00:01it's the nation's favorite antiques experts behind the wheel of a classic car
00:06and a goal to scar britain for antiques the aim to make the biggest profit at auction
00:15but it's no mean feat there'll be worthy winners and valiant losers oh dear will it be the high
00:23road to glory i feel like we're in a james bond film or the slow road to disaster
00:29this is antiques road trip
00:42greetings from the garden of england we're in kent
00:47mark i like your bow ties thank you so much bow ties are cool well i'd rather like your dungareens
00:52to be honest oh cute my dad wore a bow tie to work every day so i feel a little
00:57bit like i'm
00:57sat with my dad a little bit go daddy barma well turned out and back on the road it's derby's
01:06own
01:06auctioneer and jewelry whiz izzy barma with design buff buddy mark hill in their bright red 1972
01:13opal manta a for this their penultimate leg i nearly bought some dungarees except my dungarees were
01:21shorts dungarees and i put them on and came out of changing room and my partner burst out laughing
01:25and said i look like a big baby so i have dungaree envy
01:30i'll never look at rompers the same way again
01:33last time out amid antics
01:36gotta be done
01:39wow
01:39mark scooped up some glorious glass
01:42i'm in love with it
01:43izzy took a break from buying shelly china
01:45oh i've got not enough hands
01:47and snapped up some bakelite beads instead at 200 pounds 220 bit they struck gold at auction
01:53well worn then at 260
01:59nudging her into the lead with two wins to one in their best of five battle
02:04well done bravo thank you thank you i'm about to say encore but i don't want an encore
02:10oh oh yes i'd quite like an encore i bet you would congratulations with a twist since setting
02:18off in the northeast it's been coastal capers all the way through lincolnshire then norfolk
02:23now a seaside spin around kent before coming to a halt in sussex this is a sort of seaside
02:29antique road trip isn't it oh i do like to be beside the seaside oh i do like to be
02:37beside
02:37the sea that's the spirit mark on this trip they're making their way towards the village
02:43of apple door to get there they'll take a scenic meander along the coast starting in sunny margate
02:51perched on the isle of thanet this quintessential seaside resort is where deck chairs and donkey
02:56rides first trotted into holiday tradition izzy and mark's first port of court is rg scott's furniture
03:03mart come on trouble a bit of a legend in road trip folklore this one an ice works in the
03:091930s today
03:11it's a treasure trove of vintage salvage and all things heritage spread across three jam-packed floors
03:18armed with a fresh 200 pounds each it's time to rummage brutal and have a jolly good rake around
03:24i don't i should stop shopping for myself this is terrible i do not need another pin i do not
03:30need
03:30another pin for a man of style it's all in the finishing touches
03:37i do love a bit of bonkers and this certainly qualifies as bonkers a sort of shop display piece
03:44for i'm guessing sort of sewing shop you've got little sort of spools of thread you've got needles
03:50you've got lace so i would love this to date from sort of the late 19th or even the early
03:5620th century
03:57but i just think this is actually a late 20th century piece and it's trying to look a lot older
04:03if it was older i would have snapped this up but i'm afraid a stitch in time saves nine this
04:10ain't going
04:10to be mine certainly not this time neatly rhymed on he goes meanwhile izzy's busy stitching together
04:19the plans of her own thimbles not for me
04:26i am forever drawn to novelty items it is a book marker or a place marker now what i was
04:33hoping for
04:34one silver hallmarks and two the name as brown co and it has neither it does have made in england
04:41and
04:42we have got a patent number here which was originally awarded to asprey and these were made in silver
04:48they were sort of of the period of george v so sort of early 20th century and this is in
04:54it's either
04:55chrome plated or stainless steel and not in silver so how does it work this open end clippy end you
05:02clip
05:02onto the edge of your book and then you just put this little pointy end in your page ingenious izzy
05:09what
05:09every good read deserves and then you open it up and there it is on your page do you know
05:14what
05:15it's five quid five pounds it's a no-brainer take you with me thank you very much the perfect
05:21companion to a page turner mark mark mark mark this would be the best place for a game of hide
05:28and seek
05:28oh it's so wood let's do this do you want to hide and now count okay close your eyes and
05:33your hands one
05:35two three it's antiques and antics today six seven eight i hope she's not counting to one hundred
05:46ten ready or not here i come
05:51not sure mark's quite got the hang of the hide part this is brilliant did i follow you
05:59thank you dear a picture perfect hiding spot right back to business you two
06:08for past jewelry i have to have a look i can't not look oh oh you are lovely
