Un lungo videodiario su Fortnite.

00:06Hello everyone and welcome to New Week Fortnite Live. My name is Kale Smith. I am one of the community
00:13managers here at Epic Games. We have the whole community team up here today. We have Will. Will, how are
00:19you doing? Doing alright. Also one of our community managers, Natalie over there. Another one of the community managers. Natalie,
00:26how are you? Alright, I'm doing good.
00:30We got, there we go. We also have Cameron Winston. He's back this week to talk about weapons. Cameron, our
00:39systems designer. How are you, Cameron? I'm excellent. Thank you for asking me. Thank you. That's good. That's good. So
00:46this week we're going to talk about weapons and traps within the game. We're going to explore a couple of
00:53different, well I should say more than a couple. We're going to explore quite a few variants that you guys
00:58will see.
00:58Some of you that are in OT might or might not have come across some of these weapons. But we
01:04want to show some of the diversity that the game has to offer. Just a small taste. And we're going
01:09to have Cameron here explain some of these things as well.
01:12We have a community spotlight. We have a community spotlight. We're going to get into as well as traps. Traps.
01:19So before we get into that, Will, you went to ECGC. ECGC. Okay.
01:27It's like a tongue twister.
01:28Yeah. Eastern Conference. East Coast Game Conference. There we go.
01:33Yes, I did. How was that?
01:35Yeah. So East Coast Game Conference is an annual conference here in Raleigh. Probably going on, geez, I don't know,
01:43a few years now. It was here my first year at Epic. I've been here four years. So it's been
01:48here at least that long. I think maybe a little bit longer than that.
01:50And basically what it is, is it's a place for developers and aspiring developers to meet up. There's a lot
01:57of sort of panels and different things that you can go to.
02:01And so I was on with Wes Phillips. He's also on the Fortnite team. He's going to come play a
02:06little bit later. And we were on a panel about actually about game marketing.
02:10So there's a lot of aspiring developers there. You know, they're building their game. But of course, once you have
02:16an awesome game, you got to figure out how to how to get it out to people and how to
02:19get them interested and stuff like that.
02:21And so we had a lot of fun doing that. The cool thing about East Coast Game Conference is that
02:26because it's a local thing and because we've been going, you know, pretty much every year the last several years,
02:33you know, we actually see a lot of people that have, you know, been involved in some way or another
02:38with Fortnite.
02:38So two years ago, it's actually the first place we're outside of the building that we showed Fortnite to somebody.
02:47So we kind of brought it there. It was a bit of a surprise.
02:50We had a little like a little booth and people would come up to it and we would talk to
02:55them and then kind of like sneak them off in a back room.
02:57It was like the very first time where like the team was like pretty nervous, like, hey, you know, obviously
03:01it's, you know, we're still early on.
03:03So it was very, very early at that point. And, you know, try to see like, hey, this thing that
03:07we're working on, like, do people, do they dig it?
03:09Do they want to play? And, you know, what's cool is a lot of those people that played there then
03:15came to our Storm Chaser event in Raleigh last year.
03:19They have, you know, we saw a lot of them at ECGC yesterday, same people, and some of them are
03:24even coming to visit us tomorrow.
03:26So it's cool because, you know, Fortnite for us has been, you know, a little bit different in the sense
03:33that like a lot of our sort of early community building efforts we've been able to do in person.
03:37So ECGC was just another place that we did that. And it's cool. You bring people in the game, but
03:43before you bring them in the game, you meet them in person.
03:45And so that's kind of a unique thing that we've been doing.
03:48Were people's expressions, like when they figured out that we were showing off Fortnite, were they like, like, kind of
03:53like nervous and like, oh my God, wait.
03:56Like when we initially showed it a couple of years ago, yeah, there's people that are definitely surprised, right?
04:02You know, because we had, you know, we had initially shown our trailer some time ago and then hadn't said
04:07a whole lot about the game because we were, you know, the scope of the game changed over time.
04:12And we, you know, we really decided it was something we want to invest into in a big way and
04:16make it into this awesome thing.
04:18So, no, I don't think people were expecting to see it there, you know, but then when they did, you
04:24know, it was this awesome, you know, kind of exciting moment
04:26where, you know, people went and it was cool because, you know, it was, you know, it wasn't like the
04:31big, you know, reveal that you have at like a game show
04:34or something like that.
04:35It was a little bit more intimate in that it's like, you know, 15, 20 people in a room, they
04:40play, they hang out and talk to us.
04:43And that was even, you know, before we started doing the Storm Chaser events, which is pretty much the same
04:47vibe that we get there, right?
04:49Like everybody plays, they hang out, you know, it's a lot of fun.
04:53We get feedback from people.
04:55And so, yeah, that's the way that we've been doing things.
04:57Yeah.
04:58By that Sunday, like people were lining up trying to get those last tickets to come see us because it
05:03was like word kind of slowly spread out.
05:05It started out, everybody was like, what do you mean Fortnite's here?
05:08Like they just figured Epic was there in the engine capacity that we typically are.
05:12But word got out and then we had people coming up to us like, oh, my God, give me a
05:17ticket to play.
05:17Yeah, that's pretty awesome.
05:20That's pretty awesome.
05:22So you mentioned Storm Chaser's event.
05:25Yes.
05:25Last week we gave a call to action basically like, you know, we wanted a shout out to the people
05:31that are watching to let us know where they want the next Storm Chaser's event to be.
05:39Yeah.
05:39So, you know, we have something that's essentially a topic every single week that we ask people to use Fortnite
05:46hashtag,
05:47Fortnite Live and talk about it.
05:49And so last week, you know, we've been doing the Storm Chaser events for a while.
05:53We have some planned for this year, but not all of them.
05:57And so we're just trying to figure out where do people want us to go?
06:02Where do they think that we should head?
06:04We heard some interesting places.
06:06Chicago.
06:07Somebody mentioned somewhere in Iowa.
06:09You know, there was a few places.
06:12Ham said Denmark.
06:13I mean, did anyone suggest Alaska, like I said last week, because Alaska would be pretty cool.
06:19I mean, maybe we could go.
06:24Hey, anywhere there's a bunch of people that want to play Fortnite, I'm willing to go there.
06:29That's kind of how I feel about it.
06:33Bears?
06:34And salmon.
06:34Oh, sure.
06:35Okay.
06:36I don't know.
06:37Are they known to be big gamers?
06:39Bears and salmon?
06:40I don't know.
06:40They're people.
06:41People.
06:42Everyone loves Fortnite.
06:43Where are llamas native to?
06:45You heard it here first.
06:46Bears and salmon are people.
06:48No, people.
06:50People who live in Alaska are people, and there's also bears and salmon.
06:53I would love to go to Alaska.
06:55I've heard it's beautiful.
06:55Yeah, that's the whole point.
06:56That's why people should ask for it so we can go there.
06:59All right.
06:59I'm with you.
07:00Maybe we can give everybody in the chat wants to go to Alaska.
07:02That would be cool with me.
07:03Yeah.
07:03Hashtag go to Alaska.
07:05But this is the kind of conversation we're going to keep it going.
07:08We're not going to decide in the next few days or anything where that event is going to be.
07:12We're going to take some time with it, but we do want to continue to hear more about that.
07:16One of the things that we do when we do these topics is that people who are showing up at
07:21Twitch chat every week,
07:22people that are talking with us on Twitter and stuff like that,
07:26we're bringing some of them into the game.
07:27We're making storm chasers.
07:30This week we brought in three more people into the game.
