03:42Now, this is a classic case of a British manufacturer making something for a perceived market that
03:50they knew nothing about.
03:52It's not.

03:54Released in 1949, the Atlantic was aimed solidly at the US market, with almost half of its production
04:02run heading stateside.
04:04Fewer than 8,000 Atlantics were built, and hardly any survive.
04:10This is a British idea of an American car.
04:13So, they came up with this and put underneath it a 2.6-litre Austin Healey-type engine.
04:19Wow, that's good, isn't it?
04:20So, a straightforward engine.
04:20Yeah, that's great.
04:22But, it's absolutely puny compared to all the American cars.
04:26If you think of these in the early 1950s versus your massive, great big U6s and V8s kind of thing.

04:35This was just like a wheezy old man going down the road and coughing away as it went along.

18:20Replacing the missing core plug shouldn't take quite so long.

18:31Now, the idea with the core plug is to put it into the little hole, the little aperture there.

18:38And then tap it with a hammer like that and that just spreads it out.
18:42Flattens it and makes it a bigger circumference.
18:44Yes, exactly that.
18:45And we put a little bit of this on to seal it.
18:47Yes, but not so much it holds it in.
18:49If it freezes, it'll come out again.
18:51Yes, and if the coolant freezes, it needs to go somewhere.
18:55It needs to expand.

18:56And that's what these plugs are for.
18:57They're meant to push out in an emergency.

19:26In the afternoon, while Jelly works on her suntan, Fuzz continues his overhaul of the brake system.
19:35Hydraulic brakes have been around since the 30s.
19:38Only trouble is, the fluid is easily contaminated with air bubbles, making your brakes spongy.
19:45OK, so are you in, Skid?

19:51...is on and off the foot brake, please.

19:59The hard bit is draining the old stuff without letting any air back in.
20:04Fuzz has an ingenious solution.
20:07What I've done is I've screwed a bolt into the end of this tube and then cut a little slit
20:12in the tube.
20:14When I've put the tube over the bleed nipple, what happens is when Skid presses the pedal down, it forces
20:20fluid out of the slit.
20:22But when he takes his foot off the pedal, the slit closes up and so no air flows back in
20:29the other way.
20:29I'm still pumping.
20:33It's a dirty job, but the colour of the fluid shows it's well past its prime.
20:39Not that everyone appreciates it.
20:41The pumping action has sent Jelly Bean to sleep.

20:51After 20 minutes, Skid's leg has gone to sleep too.
20:55But the old liquids all drained out.

22:05do something anyway, get that loose chrome,
22:07get some of the rust away from there.
22:09If you re-chrome them, you'd lose money
22:11because it won't add the value to the car that the chrome will cost.
22:15Well, I've had some bumpers done recently, as you know,
22:18and they were about 1,600 quid.

22:20So I really think that would negate our profit.

29:33What I've done, I've removed the three screws to take this clamp off the back.
29:37This will reveal the little pivot inside.
29:39This is what's broken off the car.
29:41I can drill a hole in there and thread it.
29:42Screw that screw into there like that.
29:44And screw that back into the car.
29:46Lock it up tight and it should work.
29:47As long as Skib doesn't lean on it and break it again, we'll be in business.
29:52The pivot's made from Mazac, a metal alloy that was popular in the 1940s.
29:58It's brittle, so it requires careful handling.
30:02When you heat it up, it runs very, very fluid like water.
30:04So you can make very intricate shapes with it by putting it into moulds.
30:07But one of its drawbacks is it's very brittle, so it snaps easily.
30:12Once he's drilled a hole, then Alan uses a tapping tool to create a new screw thread.
30:18Look at that, that's just perfect.
30:22Next stage is to drill a matching hole and tap a matching thread into the car's fixing point.
30:29That's a thread cut in there.
30:31So now this will hopefully screw on nicely.
30:34Alan reattaches the gloss and we have a fully functioning, fully pivoting wing mirror.
30:41There we go, just perfect.
30:47Skid, meanwhile, has been doing sterling work on the bumpers.
