00:00Welcome!
00:01In this video I will explain which pixel art software should you use.
00:05Please do keep in mind that all of the softwares here on the list and in this section have
00:11all the options you need to do everything in pixel art.
00:14So they have the options to create sprites, to export sprites, you can create animations
00:20and tiles in all of them.
00:22Now certain software do it better than the other so they are stronger in one field when
00:27they are weaker in another.
00:29Some are free, some are paid.
00:31So let's go and let me just quickly run over the four that I picked for you.
00:36First one is the free one, this is Piscal.
00:39The main advantage of this program is that well it's free but it's also browser based.
00:45You have everything you need, you have layers, you have animations, you have all the tools
00:50that you need to create nice pixel art.
00:52When it comes to pixelated this is a paid software, it costs $9, one time purchase.
00:58And you get an access to this extremely useful software when it comes to tiling systems.
01:05Now yes you can do animation here but pixeledit is really known for its tiling based system.
01:14You can create tiles really easily in it and that means creating very very fast games.
01:20Now when it comes to a sprite, a sprite is probably the number one tool when it comes to pixel
01:25art.
01:25You can pretty much do anything you want.
01:28You can animate, you can attack frames, do onion skin, you can create your own color palettes,
01:32you have custom brushes, exporting, importing, pretty much everything you actually need.
01:39But it doesn't have a very nice tiling system as pixelated does now.
01:45Like I said pixeledit is the best when it comes to tiles.
01:48When it comes to everything else a sprite is number one.
01:52Now a sprite you can buy it and I believe it goes to steam and it costs $15.
01:58These are the three main pixel art tools that I personally love to use.
02:03Piskal is the free one and it's the best one.
02:06I intended to include Krita and Gimp in this entire section but however those two software
02:14are not really that beginner friendly when it comes to creating pixel art, especially when
02:19it comes to animation.
02:20It's not intuitive and it's very very limited.
02:24But Piskal is doing the awesome job for being a free online editor for pixel art and I highly
02:30suggest it if you don't have currently the option to buy pixelated or a sprite.
02:36Now the last one on the list is Photoshop.
02:38I included this one only for existing artists that use 2D digital art, be it for animation,
02:46for concept art or for design, doesn't matter.
02:51Use Photoshop for pixel art only and only if you already have Photoshop.
02:57Please do not purchase Photoshop if you are doing the pixel art only.
03:02Photoshop is mainly used for photo manipulation and creating different designs and 2D digital
03:08art but it's not intended for pixel art because right in the start first you need to make
03:14your tools work for pixel art you need to actually tweak them a little bit and even after that
03:20the animation in Photoshop is really really horrible.
03:24I will explain how to do it in this section but I highly suggest that you avoid Photoshop
03:29if you can but yes I included it here just for those of you who already have Photoshop and
03:36don't want to switch anything else.
03:38What do I personally use?
03:41Well I use pixel edit for creating tiles and I use a sprite for creating characters and
03:46animations.
03:47Occasionally I will use Photoshop for creating high resolution backgrounds and I'm talking
03:52about 320 pixels by 160 so kinda high resolution but yes pixel I don't use because a sprite has
04:03everything that pixel has and even more but again this isn't free.
04:09You have the trial version, the free version you can try out, same applies to pixel edit.
04:14So if you don't want to invest currently in any extra pixel art program please go with
04:19Piscal it will be more than enough I assure you.
04:22You can go all the way to export level with Piscal but once you get to the highest level you
04:28certainly will want to go to pixel edit and a sprite because they will just fasten your
04:35workflow.
04:36Ok so this is it for this video I will see you in the next one well I will start
04:40actually
04:40explaining how to use these softwares.
