01:03when everything comes together it's going to work really well it's very faint but if we pull this off
01:09we'll be creating show-stopping rooms oh wow that won't cost the earth
01:20this week the savage squad is in the rebel county of court in town we're meeting a lady whose living
01:27room needs to be judged up and in the countryside a family who want to turn their dated kitchen from
01:34pine to fine i feel like the walls are closing in around me like we're in a sauna before we
01:42get to
01:42that we're off to meet cork gal gwen who moved into this terraced house in 2010 i'm a hundred percent
01:49cork city i live about 15 minutes from cork city itself i had looked for about six months for a
01:56place
01:57to buy and when i walked into this house i was like this is the house for me it actually
02:01turned out that
02:02i knew the person who owned the house previous to me typical cork like everybody knows each other you
02:08know and gwen's home wouldn't be a home without her puppy elsie
02:17one of my favorite things to do is sit on my sofa with elsie my puppy i'm five foot
02:23this dog is 26 kgs already and she's only nine months i'd say if you stretched her out she's nearly
02:30taller than me and this is the room gwen wants help with i am really excited about salvage squad
02:41coming in what i originally intended the room to be was a space for socializing but it's become used
02:49for everything i moved my office in here then when i got my puppy i decided to create train her
02:57i think i got to a point of decorating it in a way that there was a good foundation and
03:03i intended to
03:04add lots more color at that stage and i just never got around to it when it comes to color
03:09gwen has only
03:10one rule i do not like the words cream beige if peter came in here with two liters of magnolia

03:20i would have great hesitation
03:30well gwen peter irvine is anything but beige this designer is all about bringing textures into a space
03:41i'd call my style natural escapist i love natural textures in a room bringing the outside in
03:48just evokes that feeling of like calm and tranquility

04:33don't think her home reflects that this is the room i think it seems to say you need a little

04:38with it yeah what room of the house are we judging up we call it the everything room is the
04:45living room
04:46it is her office when she has friends over they dine there and to top it all off in terms
04:52of design
04:52vision she wants maximal eclectic what does that mean that means everything i love lots of different
04:59things coming together to make something really overall interesting peter has searched the charity
05:07shops free cycle and second-hand sites to find salvage materials and furniture for his design i'm on
05:13a lookout for a chandelier for gwen's room and i think i've come to the right place i want things
05:20to
05:20look expensive because the risk with maximalism is clutter and with clutter comes chaos and it just
05:25makes this place feel cheap the van's not here but the van is safe on land okay tell me what's
05:30in
05:30the van currently it's really great she has a sofa so we're gonna send that off to be upcycled
05:35and i got a chandelier you'll love that oh how big is the chandelier it's actually pretty big yeah what
05:41is this basically the room will be filled with frames because she has the dog and she wants maximalism
05:47nothing can really be on the floor so we need to bring it all up under the walls we're coming
05:51into cork
05:52city i can see the van peter there she is there she is hi darling we miss you

06:45you are ready you are i'm ready so the brief was like maximal eclectic but what i feared was that

06:53space would become childlike so i want to make it quite an elegant space and feel quite artistic
07:00yeah and what i want is the gallery aspect and that maximal styling to be colorful but i think the
07:08bones of the room need to be a nice backdrop to that i wasn't expecting the colors that he had
07:16on the
07:16mood board really curious as to see how they will kind of complement one another pink pink oh that's
07:23kind of unexpected okay well your glasses are pink so do you like the color pink well absolutely
07:30i never thought about that yeah we like bold and colorful so let's go with it and here we go
07:39don't be shy okay okay okay even i'm thinking okay okay is it a barbecue that's a barbecue
07:49i'm a vegetarian not today is this a rug or a carpet to me that looks a bit beige stroke

08:12when you've so much color going on in a room that beige isn't going to be a big moment but

08:36fit in does all of this and a manky barbecue does it all go together in my head yes that's

08:51yeah and also what she doesn't want no beige this could be my favorite makeover ever i'm very excited for
09:03this while we wait for that to play out we're leaving the city and heading to bud event and this

