01:25It's really interesting how you were describing the area of effect attacks that the Kraken has
01:30and how you've got to make sure you're spaced out when you're facing the Kraken
01:32and then with other monsters like Goliath, maybe sticking together is more of an option
01:36so I guess what, are you trying to go for a thing where you have to constantly be adapting your
01:41strategy
01:41based on what monster you're fighting
01:42and when you're the monster, you too have to be adapting your strategy
01:45based on the strengths and weaknesses of your monster
01:47Yeah, absolutely, absolutely
01:49and we've announced the Goliath now and the Kraken
01:51there's still a third monster to announce before launch
01:54we're all vastly different
01:55and I think one of the big attractions of Evolve is every character in the game
01:59the monster or hunter, there's something for everyone
02:01and they all play, the monsters especially, they all play vastly different
02:05the roles, the hunter characters, their roles
02:10if you're an assault, you're the damage dealer
02:12if you're the support, you're obviously there to support the team
02:15medics healing the team and then the trapper's there to trap
02:17but each character plays that role differently
02:20you know, one of the things as well that we have at E3 is our new four hunters that we've
02:25unveiled
02:26and they play pretty differently to the last four
02:29you know, our medic is very different
02:31our medic before has an active healing ability
02:33she actually uses this heal beam on people to heal them during the game
02:38Lazarus doesn't actually have any active healing ability
02:41he comes into play once your character's dead
02:45and he comes into the battlefield and actually resurrects you
02:48so it's a very different sort of strategic
02:50where you've got to think about that
02:52you know, as a team you're going to die a lot more
02:54but you've got to rely on the fact that Lazarus is
02:56when you're dead, he's very, very effective
02:59and a monster has to strategically think about that
03:01he's like, Lazarus becomes the most important player on the battlefield at that point
03:05and you're going to want to target him
03:06he also has a cloak, so you're not going to see him a lot
03:08so a really good Lazarus player can really turn the tide
03:11but then a really effective monster player knows this
03:13and then the whole sort of kicker on top it is
03:17everyone's human
03:18so there's no AI there
03:20there's no like, like when you're a classic boss fight in a game
03:23you're like, you learn the cycles of the abilities
03:25and then learn when it's your turn to attack
03:26there's none of that here, right?
03:29the most unpredictable thing is the human opponent that you're playing against
03:32and that's a really cool thing about Evolve
03:34and for some of the guys who've maybe not seen too much of Evolve yet
03:37can you talk us through the Evolve mechanic?
03:40because I remember when I first played the game
03:41and I was the monster, I was like, I'm just going to kick everyone's ass
03:43ran straight in there, hadn't eaten anything
03:45hadn't Evolve, I got absolutely annihilated straight away
03:48so when you're playing as the monster
03:49it's not just a case of being awesomely powerful straight away
03:53can you just talk us through what that process is like?
03:55so we've actually changed things a little bit since you played
03:58so you do actually have the opportunity to be awesomely powerful straight from the off
04:02because it's something we felt we missed a little bit
04:04our really good players can still win at stage 1
04:07so we changed the way the ability system works for the monster
04:10now you have, much like a MOBA, you have 3 skill points to choose from
04:13so you have 4 abilities to sort of invest that in
04:19and you can choose to invest all your skill abilities in just 1 ability
04:22and actually get a stage 3 ability at that stage
04:26so you can have 1 ability that's really really powerful
04:29right from the off, it has a long cooldown
04:32which leaves you vulnerable, well, it leaves you unable to use anything but your melee attack during that cooldown
04:36or you can choose to go a bit more even spread
04:39and actually invest, say, 1 skill point in each of 3 different abilities
04:47again, it allows you to chain abilities together more quickly
04:49but they're much, much weaker, but you're not dealing with that cooldown
04:51so you can keep the hunters under that foot
04:54so that's the first thing to say, you have the opportunity to be a powerful monster
04:59now, how you evolve in the game is actually you feed on the wildlife
05:03you get in the world
05:04and then you're looking for wildlife to feed on
05:06early on you're looking for smaller stuff
05:08because you're not so big
05:09and the wildlife itself is pretty dangerous
05:12so you're feeding on the wildlife
05:13and you're filling up your evolve meter
05:15when your meter's full, then you choose to evolve
05:17and we give you 3 more skill points to spend
05:19so then you invest those skill points
05:21by the time you hit stage 3
05:23at that point you've had 9 skill points
05:25you're 30 foot tall
05:27you are clearly no longer the hunted
05:30you are the hunter
05:31and the ebb and flow
05:33and the dynamic of the game just sort of shifts
05:36but that's not to say
05:37we have guys who are very effective at winning this at stage 1
05:40and again, the hunters
05:41they kind of get complacent
05:43they go, ah, let's go and find him
05:44and he's like sat there at the start going
05:46hello fellas
05:47literally stand there
05:48and it's a good strategy as well
05:50he's take down two of them right at the start
05:51puts them so on the back foot
05:52buys you so much time to go off and do your thing
05:55so there's different, there's again
05:57massively different strategies that we see
05:59even in our group of 10 players that we have
06:02at our office at 2k
06:03we see loads of stuff like that
06:05let's flip that around then
06:06so you're the monster
06:08you've managed to evolve to stage 3
06:10you're pretty badass by that stage
06:12what can the hunters do
06:14against a stage 3 monster?
