00:00Is that my tea? Where's my tea? I can't put one. I think it's in my tea. I don't know. That's not your tea. Is that your tea? Where did I put my tea? There's two more here. Oh, don't be absurd. What's more important? No, no. Where's the biscuits? Oh, they're over there. I'm going to have to make another one. Here you go. I can't believe it. Is that my tea? Well, I don't know. It's a spare. That's not my tea. Never mind. Never mind. Tea.
00:27We're back. Oh, I'm loving this. Scouring Britain's sheds for classic cars. A thing of beauty. Proper special. Quintessential Brits. That's nice. A Lee Francis. American icons. Look at the amount of chrome on the front there. And Continental Curios. That is a Lancia Aprilia. We're going to buy them. Thank you so much. Fantastic, Ludo. Sort them. It's the sunroof. No, please, I'm getting out now.
00:57Drive them. And sell them for a tidy profit. Are we're in the money? This is Sheddenberry's classic cars.
01:12We're off to Swansea. Are you feeling odd? Ready for an odyssey? Which means why is it an odyssey? Well, we're going a long way to another country.
01:23What country? We're going to Wales. Near Swansea. And we're going to meet a lovely fella called Di. I love Wales. Wales would be a much nicer place if it had a roof.
01:34What's Di got in his locker? Do you know? He's into his powerful air-cooled stuff. So he likes a Porsche. He likes a bit of Americana.
01:42Does he? He likes some signage. And the odd car that comes in that takes his fancy. So he's got quite a mixture.
01:49So he's into Porsches. Yeah. He loves a Porsche. He loves an early Porsche as well. Early 911s, 356s, all those kinds of things.
01:58All right. Yeah, he's got it bad. There is an issue with that, though. Why? Well, he probably can't afford that.
02:03Well, no, you can't afford those. Oh, right. Okay. He needs to make more room for more Porsches, you see.
02:09Porsches. Yeah. Yeah. That's what I was waiting for. Oh, all right. Okay. Well, we can relieve him of non-Porsche stuff. Yeah.
02:17Whether we do come back with a Porsche and an overdraft or an air-cooled lawnmower, who knows?
02:23But Di's Welsh rabbits, here we come.
02:27Now, Di, tell me, we're surrounded by your garage, mate. Are you sort of into everything?
02:32Everything. Yeah. It's whatever I wake up in the morning and think I like that or something.
02:36But, yeah, mostly air-cooled stuff. Yeah. Oh, okay. So what? What? VWs?
02:40Started off with VWs and then migrated into other air-cooled... Porsches?
02:43Porsches. Yeah. Yeah. Well, who knows what we're going to see in there? Who knows? I'm looking into the darkness.
02:47I might find some things I've forgotten about. Is everything for sale, Di?
02:50Not everything. No. Not everything. Okay. So anything that we need to avoid?
02:55I'll let you find out what's not for sale. Okay. All right. You can probably guess. Let's do that.
02:58So, look, mate, what we'll do is we'll have a little rom-age, yeah? Yeah.
03:02And I might call you in on a few things, as always. Okay.
03:05Yeah, but in the meantime, we will have a good look round and then at the end, hopefully, we'll have a haggle.
03:11Perfect. Have a dig. All right. Cheers, Di.
03:13Cheers, Di. Thanks so much. Thanks so much for letting us come here and have a rom-age.
03:16Which way, Captain? All right, we'll go in here. In you go.
03:19Di, we'll see you later. See you later. Thanks, mate.
03:21Oh, my word, look at all them.
03:22Di's first shed is, as promised, an eclectic mix of cars, curios and trinkets.
03:30We'll start, though, with an American classic.
03:34Let's feast our eyes.
03:36Go on, what is it?
03:37Okay, not only is this a great-looking car, but also a Rocket 88 was perhaps the subject of the first rock and roll song.
03:48The Oldsmobile Rocket 88 is an iconic American saloon, which went through numerous facelifts in its 50 years of production.
03:59As Ike Turner sang in his classic track, Step in my Rocket and don't be late.
04:05Wow, look at that inside there. That is absolutely fantastic, isn't it?
04:12Oh, isn't it, mate? I just love it.
04:14And I'll tell you what I also love is the little touches of Von Dutch graphics.
04:18Oh, yes, yes.
04:19Type vibe. Do you know what I mean?
04:21Yeah, true, true. But also, I like the price-diminishing roof lining.
04:26That could be all part of a deal.
04:27Yeah.
04:28Let's have a look at the lump.
04:29Now, so we've got V8. I don't know what size it is, but it looks big enough to pull this old thing along.
04:35And it's got Oldsmobile Rocket on the rocker cover.
04:38Well, there we are.
04:39I love it, I love it. But we just have a quick look at these Porsches, aren't we?
04:42Come on, then.
04:42Okay.
04:46Di's Porsches range from the rusty, to the crusty, to the dusty.
04:50But we'll start with one which has been severely exfoliated.
04:55What is that one?
04:56That's a 356.
04:57It is right-hand drive, but I don't know whether it's original right-hand drive or not.
05:02If it is, it's very rare.
05:04I'd just be interested in that. Where's Di?
05:07Tell me about it. Is that a 356, then?
05:09It is, yeah. 1960, UK right-hand drive car.
05:11Okay, so it is a UK right-hand drive.
05:13It is UK right-hand drive.
05:14So it's an original right-hand drive.
05:15Wow. Okay.
05:16Because the panel fit's exceptional, I think.
05:18I mean, it looks good, doesn't it?
05:20Yeah, especially considering it had a crash in the front when it was about two months old.
05:23Oh, okay.
05:24Like a lot of them probably did.
05:26Yeah, so if you dig too much into it, you'll find a few little reminders of that.
05:30Crinkles.
05:31So is that, that's the next resto, is it?
05:34Yeah, I was meant to be putting that together quickly to go to France in it for the Le Mans Classic.