06:15victorian is a brooch and you've got this beautiful these different agates and jaspers set in here
06:21it's really pretty oh that's a shame it would have had a little loop there it's broken it snapped
06:28off ah what else have we got all sorts of beaded silvery bits what are you you are a little
06:36tie pin
06:36modeled as a little safety pin i'm wondering if this might be gold but it's not hallmarked now i can't
06:44see any signs of wear so if it were a gold plate where the gold plate might have worn and
06:49rubbed off from
06:49wear so it could be worth it you know it would look nice for a gentleman to just hold his
06:54tie
06:54together or on a cravat hmm could be worth a little punt for a tenner perfect for a certain stylish
07:01someone but first a chinwag with owner ron hello ron hi izzy what can i do for you today well
07:09two of
07:09the smallest items in your shop ron all counts well a little tie pin at 10 a little bookmarker at
07:15five
07:15i make that 15 you make it 15 we can both count no need to haggle when the price is
07:20right 10 for the
07:21pin and a fiver for the bookmarker job done that leaves izzy with 185 pounds still to splurge well
07:29thank you i'll see you soon all right thanks very much now how's our tie-toting gent fairing fancy a
07:36pew
07:37perhaps like being a kid again not for the first time today that's the joy of antiques
07:46that is very unusual and i haven't seen something quite like that for some time so what we're looking
07:53at is a tiny bed pan so normally of course these would be made in brass or wood and you'd
07:59fill them
07:59with hot coals and slide them under the covers to keep you warm and warm up your bed but this
08:04one appears
08:04to be made in aha now we've got silver hallmarks on here this piece is made of solid silver and
08:11it
08:11was produced in britain so we've got lns and that's for levi and salomon i think silversmiths in birmingham
08:17and then a date letter and i'm guessing that's sort of 1908 somewhere around there so we've got a little
08:22edwardian silver novelty bed pan what on earth is it for my thoughts exactly well i guess you could put
08:31potpourri or something like that in it and sort of maybe have it on your desk or dressing table to
08:36waft out a wonderful scent and 45 pounds i just need to bring that price down in order to give
08:45it
08:45its best chance what an absolutely charming little thing it's quite warmed my heart let's see if you can
08:53charm ron to turn down the price ron hello how are you uh a bit overwhelmed if i'm all honest
09:00i found
09:01one thing that has really warmed the cockles of my heart yeah let's have a look not quite hot enough
09:07yet and what i'm looking for is a hot deal well i'm afraid you've picked something you're not going
09:11to get a hot deal on this is a nice little thing 40 quid off you but that's the best
09:15it's going to get
09:16i'm afraid 40 pounds that will do a deal on that providing you can give me some silver polish to
09:22clean it up yeah no problem that's 40 pounds leaving mark with 160 pounds still in his pocket
09:29that's fantastic thank you so much ron i'm off to find the polish good show thanks take care
09:34and off he strides miniature bed pan in hand in search of his chum who seems thoroughly revived by
09:42the sea air we should play a game all the things we can think of about the seaside and you
09:47can't say
09:47the same thing twice okay buckets and spades sand waves sea bustles good one my turn now parasol water
09:56sand down well that didn't last long did it okay sea urchins
10:05a quick fire round on bakelite might be safer
10:09our seaside specialists are scooting across the peninsula where izzy is being dropped off at ramsgate
10:17a former bustling georgian resort once favored by queen victoria and later a seaside muse for vincent van
10:23gogh someone's singing his praises is he's headed to petticoat lane emporium a vast and storied space
10:33that's seen it all it's been a tool makers at old factory and even a roller hockey rink these days
10:39it's 10 000 square feet of collectibles and curios high roller izzy's got 185 pounds to splurge
10:48well i know what one of these is just not one to go under the hammer this time
10:59oh this always reminds me of sweeties because of all these colored nodules what this is it's from
11:06the czech republic it's mid 20th century it's mitzisov and it's by a designer called frantisek zemek and
11:14the range which comprises similar items made of colorless glass with these colored nodules the
11:21range is the rhapsody range frantisek zemek was chief designer at the mstischoff glasswork in 1950s
11:30czechoslovakia known for bold form and vibrant color now it's 25 pounds it's in good condition
11:38i think it's worth an ask as to how much it could be tempting as a jar of bonbons for
11:45now it's back on
11:46the road where mark is riding solo with one eye on the scoreboard she's on it that izzy barma her
11:53knowledge is like the contents of an encyclopedia able to spot those hidden bargains van gogh lived in