07:32Yep.
07:33Taco Pizza Hunter.
07:34Pretty cool name, I think.
07:35D Miller Wireless and Joe Moore all came into the game this week.
07:40There's people that have been asking in the chat, are we doing codes today?
07:42No, unfortunately we're not doing codes today.
07:44There will be time for codes again in the future,
07:46but we're actually getting pretty close near to the end of OT2.
07:51So this will actually be the last week on this stream that we bring new people in
07:55or announce the people that we brought in.
07:56But we do want people to keep talking and using the hashtag FortniteLive to keep talking to us
08:01because we're going to do stream next week, which will be our stream where we wrap up online test two.
08:06And next week what we want to hear about in between now and then on the FortniteLive hashtag is
08:11what would you most like to know about Fortnite?
08:13We're going to try to answer some questions, things that you guys would want to know.
08:17Let us know and then next week when we do the stream we're going to get to some of those
08:20questions.
08:21What would you most like to know about Fortnite?
08:24That's a big one.
08:25That's a big one.
08:26Hashtag FortniteLive.
08:28Yes.
08:29All right.
08:29That's the way.
08:31So last week we did our first Community Spotlight.
08:34Yes.
08:37And this week we have a brand new Community Spotlight member, Cooties.
08:42Yes.
08:42And Natalie's going to talk about Cooties.
08:45Awesome guy.
08:46I got to play with him.
08:48Was it Monday?
08:49Monday night I played with him.
08:50We played a couple hexes and we got some stuff we're going to show you off.
08:55But Cooties, all about Cooties.
08:58Natalie, can you tell us a little bit about it?
08:59So we picked Cooties from our community of players in the Alpha because he spent like a whole lot of
09:05time playing.
09:06I think he's one of the top five people who spent time playing in the Alpha.
09:10And in addition to that he didn't just, you know, play all that time and not give us anything back.
09:14He's like spent a lot of time in the forums.
09:16Forums, yeah.
09:16Really breaking down his feedback into categories for us and just really going in depth.
09:20So we, of course, appreciated that a great deal having that, especially from somebody who spent so much time going
09:26as far as they can in the game.
09:29But yeah, that and in general he's just a really helpful player.
09:32So that was a good criteria to spotlight him.
09:37But yeah, Cooties, he gave us a lot of cool information.
09:40He, you know, we asked him what his favorite class was.
09:41He told us about the Outlander.
09:43You know, he kind of dispelled a myth that the Outlander can't move around as fast as a ninja or
09:49whatever.
09:49He's like, actually, I feel like the Outlander can do anything because, you know,
09:52I can get all these resources so quickly that I can build traps that help me bounce around the map
09:56really quickly or whatever I need to do.
09:58And he felt like the Outlander is such a good support role for the team in terms of being able
10:03to give them resources as well as, you know,
10:06great in combat and quick in all different ways.
10:10And he likes to build traps.
10:11So, yeah, one of the things you guys are seeing right now on screen, this is in the game I
10:16was with Cooties.
10:18And he built this house of traps that basically jettisons the husks into a pit.
10:27Yes.
10:28And we're going to replicate it today on stream just to show you guys how awesome it is.
10:33But when I was in game with him, I had not seen it built.
10:37And you had mentioned, like, he gets into the zone when he's, like, building these traps.
10:43Oh, yeah.
10:43Yeah, something that he described in the interview is, like, how he kind of gets inside the mind of the
10:47husk by actually when the storm spawns in the map,
10:50you can see these little swirling purple tornadoes.
10:53And that's where the husks are essentially going to spawn from.
10:56So you can kind of, he goes out to those spots on the map, and he starts looking towards the
11:00atlas,
11:01thinking about what's the shortest, you know, what's the path of least resistance.
11:04And that's how he builds out his base, thinking about which direction they're coming from exactly,
11:09why they would attack a certain angle.
11:10So he's like a husk whisperer or something.
11:14That's a Photoshop way to do that.
11:17But, yeah, another thing that I thought was really interesting that he did is a lot of our players are
11:21catching on to this pyramid technique
11:23where they're building metal pyramids around their base, and it's a little bit more resource efficient
11:28because you're using, you know, less shapes to make your base than you would if you were just making a
11:33box
11:33or your typical building shape.
11:35And in addition, it's easier to navigate your base and see what's going on.
11:38Well, in his case, he doesn't complete the pyramid at the top anymore.
11:41He actually closes it off with a trap so that if anybody does land on top, they're just immediately hitting
11:46a trap.
11:47I mean, he's got all these great ideas.
11:48People should check out the blog on Fortnite.com for more of his stuff.
11:52What you guys are seeing right here is this hybrid pyramid that he has built.
11:57He has a back entrance, and that's one of the things, the challenging things about building a pyramid,
12:01is you kind of want to close it off, making it a symmetrical pyramid shape.
12:05But he actually has that square top, and I believe you told me he puts a trap up on the
12:10top.
12:10Yes, yes.
12:11So if anything happens to walk up on top of it to attack the atlas, it takes damage.
12:15Or get lobbed there or anything, yeah.
12:17Really cool stuff.
12:18But, you know, like I mentioned about how many hours he played, there was five players total that we did.
12:23So something that's shown off in the blog is a graffiti.
12:26Graffiti.
12:26A graffiti's name.
12:27And these were like an Easter egg that the developers put in.
12:30One of our concept artists, Ben Schaefer, had put together these awesome graffiti tags
12:35for the five players who played the most time in OT1, I believe, is the criteria for that.
12:41And it was put in like an industrial map just for them to kind of discover.
12:45And I believe they even snuck it into the release notes, like really deep in the release notes if they
12:49were reading it.
12:49And I think that's how one of the players discovered it.
12:52He's like, I know this is in the game.
12:54And Cooties was actually talking about how all of these guys ended up becoming friends after this
12:58because one person found it, and then they invited the other players into the game to check it out.
13:02But it was just a really cool thing.
13:04So now they all have their own graffiti tag as a part of the game.
13:07That's pretty cool stuff.
13:10Cooties and Cassange?
13:12I think Cassange is the one that made the thread.
13:14But Cooties has this picture where he's like dancing.
13:17They're all slash dancing in front of it.
13:19Those are my favorite.
13:20I wish they were higher res pictures because I wanted to share that.
13:23They're like dancing in front of it.
13:25But they were really, really excited.
13:29So the community spotlight member, again,
13:34this week is Cooties.
13:35You guys can check it out on our website, fortnite.com.
13:39And he gave away codes.
13:39That was another thing to mention.
13:40Oh, yeah, he did.
13:41So in addition to those other new storm chasers,
13:43we actually have five people from, well,
13:46Reddit or people who actually read the blog post.
13:49He was going there and handing out codes to people
13:51who told him the best reason why they want to play Fortnite.
13:54So that was kind of a fun reward for him
13:56and whoever actually read his interview.
13:59Yeah.
13:59So be on the lookout for the next community spotlight.
14:03And if you see Cooties, tell him that he's awesome because he is.
14:07All right.
14:08So we are going to start getting our game loaded up.
14:13We're going to get Wes up here to take over and play.
14:18In the meantime, Cameron's going to talk to us about weapons a bit.
14:27So, Cameron, there's a lot, there's a lot, a whole lot of weapons in the game.
14:31Yes.
14:32And I probably haven't even scratched the surface of, as a matter of fact,
14:36we were at lunch and they were talking about a new weapon that Bill was working on.
14:42And we were just mind blown about that.
14:45But there's a lot of weapon diversity in the game.
