A brutal heat wave has broken records across the Southwest day after day this week, and the heat's not done yet.
Transcript
00:00I want to take you into the southwest, just tremendous heat.
00:04So, again, we're kind of wrapping up, again, Pacific time, high temperatures still in progress for much of the time
00:12here.
00:12Some of you hovering near your record highs as we close in on the record highs for the afternoon, the
00:16afternoon daily highs.
00:17But take a look at these numbers to the right.
00:20You'll notice that for Palm Springs, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, and Flagstaff, each of those cities have a March record
00:26that was from 2026.
00:28For the past two or three days, amazingly, Flagstaff got up to 84 on Thursday.
00:33The previous March record was 76, and that was from the previous day.
00:38So, to smash a monthly record high by eight degrees, very impressive.
00:42And Palm Springs hit 107 yesterday, 105 in Phoenix.
00:46So, again, that not only would tie the record for April, but it broke the March record as well.
00:51So, really impressive stuff, Vegas March records.
00:54You'll notice the message here is that we're still really hot right now.
00:57Now, some of you are going to find the beginning of relief.
01:00For example, Palm Springs begins to hedge back down Saturday and Sunday.
01:04Still hot, but not like we've been.
01:06Phoenix, though, you've got a couple more days of this, and the previous March record was 100 degrees here.
01:11So, again, we're way up there, stringing together multiple days in a row, five days in a row, likely, of
01:18what would have been March records breaking.
01:21And we may do it again today.
01:22So, in Vegas, 96 would be the hottest March day in the books.
01:27Denver, almost as hot as yesterday, but we might actually spike on Saturday, breaking the record again before big relief
01:33on Sunday there.
01:34And in Flagstaff, just incredible heat, but not quite as warm as we were on Thursday.
01:38So, we're still very warm on Saturday.
01:41Record-challenging warmth across the region.
01:43And some daily records.
01:45These are the records specific to March 21st.
01:48We're going to break it by seven degrees in Phoenix.
01:50Vegas should break the record easily.
01:51Austin, Texas even breaking a record.
01:53Denver, smashing it by nine degrees.
01:55Sacramento, breaking a record by five.
01:57And Sunday, we've got more heat out there, especially in the deserts, less so along the immediate coastline.
02:03So, Sunday, here we are.
02:04Phoenix, 102.
02:05We've got to break the record by eight degrees.
02:07This is for the 22nd of March, and Tucson, smashing records.
02:11Dallas, Texas, up two degrees above the previous March 22nd record.
02:15Memphis, Tennessee even, you can see it expands east.
02:17Fresno, though, begins to cool down a little bit, still within a degree of the record from just 101 years
02:23ago.
02:23Let's go now into the southwest here, where this dust devil was caught on camera spinning up near vehicles in
02:31the Armagosa Valley Desert in Nevada.
02:34This is one of the things we've been talking about recently with all of the heat.
02:39Fire danger goes hand in hand, but usually when we're talking about an elevated fire danger, we're also talking about
02:44the risk of blowing dust.
02:46And sometimes you get just the right combination to end up with a dust devil like that.
02:51Pretty incredible video.
02:53I want to take things a little bit further than how far out Jeff went.
02:57We talked about the weekend.
02:58Now, overall, we're seeing warm but not as warm into the northwest.
03:02We'll be recovering from the heavy rainfall that you're seeing here for the last couple of days, most of this
03:07closest to the coast and along the west-facing slopes of the mountains.
03:10We've recorded seven, eight-plus inches in some areas.
03:15And this is what we're talking about when we say it's going to be warm but not as warm.
03:20I mean, take a look.
03:21L.A., you're down to 81.
03:22Back into the 60s in Salt Lake City, we take a look into Denver.
03:27That's probably the biggest drop, but hey, that's Denver for you, right?
03:30We go from the 80s and upper 80s at that to the 60s.
03:34So what happens next week?
03:36Well, here's the thing.
03:37We continue the trend with hot but not as hot.
03:41But then things continue to spread east.
03:44That high pressure restrengthens a little bit.
03:47And we have more records.
03:49Now, the worst of it is behind us or will be behind us once we get through the rest of
03:54our Friday.
03:55This has been the peak for a lot of us.
03:57But let me give you some more details here.
04:00Some more examples.
04:01We'll break it down.
04:02We're going to look at two locations here.
04:03So first, El Paso.
04:05We're in the 90s.
04:06We get back down to the 80s Monday.
04:08Back into the 90s, Tuesday and Wednesday.
04:10Tuesday, Wednesday is the time frame when we really see that heat rebuilding.
04:13But take a look at this.
04:14It only lasts a couple days, at least in El Paso.
04:17We go from the 90s to the 70s Friday.
04:20That's a big drop.
04:21Now, we're going to talk about Phoenix because this is the exception to the rule a little bit here.
04:26We are looking at triple digits for at least the next seven days.
04:32Yeah, 104 versus 100.
04:35Do you really feel much of a difference?
04:37It's that midsummer heat that, well, is sticking with us.
04:40Do you really feel much of a difference?