09:10countryside bungalow to meet local woman onya her proud clonic guilty husband dan and kids
09:18we met on an online dating app then dan deleted me so thank god i persevered you wouldn't be here

09:28we moved into the house around the same time we got married three years since april
09:33yeah so it was very hectic so we got married then in june we've been trying to make it our
09:38own since we moved in then and it was perhaps a little bit of fate that brought them to this
09:43house
09:45so i grew up like 10 minutes away in ballyhay and my aunt and uncle and their kids would have
09:51lived in this house so my cousins grew up here and like i would always be up here playing and
09:57in the
09:57playhouse we were trying to buy a site in clan we were never intending on living here it was just
10:03scandalous the pricing is just ridiculous and there was kind of a bit of a lock here that this house
10:08was nearly saw divine timing and they pulled out last minute last minute we couldn't leave this
10:14past us boy so my mom died when i was 20. i wouldn't be one for like signs or whatever
10:21but i feel like
10:22she had something to do with it because it all worked out so conveniently
10:27under the watchful eye of mam this family needs a modern kitchen to carry on family traditions
10:33that's where the savage squad comes in we are looking forward to the savage squad coming in
10:38we wouldn't have picked this kitchen ah no the pine was a nicer shade when it was first installed
10:43but over time it's obviously gotten darker and i feel like the walls are closing in around me
10:48like we're in a sauna so what i want most for the kitchen i suppose is to reflect
10:53our family's personality give something a second chance yeah coming up has peter's pink paint left
11:02gwen feeling peaky how do you feel it's very pink and will kathy's expectations prove too much for
11:09trevor there's a monster work here

11:47isn't at all dangerous what are you doing to me peter we're only using these as a raw canvas okay

11:55you want a maximal eclectic scheme we need as much artwork as we can get in there instead of buying

12:00these are two quid in the charity shop and we're going to just repaint these and use them as blank
12:04canvases just go wild like speaking of wild what's this idea peter has this piece of cardboard holds
12:12the key basically i want gwen's office to be able to pack away okay when it pulls out it creates

12:18same desk scenario that gwen utilizes at the minute but then because she has requested full dining for
12:25when her friends come over i want the piece of furniture then to open out oh so clever i wanted

12:31keep the design quite simple for gwen and not too difficult that she's discouraged from putting it
12:35away the wardrobe doors are brilliant good thank you so much they are exactly right do you think
12:41we'll get that finished today because because there's a big process of like it's primed painted
12:45and all that so yeah while julia gets on with that peter turns his attention to gwen's gallery wall
12:52if she wants maximalist they're going to need a lot more pictures so gwen's called in the mini a-team
12:58to help her nieces they're all same height as you i'm doing a ring i'm doing a flower with the

13:10art studio in full swing we're countryside bound to buddavid where the kitchen is going to go from
13:16dated to contemporary and this one's going to be a family affair we do everything together anyway so why
13:23not renovate the kitchen together you cork people have to stick together so i think corconian designer
13:31kathy angelini is a perfect fit for this project
13:36it's not about playing by the rule book and following trends
13:41with every design i'm always trying to achieve a space that feels really considered and meaningful
13:50kathy you must be so excited we're in court yes finally we're in the real capital okay kathy reign

14:20today's makeover we are going to anya and dan's house yes this is the fabulous kitchen wow the kitchen
14:27at the moment is very much of its time kind of vintage or outdated vintage a bit of both
14:34what is your look aesthetically for this so modern country is how i would describe it really the
14:40layout of the kitchen still works for them but it does need a facelift this is going to be
14:45one of the most challenging makeovers i've ever done what was your biggest spend with this i think the
14:53worktops so these were end of line they were on their way to landfill they came to 300 euro that's
14:59only a third year budget so the budget's not looking too well i think we might go over yeah
15:05kathy have you gone great because you're back in cork raining in kathy we need to spend this money
15:10on this kitchen to get it right i may allow this because you're back in cork yeah and you're feeling
15:16yourself nervous now kathy yes hello everybody how are we hello
15:29hello it is very bright kathy there's lots of pine a lot of pine pine everywhere this is the mood