05:38But, uh, time, et cetera.
05:42Mate, I know the feeling, do you know what I mean?
05:44I try and get fast to restore as many things as possible, but he's so slow.
05:48Oh, thank you very much.
05:49Do you know what I mean?
05:49That is a lovely car, though.
05:51Isn't it, Jay?
05:51Once it's finished, that will be utterly amazing.
05:54A 356 like that, uh, restored.
05:58I mean, I have no idea on prices.
05:59How much would that be?
06:00Oh, anything between, uh, 75 to 100, I think.
06:07Is it?
06:07Yeah.
06:07Really.
06:08Something tells me that's just slightly out of our price range, but for a completely different beast.
06:14Shall we have a look at a Volvo and come down to earth?
06:16Yes, yeah, let's do that.
06:17Cheers, mate.
06:18Excellent.
06:19Thank you so much, Di.
06:20Brilliant.
06:20All right, let's have a look at the Volvo.
06:22So, this is a 1969-1970 Volvo 164.
06:30Nicknamed the Swedish Rolls-Royce, the 164 was Volvo's attempt to move into the luxury market.
06:37Heated seats, a six-cylinder engine, and bumpers so huge that reindeers trembled.
06:43As a biker...
06:45Yes?
06:45This is my nemesis.
06:47Is it?
06:47All right.
06:48Okay, this is the devil incarnate.
06:50Okay, Volvo drivers and motorcyclists, we still don't go together, I'm afraid.
06:56I'd like to see you behind the wheel of this so that you can bring this in from out of the cold.
07:01No, no, no.
07:01You'll be driving it, okay?
07:03Oh, are we getting it?
07:05Yeah, credibility...
07:05No, credibility-wise, right, I cannot be seen driving that.
07:10I love it.
07:10I think this is great.
07:11Di.
07:13Look, I'm not a convert, but talk to him about this.
07:16Volvo 164, is it 1969, 70?
07:19Yeah, 69.
07:2069.
07:20Yeah, so one of the earliest.
07:22Yeah, maybe so.
07:23But I can see it's down on that side.
07:24I'm presuming we've just got a bit of a flat.
07:29The tyre's ripped apart.
07:30The tyre just exploded while it was sat here.
07:33That's how safe these cars are.
07:35There it was, at high speed, going down the road.
07:38No, it wasn't.
07:39It just was sitting here and went bang.
07:41Oh, well.
07:42Di, can I just ask you, is this car relatively all right?
07:45Yeah, the brakes need going through because it's been sat for a fair while.
07:49Why did you buy that?
07:51Family classic.
07:52Family classic.
07:53Okay.
07:53That's all you need to say to me.
07:55Family classic.
07:56Yeah.
07:56Very good selling point.
07:57Okay.
07:57Very good selling point.
07:58Yeah.
07:58Family classic.
08:01Moving outside.
08:02Or perhaps not quite yet.
08:08Inside, Di obviously enjoys his automobilia.
08:11He's got a Mark II chopper that's caught the rust virus.
08:15I mean, that is one of the worst I've ever seen.
08:18And a variety of signage, both aesthetic and useful.
08:22That's for your small room office door.
08:27That's so unfortunate.
08:28No, no, it's only wee-wees allowed.
08:30Exactly.
08:31That's nice, though.
08:32A big Michelin.
08:33Yeah, it is, yeah.
08:34Isn't it?
08:34Yeah.
08:35Eh?
08:36That could go very well with other signage.
08:38I think so, definitely.
08:40There is another shed over there, isn't there?
08:42Come on, let's go visit.
08:42Come on.
08:43But I tell you what, there's a lot here at Oldsmobile.
08:47Let's hope it's the right price.
08:51Taking advantage of a break in the rain, we spot a rather different Porsche.
08:56Oh, now look.
08:57Here is a Porsche you probably can afford.
08:59Well, yeah, but at the same time, it's probably in worse a nick than most of the Porsches in
09:04there.
09:05Yeah, I think actually.
09:06Do you know what, it is amazing, just in the same way Porsche with tractors.
09:09Yeah.
09:10I mean, Lamborghini started with tractors.
09:12Yes.
09:12Yeah, and look where they are now.
09:14Yeah.
09:14And Porsche obviously had the diversification of tractors.
09:18Well, that's right.
09:18I think post-war as well, tractors were a good thing to get into because you had a big push
09:26for agriculture to get back to where it was before the war.
09:30Absolutely.
09:31And small tractors helped that push so very much.
09:35Absolutely.
09:35And fully restored, those are beautiful things.
09:37Yeah, they are.
09:38But a bit too far gone for us.
09:39Yeah.
09:40There's a Fordson over there.
09:41Yeah.
09:41Which I would look at closely, but it's just started to wails on us.
09:45Yeah.
09:46Sorry, rain.
09:47Come on.
09:48Andrew, I think that'll...
09:49No, no, we're all right for tractors.
09:51And we're better to shelter than Dye's last shed.
09:54Oh, hang on.
09:55What's that, a Chevelle?
09:56It's Ford Maverick.
09:59Right, well, I'm not going to lift it too much.
10:01No, don't.
10:02It's going to fall off.
10:03Yeah, don't worry about it.
10:03I'm not going to lift it very far.
10:04OK, so there's a V8 in there.
10:06Yeah.
10:06But this is...
10:07All right.
10:08This is how, well, I would describe it to you as...
10:13Work in progress.
10:14That's right.
10:15There's very little interior visible.
10:17It may be somewhere, I don't know.
10:19And the bonnet needs a lot to be desired.
10:21So does the paintwork.
10:23But at the same time, I can see that it's definitely worth restoring.
10:27Do you know what I mean?
10:27Yeah, a bit of 1970s compact muscle.
10:31Yeah.
10:32What, the V2?
10:33Volkswagen pickup.
10:34Yeah, that.
10:35Love them, mate.
10:35That is nice.
