00:31La Croft
00:32These are the final hours of Tomb Raider
00:42We're in downtown San Diego
00:44We're at Nerd HQ
00:46Fans, the public, will get to play the game
00:48For the first time ever
00:51Are you nervous?
00:52This is the most nervous time
00:54Of the entire game
00:55This is huge for us, this is the first time
00:57We're giving anybody the opportunity to put their hands on the game
00:59It's not finished yet
01:00It's hard to send it out into the world like that
01:04It's a little young, it's a little fresh
01:05When you put it in the public's hands
01:07You're getting a very raw, unfiltered
01:10Like hey, this is what we love and this is what we don't
01:12You'll start to read about it now
01:14You'll start to see it online
01:15You'll start to get people's perspectives
01:17We're making sure that we make it the best thing
01:20That we can for the fans
01:21And these are the fans
01:22Why make an origin story?
01:23You could just kind of continue with the Lara Croft
01:26Tomb Raider saga
01:27But you didn't
01:28Why?
01:29We didn't start with the idea of doing an origin story actually
01:31We started with the idea of doing something fresh
01:34There haven't been very many games that have the opportunity
01:37To go back and tell a true origin story
01:39There is very few games like this
01:42In the history of the Tomb Raider franchise
01:44There has not been a female lead writer
01:47Until now, Brianna Pratchett
01:49For me, I didn't think of it like we needed a female writer to do that
01:52Brianna just nailed it
01:54Brianna Pratchett
01:55Yeah
01:55Does it take a woman to know a woman?
01:58It probably helps
01:59But I don't kind of think about it as much as everyone else does
02:02I tend to think of myself as being a writer first
02:04There is some of me in her, absolutely
02:06She's very bookish, she's very in her head
02:08I went to public school, I actually learned archery
02:10She knew it as well, I heard
02:11We bring up our ladies properly
02:13And I genuinely studied Egyptology
02:16I wanted to be an Egyptologist
02:18No way
02:18I've always been a huge fan of kick-ass females
02:22I mean, I grew up on Terminator and Aliens
02:25You know, fighting aliens in the future
02:28I thought that was what girls did
02:30It's great to be here at Comic-Con
02:31This is my first time
02:33People are really responding to this kind of new Lara
02:37The fans have been great, they've been very supportive
02:39I want to kind of live up to their expectations
02:43I grew up going to fantasy and science fiction conventions
02:47Now here I am looking at a Tomb Raider poster
02:50On the side of a building
02:52For a Tomb Raider game I have written
02:54I can't quite process that, but it's very cool
02:58Lara's actions affect her character and her emotional state
03:02And so the first kill for us was a big thing
03:11It's not comfortable to watch and it shouldn't be
03:14Oh God
03:18And it is about picking yourself up
03:21Despite the fact that you're scared
03:22You can't have bravery without fear
03:25In video games, you're kind of tweaking all the way down to delivery
03:30Yeah
03:31Blessing or curse?
03:32Games development can be quite harsh on narrative
03:36You know, you can lose levels or characters
03:38You have to be amazingly flexible
03:40When is the script finally finished?
03:42You get insight when you see it through your audience's eyes
03:45So once the story gets to a point where we can start sharing with people
03:48Where we can start putting it on the screen
03:50Then we start to understand
03:51Are people getting from it what we want them to get from it?
03:54The feedback is that it's really fulfilling our primary goals
03:57Of delivering a story that introduces people to a Lara Croft
04:00But also just takes them on an amazing adventure
04:17John Stafford, you're kind of the dialogue typist
04:21Word monkey
04:23The words that you've been speaking for so long
04:26Yes
04:26From everything that I've been through
04:28That's been extremely emotionally draining and painful
04:31I have him to blame for
04:32So we'll have words later
04:34About it
04:35What were the challenges?
04:36Stepping into the heart and mind of a character like Lara Croft
04:39Who we've known for quite some time
04:41Player's expectation is
04:43You want to just jump right in and guns blaze
04:44Roller, you know, I'm awesome
04:46I'm awesome
04:47We won that
04:47That's what video games basically allow gamers
04:49Seriously, right?
04:49To feel, I am awesome
04:50The challenge for me is to show her vulnerable
04:53We shipwrecked on an island inside the dragon's triangle
04:56We still have a very playable game
04:57But also show real emotional character
05:00It's very difficult to do that in game
05:01Please come and get me
05:03You can do this, Lara
05:04When you have really extreme circumstances
05:07You have really extreme emotions
05:09What the hell?
05:12You can't hide from me, I'll ride it
05:15It's all about her survival
05:16She's basically willing to do whatever it takes
05:20There's people trying to kill you
05:23You know, things are really extreme
05:24Listen
05:26I'm gonna get you out of there
05:27I promise
05:29I promise
05:30I didn't want any lines to sound gamey
05:33There was a good collaboration of making sure that really that didn't happen
05:37That's very difficult writing, you know
05:39How do you write a line that isn't just like
05:42I should go there
05:43Yeah
05:44You know, I mean that's
05:45I bet there's something hidden in that crate
05:47Yeah
05:48I want you to love this game
05:50In a way that really feels like the first time you played it
05:54But do it in a way that people have never seen before
05:57For me, it's crazy not to look at this as an opportunity to really start that dialogue
06:03This is the game of our careers
06:05This truly is the first time to sort of say, okay, this is it
06:10Well, now that we know a bit more about what it takes to reimagine an icon from the ground up
06:14We're headed east to go behind the sounds of Lara's journey
06:18A journey that is heightened and shaped by cinematic score and sound design
06:22I hope to see you on the next episode when we talk to who's behind what we're hearing in Tomb
06:26Raider
