01:00Stringing that, those characters, that world, and putting our gameplay with it, was sort of a perfect marriage.
01:06During that time we found out that Halo itself started ad as an RTS game, which of course was kind
01:10of interesting.
01:11I want to feel in every game like I can invest myself in that world somehow.
01:18We realized very early on that one thing we had to get right was the controls.
01:22One of the biggest concerns I know that's out there on the internet is, you know, how can a strategy
01:27game exist without a mouse and a keyboard?
01:28You're going to have to figure out a way to get the same gameplay on a console controller, and I
01:34think we've done that in Halo Wars.
01:36One common thread is each time we went back and sort of rethought about controls, they got simpler.
01:41What are the basic fundamentals that are fun about RTS? How do we have to control them? How do we
01:46use our controller to control them?
01:48I wanted one button to do one thing, whereas before you look at a console strategy game and say,
01:52well, if you press this button here with the trigger pulled, pull the other trigger at the same time and
01:56press these two buttons,
01:57it's just too much.
01:59A lot of things came out of that. The circle menu came out of that.
02:01The circle menu that we use in Halo Wars is one of the things that I think really stands out
02:08in the game.
02:11It uses what we call the rule of eight.
02:14If you click on a building, you see the circle menu pop up, and there's eight choices there that you
02:19can pick from.
02:19Being, you know, the 12 o'clock versus the 3 o'clock, and then sort of in between the 1
02:23and 2, and like, and all the way around.
02:25It was really simple to press A, push the left stick, and press A again. You could do things just
02:30as fast as you could on a PC.
02:31After you start to play, you'll realize that your thumbs just do the right thing. They kind of go where
02:37you would expect them to go.
02:41I think when you have the previous Halo games out there, and you've got such a huge fan base of
02:47Halo fans, anxious to see what you do next, it sets a huge bar for you to have to meet
02:53their expectations and exceed their expectations.
02:57The patience is not infinite.
02:59We have to live up to the Halo franchise and the expectations people have. So, you know, they expect to
03:04get a great story out of Halo, and, you know, I'm certainly a little biased, but I think the way
03:07that we told our Halo stories is going to help set a bar back on Halo itself to tell their
03:13stories even better next time.
03:14These guys just don't know when to quit.
03:18The way that strategy gamers, you know, who know enough about the origins of the genre, you know, they go
03:23back and talk about Dune 2, and, you know, the early Warcraft games, and I hope in 10 years people
03:27are talking about Halo Wars in the same way.
03:30Background's completed.
03:35Being overruled, the Chaos forces are inside the city limits and approaching the space.
