00:23Today, I'm going to be using all my skills to find the perfect place for Sarah and her son, Henry.
00:28And I'm out to impress.

00:57But do I find Sarah her dream place in the sun?

01:10Sarah first discovered Fertive Ventura eight years ago when a close friend of hers bought a house here.
01:17And she's been visiting regularly ever since.
01:20She fell in love with the island and now, in the position to buy her own holiday home, has brought
01:25along her son, Henry, to help with the search.
01:29Sarah, who owns a women's wear shop in Nottinghamshire, has a budget of £230,000 to buy a holiday home
01:36in Fertive Ventura to use with her two sons and two grandchildren.
01:39The minute you get there, there's a really relaxed vibe. Nice restaurants, lovely beaches, nice scenery.
01:48She thinks her elder son, Henry, who now runs the shop alongside her, will be the perfect partner on this
01:54house hunt.
01:55We enjoy a lot of the same things, skiing, eating, a new glass of wine.

02:01Generally, we get on really well.

02:07Fuertive Ventura takes about four and a half hours to fly from the UK.
02:11And everywhere on the island's north coast is three quarters of an hour drive or less from the main airport.
02:18Even though Fuertive Ventura is the largest of all Canary Islands in terms of size, it's actually the smallest in
02:24terms of population, with 150 beaches and stunning volcanic scenery.
02:30The main tourist town in the north of the island is Corralejo and there are plenty of less lively places
02:37to stay and soak in the more than 3,000 hours of sunshine Fuertive Ventura averages each year.
02:43With house prices rising by 7% in the past year and limited housing stock on the island, Fuertive Ventura
02:51is very much a seller's market.
02:53But whilst you can expect to pay 300,000 pounds for a three bedroom property in good condition close to
03:00the beach in the north's main town of Corralejo, there are more affordable options available.
03:05So, I'm confident I'll be able to show Sarah and Henry a good choice of properties.
03:11Before we get going, I'm meeting up with my house hunters on the Playa de los Veralitos, a very popular
03:17beach right in the heart of Corralejo.
03:19Well, welcome Henry and Sarah to Fuertive Ventura. This is your first time Henry?
03:25That's right, yeah.
03:26How are you both feeling?
03:27Excited, really excited, yeah.
03:29So, why have you decided to do this now in your life?
03:32I lost my husband three years ago and we always had lots of adventures and one of the things he
03:37said to me was, keep having adventures.
03:39So, I think he'd be really pleased.
03:42And you're relying on trusty Henry?
03:44Yes.
03:44To help you find somewhere?
03:45That's right, yes.
03:46I'm really happy that you've also been inspired by your friend. Whereabouts is it that she has her house?
03:53She lives at Villa Verde.
03:55Right.
03:55She's always recommending it. She's actually been wanting me to look for somewhere for quite a few years.
04:01So, are you planning this more of a holiday home or somewhere that eventually you might move out to full
04:07time?
04:07I think it'll always be a holiday home really, although I'd like to spend quite a bit of time here,
04:12especially with having young grandchildren.
04:15We've got to have somewhere to send the grandkids after all.
04:18Yeah, yeah.
04:19I had to do my babysitting duties.
04:21So, you won't be having any lads holidays here then.
04:23I've not run that one past the wark yet.
04:26What is it that you want to do while you're out here? Just relax and have some sunshine really.
04:30I quite like walking, I like reading, nothing too sporty I'm afraid.
04:36Henry?
04:37I enjoy swimming in the sea.
04:38My brother plays a lot of padel so I might play a bit of that if he ever comes over
04:43and just getting involved in the sort of local culture, eating out, I love nice food.
04:49And in terms of the property, a house or an apartment, are you quite open minded with that?
04:54It's quite open really. We would prefer like a ground floor or first floor if it was an apartment.
04:59We definitely need two bedrooms, three would be great. If it's near to the beach, we don't need a pool.
05:06But if we were further away, we would want access to a pool, not necessarily one of our own.
05:11My kids are one and two and they love to play in the water, you know.
05:15Okay.
05:15I would really like some outside space, because if you're in a beautiful country with a nice weather, you want
05:21to be outside.
05:22How do you feel about any work doing? How handy are you?
05:25I don't mind doing a bit of painting and decorating. I didn't really want to do a lot of work.
05:31The less work, the better really, isn't it?
05:34Henry would like to come straight away.
05:36Yeah, exactly.
05:37I know you've got a budget of £230,000. If I were to see something that just needed a little
05:43bit extra, can you stretch that budget a little bit further?
05:47You said, didn't you, we've got an extra £20,000 if you find the perfect place.
05:52Yes.
05:52So we can stretch it to £250,000 if I find something perfect for you.

