This is one of the most common FEMA mistakes.:
• If you became NRI but still have regular resident savings accounts, get them redesignated to NRO, NRE or FCNR immediately.
• Don’t keep using resident accounts casually after becoming NRI
Earlier, many people did not pay much attention to this, but today it can become a serious compliance issue. At the very least, send an email to your bank and keep a record that you have initiated the account conversion or closure process. Better to close all unnecessary or inactive bank accounts.
Even in the Income Tax Return, you are now required to specify whether your bank account is an NRO account or a resident account. This clearly shows that the Income Tax Department is paying close attention to the nature and status of your bank accounts.
