there, headed away,
42:35kick clear out to Callaghan, it comes, tremendous pressure from Celtic.
42:40And another good save by Ruff.
42:45Referee indicating pre-kick to Thistle,
42:48who still lead 4-0.
42:52Craig has it.
42:55Overcomes his cross, headed down by Makary.
42:58Here's a chance for Makary now,
43:00out in front and it must be a goal!
43:03Dalglish scores!
43:06And here comes Laurie for Thistle.
43:10Edge of the box, lets one go!
43:12And it's a sensational save by Williams!
43:15What a good save that was!
43:19Laurie with the corner, up go the heads!
43:22Ray heading it in, over the top, goal kick!
43:25A marvellous game indeed, and a remarkable result.
43:27Congratulations to Paddock Thistle,
43:29with the honours going round in Scottish football,
43:31that can't be such a bad thing.
43:32But now we come back to the English First Division and Manchester United.
43:35Again, they attracted the biggest crowd of the day in England,
43:38when they went to Newcastle, with 53,000 to watch them at St James' Park.
43:42Newcastle against Manchester United, pictures, tie and tease,
43:45commentator Geoff Thomas, this is the goal that won the game.
43:47He's very pleased, I think, with performances so far.
43:50Garling, for Kidd, back heel by Frank Clarke, Hibbert.
43:57And when you think of Joe Harvey's problems, he's missing seven players,
44:01normal first-team players, Ron Guthrie, Keith Dyson, Bobby Moncur,
44:05Jimmy Smith, David Young, David Craig and John McNamee.
44:10So to put out a side, which is holding Manchester United to nil-nil at half-time,
44:15is not too bad.
44:16Willie Morgan, Kidd leaving it for law, and in goes Best,
44:20and that was our beautifully thought-out bit of play.
44:22Hit up again, Best to finish it off.
44:25Kidd it was who pushed it up.
44:27It rebounded off McFall,
44:29and George Best,
44:31with 65 seconds of the second half gone,
44:35who makes it one goal to nil.
44:38So George Best does it again.
44:40Manchester United now four points ahead of everybody else.
44:44Well, that's it for today.
44:45Hope you've enjoyed it.
44:46Certainly it was a great day for Tottenham yesterday,
44:48even for their substitute, Jimmy Pearce.
44:52Played there for Chivers,
44:53and now for Pearce.
44:54Is this the chance?
44:54Oh, a marvellous goal,
44:56and it's given without any doubt at all.
