00:30is our main mechanic in Dead Space.
00:33It's what you use to kill the enemies, basically.
00:36Instead of just headshots or, you know, body shots,
00:39you've got to dismember these guys.
00:51We wanted something that wasn't just,
00:53ah, fire blindly and sort of light things up,
00:55and, you know, you've got a bunch of guns,
00:56and you just sort of overwhelm dudes.
00:57We wanted the player to feel sort of just powerful enough
01:02and to use a lot of improvisation.
01:05Wouldn't it be cool if you cut off their legs
01:07and they kept calling at you?
01:09They cut off your head, and, you know,
01:11they still came at you a different way.
01:13And we went deeper and deeper into that,
01:15and it just felt like something really new and really cool.
01:21You think about horror movies, right?
01:23And it's like when they're being chased,
01:25people are always required to do more fine movements,
01:28like, you know, get the car keys and the lock
01:30and, like, start or dial the phone or whatever.
01:32Like, big swing and punch, and that's not as big.
01:34Like, trying to pull off something finer under stress
01:37is more scary.
01:39You know, it started to inform what our enemies look like.
01:42You just couldn't have an enemy without tentacles or legs
01:46or things like that
01:46because if dismemberment is the key to the game,
01:50it starts to tell you that you've got to have enemies
01:52that have pieces to dismember.
01:54So from the very start,
01:56once we had adopted the strategic dismemberment
01:59as sort of our core gameplay mechanic
02:01when it came to our shooting,
02:03we developed all of our weapons and tools
02:06to work with that system in a very specific way.
02:10When I have a couple of slashers coming up to me,
02:13I'll probably take out their legs with the plasma cutter
02:15or I might even switch the plasma cutter.
02:17So that kind of turns
02:18and I can cut off their arms
02:19so I know that they're not going to attack me that way.
02:21If you take the pregnant, right,
02:23so there's a bad guy that's got an area
02:25you definitely don't want to shoot.
02:29So you're probably not going to want to use
02:31any of our tools that have an area effect
02:35or do something like that
02:36because you're going to hit parts you don't want to by accident.
02:38Now, it's not that he's resistant or more or less than whatever,
02:41but strategically, you need to sort of be thinking that way.
02:44You know, personally, when I see one of the pregnants come up,
02:46what I want to use is stasis on them
02:48and then I want to cut off their legs with a line gun.
02:51My favorite dismemberment in terms of
02:54really seeing the cause and effect and changing things
02:56is cutting off a necromorph's head.
03:00You cut off his head,
03:02he's just going to come at you wildly.
03:03and he's blinded, but he still knows you're around.
03:06And he can sort of upset the herd, right?
03:08If you've got, like, three guys around,
03:10you sort of take off one guy's head,
03:11then he starts to wail and flail and come at you
03:13and that can sort of affect the whole battle
03:16in a way that sort of upsets things
03:17and you don't get this sort of group coming at you
03:19all organized anymore.
03:21Plus, it just looks really cool.
03:23But decapitation is not necessarily
03:25the best way to go about some of them.
03:29Matter of fact, it just pisses some of them off.
03:35The weapons and the whole strategic dismemberment thing
03:37works differently in zero-G
03:38just like everything works differently in zero-G.
03:42There's one called the Leaper
03:43and you'll see him coming at you in zero-G.
03:46What I love to do is kind of stasis him
03:49so he's slowing down a bit
03:50and that cut off his arms
03:51and then you kind of just see him float past you.
03:55We're constantly trying to keep people
03:56in that sort of scared, tense zone, right?
03:59And so just think about it.
04:01You know you've got four bullets left.
04:03How are you going to work that out?
04:05And that's interesting and sort of scary
04:07because you're like,
04:08ah, if you get the first one right,
04:09now you only need one more,
04:10but then you missed it
04:11and now, oh, I've got to hit that one.
04:12And you're sort of always going back and forth
04:15and you see that number counting down.
04:16Now you only got two.
04:17What are you going to do, buddy?
04:19It's also really key
04:22that I can dismember parts of these guys,
04:25like their arms,
04:26and then I can actually use that as a weapon.
04:28If I could cut off their arm
04:30and use my TK gun
04:34and then shoot that back at them.
04:38What has me really excited
04:40about strategic dismemberment
04:42just as a thing that we've sort of accomplished
04:46is I like shooters.
04:48I play a lot of them, right?
04:49But it tends to be there's a guy,
04:53take him down, bink.
04:54Okay, there's a guy,
04:55take him down, bink.
04:56And you just sort of do it
04:57and you might kill thousands of dudes
04:59the exact same way the whole time.
05:02And this strategic dismemberment thing
05:03brings a thought process
05:06and a variety and excitement to stuff
05:10that I think is pretty special
05:12and I'm pretty proud of.
05:16yeah,
05:40that's all.
05:42I think it's pretty good.
05:42Yeah,
05:42it's impossible to do
05:42I feel like I'm just imagining
05:43how much time is that
05:43and be careful
05:43and okay
05:44and that's fantastic.
