This is the foundation of all NRI compliance.
Your tax status in India is not based on your passport or visa or nationality or citizenship.
It is based on how many days you stay in India during the financial year and certain additional conditions under Indian tax law.
So every year, ask yourself:
• How many days did I stay in India?
• Did I cross any threshold?
• Have I become Resident, Non-Resident, or RNOR?
Because one small change in residential status can completely change your taxability and foreign asset reporting. So Never assume you are an NRI forever just because you live abroad. Check it every year.