14:49So can you kind of talk about what type of things the team wanted to offer players
14:54when it comes to weapons in the game?
14:56Yeah.
14:57So we're obviously, we're a game with, you know, we have the rich shooting tradition here at Epic.
15:03So, of course, you were going to do guns.
15:05But also, like, we wanted to kind of offer everything from, you know, melee weapons all the way through guns.
15:10And, of course, that encompasses a lot of different types of gameplay.
15:13We have, you know, katanas, we have hammers, and we have axes.
15:18But we also have, you know, like laser guns and stuff like that, which is really cool.
15:21So we wanted to kind of give players sort of like an option of what kind of deadly weapon do
15:26you want to use
15:27to approach a certain situation.
15:29And we're trying to make it so that different weapons have different strengths and weaknesses.
15:32Right.
15:34And I know one of the things you had mentioned to me before was the feeling of, like,
15:40you could be, because of the type of world that we have,
15:44you could use, like, a broom as a weapon.
15:46Like, whatever you can find, we want to make that kind of an aspect of it.
15:50And so, you know, what were some of those inspirations for the weapon design?
15:55Well, if you look at, like, our weapons, we kind of run the gambit from, like,
16:00things that, you know, after some sort of horrible world-altering situation,
16:04like we have in Fortnite, you know, going from the,
16:08oh, I found this in my garage, and now it's, you know, a broom, like you said,
16:12all the way up to, you know, we have laser axes.
16:15Right.
16:15And so there's a whole bunch of, like, opportunities for inspiration there,
16:19you know, whether it's something that looks kind of,
16:22the word that gets tossed around the office a lot is kitbashed.
16:25So we have, like, that kitbashed Fortnite look to things
16:27where we're kind of, like, like an improvised weapon.
16:30Improvise and we put this together, yeah.
16:31But we also have this cool technology where it's, like,
16:34why is this, why is there a laser axe?
16:35Like, you know, it's awesome.
16:36There's a laser axe.
16:37So, like, here you have it.
16:38And so we have everything from all that range.
16:41So any kind of idea that we have can fit somewhere in that kind of schema.
16:46And then hopefully it's cool for the players,
16:48and then they get to kind of choose, you know,
16:50where they want to go with that.
16:51Right.
16:53I see that I'm Will Kinsler on the screen over there.
16:56You don't look a day over Will Kinsler.
16:58I do.
17:00Will Kinsler is still sitting here.
17:02I also want to, I think we should do hashtag run the gambit.
17:06Run the gambit?
17:07This is something we were talking about earlier.
17:11Hashtag run the gambit.
17:12Is it gambit or gamut?
17:13I think it's actually gamut, but I totally probably said gambit, didn't I?
17:16Yeah, you did.
17:16It's not an uncommon mistake, apparently.
17:19Gambit's an awesome, he's an awesome X-Man.
17:20He is.
17:21He is.
17:23X-Man.
17:24And as a designer, I'm familiar with the Prisoner's Dilemma,
17:26which could also be referred to as a gambit.
17:27That's true.
17:28There you go.
17:29There you go.
17:29The gambit of whether you should say that again.
17:33The gambit of whether I should say what again.
17:34Also, there's not enough monkeys.
17:36Can we bring some monkeys in, please?
17:38What monkeys?
17:39There we go.
17:40Thank you.
17:40They help us focus.
17:42What monkeys?
17:43Wait, hold on.
17:44Oh, he's so...
17:46Oh, outbreak.
17:50Hey, it's a movie reference I get.
17:53Mike, hold on.
17:54I'm not used to being in a boy band.
17:55So, what types of scenarios, you know, we talked about some of those weapons.
18:00What types of scenarios are better for melee versus range?
18:04I think it's kind of an obvious question, but, you know, was there some type of gameplay mechanics where we
18:10want to encourage playing maybe a melee versus a range?
18:14Well, obviously, certain classes are going to kind of make certain weapons a little bit better.
18:19Like, obviously, if you're a commando, your weapon of choice is an assault rifle.
18:22But if you're a ninja, you're probably better off using a sword.
18:25That's definitely going to be in there.
18:27But also, certain situations are going to lend themselves to kind of different kinds of weapons.
18:31Like, for example, if you've got a bunch of husks pounding on your door, maybe a nice big hammer swing
18:36could take care of those easier than trying to shoot them all with a pistol.
18:39Likewise, if there's a flinger all the way out in there, those guys are resistant to shooting.
18:43So, you want to go up there and kind of cut them up with a sword.
18:47The other side of this is if you've got, like, a blaster or, like, some other kinds of, like, a
18:51smasher in your base,
18:52maybe you don't want to be right up in that guy's face hitting him with a melee weapon unless you're
18:56a ninja.
18:56Maybe you want to stand behind your walls and shoot him with your guns.
18:59So, the different situations are going to provide different affordances for your tools and what you want to choose.
19:05Should we show some of these weapons that we're talking about?
19:07Yeah, yeah. We're going to get into the gameplay here in one second.
19:12We can actually probably switch over to the gameplay right now.
19:15Yeah, I mean, my face is nice and all, but I mean...
19:18There we go.
19:20So, just to give some backdrop, we have, we're in a dead build.
19:27And there's going to be things that we're going to spawn in here that aren't necessarily indicative of what you
19:31guys are going to play.
19:32So, I want to make that readily apparent.
19:34And this just is to show off, again, some of the weapons that we have and some of the traps
19:40that you can utilize.
19:41And we're going to see some different types of husks and monsters.
19:47So, right now, Wes has a, is that Rocket Sledge?
19:51It is a Rocket Sledge.
19:53Which is one of the melee weapons that you had talked about.
19:58Josh, can you spawn just some husks so we can see it in action?
20:03So, can you kind of explain, you know, I know it's a work in progress, Cameron, but the combo system
20:08that we kind of have per weapon?
20:10Sure. So, first off, the Rocket Sledge is not a weapon, I believe, that's hooked up to this.
20:14But just the, in general, we have combos on our hammers, our axes, and our swords.
20:20And essentially, the way they work is you can do a series of left-click attacks,
20:24which will then sort of build up to a right-click attack, which drains a little bit of your,
20:29okay, it looks like the Rocket Sledge is actually hooked up as a hammer.
20:32So, if Wes does two clicks and then a right-click, he's going to get a different attack than if
20:37he does four clicks and a right-click.
20:38So, each of these different attacks should be different.
20:42And every weapon also has, like, a default.
20:44Oh!
20:45Well, yeah, dying is definitely not part of the combo system.
20:48Well, you know what? We cheated everything except my health.
20:53You should have some health packs. I think we gave you some.
20:56Well, you know what? When you're in the heat of battle, when you're in the heat of the moment, if
21:00you will,
21:02then sometimes you just die and then you respawn because that's what we got.
21:05Your team was just kind of standing idly by watching you.
21:07That's true. Thanks for the help, y'all. Appreciate it. Teamwork.
21:11Hashtag.
21:12Hashtag teamwork.
21:14Hashtag bears are people.
21:16So, we have here, though, like, so essentially, like, if he does, like, two attacks and then a right-click,
21:21he's going to get, like, a big swing.
21:22But if he does four attacks and a right-click, he's going to get a big AoE.
21:26Go for husks. Go for husks. We'll do it live.
21:28We'll do it live.
21:29Where's the husks?
21:31There we go.
21:35I'm trying to – there we go.
21:36That's a three-hitter. That's a three-hit combo.
21:39One, two, three of those.