10:36Now, these are the precursor to your modern truck cab pickups, aren't they?
10:42Yeah, absolutely.
10:43You know, it's a bay window rather than a splitty, isn't it?
10:45Yeah, it is.
10:46So probably an early bay, so late 1960s, but showing the signs of galloping rot.
10:52Although, happily, not around the gutters there.
10:55So, actually, though it looks a little bit crispy, it's probably not that big a resto compared
11:02to some.
11:04Love it.
11:06It's rather sweet, isn't it?
11:07Yeah.
11:07I mean, it's faded.
11:08Yeah, that's really nice.
11:10Well, I mean, you know.
11:11But so am I.
11:12That's what you were going to say, wasn't it?
11:14Faded charms.
11:17Okay, now look faded.
11:18Yes.
11:19Let's just, shall we just recoup in our, or no, recap?
11:24The Rocket 88.
11:25Okay.
11:26The Rocket.
11:26You love that.
11:26That's my favourite.
11:27Yeah.
11:28Right.
11:28It's got to be the right price.
11:29That's right.
11:29But then there's the Swedish contingent.
11:33All right.
11:34The Volvo.
11:34There is a Volvo.
11:35Volvo 164.
11:36It's quite nice.
11:38Porsche's no.
11:39A lot of money.
11:40And a lot of work.
11:41Yeah.
11:42Oh, and also, let's not forget the no dumping sign.
11:47Okay.
11:47Let's not forget it.
11:49Oh, I think I suddenly might have done.
11:52Come on.
11:58Now, we might as well get it out of the way.
12:01Oh, yeah.
12:02Go on.
12:02Okay.
12:03So, the 1969 Volvo 164.
12:06A beautiful machine, yes.
12:07Beautiful, but, you know, it's going to take a lot of recommissioning.
12:10What would you let that go for?
12:12That's three and a half.
12:13Okay.
12:16Blimey.
12:17All right.
12:17Can I just say that compares to the Oldsmobile Rocket?
12:21Okay.
12:21Tell me about the Oldsmobile Rocket.
12:23Yeah.
12:23It's a very original car.
12:25How much would that be?
12:26That's 11 and a half.
12:29Right.
12:29Or nearest offer.
12:31O-N-O.
12:31O-N-O.
12:32Yeah.
12:32O-N-O.
12:33O-N-O.
12:34O-N-O.
12:34O-N-O.
12:36There were a couple of signs.
12:37There was one cycle detour.
12:39Yeah.
12:40£25.
12:41Okay.
12:42I'm going to.
12:43That's for you, right?
12:44Okay.
12:44Well, yeah, or we can sell it on either way.
12:47Hey, look, there's a faded castrel sign over there.
12:50Square.
12:51Yeah.
12:52£45.
12:54Okay.
12:54There's a Michelin sign at the back there.
12:59Is it available?
13:01If you were buying some other stuff, I'd let it go.
13:04Okay.
13:04What would you go for?
13:06£90.
13:07Okay.
13:08Okay, let's get down to business.
13:10Can I just mention the no dumping sign?
13:13How much is that?
13:14£25.
13:15How much for the Volvo, really?
13:18Still three and a half until you come to me with a different number.
13:21Three?
13:22£3.250.
13:36We're down in wet and windy Wales with Di and his eclectic set of cars.
13:42He wants three and a half grand for an elderly Volvo, but we want to get it for less.
13:49£3.250.
13:50I can't believe I'm about to buy a Volvo.
13:54To make it easier and more palatable for Henry, would you go £3.1?
13:59£3.150.
14:00£3.150.
14:01I think that's good.
14:02Yeah.
14:03Yeah.
14:03Excellent.
14:03Perfect.
14:04Fabulous.
14:06Thanks, Ty.
14:07Welcome to Volvo ownership.
14:08Oh, dear God.
14:10Next day, the Volvo arrives with a boot full of signs.
14:20Can I just say, I have never, ever thought that I would walk out and say I bought a Volvo.
14:26You bought a Volvo.
14:28I like Volvos.
14:28It's actually really nice.
14:29What?
14:29I like them.
14:30This is a particularly nice one.
14:32Mate, they're robust.
14:33Yeah.
14:34They're quick enough.
14:35Yeah.
14:35They're very comfortable.
14:36Yeah.
14:37They're very dependable.
14:38Yeah.
14:38And above all, they have a high degree of neglectability and keep going.
14:44And this one's a six-cylinder, so it's going to be fast.
14:46This is a sin.
14:47I've had two six-cylinder Volvos.
14:50I know you have.
14:50And both of them have been fantastic cars.
14:53They do have the aerodynamics of a brick.
14:55I mean, I don't go for the styling, but I've never, ever regretted buying a practical vehicle.
15:01And the interior, I think, is lovely.
15:03I love the controls, the dials, and there's two red ones in the middle.
15:07I have no clue what they're for.
15:09They look like out of an aircraft.
15:10Don't touch those.
15:13God has spoken.
15:14Even Jellybean has heard the almighty.
15:18It's all right, Jellybean.
15:19Okay, who is about to make us run for cover.
15:22Why?
15:23Because we're admiring a Volvo.
15:25Eh?
15:26Okay.
15:27As they say in Wales, we've brought the good weather with us.
15:33Look at that on that car now.
15:36You're checking for leaks, isn't you?
15:38That's amazing, Ray, isn't it?
15:44When the rain stops, we go under the bonnet.
15:49I look at this.
15:50This is rather lovely.
15:51Yes.
15:51And then I look down.
15:52Yes.
15:53And that, it's worse than I thought it was going to be.
15:55Yeah, and me.
15:56I disagree.
15:56It's not that bad, isn't it?
15:57You don't think that's bad, Hal?
15:58No.
15:58It's actually quite clean.
15:59I look at the corrosion on all these hoses.
16:01And the carbs look like they haven't been run in 50 years.