06:09Oh, I'm really pleased that Sarah and Henry have such a good idea of where they want to be and
06:14the sort of property they're after.
06:16And with that maximum budget of £250,000, I'm confident I can show them some options that could fit the
06:23bill.
06:23Before we visit the first of them, we're going to Villa Verde, the inland town where Sarah's friends live.
06:30Well, I know this is an area that you know. What do you like about it?
06:34Well, there's beautiful restaurants, but it's very peaceful.
06:36You're out in the country, nice and quiet.
06:39Yeah.
06:39But within ten minutes, you can be down amongst the shops, the restaurants and down on the beach.
06:45So, yeah, I think this is a really good spot.
06:47And also, if you're prepared to put that book down and do something a little bit energetic,
06:53they have really fantastic group nature walks around here.
06:56Get you walking up a volcano, couldn't they?
06:58That would be really good. That's something I'd really enjoy.
07:01Yeah. Our first property that I'm taking you to is a 15-minute drive from here.

07:09That 15-minute drive takes us to an area called Parque Holandaise,
07:14where there's a roughly 50-50 mix of Spanish and international residents.
07:18I found Sarah and Henry a bungalow on a lovely low-rise development full of palm trees,
07:24but I've had to stretch right to the top of Sarah's budget here.
07:27So, here we are, our first property.
07:30And this lovely urbanisation has 75 properties that all share this lovely swimming pool area.
07:36This would be perfect for the kids.
07:38Yeah. They'll be so excited to be near the pool and be near the water.
07:41Definitely.
07:42It's a great location.
07:44You're about 20 minutes from Corraleco.
07:45Over there, you've got a couple of restaurants.
07:47There's a supermarket, a bar, and, of course, the beach.
07:50It's about a five-minute drive from here,
07:52so I think you'll be quite excited to see this one I've got.
07:55Yeah, can't wait.

08:04So, here you've got your two-bedroom bungalow.
08:06Lots of inside-outside entertaining space.

08:14You know, we've got the cactus over there in the barrel.
08:17We've got the lovely volcanic rock and then the railway sleepers.

08:22We can just see the children running round the house now, like, in the sun.

08:27You've got a lot of undercover, which will be great in the summer.

08:30In the winter when you want to do some sunbathing.
08:33The sun is here in the morning and it goes round the back in the evening,
08:36so you do get all day in the sun or in the shade.
08:40I don't know how you're going to beat this one, Lucy.
08:42I mean, it's everything I asked for.

08:46£250,000 is what this is marketed for and there is not much room to negotiate.
08:51We're very happy.
08:51We have the wiggle room for a reason.

09:00This bungalow has access to the communal pool, a walled garden with a covered dining area,
09:06a smaller strip of garden to one side and a covered courtyard area at the back.
09:12Inside, there's a light and airy open-plan living, dining and kitchen area with a slightly quirky decor,
09:18the main bedroom, a spacious second bedroom and a shower room.
09:24So, straight into a very high, vaulted, sociable, lovely open-plan space, really, isn't it?

09:34I think the nice thing is, although there's not a huge amount of space, I love the fact there's a
09:39big dining table,
09:40because we like to get together and have a meal.
09:43Henry's a trained chef.
09:44So, guys, what do you think of the kitchen? I mean, it's quirky, it's not to everybody's taste.
09:48I quite like it. It isn't the kitchen that I would go out and choose if I were buying one,
09:53but it works in this property.
09:55In terms of the decor, do you like what you see?
09:58Yeah, it's got a great blend of modern and more rustic, and that's what you've always wanted.
10:02I like the mixture and I like how the owners have done it.
10:08So, this is one of the two doubles.
10:11Absolutely beautiful.
10:12I think the light colour makes it look really spacious as well.
10:16You know, it's not a huge room, but it's got plenty of space, and the white makes it bright and
10:21light.
10:22Really nice with the windows right there, looking out onto the front as well.
10:28I didn't expect the area to be as big as this.
10:31Yeah.
10:31I think it's lovely, because it's all white, it looks really spacious.