15:39so the cabinet color is called earthenware and that is going to be all of the kitchen units so we're
15:45going to get rid of that pine straight away we have a herring borne vinyl floor that i secured end

15:51line thankfully it's a much whiter oak color than what's currently there i'll be very sad to see that go
16:00not not i really like the mood boards yeah i was quite surprised that we actually liked everything
16:05that was on we're going to paint most of the chairs in a sage green color and we're going to
16:11do the same
16:12with the table you're happy that the table's day yeah i think i underestimated how much you have to do
16:18in here yeah there's pretty much everything is changing in this room all hands on deck with this
16:23what size boot you brain um size 12. i just hope they know to get to that mood board level

16:32lot of work in between so i hope they're up for it open the van open the van open here

17:43weren't going to be painted or colored no i didn't i like i do like them but i hope they

17:48bright in the kitchen i don't think so they just need to trust my vision because i do think it's

18:20wow and there's so many colors as well fabulous job girls with those paintings complete it's time
18:28to think about a bigger paint job
18:32in buddavant work's about to begin and it's going to be a busy job for carpentry trevor
18:38so you're doing the floors you're taking out the kitchen yeah you're doing the work tops you're
18:43doing the tiles yes doing the sealants yeah you're painting the walls skirtens just a few small
18:49tops just a few small dolls this is the most adventurous job we've ever took you ready charlie
18:55aha yes he is look at this right charlie let's do this
19:06we've done loads of projects around the garden and everything like you put your hand to anything
19:11oh yes say goodbye to it with the units removed the painters take over say goodbye to the sauna guys
19:20outside the cabinets and table are being washed and sanded ready to be primed before the color goes on
19:26and onya has some friends helping out this huge project is going to need all the help it can get
19:31whatever they want to get us doing we'll do it so he's a carpenter but i'm here to bring the
19:36vibes
19:36yes excuse me i'll be bringing the vibes when i arrive you just stick to the sanding while inside
19:45there's just one question on trevor's mind you've done this before yes i've sat at a desk designing
19:52kitchens i haven't actually done it myself before i don't really think that we're going to get it
19:59done but i'm really looking forward to trying there's a ferocious amount of work to be done
20:04there's a month's work here in gwen's as the room turns pink julia is working on the table it's
20:12actually really really complicated to do to basically keep that piece of moving wood secure
20:18without pulling up or falling off i have to find a way of screwing it to the bottom of the
20:24table
20:25and then also to the inside of the cabinet without changing the distances between them
20:31and allowing it to move while julia concentrates on that tricky task it's time to see what gwen makes
20:37of the painted room whoa how do you feel it's very pink i mean my nieces are into barbie and
20:45i'm
20:46thinking they'd be kind of uh right at home here at the moment you know it was a little bit
20:50overwhelming
20:51to see all the pink on the wall i think it's a bit pink i don't think it's very pink
20:55it feels very pink to
20:57me i know it's a shock right now we have an empty pink room and we don't have lots of
21:05time to get to
21:06the finished room i know it's not everyone's cup of tea but i know when everything comes together
21:11it's going to work really well well peter we always want to be welcome for tea at gwen's so let's

21:19in buddavant as the tiles are removed the units are primed ready for the paint color speaking of
21:24which vibrant lovely nice yeah yeah no it is it is it's rich it's an earthy warm color and you

21:37it to be warm in there still i love the color on the unit i think it's very clean looking

21:44i'm excited to see them all together lately we don't have any of the sage green in there yet

22:01almost finished happily i will actually have his table done this afternoon it will be done number one
22:12and number one is making his own art for the gallery warden i think i know gwen well enough
22:17at this point to have a bit of fun with her so i thought i'd make a very bright graphic
22:21piece of art
22:22that and just shows her love of pink and what better backdrop to put it on
22:28than pink this is just going to forever remind gwen of how much she loves pink
22:36meanwhile in onya and dan's the old table and chairs are getting a revamp if you were to buy a
22:42solid wood table and chairs it could cost you 1200 euro and it's amazing to see like the wood is
22:47perfect
22:47underneath and it looks brand new inside the new countertop is being fitted the one on your thought
22:53may be too bright here we go exciting oh yeah i'm glad it's as bright as it is now well