21:40And four. And then if you do four hits.
21:42All right, let's do it.
21:43One, two, three, four.
21:45Now, right-click and you get a big swing.
21:47He reset it. He reset it.
21:49Because I click too many times.
21:50Yeah.
21:52Dude, I'm a Diablo player, man.
21:54Yeah, you're a clicker.
21:54Like, don't hate.
21:56You're a clicker.
21:57Two, three, four.
22:00Right-click.
22:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:02So that kind of stuff.
22:03That's exactly how it works.
22:04So we have stuff like that for the hammers,
22:06the axes, and the swords.
22:07We're constantly working on improving that experience.
22:10Like, we have – I've seen some designs
22:11for ways we can improve, like, you know,
22:14communication of where you are in the combo
22:15so you don't get lost.
22:17Because, like, right now,
22:18we're really not communicating, like,
22:20that that system exists
22:20because it's more of a proof of concept
22:22just to get that kind of stuff in the game.
22:24So we're getting there.
22:25And hopefully that'll be better as it goes on.
22:30Now, there's two bars.
22:31One is health.
22:32The other one is energy.
22:34That's right.
22:34And when you execute some of these more, like,
22:38specials, the end of the combinations,
22:39it's going to use up energy.
22:41Yes.
22:41Was there a reason –
22:44I'm sure there's a very good explanation for this –
22:47but was it, like, a conscious decision
22:50to make people very conscious about energy
22:52when they use those?
22:53So there's a couple reasons for that.
22:54The first is that energy, as it exists in the game,
22:57is sort of a mobility limiter
22:58because, you know,
22:59you have the ability to move at speed
23:01and then you can sprint,
23:02which means you get to move faster.
23:04So the idea is that you have sort of a choice point here
23:06where it's like, okay,
23:07do I want to spend my energy moving around the map more?
23:09Do I want to spend my energy, you know,
23:12attacking monsters?
23:13Do I want to spend it on some of my abilities?
23:15So it's meant to be kind of like a way for players
23:17to kind of decide what's important to them.
23:20Speaking of monsters,
23:21how about we get some more monsters?
23:22so people watching the stream
23:24don't think that this game
23:25is just people running around doing nothing.
23:27Dance party?
23:28So the idea is that as you –
23:31Yeah, here we go with lights.
23:32As you are doing these combos
23:34and it's draining your energy,
23:36you're having fewer mobility options.
23:38Also, some classes and abilities
23:39might be able to, you know,
23:41have cheaper attacks and stuff like that.
23:44Right.
23:44Oh, no.
23:46We got smashed.
23:47So, Wes, can you switch weapons?
23:50We have a couple of different things.
23:51As soon as I resurrect.
23:53After my horrible performance.
23:55Here we go.
23:56Well, I have everything.
23:58Okay, so what do you want to see first?
23:59Do you want to see the grenade launcher?
24:00Yeah, sure.
24:01So we can start with the grenade launcher.
24:02I think the grenade launcher
24:03and the rocket launcher, for that matter,
24:05are really cool in that
24:07one of the elements that you guys
24:09have kind of put together,
24:10the teams put together,
24:11is the ability to use it in combat,
24:13but also as a way to collect resources.
24:17Yeah.
24:17Now, was there a conscious decision behind that?
24:21It's not so much a conscious decision.
24:22It's just that's kind of how Fortnite works.
24:24A lot of design decisions
24:25kind of come out of other decisions.
24:27It's not like somebody sat down and said,
24:29hey, should we make a gun that can collect trees?
24:32It was like we have this game
24:33where you do damage to things.
24:35When you do damage to things, they die.
24:36And when they die, you get the resources.
24:38So somebody made a gun
24:39and most of the guns don't damage walls
24:42because it would be kind of silly
24:44if you were just like,
24:45you know, if we have a building game
24:45and you're shooting things with a machine gun
24:47and the walls are just evaporating.
24:48That would be pretty unfun pretty fast.
24:50But then when you make an explosion,
24:52of course, you know, the conversation goes,
24:53well, hey, if I'm shooting a rocket
24:55or if I'm shooting a grenade,
24:56shouldn't that destroy buildings?
24:57Like that just seems to make sense.
24:58So then we put it in and it's like,
25:00oh, it does destroy buildings.
25:01It does do that.
25:02And so, you know,
25:04and I want to kind of take an opportunity
25:06to shout out some of the guys doing this work.
25:09We got, you know, guys like Matt Hansie,
25:11Tim Mellick, and James Kincaid
25:12kind of making decisions.
25:13A lot of times it'll start off as,
25:15hey, wouldn't it be cool
25:15if we had a grenade launcher?
25:17And then they make a grenade launcher.
25:18And then it's like,
25:19well, what should the grenade launcher do?
25:21And then it's, oh, it should explode things.
25:23And then it's like,
25:23when it explodes things,
25:24it collects resources.
25:25And then we say, okay, well, is this fun?
25:27Should we keep this in the game?
25:28And the answer is yes,
25:29we want to keep this in the game.
25:30But then, you know,
25:30you run into other challenges like,
25:32well, you can't just have a grenade launcher
25:34that you can just make ammo for forever
25:36and just keep destroying walls
25:38because then again,
25:38we're back to the original problem
25:39of people could just shoot your walls down
25:41and the building becomes trivialized.
25:43So then we said, okay,
25:44what other kind of ways
25:44do we have of doing this?
25:46So like, that's where you have stuff like,
25:47okay, it's sort of like
25:49a limited use rare thing
25:50where like you get to make it a little bit
25:51and then it goes away.
25:52Let's be very clear.
25:53These weapons that we're showing you today
25:54are like high-end weapons
25:57that you're not going to have access to
25:59early in the game necessarily.
26:01Absolutely.
26:01And not only that,
26:02but like these particular types of weapons,
26:04it's probably impossible
26:05for you guys to see here,
26:07but like some of the weapons,
26:09they don't have ammo.
26:10They have sort of durability.
26:12So whenever you shoot them,
26:13your durability will go down a little bit.
26:15So there's a limited number of shots
26:16and you have to make a whole new gun
26:18in order to get more shots.
26:19So they're a little bit harder to come by
26:20because we really,
26:22you know,
26:22Fortnite is above all
26:23an action building game.
26:24We want to emphasize
26:24the building aspects of it.
26:26Build some floors.
26:27Yeah.
26:28A little F2 action.
26:29I know,
26:29but I'm trying to help him out though.
26:32And then,
26:32well,
26:32I was going to,
26:33for a minute,
26:33I was going to troll him.
26:34I was going to trap him down there,
26:35but that wouldn't have been very nice.
26:37I did.
26:37Okay,
26:37great.
26:38Oh,
26:39that,
26:39see,
26:39that was a horrible,
26:40Now you're trapping him again.
26:41Oh yeah.
26:42Good luck getting out of there,
26:43bud.
26:44All right.
26:46Some floors need to be,
26:48or you can try.
26:49All right,
26:49fine.
26:49The people demand us too.
26:50Back off me.
26:53I am,
26:53I am the architect.
26:56I will spout mumbo jumbo to you.
26:58Um,
26:58architecture.
26:59We need to kill more things.
27:00So yeah,
27:01can we spawn in some more enemies to see,
27:03uh,
27:03see how to lay waste to them?
27:05Yeah,
27:05with a grenade launcher.
27:07Ridiculous.
27:08Or rocket launcher.
27:09Yeah,
27:09I don't want people to get the idea that it's going to be this easy to kill stuff.
