00:08I'm Pete Ellis, I'm the art director for Fortnite.
00:11What I do is look over all the art, make sure it's all sort of cohesive and fitting into what
00:16we think really makes sense as a complete visual package, making the game look great.
00:22When we started developing Fortnite, we thought we wanted a really, really terrifying, over-the-top, scary experience.
00:28And during that time, we sort of learned the gameplay was shifting towards a more lighthearted, fun, unrealistic childhood fantasy
00:38exploration thing.
00:39And we felt it was a good idea to change up the art style.
00:44Well, the husks were one of the very first things we designed back when the game had its really scary
00:49art style.
00:49We wanted something more unique and different, so our concept artist, Ben Schaefer, took the face and basically pulled the
00:57skull out of the face, like through his own mouth.
01:00So this was super freaky looking when it was in a more realistic style.
01:04And then when we converted it to the cartoony style, we really softened it up, but we left some of
01:09those almost gory details in there.
01:12But they still played really well because it felt really unique having the sort of skin hoodie flapping around on
01:18the back.
01:19It's pretty hilarious.
01:20So we decided to keep it.
01:22People come in all different shapes and sizes, so we thought, why not do that with the husk as well?
01:27And all of these decisions came from where the sort of game design was going.
01:31Like, what did the game need to be fun?
01:34What different types of enemies and functions did we need to fulfill with the husk art?
01:38We knew we wanted a guy who would do a ranged attack, but we didn't want to have somebody shooting
01:43guns.
01:43So we thought, well, what about a guy who throws stuff at you?
01:45What could that be?
01:46And eventually we came to the conclusion, well, he could be like a baseball player.
01:50Instead of baseballs, he throws bones.
01:52And then we've got another guy who's meant to be a bit more slow moving because he's explosive.
01:58And we wanted something to do that big area of effect damage burst.
02:01So we've got a big bat husk who sort of lumbers around carrying his big propane tank.
02:06Part of Fortnite's tone is that, you know, we're not taking ourselves too seriously.
02:10So zombies can be funny too.
02:12We've got to take advantage of the opportunities for humor when they come up.
