01:24e getting resources for Earth or for other inhabited planets
01:27has become incredibly difficult.
01:31And what they do is they go out to big planets
01:34that are deep, deep out in space
01:36and they mine the whole entire planet.
01:39They just rip it to pieces.
01:40And once we had that image of this planet being ripped apart,
01:44we thought, well, what if you ripped apart a planet
01:47and there was something inside it?
01:50Creating a rich backstory is important
01:52because it gives you the grapples to make it real for people.
01:57Otherwise, everything becomes just a 2D cardboard cutout
02:00of some kind of cliche stereotype
02:02and it's not really entertaining at that point
02:04because everyone's kind of seen on that happening.
02:06We've spent so much time on who is Isaac Clarke.
02:10We've delved into his history with,
02:13well, his parents are divorced
02:14and he hasn't seen his dad in 12 years
02:16and his mom joined this religious group
02:19and, you know, the same thing with all the other characters.
02:21and the more that you know about the characters,
02:24the more that you're informed
02:26on what they would do in a certain situation.
02:31You get sort of the grand story
02:32and you get to be the guy that finishes it,
02:36you know, goes through with your own little personal story
02:40and learns about everybody else's
02:42and they all kind of wrap together in the end.
02:44The story unfolds in the game
02:48to you just as it does to Isaac.
02:50You know, either you're getting your story through video logs
02:54or through events that are happening right in front of you.
02:57It's really key to immersion
02:59because you don't have anything interrupting
03:00the player's experience on the controller.
03:02It's really important for us to keep the story grounded
03:05because this is a horror story.
03:07This isn't Star Wars.
03:08This isn't space fantasy.
03:10The science fiction sort of works against horror.
03:13Like, they sort of fight each other
03:14and you really have to keep the science fiction thing in check
03:17if you want the horror to come out.
03:18I think the story of Dead Space is powerful
03:22because of its intensity
03:25and because of its realism.
03:27and I think you don't see that in games of that.
03:30Right from the beginning,
03:32we wanted to make a really good story.
03:34We wanted to make a very, very strong story
03:36and that's because that's the kind of game
03:38that we want to play.
03:57We want to make a really good story.