27:12These,
27:12these guns are like crazy overpowered right now.
27:14So just give us so many that we all die.
27:17All right.
27:17Lots of enemies.
27:19That we all die.
27:20Oh wow.
27:21I mean,
27:21let's try not to.
27:22Overwhelming force is what you're saying.
27:24Well,
27:24we don't want them to break this,
27:25this house of traps that we've constructed.
27:28That's true.
27:28That's true.
27:30Don't want that to happen.
27:31Don't.
27:33But yeah,
27:34he's spawning a bunch of enemies.
27:36And do a little grenade action.
27:38Katana action over here.
27:40Yeah.
27:40See how it just drops enemies.
27:42So,
27:42so by contrast,
27:43if I use the,
27:44like,
27:45this is like the harvesting tool.
27:46All right.
27:47That's good.
27:47forever.
27:48Oh,
27:48this is awesome.
27:49That's good.
27:49Use the grenade,
27:50our little cluster bomb grenade.
27:53Yep.
27:53I feel like a samurai right now.
27:56All right.
27:56Mission accomplished.
27:58All right.
27:59Awesome.
28:00Then we got a John Woo ninja over there.
28:02Shooting some smoothies.
28:03All right.
28:04So there are a couple of really special and unique weapons that we also included in today's stream.
28:11There is the dragon pistol.
28:14Yes.
28:14Do you have an image of the dragon pistol?
28:16I did not provide an image of the dragon pistol.
28:19You can kind of see it.
28:20I'm trying to like.
28:20But there is one,
28:22I believe,
28:22on the website right now.
28:23Okay.
28:24I'm actually using a laser blade.
28:26Wait,
28:26let me see the laser blade.
28:27It's pretty sweet.
28:28It's got some technology happening.
28:31Let's see.
28:31Make lasers.
28:32I mean,
28:32I don't think.
28:34Yeah,
28:34I don't know if any lasers shoot out of it,
28:36but it definitely cuts through people like a laser.
28:40How does,
28:40how does the laser cut through people?
28:42I don't know.
28:43All right.
28:43Here we go.
28:44All right.
28:44So the dragon gun,
28:46let's get some enemies,
28:47drop some,
28:49drop some fools.
28:51So with each of these designs,
28:53they have very different,
28:54you know,
28:55feels to them.
28:56And some of the more futuristic weapons definitely look really cool.
29:01You know,
29:02we talked about some of the inspirations for those.
29:06When you get to really unique weapons like this,
29:08is there like a moment where the team is just like,
29:11oh yeah,
29:11that's it.
29:13That's Fortnite right there.
29:14Well,
29:14I mean,
29:15certainly that's going to be more on the art side.
29:17Art side.
29:17I mean,
29:17you know,
29:18when they come up with ideas,
29:19like a lot of times,
29:19like,
29:20you know,
29:20because designers are kind of boring people.
29:23We say things like,
29:23there needs to be a weapon that follows a certain type of pattern.
29:26Like we need a mid range weapon of medium ammo consumption that can deal amount of damage.
29:30And then like an artist would be like,
29:31dude,
29:32what if it was a dragon pistol?
29:33And then it's like,
29:33oh,
29:34okay,
29:35like that's super cool.
29:36Or we'll make a request like,
29:37hey,
29:37we need something super awesome.
29:39Like to,
29:40you know,
29:41just to give you an example,
29:42like that,
29:42that plasma pulse that the constructor just dropped there.
29:45That was essentially my request was like,
29:47I need a thing that,
29:48that,
29:48that,
29:49the constructor can drop that gives area denial damage abilities.
29:52Smashers.
29:53And then Tim was like,
29:54what if it looked like this?
29:55You know,
29:55so a lot of times like art will come up with these inspirations for like specifically,
29:58like,
29:59what these look like or interpreting kind of design requests in that space.
30:02Okay.
30:02And sometimes the designers just like specifically,
30:04no,
30:04man,
30:04I need a dragon pistol and I want to look like a dragon.
30:06But,
30:07you know,
30:07it,
30:07it's kind of,
30:08it's a give and take.
30:09Can we get some smashers in here?
30:14That grenade launcher.
30:17got to run.
30:17Got to go.
30:18Got to go.
30:18Use two.
30:19No,
30:19you don't have any.
30:20Oh,
30:20I don't because I'm all weapons all the time.
30:23You got to,
30:23you got to,
30:24look at how powerful that dragon gun is.
30:25Oh,
30:26dropped.
30:29Dropped.
30:29So normally it's not that easy to kill enemies.
30:32No,
30:32especially not the smashers.
30:33One of the other things I want to mention,
30:34he's talking about the power of it is there was a system of,
30:38of upgrading weapons and having weapon progression.
30:42Can you kind of speak to how that came to be and why that?
30:45So,
30:46yeah,
30:46a little bit of it.
30:47Now I'm not going to go into details because a lot of this is still,
30:50you know,
30:50work,
30:50it works in progress and we're still talking about this,
30:52but essentially there is a progression of weapons.
30:54So like,
30:55you know,
30:55when you start off,
30:56you've got a lot of,
30:57you know,
30:57like the,
30:57we call it like the handmade stuff,
30:59like the handmade katana,
31:00your handmade pickaxe,
31:01you know,
31:01this represents like,
31:02Hey,
31:02you know,
31:02you just woke up,
31:03you went into your bathroom and you're like,
31:04what can I use in here and turn into a weapon kind of stuff.
31:07But then eventually as you become,
31:09you know,
31:09more badass and more cool and you get more stuff,
31:11you start to be able to build some of these cooler,
31:13techier pieces.
31:14And that's kind of like,
31:15you know,
31:15from a,
31:15from a purely high level standpoint,
31:17that is progression,
31:18right?
31:18You're going from your,
31:19your broom with,
31:20with a knife on it,
31:21a board with a nail in it,
31:22to your laser guns,
31:23to your dragon guns,
31:25to your grenade launchers.
31:26And so as players progress and unlock power in the game,
31:29they become more,
31:30more powerful.
31:31And these weapons sort of progress through that as they go through the,
31:34the traditional rarities.
31:35Like you got your green weapon,
31:36your purple weapon,
31:36your,
31:37your orange weapon.
31:38Okay.
31:39Um,
31:39I died.
31:40I'm sorry.
31:41So one other weapon that we want to show off is the zapatron.
31:45I don't know of anyone that is,
31:46I,
31:46I think there was some talk,
31:49there was some talk,
31:51uh,
31:51other forums,
31:52but you know,
31:52once we showed off the dragon pistol,
31:54I believe we showed,
31:55we showed it off,
31:56uh,
31:57in a post.
31:57Help me get my backpack.
31:58But,
31:58uh,
31:58the zapatron is another one of those weapons where it's really,
32:03really cool to look at,
32:05uh,
32:05visuals on it.
32:06Um,
32:08has,
32:08uh,
32:08a bit of an AOE on it.
32:10I,
32:10I also believe so.
32:11If you shoot at,
32:12uh,
32:13a wall,
32:13for example,
32:14this weapon will take down a wall.
32:16And this is just another one of the cool things I want to show Wes having,
32:21having trouble,
32:22uh,
32:22hitting the husk.
32:23Nah,
32:23I was hitting headshots all day,
32:25every day.
32:26What's you're talking about?
32:27I was missing on purpose.
32:29Right.
32:29Yeah,
32:29I just want to,
32:30I want to show the common man,
32:31you know,
32:31like their experience.
32:34Wow.
32:36Is that what the rest of us are to you?
