00:09So, here's the thing, you know
00:12sometimes it's a tough life
00:14being a developer and one of the tough things
00:16is when you've got a show
00:18like X10 and then just a few
00:20weeks later, about three weeks later, you've
00:22got another show, GDC
00:23and here we are in GDC
00:25and what we're showing off this time is
00:27two big
00:29new things, one is
00:31the GUI
00:33and you know, the graphical
00:35user interface, that's what GUI
00:37stands for, can there be anything
00:39more boring than that? You know, we
00:41normally ignore it and you know
00:43the last thing you show is your GUI
00:45and on Fable 1 and 2
00:47our GUI was, it was lists
00:49of things, list after list after
00:51list of clothes and weapons
00:53and level up
00:56up things and ability spending
00:58stuff and what we realized is that
01:00whilst a lot of
01:02core gamers are fine
01:04with lists, they're okay with lists
01:06and they're used to this
01:07a lot of people that really can't
01:10be bothered to sort through
01:13325 items
01:14to select the clothing they want
01:16to wear, were just not
01:18using it at all, they just wouldn't use
01:20it, people didn't change their costumes, they
01:22they didn't level up
01:24properly because they found it so
01:26painful to use those lists, so we said
01:28right, Fable 3, no lists
01:31imagine
01:32that Fable 1
01:34and 2 was like DOS
01:35where you had you know
01:38these scrolling things come up
01:39Fable 3 is like Windows
01:42everything that we had in a 2D
01:44list is now in the world
01:45so you've got this thing called your guild chambers
01:47in your guild chambers
01:49there is your butler, your manservant
01:51he is
01:52he
01:55tries to do the best thing for you
01:57his voice is actually the voice of
01:59John Cleese, one of the
02:01top people in Monty Python
02:04he is incredibly funny
02:06he's going to be suggesting
02:07the right things for you to wear
02:09the weapons for you to use
02:10he's going to be commenting on some of your
02:12morally questionable decisions
02:14that you've made as king
02:16and making sure that
02:18within these guild chambers there is a dressing room
02:20that dressing room is like an old
02:22Victorian mahogany dressing room
02:24as you play the game your shelves
02:26and your clothes build up
02:27you can walk up to it and say
02:29I like the look of that, I want to wear that
02:32you're not walking through a list, you're doing it visually
02:34you've got an armory
02:36and in that armory
02:37there is these racks of weapons
02:39that you have crafted
02:40because remember in Fable 3
02:43we've got the ability to craft weapons
02:45as you use them
02:46within your armory as well
02:48there is also additional crafting that you can do
02:50which we're not talking about just at the moment
02:52you can do things like spell weaving
02:55which we've already talked about within your armory
02:57you've got your treasury
02:58in your treasury you have a mountain of gold
03:00that you can rub your
03:02use touch to rub gold
03:04over your naked body
03:06if that's so
03:07if it appeals to you
03:09you've got your achievement room
03:12where visually you can see your achievements
03:14that's all great
03:16also in your guild chambers
03:18we have the war room
03:20in your war room is your map
03:21the map in Fable 2 was rubbish
03:23it was a horrible little round thing
03:26the map in Fable 3
03:28is a living dynamic map
03:31where you can see the world still going on
03:34it's a full
03:35all the world simulation is still on there
03:37you can watch your wife
03:38walk out of her house
03:40walk into your best friend's house
03:43spend 20 minutes there
03:45and walk out back again
03:47you can see all these things
03:49that makes you feel more kingly
03:51and more powerful
03:52ok at the start of the game
03:55and this is a
03:56in fact this is a spoiler I'm giving you
03:58and you know it's a spoiler warning
04:00at the start of the game you just think
04:02it's just a normal map
04:03you just think oh it's just like a map
04:05I've seen in other games before
04:07you'll be intrigued that this is this
04:09strange continent over the other side of the world
04:12which we called Aurora
04:14and then as we
04:15as we just like any other game mechanic
04:18just within Fable
04:20or within other games you
04:21you measure
04:22how often you unleash a new feature
04:26we are
04:27unlocking new features
04:29within that map
04:30so one of the things that you can do for example
04:33you can see where all your friends are
04:35in the Fable map
04:37because you're all linked together
04:39in a kind of social way
04:41so I can see oh
04:43you're over in Millfields
04:45at the moment I'll just pop in there and see what you're up to
04:48so you've got that
04:49you can do things when once you become king
04:51with that map suddenly you realize
04:53that this map you can zoom in
04:55you can see this world you can start adjusting things
04:58like right I want these people
05:00in this region to pay me lots
05:01of gold and if they don't pay
05:04me lots of gold I'm going to pass a judgement
05:06on these people
05:07I'm going you know I want this place
05:09here I want to tear down all those factories
05:12and I want to plant trees again
05:13so it's where you do a lot of your kingly
05:17sort of global things
05:18or you can say
05:19right those people over there
05:21I'm going to sneak up on them
05:23and I'm going to see what's actually going on there
05:25you know visit in person
05:26so there's a lot of this layered functionality
05:29which on this GUI map
05:30which we are unlocking as the game goes on
05:32it's definitely not RTS
05:34it's all about how it makes you feel as a ruler
05:37as a king
05:37I think of it as
05:39at
05:41best
05:42the most detailed is like Napoleon
05:45standing over his
05:47over his you know where all his troops are
05:50you know but
05:51it's not necessarily you are actually physically moving
05:53those armies but you can make some judgements
05:56to do that