12:00ramsgate at some point in time and you know it would surprise me if she came back with a van
12:05gogh
12:05off yes and ever so likely mark's making his way a little bit further along the kent coast
12:13to the historic town of deal overlooking the english channel it boasts a tudor artillery castle built by
12:21enery the eighth and a colorful past as a smuggler's haunt and with any luck mark will be backing a
12:27deal
12:28of his own at quill antique this looks uh interesting to me where he's welcomed by the owner
12:34hello alan hello mark wow it's a feast for the eyes where do i start i'm gonna go off and
12:42have a wander
12:43and a proper rummage too no stone or potential gem left unturned
12:51look at all of these objects an interesting fellow over here so this is not a model duck that you
12:58might
12:58stick on the end of a mantelpiece or put in your bath at bath time this is a duck decoy
13:03duck decoys have
13:05been used for centuries first crafted by hunters to attract wild fowl to land on water they'd fly down
13:12swoop to surround the other ducks and then blam steady on duck decoys have become incredibly collectible
13:20they're being massively reproduced today however so i'm looking for signs of wear and there is a little
13:27bit of damage to his beak i don't think it's greatly old but i'm certainly thinking it's earlier in the
13:3420th century i like his painted eyes no price on him he may well be a good possibility for me
13:44i shall seat him back up there for the moment and carry on hunting getting his ducks in a row
13:51eh or one of them anyway meanwhile over in ramsgate is he is still on the lookout
14:00i know what this is i don't even need to turn it over it's charles wildman it's foley china
14:06it's early shelley and i have been buying early shelley charles wildman all week don't we know it
14:14and they haven't made the money that they should have done perhaps this is the third time lucky
14:18there we go there's the cw for charles wildman 10 pounds it's late 19th century now it's a real real
14:26real shame that it is simply the saucer but you never know someone might already have the cup
14:33or simply a charles wildman collector head is saying don't do it heart is saying do it
14:40so of course i'm gonna do it sometimes you gotta follow your heart eh let's see how dealer lily
14:47feels about the price hello lily hiya i found these two items czech glass bowl that's 25 i've got
14:56an early shelley charles wildman saucer 10 pounds could i be cheeky and offer you 25 for the two
15:02yes you can fantastic thank you very much can't argue with that then 10 pounds for the saucer 15
15:09for the czech bowl short sweet and sorted thank you very much enjoy the rest of your day thank you
15:15see you later see you later leaving izzy with 160 pounds still in her pocket
15:23now how's our wheeler dealer in deal
15:28oh now i'm rather hoping that if i turn this upside down
15:35there'll be a stamped mark on the bottom i was rather hoping it was a piece of studio pottery
15:43but the label says chinese bowl with wood glaze so that's actually kind of interesting to me
15:51the studio pottery movement championed handcrafted ceramics as individual works of art
15:58led by bernard leach often called the father of british studio pottery
16:04so a lot of the studio pottery pioneers like bernard leach were heavily inspired by chinese japanese
16:11and korean ceramics and probably something along these lines i really like this sort of dripped
16:19earthy brown glazes here and i love this sort of scored effect running on the inside as well there is
16:27something so very studio pottery about it 30 pounds on it well i think that's something i'd like to have
16:35a
16:35conversation with alan about sounds like that might have bowled him over perhaps alan can shed some more
16:43light alan hello hello hello so here's a rather interesting bowl sort of studio pottery or chinese
16:50maybe i can't see a mark no although i'm wondering what that mark is there it looks possibly like studio
16:58mark i think it is you think it is but do you know what i like it so whichever one
17:04it is i think
17:05i'd still like to buy it if the price is right so i'm interested in this and then the duck
17:11decoy the
17:12painted duck decoy well i could do 50 pounds for the two 50 pounds for the two yes let me
17:17shake you
17:17by the hand island thank you very much that's 25 for the duck decoy and 25 for the bowl leaving
17:23mark
17:24with 110 pounds still tucked in his waistcoat i'm gonna go collect my duck if he flies off he'll have
17:32the duck you've done this before thank you hey wasn't that my line and off mark flies to reunite
17:41with his pal as the day draws to a close what do you fancy doing tonight mark deck chair watch
17:48the sun
17:48go down on a deck chair oh is it just the one deck chair am i sat on the sun
17:52but if you sit on the
17:53sand you make a little sort of pile with the sand and then stick your bottom in it so you
17:57leave a
17:57print of your bottom like a coco de mer beach art with a difference nighty night you two honestly