32:39You know,
32:40wait,
32:40oh,
32:41that's right.
32:44Dude,
32:45you just totally wrecked the ground there.
32:47I did.
32:47The ground is done.
32:49Mother,
32:49mother nature.
32:52Where's monkeys?
32:53Come on.
32:54We can eat monkeys.
32:55Uh,
32:56there's not enough monkeys.
32:57So let's,
32:57let's,
32:58let's start showing off some of the traps here.
33:00So let's,
33:00let's get,
33:01let's get the wall of traps.
33:04Oh,
33:04well,
33:04there's a couple of different traps that we've set up a little bit,
33:07um,
33:09uh,
33:09for,
33:10for this,
33:10uh,
33:11stream today.
33:12We have,
33:13uh,
33:13kind of showcasing,
33:14uh,
33:16cooties design.
33:17Uh,
33:18so what he's done is basically chained together building,
33:21uh,
33:22with some of the end,
33:24uh,
33:24the end level,
33:25uh,
33:27surfaces and,
33:28and,
33:28and,
33:29and pits and things of that nature to,
33:31um,
33:32just add one big trap to his fort.
33:34As we showed earlier,
33:35uh,
33:36we kind of made a,
33:37we found a house that had a basement.
33:39So we made a pit with the basement and then we built a structure around that basically,
33:45um,
33:45as husks come in,
33:46these are all jump pads that are around the flooring.
33:49You will,
33:50they will jettison and hit the roof because there's slanted roofs that will actually fall
33:53into the pit.
33:54So this is some of the emergent gameplay,
33:57uh,
33:57that players are coming up with in OT2 that when we see it,
34:00we're like,
34:00oh man,
34:01that's,
34:01that's really cool.
34:02One of the big questions I have for you,
34:04Cameron is where some of these weapon designs and traps and stuff,
34:09was it,
34:10was you guys making,
34:10making a conscious decision to be like,
34:12it would be cool if we chained together this and this.
34:15So it's not so much that like,
34:17you know,
34:17people didn't go around and go,
34:18oh,
34:18Hey,
34:18would it be cool if we have like a spike trap and a jump trap and we put those
34:22together,
34:22but the,
34:23the like sort of like,
34:25um,
34:26high level mission statement is all right.
34:27It's fortnight is a,
34:28is a toolkit.
34:29So like the idea is that we provide things like we,
34:32we always intended them to be used together.
34:34Like we don't,
34:35we don't just say specifically,
34:36you're going to make a jump pad for this.
34:38You're going to make a spike trap for this.
34:40We're just going to make,
34:41we're going to make jump pads.
34:42We're going to make spike traps and we're going to make all these things.
34:44And then we expect players to kind of come up with how they use them and leverage them
34:48together to make stuff like this,
34:50because that's kind of what fortnight's all about.
34:52So,
34:53um,
34:53while we didn't particularly,
34:55we know it was thinking,
34:56Hey,
34:56would it be cool if we had a slanty roof building with jump traps that knock people into
34:59a pit?
35:00That's certainly not something that,
35:01that was,
35:02was thought the idea that players would come up with stuff like this was absolutely
35:07always core to the design.
35:08Okay.
35:09So you guys can see what's kind of happening here as they get thrown in.
35:14Where's our,
35:15where's our smashers at?
35:17Oh man,
35:17I'm out of,
35:18I'm out of,
35:18how many are down there now?
35:19Ooh,
35:20well,
35:20I've been,
35:20Oh no,
35:21I fell in the pit.
35:22No,
35:23how that's the only thing you weren't supposed to do.
35:26You don't fall into the pit where they're in the stairs.
35:31Build the stairs.
35:32No,
35:32no,
35:33they're going to come back up.
35:34They're going to come back up.
35:35You weren't supposed to run under there.
35:37No,
35:38that defeated the purpose.
35:40If you build the stairs,
35:41can't they get out?
35:41They can get out.
35:43They can.
35:43Ah,
35:44yeah.
35:44Oh crap.
35:46Our AI is too smart.
35:47They know how to use stairs.
35:48I was stuck in the stairs and now I'm going to die.
35:50This is,
35:51this is horrible television.
35:53I mean,
35:53die on television.
35:54It's true.
35:55You can't do that on television.
35:56Oh,
35:57all right,
35:57all right,
35:57all right.
35:58here we go.
35:59I'm out.
35:59I guess you can come back.
36:02Totally tried to trap Wes down there.
36:04We got a zap trounced up.
36:06Oh wow.
36:06There's still more down there.
36:07Here they go.
36:08Woo.
36:11Oh yeah,
36:12this is like,
36:13we're shooting fish in a barrel.
36:15Yeah.
36:19Thanks for doing that Cameron.
36:21No problem.
36:22I'm here for you.
36:22Now there's the smasher.
36:23Now the smasher has some very unique properties as a,
36:28monster.
36:29It basically runs through your base and destroys things.
36:34So setting it up can obviously be a little bit more difficult for some of
36:37these tracks.
36:38Right now,
36:38right there.
36:39Boom.
36:40It can currently happen.
36:42Smasher in a barrel.
36:43What?
36:44Sorry.
36:45It's not really a barrel,
36:47but sure.
36:48It is now.
36:49Oh,
36:49there's two of them in there.
36:50It's the new thing.
36:52So obviously every scenario is not going to be,
36:54you're not going to be able to do this in every scenario.
36:56Right.
36:58and the other traps that we have set up right now.
37:01If you walk outside,
37:03we have some traps out in front.
37:06These are just to show off some of the wall traps.
37:08There's also some floor traps,
37:09ceiling.
37:10Wait,
37:10they're not up front.
37:12They're way up front.
37:13So you got to follow me other side,
37:14right in front of that wall.
37:15Oh,
37:16okay.
37:16So,
37:17Will is going to kind of bait some of these folks in here and we just,
37:22you can shoot at some of them West,
37:24but we just kind of want to show off.
37:25Oh,
37:25you want me to shoot at,
37:26oh,
37:26husks or?
37:27No,
37:27Will is going to be our bait.
37:29All right,
37:30do it.
37:30He's going to be the husk bait.
37:32They're going to spawn out by you.
37:33So you're also going to be,
37:35so he's going to just jump in front of the walls.
37:38And some of these,
37:40you know,
37:40Cameron,
37:41we talked last week with James when he was on,
37:44he kind of was,
37:44he set up a wall trap that actually,
37:47if you remember,
37:47knocked down the husks into another trap,
37:50which was a four trap.
37:51There are a lot of husks.
37:51And then he kind of comboed those two together so that,
37:55you know,
37:55he could do that.
37:55So that's some of the kind of emerging gameplay that you guys have seen.
37:59It's like on the stream yesterday,
38:01again,
38:02James setting up a wall trap to knock down the husks because they are attacking the,
38:06the Atlas.
38:07and then once they hit the,
38:08the flooring,
38:09then hit another trap to,
38:11to kind of,
38:12you know,
38:12deal damage.
38:13So,
38:13yeah,
38:15we built this one up Wes.
38:18I would like you to,
38:21to run us through what you would,
38:23what you would build.
38:24And then we'll,
38:24we'll bait,
38:25we'll bait a house.
38:26What I would build for this for your own traps.
38:28What would you,
38:29if you had to build your own house of traps?
38:31So generally,
38:33I'm going to put another trap up here.
38:33Here it goes.
38:34We have,
38:34we have all sorts of things that aren't necessarily even traps.