10:40You've got a really great little outhouse, so you can put bikes and all the kids' stuff for the beach

10:47And it goes right the way out round to the front of the building.

10:55Well, look, I want you to go and have a look at the bedroom, the other bedroom, and the bathroom,

11:11I think we're on to a bit of a winner with this property, and actually, I'm feeling quite smug.

11:23We could get another twin bed in here, or a double when the kids are older, because they'd have travel
11:28cots for now.
11:29We could have a sofa bed in the sitting room, so lots of options.

11:35It's always nice to get your house hunt off to a great start, and there's no doubt I've done that
11:40with this bohemian style bungalow, which is on the market for bang on £250,000.
11:47Sarah and Henry seem very happy with it.

11:54We loved inside, yeah.
11:56We really loved it.
11:56Perfect outside space, lovely inside, easy to look after.
12:00And decorated to our tastes as well.
12:03It's modern, rustic, it's got everything.

12:06Moving on, if I was to absolutely just completely nail it and get you something a little better, what would
12:14it be?
12:14It had the two bedrooms with a sofa bed, which is what we asked for.
12:18I guess slightly more space.
12:20Maybe a view, but it would be very hard to beat this one.
12:23Very hard.
12:24I have actually got something else in mind.

12:30Well, that's a pretty perfect start.
12:32But I like the fact there's still a bit of room for improvement.

12:37Our next stop is the town of El Cotillo on the west coast of the island.
12:41To a beach I think Sarah and Henry will definitely want to visit when they come out on their holidays.
12:46And it's very close to my next property choice too.
12:49Well, this is the famous beach, Playa La Concha.
12:53It's one of the most beautiful and natural beaches on the island.
12:58And it's very famous for its beautiful sand and crystal clear waters.
13:02Absolutely amazing.
13:03It was beautiful on the way in.
13:05We had all the surf schools.
13:07It looked very exciting.
13:08Might get you in one of those one day. Mum, what do you think?
13:11I mean, I love to look at it, but I can't see myself out there.
13:15The waves are quite big.
13:16Yeah, yeah.
13:17Now, every year they hold the International Kite Festival on this beach.
13:22They have live music. It really is such a cool place to come.
13:26Yeah, I have actually been to the Kite Festival before with my friends.
13:29And it was really spectacular.
13:32How do you feel about sharing all of that with the family?
13:34I can see us coming down here for a day, really, spending the day.
13:38Yeah, children swimming in the sea, us having a cocktail.
13:41Yes.
13:42Now, guys, we're on to our second property.
13:44It's only a three-minute car drive from here.
13:46Wow.
13:47Exciting.
13:48So close to the beach.
13:49That's fantastic.
13:50Yeah.
13:55Coming up, if Sarah and Henry want a vista,
13:58I think they're going to love my next property
14:01with these wonderful views of the volcanic landscape.
14:11Today, I'm house hunting on the sunny Canary Island of Fuerteventura,
14:15just 60 miles off the coast of Africa, with Sarah and her son, Henry.
14:20And so far, I'm off to a great start.
14:22And I've got a very strong contender.
14:26That contender is this two-bedroom bohemian-style bungalow,
14:30which my house hunter, Sarah, who has a budget of £230,000,
14:35with an additional 20,000 wiggle room and son, Henry, were super keen on.
14:40But when pushed, they asked for a bit more space and a view.
14:44So I'm going to find them both of those for property number two.
14:48It's right by the beach and close to the shops, bars and restaurants
14:52in the town of El Cortillo on Fuerteventura's west coast,
14:55a fairly affordable area where nearly two-thirds of residents are Spanish.
15:00I've had to use some of Sarah's wiggle room here, though.
15:02So, guys, this is the building here, and it's at the back,
15:05and it's a corner duplex.
15:07It doesn't have a swimming pool like our previous property,
15:10but what it does have is two bedrooms, two bathrooms.
15:13What do you think of the curb appeal?
15:15If I'm honest, I did prefer the look from the outside of the first property,
15:20but this is a fantastic position.
15:22I can't believe how close we are to the beach.
15:24We always thought we'd be further out with the price range,
15:28but it's right there. You can see the waves crashing.
15:31It would be so nice to be able to go over with the family
15:33to all these little bars and restaurants
15:35and then walk down to the beach.
15:37It's just gone on to the open market,
15:39and it's currently up for sale for just under £237,500.
15:44Yeah, amazing.
15:45I mean, you've not used all of our wiggle room up,
15:48which is good news.
15:50Shall we go in?