23:00relief definitely it's a lot of work but the whole process so far has been so fun because everyone is
23:06just in such good spirits in great form and everyone's really nice this is yours so trevor did
23:13frighten the life out of me this morning saying we probably won't get the makeover actually finished

23:23the trick here though is to keep up the pace
23:29coming up the weather puts a dampener on kathy's makeover
23:34the outside storage didn't work great no and peter is feeling weary all of yesterday was just pink

24:41hey julia hey how are you doing good good gwen's previous pets are really important to her and i
24:46wanted to give them like a respectful home i've always loved animals i had a cat missy i got my
24:54dog lola
24:54so the house was full of life i lost missy first and then i lost lola the dog and the
25:04house felt
25:05very empty so uh yeah it was time to get another dog at that stage
25:17you're some messer so these are the little urn shelves basically we have a black urn and a white
25:23urn so i want the black urn sitting on white and i want the white urn sitting on black after
25:27that i have
25:27some bookcases i need going in under that alcove yeah i had planned like a bookcase scenario but i'm
25:32now thinking like a bookshelf well we've got loads of bits of leftover anyways and they've all been
25:36cut already so it's actually simple gwen's old bookshelves as well do you know how useful they
25:40are yeah all of this needs primed and painted so we will be kind of following behind you guys
25:44while julia up cycles the old bookshelves gwen's mom k has arrived to do her bit i would love a
25:50cushion
25:51made out of this fabric i wanted to have a bit more of a vintage look and i think that
25:55monochrome
25:56green might be really good if you can whip me something up okay is that okay
26:02in buddavant there's a very special visitor uncle justin who built the house and lived there
26:07what do you think uh i've heard it before
26:14yeah well you know i wasn't the biggest fan of the pine yeah and i loved it i still do

26:21i feel like justin hates change so i think getting him inside is a big big task is that
26:27where you get it from so maybe it has really brightened the place up hasn't it yeah it definitely
26:31has yeah even though i prefer pine to see the color outside the window oh god
26:39justin is going to love what's coming next these were all picked up in a flea market in france
26:48diabolical don't mince the words anyway we want to do a plate wall this plate wall now yeah it's
26:54going to divide the nation that sounds like a challenge off we go on our little adventure
27:03kathy has sent these two delft skeptics to a charity shop to find more plates for the wall
27:09that wouldn't really go on the wall would it no is that an ashtray can you see this looking decent
27:15in the press they're lovely we could leave kathy's ones inside there will you leave kathy's plates alone
27:23that's lovely that's one of the nicest plates i've seen in here that would bring good feng shui what what

27:30i love this one i think he's kind of cute do you i think it doesn't match any of the

27:40the point is this i yes we may agree to disagree in the city peter is about to give gwen

27:50class in upcycling we're going to repurpose some old rugs they've had a long life a black and a beige

27:56gwen will not let me forget two of them for 50 euro from marketplace we're gonna try and make them
28:00into one brand new rug with rugs with the mixed materials that they're made out of it's really
28:06hard to recycle them it's hard to like split those fabrics so what we're gonna do is repurpose these
28:11rugs because we can't send them off to be recycled we're gonna make a new rug out of this one
28:15so i
28:16wanted quite a graphic design for the room yeah but i couldn't find that second hand so we are going
28:22to make our own design and hopefully make a brand new rug they mark out the design on one of
28:28the
28:28rugs and cut it out all right so i think if we get the black one in underneath yeah we
28:36can have a look
28:36at how it's coming together in the countryside the table has been saved and trevor is fitting the sink
28:48oh it looks great oh fair play good job it's definitely better anyway yeah it's all about
28:55the teamwork we need extended family and neighbors and friends and we got them are you sloppy now with
29:00a paintbrush no no i'm not i'm ifa i live right next door to anja and then and i'm also

