00:02Fancy a shooter with a sense of humour?
00:04Then Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare
00:06could be the game you're looking for.
00:12Now guys, it's fair to say that PVZ
00:14has always had its tongue firmly in its cheek
00:17and this game is no different is it?
00:19No, I think humour is one of the key tenets
00:20of Plants vs Zombies as a franchise
00:22so whenever we put together an asset
00:24or talk about the game we want to make sure
00:26that humour sort of undercuts everything we do.
00:28There's a lot of potential with the franchise
00:31to make fun of the genre
00:33but at the same time have a lot of fun with it.
00:35Because when we first saw the trailer at E3
00:37everyone thought this was a Battlefield trailer
00:39but it certainly wasn't was it?
00:41No, I think that was one of the fun reasons
00:43or one of the fun parts of actually being first
00:45in EA's press conference at E3
00:47is that we started rolling that trailer
00:49with the Battlefield music.
00:50I think people start drawing conclusions
00:52about what they're about to see
00:53and then we sort of flipped the script on them
00:55midway through.
01:00So what did DICE think about that?
01:02They were actually really supportive.
01:04I contacted them directly and said
01:06here's my idea, this is what we want to do
01:09and are you guys cool with that?
01:11And they were fully on board.
01:13So Garden Warfare not only pays homage to Battlefield
01:15it also pays homage to a lot of other games as well, doesn't it?
01:17Absolutely, so we've taken inspiration from the games that we love to play.
01:21When we first sort of teased the game from people
01:23we released a spoof of the Mass Effect series called Grass Effect
01:27which I think everyone got a kick out of
01:28and they're wondering what is it that we're looking at
01:30and they found out a few weeks later at E3.
01:32We had images like Bite and Fall, there was a reference to Madden
01:35using our football zombie which really got a lot of hits and attention.
01:39Dragon Age, Pedal of Honor, Dead Face which is a funny one as well.
01:44So we've definitely gotten a lot of mileage out of existing EA franchises.
01:47Do you reckon they might somehow work their way into the game in future DLC possibly?
01:51Possibly, they might give us some inspiration for the future.
01:54So Darren, when you were designing the trailer, what was the process behind that?
01:58Actually, it came out of the feeling that I thought it was a bad idea
02:01and how my mind changed about it.
02:04I wanted to get out ahead of what I perceived the criticism would be
02:08and show that we're going to have fun with this
02:11and we're not going to take ourselves too seriously
02:13and the PvZ that you know and love is still intact sort of thing.
02:17Do you think sometimes the game industry itself takes itself a little bit too seriously?
02:21I think there's no question the game industry takes itself too seriously sometimes.
02:24so it's always good to be on the funny side of that versus the too serious I think
02:29because it kind of opens you up to do almost whatever you want
02:33because you're not constrained by trying to replicate realism or be too serious with the thing you do.
02:37Or outdo anybody else with your realism or whatever it is, what have you.
02:42If you're not taking yourself too seriously, you end up having more fun.
02:57We will...
02:59We will...
03:01We will...
03:01We will...
03:02We will...
03:03What have you...
03:05We will...