16:04I think if we take off the air filter and also take off the distributor cap,
16:09check the points, get any corrosion off them,
16:12just check that the pistons lift in the carbs,
16:15and then pop some fuel in or maybe a bit of easy start,
16:18see if we've got a spark.
16:19We need some action on the back.
16:21I love your optimism.
16:22Well, no, we must always remain optimistic.
16:25This has been off the road for 26 years,
16:27so over a quarter of a century of sitting around.
16:30If you'd been sitting around for a quarter of a century,
16:32you'd look a bit rough like that.
16:34Beware.
16:34A bit like Henry.
16:35And on that note, I'll leave the dancing queens to it
16:40while me and Bean dream up a suitable Swedish-style road trip
16:44for our Volvo.
16:46Points are created.
16:48Are they?
16:48The distributor is not good news.
16:51Cub in white fur.
16:53That'll sink off a bit of sandpaper, then.
16:55Yeah.
16:56And nor are the carburetor pistons.
16:58So this one moves up and down.
17:01But this one does not.
17:04Alan sandpapers the oxide off the points.
17:08Fuzz disassembles and lubricates the carb.
17:12And Skid inspects the interior.
17:15The little gemstone warning lights in here look like new.
17:19They're a lovely colour.
17:21The points are tiny switches that activate the spark plugs.
17:25It takes several trips to the nail bar and another shower.
17:29But finally, Alan gets them clean enough.
17:31Yes, yes, we've got a spark, massive sparks.
17:34Fantastic.
17:35Huge sparks.
17:35Excellent.
17:36Big sparks I've ever seen.
17:37Right, so I've now got the pistons moving freely.
17:42So I'm just going to give them a little bit more lube, Al.
17:46And then, hopefully, these will act as they're supposed to.
17:51A dash of oil later.
17:53We're almost ready for a full test.
17:56In goes a gallon of fuel.
18:00And several more squirts of lubricant for good measure.
18:04Are we going to try it?
18:05Yeah, go on.
18:06Try it.
18:06Give it a go.
18:08Yes.
18:08Come on.
18:09That's fired.
18:09Nearly.
18:10And again.
18:11Go on, Al.
18:12Yes, yes, yes.
18:13It's going to go.
18:15That is so near.
18:16So close, man.
18:18Yes, yes, yes.
18:21Alan!
18:22Oh, the agony.
18:24I think we've got a fuel supply issue.
18:28Yes, yes.
18:29And the ecstasy.
18:30Yes, yes.
18:33Or it would be if it wasn't for this.
18:37The smoke.
18:39It's lovely.
18:40And this.
18:41Look at the soot on the gravel.
18:45What have you done to my gravel?
18:46What's happened is the wadding has blocked the exhaust.
18:50That's why it wouldn't start.
18:51And then it's blown apart.
18:53The wadding's come out and now it runs.
18:54I think it's worse under the car, actually.
18:56Yes, it's even worse.
18:57Don't look underneath.
18:59The wadding is supposed to deaden the sound.
19:02But this exhaust is clearly exhausted.
19:06What am I going to tell the wife?
19:08Well, I thought your Volvo leaked on the driveway.
19:10Yeah.
19:11It's actually quite funny.
19:12I think so, too, Alan.
19:13At least you think it is.
19:16Next day, Fuzz removes the wheels and gets under the car to assess the damage.
19:31With the exhaust, we need the very rear section.
19:34It goes through a right angle.
19:36So we've got a transverse silencer that kind of runs just behind the rear axle.
19:42And then it's the section after that that needs replacing.
19:46But also, we need the just plain pipe section from the manifold through to the first silencer here.
19:55That rusted through as well?
19:55Well, it looks like it's been repaired at this point.
19:59We could probably get away without that, but we definitely need the back one.
20:04So at least if we can get the rear section, then we are partway there.
20:10So the exhaust doesn't look good, but nor do the brakes.
20:13I can see two brake flexi-hoses.
20:18Those probably will need replacing.
20:21Right.
20:21So to get this on the road and basically functioning, I think we need all of those brake flexi-hoses.
20:28So there's two at the back.
20:30Eight at the front, apparently.
20:31Eight at the front.
20:32Yes, it's counting them up.
20:33Eight.
20:33Then also, we need the rear exhaust section.
20:37That's the minimum we need.
20:39So just the back box and the right-angled pipe.
20:42Get the wheels and tyres done.
20:44And hopefully, with a bit of tuning, we should be able to get this driving and running.
20:50Sounds good.
20:50What is exhaust?
20:51Maybe we can get a whole exhaust system for it.
20:53Maybe, but I'm just worried in case it might be very expensive.
20:59Uh-oh.
21:00Now, Bean has just been talking to me about when she is going to be able to have a ride
21:08in the back of the volley.
21:09I wanted to take a look at the braking system, so we've got...
21:12There isn't one?
21:13No.
21:13No, there are parts missing.
21:15Pipes missing.
21:16Quite a few bits missing.
21:17Yeah.
21:17We don't quite know what we need.
21:20Right.
21:21So we're trying to ascertain that.
21:23But also, these tyres are very, very old, so they need replacing.
21:27Right.
21:27And the wheels are a bit scruffy, too.
21:29And I think we should powder coat the wheels silver.
21:32Yeah, I guess.
21:32And then put the hubs on.
21:33What do you think?
21:35Yeah, put any trims that we've got for them on.
21:37Yeah, if we've got any trims.
21:38Have we got any trims?
21:40There's stuff in the boot.
21:41Marvellous.
21:42Okay.
21:42So, look, we're getting there.
21:44Do you know what?
21:44It's growing on me slightly.
21:46You know, rather like a sort of boil.
21:49Yeah.
21:49Do you know what I mean?
21:50Alan and Skid remove the wheel surrounds.
21:54Oh, that made me jump.
21:56Yeah.
21:57And before you can say, if I do all four, will there be a discount?