15:53On the lower level of this duplex apartment,
15:56which you access via an external staircase,
15:59there's a terrace with views over the volcanic landscape,
16:01a sunroom off the terrace, a living and dining room,
16:05a separate kitchen, the main bedroom,
16:08which has an ensuite shower room,
16:10a second bedroom and a bathroom.
16:13And upstairs, there's a large roof terrace,
16:15also with volcanic views, a storeroom and a utility room.
16:21So, coming through into the lounge area, I like it.
16:25I like the decor.
16:27It's very different to the other property.
16:29The views are absolutely amazing.
16:30You really get the feel of the island here
16:33by looking at the volcanic rock.
16:34It's everything our previous property doesn't have.
16:37They are so different.
16:39Yeah.
16:39So different.
16:42So, this bedroom has the ensuite,
16:45and it's probably the biggest,
16:46with the views, which are incredible.
16:49Yeah, that's fantastic.
16:50It is. It is lovely.
16:52So, I would say this is going to be my room, then.
16:55Well, quite right, too.
16:57You've also got an abundance of storage.
16:59Yep.
17:00I think in this house,
17:02I would probably put my stamp on it a little bit more.
17:05It isn't so much to my taste as the last one.

17:08But that's completely possible.

17:20The volcanic views are absolutely fantastic.
17:23It's so close to the beach and beautiful views.
17:26In terms of the sunrise, it will just be there,
17:29so it will be lovely in the mornings.
17:30Seeing the sunrise from this terrace.
17:32Yeah, over the mountains,
17:34with a glass of orange juice or a cocktail.
17:36And you get a really huge amount of space as well.
17:40Space-wise, this is great,
17:42but I'm not sure if the space is as usable as in property one,
17:46because you could be in and out, in and out,
17:48whereas here, you have to come up and stay here
17:52and then go back.
17:53It's not so much in and out.
17:54But the view is fantastic.
17:57Guys, go downstairs, have another look around,
18:00and then I'll catch up with you later outside
18:02for a bit of a chat.

18:20That's a bit more work than we were sort of expecting.

18:28This is good for sheltering you from the winds.
18:31They are a little gale force at times.
18:33Lovely. Plenty of terraces, plenty of space.

18:42This duplex apartment, which is on the market
18:44for just under £237,500,
18:48definitely delivers the space that Sarah and Henry wanted,
18:51along with some gorgeous views and a great location.
18:54I'm looking forward to hearing their final thoughts.
18:57So you had a good look around.
18:59Yeah, it was very different from the first property.
19:02I think the downsides would be the kitchen's very small
19:06and a bit dislocated from the rest of the building.
19:10There's a lot of stairs, which is OK for me,
19:12but for the little children, you know, and prams and bush chairs,
19:16there's a lot of stairs.
19:17But then the good things are the views, the volcanic views
19:20and the proximity to the sea, amazing.
19:24Do you think you would like to make this a contender?
19:27It's a contender, but at the moment we're preferring,
19:30both of us prefer the first one.
19:32Yeah, we're trying to decide what's more important,
19:34whether it's location or the property itself.
19:37Or the property itself.

20:21What's the buying process like when you got over here?
20:23The buying process at the time then, I think maybe a bit easier,
20:26but you get a good estate agent
20:28and they will run you through the whole process,
20:31get you in contact with the proper lawyer
20:32and yeah, it's easy.
20:34What is it like at night around here?
20:36Here, the atmosphere is fantastic
20:38and just behind here, you've got music square,
20:41we have live music every night
20:42and the people there, everyone gets up dancing
20:44and you can come here on your own and feel safe
20:47and you meet people, you know, people say hello.
20:50You could sit in a bar on your own
20:51and someone next to you like,
20:53do you live here, are you on holiday?
20:55Yeah, that sort of thing.
20:56And it's really good.
20:57Did you speak Spanish when you...
20:58No, no.
20:59The best way to learn Spanish, be with the Spanish.

