00:00PEGI 18
00:31E' a culmination of everything
00:33And the clock is ticking
00:34These are the final, final hours of Tomb Raider
00:51Tonight we have a large audience coming in
00:53We decided that rather than going to one of our partners
00:57And just doing a live stream
00:58We decided you come to us
01:00We have a big area in the studio
01:01Let's open it up
01:03No we've never done it
01:05Because right now we've got black curtains
01:07Up around a specific area of the studio
01:09Which is our next big thing
01:10Only a select few people have been allowed to come in
01:13And everybody's heavily NDA'd
01:14And now we're gonna bring 80 plus people into the studio
01:17Well it's exciting
01:18To bring those people into the studio
01:20They're the fans, they're the people who love it
01:22And we want people to be a part of our experience
01:27On one half the studio all that is going on like crazy
01:30But basically in half the studio
01:32You guys are just pounding
01:34Working out every last glitch
01:35Every last bug
01:36Making sure that it's all just done
01:38And perfect exactly
01:40For your certs on Friday
01:42What happens when a game fails certs?
01:45Then things start getting sweaty around here
01:48You're dicing with death right there
01:50Or you might be missing a release date
01:51That's how big a day this Friday is
01:53Yeah it's huge
01:54If we submit and they come back and say
01:55Hey there's maybe 35 things that we'd like to change
01:57Then as a studio we'll change
02:00We'll improve them
02:00Or there's small things that they say
02:02This experience might be better if you just fix this little thing
02:05Then of course the team are literally sitting there
02:07And we're waiting for that to happen
02:08And there has been games I've worked on
02:10Where we've submitted
02:10And within 24 hours they'll get kicked back
02:12And they'd say
02:13Hey here
02:14You guys are crazy
02:15You shouldn't have submitted it
02:21So there are 80 people
02:22Yeah
02:23In the office
02:23Right now
02:25You're
02:26Four and a half days away from delivering this thing
02:29And they're all strewn about
02:31What are they all doing?
02:32So we have guys working at a very prioritized hit list
02:36So we say okay this is the most egregious thing that we've noticed lately
02:39We'd like for you to focus in on it
02:41What are you guys debugging here?
02:42Looking at some menu transitions
02:44Oh yeah we want to make sure everything feels snappy all the time
02:46Menu transitions
02:47If I had a nickel for every time
02:50One of the toughest things with Lara as a character is her hair
02:55You try to simulate hair in a video game
02:57Oh yeah
02:58It's not always exactly the way it would be in real life
03:00But that's something that I think the fans really point that out
03:04And they want Lara to look as good and as believable as possible
03:07So even in the home stretches we're trying to sweeten it and make you believe it
03:11So I spend a ton of time playing the game
03:14So while everybody else is busting their butts trying to make it work
03:17You're having fun
03:19That's basically what you're saying
03:20There's about 80 people
03:22Right
03:23That are all still busily working
03:25Yeah
03:25This last week before the game goes to cert
03:27Absolutely
03:28One of those groups is called the what group?
03:30The OMS group
03:30And what does OMS stand for?
03:32OMS is an acronym for Oh My Shit
03:37And what does that mean exactly?
03:39When you're into the high octane moment
03:41The only response that we were challenging the team that it could come back with
03:44Was I would exclaim
03:45Oh my shit that's awesome
03:47Right
03:48I couldn't even cuss properly
03:49It could have been the OMHG
03:52The Oh My Holy God team
03:53Yeah, yeah, yeah
03:54But Oh My Shit
03:55Oh My Shit
03:55It resonated
03:56So many companies focus on the explosions, explosions, explosions
03:59And we love explosions
04:00I mean there's plenty of them in the game
04:01But it's also about sometimes that implosion moment
04:04That time where you actually feel like you're part of that world
04:09We have an early example in the scavenger den
04:11Very early in the game
04:13Where the camera is about six inches from the back of her head
04:16As she's in this claustrophobic moment
04:17As the ceiling gets lower and lower
04:19And the water gets higher and higher
04:21And the torch
04:21You're worried is it going to go out
04:23And as you suck in for that moment
04:25If it's resonating with people
04:27As we've seen it resonate here
04:29You actually watch people who are claustrophobic
04:31Kind of lean back in their chair a little
04:32And kind of react
04:33And that's exactly what an LMS team is about
04:43You feel confident that in four days
04:45In four and a half days
04:45This thing is like ready to ship and ready to rock
04:48And going to blow people's minds
04:49How about we look at that
04:50I got a board that will tell us
04:51Oh yeah
04:51Where's your board?
04:52Right over here
04:53I'm a stats guy
04:54Right
04:54Okay
04:54It's got to be like the McNamara version of reality
04:57Right
04:58And getting things done
04:59Like it's very NORAD like
05:01With the update on where we are with bug count
05:02So we have the number of days that we want to count down for
05:05The priorities of what people are given against
05:07And then an overview of how many things are remaining to be resolved per person
05:11Carrie's got her work cut out for her
05:13Come on Carrie
05:14Yeah
05:14Ultimately we have to figure out
05:16How do we hit the quality on a predictable timeline
05:18Right
05:18So right now we're trending towards being able to hit that in 12 days
05:23But you need to deliver in four and a half?
05:25Correct
05:25So what does that mean?
05:26I need to go right now
05:29Where's your head out right now?
05:30Knowing that in four days
05:32Yeah
05:33It's got to be completely done
05:35I'm super critical of what we do
05:37You know, you tend to be perfectionists
05:38I'm absolutely that way
05:40It's more like
05:41This is leaving now
05:42Yeah
05:43You're done working on it
05:44Because time's up
05:45And you're like
05:46But there could be one more thing I could do
05:48It's a weird feeling
05:50Because it's been part of our lives for a very long time
05:53How long have you been on it?
05:54Well
05:54Definitely four years
05:55Four years
05:57Four years
05:57Four years
05:58That's insane
05:59I was young
06:00Yeah
06:01Fresh face
06:01I was young then
06:02Yes
06:03No bags, no grey hair
06:04I had a soul
06:06It's been a rollercoaster ride
06:07And during that time we've been around the world
06:09We've gone to shows
06:10We've shown press
06:11We've given hands-on
06:12We've had community events
06:13We've been in San Diego with you at Nerd Machine
06:15We've seen people excited to see this and play this game
06:19And it's been awesome
06:22It's not just about Lara's arc
06:24It's about the arc of people who've come in to the roles
06:28We've had people come in as animators and move up to the highest levels in their profession
06:33Along these four years
06:35So people have grown in these roles
06:37Families have expanded
06:39Kids have been born
06:40But we're coming to a point now where we're probably 70, 80 plus days away from launch
06:46And this phase has come to an end
06:48It's been awesome
06:49With less than a week to go before console certification
06:52The last few bugs to squash
06:54And a general lack of sleep all around
06:56This production is definitely going to go down to the wire
06:59Will they make it?
07:00Join us next time on the final, final hours of Tomb Raider to find out