22:01They've been sent over to Banbury to the powder coaters.
22:04Stage one is to get them into the shot-blasting booth, where 25 years of rust are quickly sent packing.
22:17Once all the residue's been sanded off, they're given a quick inspection.
22:21Looks like Henry's dropped us a nice set of steel wheels.
22:24Pretty battered this time.
22:26Got a bit of scar in, but we'll try and take care of that for them.
22:28Nice bit of primer.
22:30Still the top coat, and they should be good to go.
22:32Really cleaned them up really well.
22:34So, boys should be happy, hopefully.
22:40Back at the ranch, it's Skid's turn to get busy.
22:44Cleaning the signs we'd picked up from Di.
22:47His weapon of choice is a lot less abrasive.
22:51Furniture polish.
22:53You might associate it with chippendale and mahogany, but it's just as good for metal.
22:59The colour of the castrel sign gets an immediate boost.
23:04And the blue and yellow of the Michelin sign really starts to zing.
23:09And talking of colour...
23:11Back in Banbury, the wheels have been primed and are now being powder-coated silver.
23:17Powder-coating is more expensive than conventional spray painting, but it gives a hard-wearing finish.
23:24Important for items like wheels that are going to get a lot of abuse from grit, gravel and general road dirt.
23:31I think they'll be nice.
23:33Just cleaned them up.
23:34Definitely a lot better than the way they were.
23:35They were very rusty when they came in, so...
23:38Should look fresh.
23:39Nice chrome booty ring.
23:41Centre cap.
23:43I think they'd be well away.
23:44Really transformed the car.
23:45So the wheels are looking good, but the bills are starting to stack up, and there's more to come.
23:55I've got an idea for a Swedish-themed road trip, but I'm beginning to worry.
23:59I've met my Waterloo.
24:01We had a Volvo nightmare yesterday.
24:18The engine ran, but the exhaust exploded.
24:22Unless we sort it out, we're not going to be able to take it on a Swedish-style road trip.
24:29What you need is not what you're settling, Kit.
24:31Yes.
24:32That is exactly what I need, Al.
24:34We haven't got one.
24:35No.
24:35That's what's happened.
24:36Ha, ha, ha, ha.
24:39You can be a motorbike any day.
24:41I know, Al.
24:41You're grovelling around underneath.
24:43The car's always filthy underneath.
24:46You can always put your bike in the sitting room, can't you, Al?
24:49Yeah, we do regularly.
24:49Not in my house, you can't.
24:54I got in trouble for putting motorcycle engine parts in the dishwasher.
24:58Did you?
24:59Yeah.
24:59How unreasonable.
25:01And an engine in the oven.
25:10What I could do with is a bit of wiggle-age, actually, please.
25:13Left or right, or up and down?
25:15Try it every way you can at the moment.
25:17OK, well, I'm going to go left and right.
25:18Actually, that's good.
25:19That's good.
25:20Yeah, keep doing that.
25:22Now, I'm not going to hit you in the face with it, am I?
25:24No, you're not.
25:24If you do, I'll let you know.
25:27Keep going.
25:27That's it.
25:28Keep going.
25:28Feels loose, though.
25:29Keep going.
25:29That's it.
25:30Come on.
25:31That's it.
25:32Yes.
25:33Yes.
25:34Yes.
25:35Is it off?
25:36Yes, it is off.
25:37Right.
25:37Good.
25:38Good.
25:39Oh, you're back.
25:41We've got bad news.
25:42You need a whole exhaust system up to the manifold.
25:49That is an absolute travesty.
25:51It's quite rusty, isn't it?
25:53Quite?
25:54Yeah.
25:54The main problem being getting this apart, it's all just gone all over the place.
26:00It's got all these boxes as well.
26:02I know.
26:02How much is that going to cost me?
26:03Look, the first one I looked at is stainless steel.
26:05We might be able to get a mild steel one cheaper with all the rubbers, clamps, and everything.
26:11It's $399, but that's a stainless one.
26:15Oh, that's not too bad.
26:16I thought you were going to say $1,390.
26:18Oh, hello.
26:19I didn't wonder where you were.
26:20I've been underneath.
26:21Oh, have you?
26:21It's been grovelling around under there while you've been making the tea.
26:25Where's the tea?
26:26I haven't got a tea.
26:27Was that 400 quid including the header?
26:29It's from the manifold back.
26:31So as long as the manifold's okay, that will then mean that it's lovely and shiny underneath there.
26:36It's a nice selling item.
26:37It'll bring the price up.
26:38No, it won't.
26:40It won't.
26:40Is that my biscuit down there?
26:42Hang on.
26:43Wait a second.
26:44Hang on a second.
26:45How's she got a whole ginger nut?
26:48It's because it's been left lying around.
26:50Who left that there?
26:52Fuzz.
26:53Not me.
26:53Look at her.
26:54She's getting fuzzy by the moment.
26:56Normally she has a tit bit.
26:58That, honestly, man, she's going to inflate like that.
27:00That's going to look like me.
27:02Yes, exactly, Fuzz.
27:04Remove your tea and biscuit.
27:05It would take a long time to get that far.
27:07Anyway, thanks for the tea.
27:10Okay, great.
27:10Well, look, things are moving on, aren't they?
27:12Yes.
27:12I should take Bean for another walk, shouldn't I, now she's eaten a whole ginger nut?
27:15Yeah.
27:16The other big job is the brakes.
27:20While we're waiting for the new exhaust, we've decided to get them fixed at a local garage.
27:26Run by, you guessed it, Chopper Roy.
27:29We've got to pull the wheels off.
27:32We'll pull the old callipers off.
27:34We'll bring the new stuff out.
27:36Start building it up, I suppose.
27:37Sounds like a plan.
27:40Roy's mechanic, Kyle, takes off the first wheel and heads straight for the brake calliper.
27:46These have seen better days.
27:48As you can see, the conditions are quite patinaed.