21:17Coming up, I'm hoping my next property,
21:20a spacious three-bed apartment with this huge garden,
21:24proves a big hit with Henry and Sarah.
21:33Today, I'm house hunting in and around the lovely towns
21:37of northern Fertaventura, the oldest of the Canary Islands.
21:40And so far, my first property, the Boho Bungalow,
21:44is still firmly in the lead.
21:47Yes, the current favourite of my house hunter, Sarah,
21:50who has a maximum budget of £250,000
21:53and her son Henry, is this bungalow
21:56with a communal pool and a quirky bohemian feel.
21:59They also liked my second place,
22:01this duplex apartment with great views just metres from the beach.
22:05I'm hoping to make it three contenders out of three
22:08with property number three.
22:10It's in an area called Heafond
22:12on the outskirts of the town of Corlejo,
22:14which is one of the most expensive parts
22:16of the island's north coast.
22:18To get my house hunters a place with three bedrooms,
22:21I've had to go a touch over Sarah's maximum budget,
22:23though I've been told there's a fair bit of flexibility
22:26on the price.
22:27So, welcome to our third property.
22:31And we've got a ground-floor three-bedroom apartment in this huge complex.
22:36The exterior is a bit nicer than the last property.
22:40Yes, I like it. I like the curb appeal.
22:42So, there's a fabulous swimming pool as well.
22:44And again, it's a stroll into town.
22:46But the beach is literally a ten-minute drive.
22:49That's fantastic, isn't it?
22:50You've found another nice property by the looks of it.
22:53So, it's all on one level.
22:54It's the ground-floor apartment.
22:56It's got an extra bedroom.
22:57So, it's three bedrooms, two bathrooms.
23:00The price is just under £253,500.
23:03Now, I know it is just over the top end of your budget,
23:07but I have had a chat with the agent and she is confident
23:09that they would be happy to negotiate.
23:11As long as we could do it within our budget.

32:19My house hunter, Sarah, who has a maximum budget of £250,000 and her son, Henry, are
32:26currently keen on this bohemian-style bungalow with a communal pool and lots of outside space.
32:32This large ground-floor apartment with a very big garden and this first-floor apartment
32:38with a roof terrace with sea and mountain views.
32:41And I'm super excited to be able to show them my fifth and final property, this lovely
32:47three-bedroom house with lots of communal facilities and stunning views.
32:52Before we go there, though, I'm driving 15 minutes inland from Corralejo to take a look
32:58at this ultra-minimalist cubist-style three-bedroom villa priced at just over £1.4 million.

34:53It's a very popular inland town with lots going on.
34:56So, this is one of the most affluent and expensive towns in Fuerteventura.
35:02You have beautiful properties here along with some of the best restaurants there are in the area.

35:12If you fancy having a lovely day out, you can go to Calderon Hondo, which is a volcano.
35:16It's just out of town.
35:17You can walk to the top, but if you don't want to do that, you can get on a camel
35:22and you can go on camelback.
35:24I think that's the thing for us, Henry.
35:26I think we should definitely do the camel.
35:28Race camels up a volcano.

35:33The property I'm now taking you to, which is our fifth and final property, is three miles out of town.
35:39It's a ten-minute drive from here.

35:43Our final stop on this house hunt is in the seaside town of Mahanicho, a mainly residential area, though it's
35:50becoming increasingly popular with second homeowners.
35:52Demand for properties here has led to price increases of up to 20% in the last couple of years,
35:59so I've had to use up some wiggle room here.
36:01So, I'm spoiling you now with a semi-detached house, and I like to call this front line.
36:08So, you do get amazing views of the rustic coastline.
36:13Views to the sea. To be able to see the sea.
36:16The property, well, it's like nothing I've shown you so far.
36:18It's got three bedrooms, there are two terraces, a really generous front and back garden.
36:25It looks as if the house is a little bit bigger than some we've looked at.
36:29So, it's currently being marketed at just over £241,500.
36:34I thought you would have used up the wiggle room and more, but I can't believe it's on at that.
36:38I expected it to be really very top of our budget.

36:48This semi-detached house has access to facilities like pools and tennis courts, and has private

37:06will appeal to Sarah, as well as two bedrooms perfect for Henry and his family, and a bathroom.
37:12Upstairs, there's the main bedroom, which comes with an ensuite bathroom.
37:18So, this room works very hard to do a lot.
37:22You can eat here, you can sit and watch TV, you can walk out onto your terrace.