18:12good morning good morning oh we are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed today
18:19do you have a morning routine at all mark i do i mean i go through all my ablutions and
18:24all the rest
18:24and then it's coffee coffee coffee coffee ideally sort of on the edge of an italian piazza
18:31not quite tuscany but the kent coast has its charms
18:37one yesterday in between shenanigans izzy went on a bit of a spree snapping up a type-in a bookmark
18:45a solo saucer and a czech glass dish this always reminds me of sweeties and all for just 40
18:53pounds leaving her with a resplendent 160 pounds mark also had a good splurge spending 90 pounds on
19:01a glazed bowl a duck decoy and a mini silver bedpan it's quite warmed my heart leaving him with 110
19:08and 10 pounds for today's explorations so what's miss money banks going to buy today something
19:17fantastic naturally but before the shopping resumes there's a brief detour with mark being dropped off
19:24in the seaside town of folkestone we're going to be flying solo at this next one you'll have to put
19:29your big boy pants on i'm sure you'll manage without me think of me though won't you oh i will
19:32don't be thinking of you that's a lie a fond farewell almost folkestone has long been a bustling port and
19:42fashionable seaside resort once attracting distinguished visitors like agatha christie
19:48charles dickens and hg wells but today its story also includes a proud nepalese community rooted in
19:56town's long military ties mark's heading to a nepalese restaurant to meet full of my captain and nepal
20:03born ram bahadur pun ram hello good to see you thank you very much for meeting me so this looks
20:10delicious
20:10it is a very common dessert in our nepalese cuisine sweetest spawn soaked in the yogurt i'm gonna have a
20:17go
20:20that is actually quite delicious so tell me what brought such a large nepalese
20:26community to folkestone former workers who were actually serving the british armed forces were given
20:31right to settle in the uk and many of the goka patron and their family choose to live in foxham
20:41due to military connection most of the people here actually with their best in this barracks
20:47and i myself i was best here during my service of course and an area being very friendly the local
20:55people has been very supportive uh to the government community here in in folkestone
21:01folkestone's military roots run deep from coastal defenses built to deter napoleon to its vital role
21:08as a departure point for troops during both world wars in more recent times it's become home to the
21:15gurkhas elite soldiers from nepal renowned for their courage loyalty and fearsome skill they served in
21:23the british army for over 200 years since 2000 the royal gurkha rifles have been based at folkestone
21:31barracks with many choosing to settle here after service so although you've been traveling all over the
21:38world and you were born in nepal would you call folkestone home yes we do and that's why we actually
21:45settled here you know with my family the uk provided a good opportunity for my family in this
21:51community was you know established the board the need of the 1 000 household you know people of the
21:59ex-gokka veteran and nepalese community here to bring people together and keep traditions alive
22:07the folkestone nepalese community runs events classes and activities at their center
22:13that's mark's next stop where he's meeting kanchan rokamagar the center's coordinator hello kanjan
22:22welcome to the community center yeah it's a hive activity there's a lot going on yes we have a
22:28nepalese handicraft and institution chat running here at the moment everyone here are the wives of the
22:33veterans gurkha veterans who who served in the british army i've never seen weaving like this before
22:39okay let's around the back yeah after you let's have a look here that's the ancient art of backstrap
22:46weaving it's amazingly colorful and so intricate as well and very geometric it looks fascinating
22:56where did you learn to weave like this
23:05yeah she learned it in nepal she's making a bag it's very popular in the nepalese culture so
23:12they they wear the bags whenever they go outside or attend events or for everyday use this is going to
23:18sound a ridiculous question but do you think i could have a go i don't think i could do anything
23:23as complex
23:24as that but yeah of course you can have a go yeah righty-ho looks like something for mark to
23:30put his
23:30back into like this right let's get him all strapped in and see what he's made of this goes around
23:37here
23:38okay insert it in between okay so that goes in here yeah uh-huh and now now i put it
23:45like this yeah
23:47the pattern is supposed to be like the cucumber seeds pull so it's tighter i see and now i want
23:54to
23:54put it through that one that one okay so that goes all the way through here and then yeah like
24:03this
24:03ah there you go but i've got to do it again here haven't i so now i've got to pull
24:07that through