27:50We've got some fresh ones to go on, so I wouldn't be too worried about them.
27:55The new callipers are originals that have been totally refurbished.
27:59That becomes this.
28:02The lines that carry brake fluid to the callipers are a mixture of hard copper piping and flexible rubber hosing.
28:10Some can be taken off and scrubbed.
28:12There's quite a bit of corrosion on the threads here, so we'll be cleaning these up in order to reuse them.
28:18Others need to be replaced with new point work.
28:21We keep loads of spare bits and pieces.
28:24It's just scrap that we've got.
28:25But as you can see, we've got a perfect length here, so this will be absolutely brilliant for what we've got.
28:30After half an hour of spannering, Kyle has fitted and plumbed in a new old calliper and is ready to fit the pads.
28:38So, one outer pad, one inner pad.
28:41And the pins that keep him in position.
28:43So, we'll just put these remaining clips, and those just hold those pins in place.
28:49One there.
28:50And that is one corner all finished.
28:51We'll now move on to the master cylinder.
28:54Kyle refits the wheel, then drops the car down and removes the current master cylinder.
29:01Once again, he's going to replace it with a refurbished original.
29:05A lot of the automotive market, it gets a bad name and it gets a bad reputation, but a lot of the stuff is actually reused.
29:11He attaches the old brake fluid reservoir, and then puts the new unit back in the car.
29:20What have we got left, haven't we?
29:21Yeah, so it's just, um, finish off, tighten these up.
29:24We've got to, uh, glue the brakes, put on two more brake lines, tighten up the califers, and then that'll be it.
29:30Perfect.
29:31Ready for dinner?
29:32Indeed I am.
29:33Job done.
29:33Definitely.
29:34Crack on.
29:34Two days later, our Volvo arrives back in the shed with its repainted wheels and refurbished brakes.
29:47But that ain't all.
29:49Oh, I've just tripped over something.
29:51Yeah, so that is what's called my day's work.
29:54Well, actually, my morning's work, I suppose.
29:55OK, so look, we've got the exhaust pipes.
29:58Now, also, over there, I see some trims.
30:02So we've got to pop those on as well.
30:04I tell you what, mate, once this is clean and washed and lovely, it's going to look a peach, isn't it?
30:10Yeah, it's coming together.
30:11It really is coming together.
30:13I think this is a lovely underrated car.
30:16It is.
30:17First things first, Fuzz starts his automotive workout by jacking up the car.
30:24It would help if we, too, had a car hoist, but sometimes you have to suffer unto truth, and he soon gets an unexpected reward.
30:34Oh, look, some sweeties.
30:36That's very kind of them, isn't it?
30:38Isn't it, sweeties?
30:39Yeah.
30:40It's a little something for the person who's got to actually fit it.
30:42Yeah, who's going to fit the whole thing.
30:44On their own.
30:45On their own?
30:45Yes.
30:46Those sweets are great.
30:47We, obviously, will have our hands free to drink tea and eat biscuits.
30:51I'll tuck them in your little boiler suit.
30:53There you go, lovely.
30:54There you go.
30:54Just so when you're underneath like that, you can gain access.
30:58Yeah.
30:59The new exhaust looks complete, but it's not quite the same.
31:03What I'm worried about is this front end, if you see what I mean.
31:08Yeah.
31:08Oh, it's taken a bit of a shortcut, isn't it?
31:10Well, it has, yeah.
31:10Do you think that'll be all right?
31:12As long as there's nothing in the way, it should be fine.
31:13Yeah.
31:13Well, let's find out.
31:14Fuzz goes down under and attaches the new pipe to the exhaust manifold, but it's soon
31:21obvious there's a problem.
31:23What is that?
31:24That.
31:25Is that gear change linkage?
31:28Yeah, it is.
31:29So we can't have it rubbing that.
31:30No.
31:31We're going to have to use the old downpipe and then match it up to the rest.
31:35The good news is that that old downpipe, I think it's OK, it was OK.
31:44Got a problem.
31:45What?
31:45This exhaust does not clear the gear linkage for the automatic gearbox.
31:51That one has that extra bend on it because it's for an automatic, this is for a manual.
31:57The solution is to reuse the downpipe section of the old exhaust.
32:01We've got to get this box off and retain all the rest here.
32:05The next half hour is a cacophony of banging, soaring, grinding and cursing.
32:17Yes, ah, I mean, oh, wait a minute, hold on.
32:24There we go.
32:27People moan about the price of exhausts and stuff like that, but do you know, if I were
32:31one of those people working in an exhaust centre, I would think that actually I'm doing
32:37a very good job and I should get paid rather well for it because it's a very mucky, horrid
32:44job.
32:47The Volvo has triple baffle boxes and six fitting points, so it takes forever for first
33:00to sort the new plumbing.
33:02Oh, sorry.
33:03Oh, mate.
33:04But finally, after an hour and a half, it's done.
33:08It's needed tweaking, it's needed fettling, it's needed a prod, it's needed a push and a
33:13pull, but it's under.
33:14It's needed sleeving as well, hasn't it?
33:15It has, yeah, a bit of sleeving, yeah.
33:16Hang on, we're three quarters of an hour late for lunch.
33:20I know, I'm terribly sorry, Henry.
33:22Come on.
33:23I'll make sure I do it more quickly next time.
33:25Oh, mate, honestly, you are amazing the way you've done that.
33:28Look what's left this detritus.
33:29Well, all we can do now is put the rims on, check the brakes.
33:34Change the headlight rim.
33:36Change the headlight rim.
33:37Yeah.
33:37And then it should go.
33:40Go for a drive.
33:41Come on, then.
33:42Let's have lunch.
33:43At last.
33:44God, my.
33:44It just took hours, Matt.
33:53Right.
33:54After lunch, we make swift work of the rims and headlamp surrounds.
33:59God, that looks great.
34:01Here, have a cab.