06:15I guess you've got the
06:16you can win as a stage 1 monster
06:18can you win as a hunter
06:20when the monster is stage 3
06:21what can you do then?
06:22it's very much more difficult
06:23which is like why early
06:25the game
06:26the game is oriented around
06:28early on as the hunter
06:29you're like we have to stop this thing evolving
06:30because the moment it's
06:31when it's evolved to stage 3
06:33our job is going to be real hard
06:34it's not impossible by any stretch of the imagination
06:36but at that point
06:38you are dealing with a way more powerful monster
06:40and you have to be
06:41really, really on your game
06:42our guys
06:44really advanced players can do it
06:45it's fine
06:46you know
06:47but at the same time
06:48against a really good
06:49you had say
06:50let's think about this
06:51if you had a rank 30 monster
06:54against a rank 30 hunter team
06:56and they've never encountered the monster
06:57so he's got full health, full armor
06:59I'm probably always going to side with the monster player
07:02it's not impossible
07:02what you find in our game
07:04it's about encounters
07:06and before you actually kill the monster
07:08you might have 3 or 4 encounters with the monster
07:10because any damage that you do
07:12to that health bar is permanent
07:13so you've got a lot of new players
07:15when they come into the game
07:16they think
07:16hey look
07:17let's kill the monster
07:17kill the monster
07:18kill the monster
07:18and it's like
07:18it's actually okay to flee
07:20on both sides
07:21the monster has his armor
07:22which is rechargeable
07:23so a good tactic
07:24as a monster
07:25is to flee
07:26once you've done the armor
07:27once you've used the armor
07:29and actually get away
07:30and a really crafty hunter team
07:32well we know this
07:33they'll go in
07:33they'll not trap the monster
07:34instantly
07:35they'll save all their trapping stuff
07:37because they don't want to use the cooldowns
07:38and then the moment
07:39he's looking to flee
07:40that's when they actually
07:41that's when they snap in
07:42and they keep him in there
07:44and then they're doing permanent damage
07:45and again
07:46you've got to not freak out
07:47that he's getting away
07:48yeah you certainly want to keep on his tail
07:51and keep a distance from him
07:52to stop him from evolving
07:54but
07:55the key is like
07:56over the course of two
07:57three encounters
07:58so then what usually happens
07:59is that a monster gets to stage three
08:01he's coming over
08:02he's got full armor
08:02but he's only got half his health
08:04so again
08:05that's majorly even
08:07to the battlefield
08:08also one of the things
08:09you can use
08:09is once he's stage three
08:11he's strong enough to
08:14destroy an objective
08:14on the map
08:15it's kind of how we
08:16how we force an endgame
08:17rather than
08:17this big cat and mouse
08:19that lasts forever
08:20so
08:21we have an endgame objective
08:22and
08:23within the map
08:24that we're showing today
08:25it's actually not
08:26it's a generator
08:27that you have to destroy
08:28on a dam
08:29so what it does
08:30is once you see him
08:30go to stage three
08:31a lot of the hunter teams
08:32they'll fall in on that position
08:33and they'll fortify that position
08:35so you've got Maggie
08:36with harpoon traps
08:37she'll put harpoon traps down
08:38you've got other guys
08:39with toxic grenades
08:40sentry guns
08:41and stuff like that
08:41so you'll actually create
08:42a defensive position
08:43you'll actually get to
08:45an area of the map
08:45like I said
08:46you turn from being the hunters
08:48to being the hunted
08:49so you know this
08:51and you change the way
08:52you kind of strategically prepare
08:53you get into a good spot for you
08:55no longer are you sort of chasing
08:57around the map
08:58so again
08:59the game has these
09:00even in this 15 minute period
09:02which is usually like the sweet
09:0312 to 15 minutes
09:04is the sweet spot
09:05for a game length
09:07you have this ebb and flow
09:08you have this change of game
09:09which is again
09:10one of the really interesting things
09:11I think about the game
09:12fantastic