38:37but a lot of times what we'll do is we'll build,
38:39you know,
38:40I'll build like a,
38:41I got to press the F button,
38:43but I'll go and I'll like build like,
38:46I don't know,
38:46maybe like half walls.
38:48and then I will put those in a,
38:51I'll kind of like lead them into it.
38:54So maybe,
38:55you know,
38:55like,
38:55so we'll have an open area that they can be hit by trap.
38:58Well,
38:58the traps are gone now.
38:59Damn it.
39:02Well,
39:02you can play.
39:03So you can do a lot of stuff where,
39:04where you,
39:04where you,
39:05you create structures that sort of feed people into,
39:09you know,
39:09feed enemies into the,
39:12although I think in the new build,
39:13can't they jump over half high walls?
39:15I don't know if they can jump over the half high walls,
39:17but I do know that smashers just destroy them instantly when they walk into them.
39:21Oh,
39:21wow.
39:22That's like,
39:23is that a new thing?
39:24No,
39:25that was from OT1.
39:26It's just,
39:26a lot of people don't notice it.
39:28down.
39:28So really like,
39:30if you go and shout out to,
39:32I don't know if you guys know the,
39:33the Pitchford family,
39:35you know,
39:35the guys work,
39:37Randy and his son who worked over,
39:38who played this game before,
39:39they took a whole tile of this game and they,
39:42they,
39:43they cleared out the whole tile and did traps in almost every part of the map.
39:47So like,
39:48basically they spent so much time doing that,
39:51that the whole map was just filled with this type of stuff where the enemies could like do nothing.
39:55Obviously it would take a really long time to do that.
39:57and I don't even know if you could,
39:58you could gather enough resources because I think we cheated them,
40:01but like people have all sorts of crazy ways that they're doing that.
40:04I've seen like whole communities of traps built up and things like that.
40:08But yeah,
40:09it's like,
40:09it's like,
40:09it's like a Rube Goldberg machine,
40:11right?
40:11Like you can come up with all sorts of ways.
40:12It's like,
40:13Oh,
40:13I'm going to launch this guy up here.
40:14And then this is a good one too.
40:16It's like,
40:16here's a launcher.
40:17And then there's like shock traps up here.
40:19So they immediately come in here and they get shocked.
40:21They get launched up and shocked and die.
40:23You can see them come through here,
40:24which I,
40:25this is one of my favorites actually.
40:27but sometimes this stuff,
40:29you can see them,
40:29they're just launching,
40:30they're just launching over this.
40:32I mean that,
40:32you know,
40:32sometimes it has unintended consequences.
40:34So like you could set a trap and it will launch them and then we'll just launch them on top
40:38of your base where they have easier access to your gate or whatever.
40:41So you definitely have to be careful of that.
40:43Cause you'll see some of these guys will actually,
40:45although I think the hit points are low.
40:46Some of these guys will,
40:47Oh man,
40:47I'm going to get out of here.
40:51Some of these guys will,
40:53um,
40:53here's my harvesting tool.
40:54Let's see.
40:55There we go.
40:56Um,
40:56they will launch over top of this and miss it altogether,
40:59but you can just continue and like build,
41:02um,
41:03build some more roots here.
41:05That will prevent that.
41:06It would carouse them some more.
41:08I think that's the only trap.
41:11So now some of our,
41:14uh,
41:15uh,
41:15the will,
41:16Josh,
41:17Natalie,
41:17they're kind of up on the roofs and,
41:19uh,
41:20Cameron,
41:21there are also,
41:22we saw one over on,
41:23um,
41:24the,
41:24the,
41:24the house of traps that we've made the floor traps where it's a player jump pad.
41:29Um,
41:31what,
41:32what type of decision making did you guys have about players using,
41:37uh,
41:38specific traps for their own benefit?
41:41Going back to like,
41:42one of the names I mentioned earlier,
41:43Matt Hansie is kind of like,
41:45um,
41:45the trap wizard and he just sort of like was making stuff that he thought was cool.
41:50Cool.
41:50And like a lot of,
41:51a lot of times,
41:51you know,
41:52I guess,
41:52um,
41:53games,
41:53uh,
41:54start out with sort of like general ideas of what we,
41:57we know we want to have traps,
41:59but we don't really know what they are.
42:01And it takes a guy like Matt going in there and just being like,
42:04let me see what we can do with the tools we have.
42:06And look,
42:06I made,
42:06I made a spike trap.
42:08Look,
42:08I made,
42:08I made a,
42:09a jump jump pad trap.
42:11Do we want this?
42:11I don't know.
42:12And then we put it in the game and then some people were like,
42:14Oh man,
42:15I really like this.
42:15This is fun because I can use this to go from,
42:17from base to base,
42:18especially in those multi gate captures.
42:20A lot of people are really ingenious with their,
42:22like,
42:22they can make like jump trads that let them go from gate one to gate two or
42:26another stuff like that.
42:27So there's a lot of different ways to express your creativity with
42:30those,
42:30with those traps.
42:31Certainly.
42:32And like I said,
42:34the metaphor is fortnight is a toolkit.
42:36So anything that is a tool that players could use to achieve their goals,
42:40we're all for adding those kinds of things.
42:42And sometimes we're not even sure why we're adding something.
42:44We just know it would be really cool to have this in the game because like,
42:48we know that there's a need for this and it's not so much specifically like,
42:51we're going to add this particular thing because of this scenario.
42:54Like I said before,
42:55it's like we're going to add this thing because this thing by itself is cool.
42:58And we think players can use this thing to achieve their goals.
43:01Have you seen any,
43:03uh,
43:03emerging gameplay like the,
43:05uh,
43:07the floor traps.
43:08And this is just a kind of a broad,
43:09um,
43:10question like the floor traps that,
43:12that fall into the pit where that then goes,
43:14oh,
43:15okay,
43:15that would be cool to make or design around another type of trap or weapon.
43:21Um,
43:21it's usually like,
43:23so like again,
43:24when we're,
43:24we're approaching these kinds of design questions,
43:26a lot of times we're not specifically designing for like,
43:28it's not like you're going to see like,
43:30okay,
43:30monsters got launched into the pit.
43:31Wasn't that cool.
43:32Let's do that.
43:33It was more like we have to be,
43:34be able to,
43:35because not every player is going to get super excited about launching monsters into a pit.
43:39Right.
43:39There's a certain type of player out there.
43:40It's going to be like,
43:41oh my God,
43:41I want to do that.
43:43That's exciting.
43:43Another type of player is going to go,
43:44that seems boring.
43:45I'd rather just kill them all.
43:47Or another player might say,
43:48hey,
43:49but my whole expression,
43:50and this is like,
43:51you know,
43:51if you get into like game theory,
43:52the expression of self mastery,
43:53right?
43:54Like my,
43:55my expression of mastery is I want to make a fort that's so impenetrable.
43:58that I don't even have to do anything.
44:00I'm just going to sit here and watch them helplessly flail against my ironclad walls.
44:04And that's exciting for them.
44:05So you want to make sure that your gameplay can kind of support all these things.
44:09So we're always,
44:10we're looking at design challenges.
44:11We're always talking about,
44:12okay,
44:12what is the,
44:12the mode we're making?
44:13Like right now,
44:14we have gate capture.
44:14Right.
44:15What is the goal of gate capture?
44:16It's like,
44:16well,
44:16guys come to attack a thing and we have to protect the thing.
44:20How do you protect the thing?
44:21Well,
44:21there's lots of different ways players can protect the thing.
44:23Do we offer them enough choices to protect the thing?