24:08here and then i count one two three four somehow i don't think that bag's getting finished any time
24:17soon rooted in history and thriving in the present the nepalese community in folkestone has woven its
24:24story into the town's fabric a close-knit chapter built on pride friendship and shared traditions that
24:32looks set to flourish for years to come reunited with his chum mark wastes no time regaling izzy
24:43with tales of his talents look what i made look made by my own fair hands you didn't knit it
24:51though
24:51did you no i can see you crossing your fingers i like how it matches the car and i even
24:57learned
24:58how to say thank you in nepalese go on then dannyabad dannyabad dannyabad dannyabad practically fluent
25:08our multilinguals now turn inland bound for the village of chillum where mark's being dropped off
25:15he's making a beeline for bag and barn antiques hoping to bag himself a few treasures set in a restored
25:2317th century barn it's packed to the rafters quite literally with possibilities wow and with 110 pounds
25:31burning a hole in his pocket there's plenty of scope to splurge
25:38i can't resist picking up vintage fountain pens i love them and this one it's by a company called
25:45waterman you really want to go for the big names waterman parker montblanc conway stewart in the uk
25:52and you're really looking ideally for that classic period of the fountain pen so sort of from about the
26:001910s up until about the 1930s and this with its flat tops dates exactly from that period and i think
26:09this
26:09was made in america um to stick in your pocket so it's known as a vest pocket pen so i
26:15would slip it
26:15into don't forget americans call waistcoats vests my vest pocket and you know what for 28 pounds for a
26:22pen that's nearly a hundred years old that's going into my vest pocket and off to the auction
26:27a classic choice let's hope his nibs does rather well out of that
26:34meanwhile his co-rider is gliding solo towards her next shop i'd like to find something a bit
26:41different because i bought a bit of glass and i bought a bit of china and i bought a bit
26:45of jewelry
26:45so it'd be nice to buy something different good plan izzy is making tracks towards the little village
26:53of appledore the epitome of countryside charm with over a thousand years of history appledore has seen
27:01it all trade conflict and settlement leaving its mark as a village with a story to tell
27:07izzy's pulling into station antiques once a railway goods shed now a bustling hub for all things vintage
27:15and collectible with 160 pounds in her pocket she's steaming ahead into a world of possibilities
27:21inside and out any queries dealer anthony is on hand to keep things on track
27:34oh let's put that down slightly creaky dried out handle it's a french wine bottle holder circa 1940s
27:42i haven't seen one of this octagonal form before i quite like it it's just it's that i mean it's
27:48that french shabby chic isn't it it's got that je ne sais quoi about it maybe i love france the
27:54countryside the cheese the wine they've got this sophistication that it's just sometimes i feel that
28:02i do not have not so charm and british chic by the bucket load it's just so stylish now i
28:11can see
28:11that we've got a little bit of damage i think that just adds to its charm so yes i'd like
28:16to find out
28:17how much that is because i could be interested charmed by the shabby chic look let's leave izzy to her
28:24rummaging's and pop over to chillum to see what mischief our man mark is up to
28:31drawn to hiding again i see ted looks impressed
28:39it's not the sort of thing i usually go for at all sort of cutesy dare i even say
28:45kitschy figurines of young children but there's something about the look of this one
28:51that reminds me of an early 20th century illustrator of sort of comic books magazines
28:59called mabel lucy atwell mabel lucy atwell was best known for her illustrations of cherubic children
29:06in books and prints images so beloved they soon adorned ceramics too
29:13and they've always got these sort of round faces often rosy cheeks and little socks that sort of
29:19have fallen down a little bit i want to take a look at her because mabel lucy atwell licensed shelley
29:27to produce a range of ceramics and her figurines of children produced by shelley are worth an absolute
29:33bomb this one doesn't have the quality of shelley but that's rather strange so it says
29:38it's registered applied for hmm that's actually quite curious i wonder whether this is some form
29:48of early version or maybe a trial piece produced by another manufacturer this is 36 pounds says 1950s
29:59and atwell was quite popular into the 50s and 60s and if that link to atwell is there 36 quid
30:05is a deal
30:08looks like mark's fallen for the mysterious figurine time to talk shop with the dealer
30:15colin hello hi mark amazing selection of stuff thank you i have found two we have this rather sort of
30:22charming little girl here in the style i hope of mabel lucy atwell yes and then this pen so you've
30:30got 36