29:08cousin this was my childhood home i have loads of memories of that kitchen i've loads of memories of
29:13all the family being here especially at occasions i suppose dad now i'd say is sad the old roof being
29:18painted but it is nice to see it and it is time for a well needed up to while the
29:24units get another
29:25coat of paint kathy has a creative job for the little ones we have a fridge when you come in

29:31don't you we want to make some new magnets for the lovely new kitchen we're going to make them out

29:37clay so it'll just dry overnight how does that look yeah yeah that's really good we let these dry and
29:46then tomorrow morning we'll paint them ah that pine dresser from the van has reappeared oh yeah you love
29:53it do you i can tell by your face with emotion well obviously the elephant in the room is the

30:01but yeah assuming we're going to change that so we have a sage green paint that's the plan to paint
30:08all of this sage green i mean we can always take it out when you're gone so back in the
30:14city the
30:14homemade rug is complete so cool i was so nervous about doing that rug because i've never done anything
30:21like that and it actually turned out really good i think it's gonna look so great i think it looks

30:26already yeah and kay's cushions are also looking fabulous okay how are you getting on just done
30:32peter just done that's fabulous yeah it's grand that's quick yeah every piece of wood has to go
30:39through the priming team or as he's also known ronan gwen's brother
30:46i think they um they've picked out the um the person with the least talent and just said look get

30:52priming he'll that's the the less damage there i think you know ah ronan no gwen's friend maria is
30:59painting too while gwen adds color to the foldable table it's been nice to get some new colors into
31:04the room because like all of yesterday was just pink pink pink and i was kind of tired of hearing
31:09the word pink i think these colors are going to be great together i think so too in buddavant dan's

31:15to learn a new skill you're looking for a hand perfect timing how you done much toilet uh never
31:22never toilet no all right this is the simplest toilet you get up to because you're working off
31:27top of the the kitchen unit which is perfectly level so we're looking off this on his brother
31:33and wife they moved into host there recently but they ended up with uh five boxes too many
31:39i love them so many times yeah they're lovely oh my god are you a tyler
31:46what's the day am i oh they're fab good job dan and trevor while the day draws to a close
31:54at gwen's house the painting continues while some secret projects happen you broke my barbecue
32:03this will be painted primed all that and it won't look like a barbecue but it is the perfect size
32:09and shape for a planter for the wall to keep the plants up away from the lelsea and that's not
32:16the only surprise peter's planning we've just got the chandelier hung it's not fully pieced together
32:20but i don't want gwen to get any sense of what's going up here so i'm covering it with a
32:24bin bag and
32:25she's not going to see it until the final reveal i love surprises in onya and dan's the new floor

32:31about to be late you roll it in your hands yeah you start giving that a start to lie it
32:38down in a
32:38second now it's that line along the wall we want to get perfect i've never done this before back to
32:44you you're looking as if she's working right it is pretty amazing to look at how it looks this evening
32:51we have transformed a large kitchen but there's a lot left to do tomorrow it's it's going to be
32:58a bit chaotic in the morning coming up i make a flamboyant return cork i'm back and peter has an
33:09escape plan if things go south what's the plan if her reaction isn't positive just get in the car
33:15and start driving it's the final day of the makeover in buttovent and the team are doing the
33:25finishing touches i think we're nearly there i think we might do it it's been such a mammoth task
33:34but uh everybody's put together and the family has helped us so much as well and i think everybody's
33:39wrecked now well there will be a bit of respite for the family as kathy kicks them out you can't

34:23rathangian growing up in the 80s 90s we had this with like a little tea cup very fabulous very cute
34:28so we know awnya's not really a fan of the plates so sell it to me like a gallery wall
34:33it's the perfect
34:34solution for someone who doesn't have a lot of art in their house that is wondering what'll i put
34:40there and the beauty of this is that you can add to the collection at this point are you doubting
34:46that
34:46they'll love it i'm 50 50 at this stage the clock is ticking onion dan and the kids will be
34:52here soon