34:08Look at that.
34:09Oh, that looks amazing, Al.
34:11Properly lifted, hasn't it?
34:12Look at it.
34:13Lovely.
34:14Oh, man, proper bling.
34:16Old school chrome.
34:17I never thought I'd get excited about a Volvo, but I have now.
34:21So we've got the pipe, we've got the bling,
34:24and I've got an idea for a Swedish-style day out.
34:27Coming up, we get full-on Scandi.
34:30Let the dog see the rabbit, then, Sophia.
34:32Let's have a look at them.
34:42I can't believe I'm about to buy a Volvo.
34:44One month ago, against my better instincts,
34:47we bought a Volvo 164.
34:49Thanks, Todd.
34:50Welcome to Volvo ownership.
34:52Oh, dear God.
34:54The heavens washed it.
34:56The silencer blew it.
34:58Look at the soot on the gravel.
35:01And then we spent time and money sorting all the issues.
35:06Today, I've planned a whole Swedish-themed day
35:09to celebrate its completion,
35:11starting with some national dress.
35:14What is very famous about Sweden?
35:17Volvo.
35:18Yeah.
35:19ABBA.
35:20ABBA, exactly.
35:22Now, I have, online, got us some ABBA hats.
35:27I want a blue one.
35:29Oh, OK.
35:30If you have a...
35:31I'll swap.
35:31OK, swap.
35:32OK, all right.
35:32Is Al having a blue one?
35:33He can have what he wants.
35:35All right, there we go.
35:36So we've got to get in the vibe,
35:37because we normally do wear hats,
35:39which are commensurate with the country
35:42that we're talking about.
35:43You could have got a big one.
35:43These are...
35:44I know, they're a little bit tight.
35:47Alan looks surprisingly odd.
35:50Right, OK, now, listen.
35:51This is our challenge.
35:54What's Sweden are famous for?
35:56They love...
35:56Reindeer.
35:58A flat pack.
35:58A flat pack.
35:59Right, OK.
36:00Now, I have to say,
36:01I've just noticed that this one is made in China,
36:04but I've crossed it out
36:05and put made in Sweden.
36:07OK.
36:07OK.
36:08OK.
36:08Just to make you feel at home.
36:09Right, the whole idea,
36:10these are two identical chests of drawers.
36:13What we're going to do
36:14is you are going to have one,
36:18me and Fuzz are going to have the other.
36:20Oh, no.
36:20And the idea is we have 15 minutes
36:23to erect this three-draw experience.
36:27Right, come on, then.
36:27Plus, we must finish the tea.
36:29Right?
36:30OK, so, this is your one.
36:33Yeah, I'm on the tea.
36:36Go on, then, Bjorn.
36:38Get ready.
36:39Can we start?
36:39OK, on your marks.
36:42Get set.
36:45Assemble.
36:46Quick.
36:47Right, let's keep those.
36:49I'll leave that there so we know.
36:50You chuckle rubbish out.
36:53It all started with a designer
36:54working for IKEA in the early 1950s.
36:58He couldn't fit a table into his car boot,
37:00so he took the legs off
37:02and then reassembled at home.
37:04Bingo.
37:05A billion-dollar idea.
37:07The flat pack.
37:08We need a number one.
37:11What's a number one?
37:12I reckon it's one of these.
37:13There seems to be panic going on over there.
37:15The idea of cheap, broken-down furniture
37:18that fitted in your boot was a big hit.
37:21We are a third through the time.
37:24Allowing IKEA to overtake Volvo,
37:27the Sweden's most valuable brand.
37:29Another screw E, please.
37:34Oh, no!
37:36Don't what you've done!
37:37I didn't do anything.
37:38Yes, you have!
37:38You've just knocked that off.
37:42It's broken now.
37:43We're not even three-dimensional.
37:44It's only a bit odd.
37:45The perfect vehicle to take your flat pack home
37:50while listening to ABBA on the radio
37:52was, of course, a large Volvo.
37:55Can we just point out we've finished our carcass?
37:58You lot are way ahead.
38:00We're on to the draw.
38:01That wasn't very nice, wasn't it?
38:05And that's it!
38:06Hold on.
38:06Finish!
38:07I was going to have that at home.
38:09Al wanted that.
38:11He was going to ask you if he could buy it off you.
38:13We've just got a new bedroom carpet.
38:14It would have been perfect.
38:17That would have been two nice bedside cavernets, wouldn't it?
38:19Yeah, it would have been perfect.
38:20I think we should call it a draw.
38:22What do you think?
38:23Well, this is going to be a draw.
38:26Now, can I just say,
38:28we are going to finish our tea
38:30because you've finished yours.
38:31Me and Skid, yeah?
38:32We're going to have a nice little tea drink
38:34and then we're going to get in the Volvo
38:35and we're going to celebrate our victory
38:38over the flat packs, yeah?
38:40Yes.
38:40By having some Swedish...
38:43Meatballs!
38:51My Swedish mate, Sophia,
38:54lives about 12 miles away
38:55so this will be our first real outing
38:58in the Volvo.
38:59This would have been very exciting in 1969.
39:02Well, it would have been, wouldn't it?
39:03It would have been exotic.
39:06Six-cylinder, smooth, silky.
39:08Yeah.
39:08Lovely.
39:09And, of course,
39:10with things like safety belts
39:12and a little needle
39:14that you can put to target your speed on.
39:18Well, it's reliability that was the key, wasn't it?
39:20Yeah, it was, totally.
39:21You know?
39:22And comfort.
39:23Yeah.
39:24And strength.
39:25Strength.
39:25Strength.
39:26Comfort.
39:27Durability.
39:28Durability.
39:29All the adjectives would describe me.
39:33It all adds up to boring.
39:34Yeah, that's right.
39:36It does add up to boring.
39:37The company was originally owned by SFK,
39:44a ball-bearing manufacturer.