44:26Can they protect the thing in a way that's fun for them?
44:28Do they have agency and mastery in that?
44:29Is there a way for players to protect the thing in ways which are meaningful to them?
44:33Are we,
44:34or are we forcing players into know this is the only way you can protect the thing?
44:37And that's really the only thing we're trying to avoid.
44:39Okay.
44:39Okay.
44:40Oh,
44:41so we got a complex series of traps.
44:44Yeah,
44:45like this too,
44:45where it's just like you build a little walls,
44:48half height walls and you angle them in different ways.
44:51And again,
44:52they,
44:52they come through the funnel,
44:53like it's some sort of group Goldberg machine.
44:55And you can,
44:56you know,
44:57you know,
44:57put a jump pad here and then they,
44:59they land on this thing and then it's a spike trap.
45:01And,
45:01you know,
45:02and,
45:02but obviously the end goal,
45:03at least for right now,
45:04one of our objectives is the gate capture.
45:06So you're,
45:06you're constantly playing keep away.
45:08Right.
45:10Let's see.
45:11Yeah.
45:11Has there been anything that we have not,
45:14I think we could throw any more enemies at some stuff.
45:19We haven't different types of,
45:20I know that the electric husk or the electric,
45:23uh,
45:23smasher is,
45:24let's throw all sorts of stuff in there.
45:25Let's throw,
45:26let's throw,
45:27I mean,
45:27I think there's a couple we're not showing,
45:28but there we can,
45:29if you put a smasher on one end of those,
45:30uh,
45:31single walls,
45:31he should charge through those.
45:33Oh,
45:33there's,
45:33there's one.
45:34So he's kind of,
45:34oh,
45:35yeah,
45:35he's already bashing through them.
45:36Oh,
45:36see,
45:37he just,
45:37he just decides that.
45:38Oh no,
45:38you have a,
45:39uh,
45:39your stick.
45:40Yeah,
45:40I know.
45:42Thanks.
45:45Oh,
45:45try,
45:46try,
45:47try.
45:47I'm going to make you a health pack.
45:50Oh,
45:52geez.
45:52Oh,
45:52you died.
45:53It's electric.
45:55We got that for you.
45:56It's electric.
45:57Yeah.
45:57He sent your body sliding.
45:59No,
45:59no.
46:01I'm making all these really relevant references.
46:03Yeah.
46:04like the electric slide,
46:06but I got it.
46:08Did you get the,
46:09uh,
46:09I can make like an electric boogaloo,
46:11um,
46:12no,
46:12would you get that?
46:13that wouldn't.
46:14Damn it.
46:16Breaking two,
46:17you should look it up.
46:18IMDB.com.
46:20So the,
46:21uh,
46:21electric,
46:22uh,
46:22smasher is,
46:23is,
46:24uh,
46:24one of the,
46:24uh,
46:25special monsters.
46:26Uh,
46:26I think we're going to show off a couple of different ones.
46:28Josh,
46:28if you could spawn perhaps a propane or a blaster.
46:31I'll stay away.
46:32I'll stay a little bit farther back because I have,
46:34apparently I'm horrible at this game.
46:36I mean,
46:37I'm not really horrible,
46:38but you just can't take one on one.
46:40I'm not a KL.
46:41I mean,
46:41you can't take one on one though.
46:43Oh yeah.
46:43So let's talk about the enemy.
46:44So what was that one that just spawned?
46:46That's my backpack.
46:48The husky husk.
46:50Yeah.
46:52So those clouds are like basically where he's poisonous.
46:56Yeah.
46:57His barf gas.
46:58I don't,
46:58is that the technical term?
47:00I don't,
47:01uh,
47:02the technical term is the,
47:03I think it's called like a enemy collision volume or something like that.
47:06Yeah.
47:06Let's not say that.
47:07Yeah.
47:07We don't,
47:08I don't think we want the technical term.
47:09No.
47:10So boring.
47:12Hey kids.
47:12I think we all just fell asleep.
47:13Check out our enemy collision volume.
47:15Hey,
47:16listen,
47:16you asked for the technical term.
47:18So one of the things that,
47:20uh,
47:21you know,
47:21kind of adds to the weapons you use and the traps you build is a different,
47:25uh,
47:26the different enemies that are in the game.
47:28you know,
47:29a lot of,
47:30uh,
47:30of decision-making graphics on level four,
47:32uh,
47:33for the,
47:33for example,
47:34for the propane husks are that they will blow up your base.
47:40If you let them,
47:40they'll throw down the propane and blow things up.
47:42So it kind of makes like,
47:44you know,
47:44using a weapon that's longer range or attacking them before they even get to your base a lot more,
47:49um,
47:51you know,
47:51readily apparent once you see them in action.
47:53Yes.
47:53Well,
47:54I mean,
47:54obviously like if you're going up against a lot of smashers and you make a bunch of level one walls,
47:59you're going to have a bad time.
48:00If you go up against a lot of B guys and you're using a bunch of melee,
48:05you're going to have a bad time.
48:06So like being able to adjust your strategy to what you're fighting is certainly important.
48:11and like,
48:11you know,
48:11showing that elemental guy earlier,
48:13like some of the elemental themed creatures deal more damage to certain kinds of structures.
48:18Like the fire guys do more damage to wood structures and the lightning guys do more damage to metal structures.
48:22So if you build this all one thing and you're fighting and those are like late game kind of concepts,
48:28but like as you get into those kinds of things,
48:30like we're hoping that players will be able to alter their building,
48:33alter their play style to kind of adapt to different challenges.
48:35And again,
48:36going back to that fortnight is a toolkit metaphor.
48:38This is the pitcher husk.
48:39Yeah.
48:41They throw instead of baseballs,
48:43they throw bones.
48:45I think you're about to die.
48:47There's another husky husk.
48:49I am about to die as I'm running with his away.
48:52I'm going to run,
48:52I'm going to do some collision volume or something up here on the roof.
48:57Let's see.
48:58Oh,
48:58see,
48:58not too bad.
48:59Not too bad.
49:02That was bad.
49:04So with the husky husk and the,
49:07what was it?
49:07The bee husk?
49:08That one,
49:08I don't actually know the technical name of either.
49:11I don't want to,
49:12I don't want to actually say any of those names because I don't know any of them either.
49:15That's the name.
49:15Beehive husk.
49:16Okay.
49:16I believe you.
49:17It is.
49:17Because I was in a meeting one time and we were like,
49:19what we should call it?
49:20A beehive husk.
49:21Okay,
49:21cool.
49:21Done.
49:22So obviously like,
49:23like a very common game ism.
49:25They've got a cloud of stuff.
49:26You should not walk in.
49:28Yep.
49:28Or you die very fast.
49:29It's like an area of effect.
49:30So how quickly will the area of effect kill you?
49:33Very.
49:33Very fast.
49:34I tested it and I've died many times.
49:36Oh,
49:36wow.
49:37Okay.
49:37The electric husks.
49:38I can run into this little herd of electric husk raptor type things here.
49:43Mini husk?
49:44Mini husk.
49:46Those are some,
49:47some incredible effects.
49:49So I can,
49:50I can try to escape in this little make them.
49:52Yeah,
49:52that's right.
49:53Hold them up.
49:54See that slowing enemies up is just as good sometimes as trap.
49:59She gives you a chance to get away.
50:02So with that,
50:04we've seen a couple of different weapons.
50:05Oh,
50:06fire.
50:06A couple of different types of traps.
50:08I've got some concepts.
50:09We showed off Cooties design.