39:46They came up with the name Volvo,
39:49Latin for eye roll.
39:50And that's what you get in a Volvo,
39:52a smooth, though not exciting ride.
39:55It's an amazing place.
39:57But talk of ball-bearings,
39:59we've reached Sophia's place.
40:01Do you need a hand getting up here, Henry?
40:03It's quite steep, isn't it?
40:04I'm surprised you're not wheezing.
40:06Don't be like that.
40:08I hope she'll be bearing a different sort of ball.
40:12Sophia is not only Swedish,
40:14but a very, very, very good cook.
40:15Fantastic.
40:16So I thought, ooh,
40:17who could do us some meatballs?
40:19And she certainly can.
40:21The problem is gluten.
40:23I'm always a problem.
40:24Yeah, you are.
40:25He's gluten-free.
40:27Is that, you can't?
40:28No, because you do have a bit of bread
40:30in the, or some breadcrumbs in the...
40:32Oh, yes, I can't do that.
40:33That's a shame, isn't it?
40:34That's me out of the equation.
40:35Yeah.
40:35It needs more for you to feed your...
40:37Ahem.
40:39Thanks very much.
40:40Well, I'm really pleased I brought him along.
40:43Can I ask you one thing
40:44before we get the meatballs out?
40:45Yes.
40:45Do you drive a Volvo?
40:47I do, yes.
40:48I have it always done.
40:49There you go.
40:50Let the dog see the rabbit then, Sophia.
40:52Let's have a look at them.
40:53Are they genuinely sort of traditional?
40:56I mean, do people eat them in Sweden?
40:57People do eat them in Sweden.
40:58They do?
40:58Yeah, absolutely.
40:59And ideally, you should be having a cream sauce with it,
41:03a gred sauce, and some...
41:05Gred sauce?
41:06Gred sauce.
41:06And some potato.
41:08A treat.
41:09Fabulous.
41:11Holy moly.
41:12It's top notch, isn't it?
41:13It is, isn't it?
41:14Top notch.
41:14It's absolutely amazing.
41:15You're not interested in another Volvo, are you?
41:17No.
41:17No.
41:18Good.
41:18OK, we'd better find out from Chopper Roy
41:20how much this one's worth, shall we?
41:22OK.
41:22Eat up.
41:23Oh, and pickle for you, Skid.
41:24In the afternoon, the man himself comes round.
41:31Will he find it as tasty as we found the meatballs?
41:35Well, come on then.
41:36I mean, you know it anyway.
41:37Yeah, I do.
41:38Yeah, I've seen all under it and round it.
41:39Yeah, you've seen underneath it, baby.
41:41Yeah, yeah, it's quite good.
41:42Yeah, yeah.
41:42OK, so is it quite sound underneath?
41:45Yeah, it's solid.
41:46You'll notice that underneath now includes an exhaust horse.
41:49Exhaust as well.
41:50That's right, yes.
41:51A bit quieter.
41:52I don't know how much we've spent with you.
41:53That's up to you to decide.
41:55But all I know is we bought it.
41:57Don't be like that.
41:58No profit, quick return.
42:00That'll be.
42:02No, listen.
42:03Right?
42:04We bought it for $3,150,
42:06plus we spent 400 quid on the exhaust.
42:11Yeah, right?
42:12So that's $3,550 plus whatever.
42:18Oh, dear.
42:18Is it looking close?
42:20It's looking like a calamity.
42:22Do we have negative equity?
42:23I think Skid might have been right.
42:25Yeah.
42:25Shall we just allow ourselves $250?
42:28Yeah.
42:29OK, all right.
42:29It's going to be somewhere around here.
42:30OK, so we'll allow ourselves to...
42:31So $3,550 plus $300,
42:35that's $3,850 it stands us in at.
42:39OK.
42:39What do you reckon it's worth?
42:41Chopper Roy.
42:42They go anything from $4 to $5.
42:45$5, $5.5 would buy a really nice one.
42:47If you want to get rid of it sooner than later,
42:49it's going to be $3,995,
42:51and you won't get one for less,
42:54I wouldn't have thought.
42:55Oh, well.
42:56They're pretty thin on the ground now.
42:57Hang on a sec.
42:58So, hang on, that's $145.
43:00Yeah.
43:00Something like that.
43:01Yeah, minimum.
43:01Have I worked that out rightly?
43:02Yeah, minimum.
43:03OK, so look, it's a minimum of $145 profit.
43:06I think you'll get more.
43:07I think we should advertise at $4.5.
43:10Yeah.
43:10And see where we go.
43:11What do you reckon?
43:12That's a good idea.
43:13I mean, you know,
43:13at least we'll probably all get a bag of chips out of it.
43:16Yeah, so look,
43:17we're either going to make $645 quid or $145 quid.
43:20Yes.
43:21Either way,
43:22you're buying the chips.
43:23Or you can tell me what you sell it for then,
43:25or do me bill.
43:26Yeah.
43:27That's the way to do it.
43:29Chopper Roy,
43:30can I just have a quick word?
43:31Yeah, got to go.
43:46Yeah, got to go.
43:47Yeah, got to go.
43:48Yeah, got to go.
43:49Yeah, got to go.
43:50Yeah, got to go.
43:51Yeah, got to go.
43:52Yeah, got to go.
43:53Yeah, got to go.
43:54Yeah, got to go.
43:55Yeah, got to go.
43:56Yeah, got to go.
43:57Yeah, got to go.
43:58Yeah, got to go.
43:59Yeah, got to go.
44:00Yeah, got to go.
44:01Yeah, got to go.
44:02Yeah, got to go.
44:03Yeah, got to go.
44:04Yeah, got to go.
44:05Yeah, got to go.
44:06Yeah, got to go.
44:07Yeah, got to go.
44:08Yeah, got to go.
44:09Yeah, got to go.
44:10Yeah, got to go.
44:11Yeah, got to go.
44:12Yeah, got to go.
