00:31And welcome again, and on the big match today we feature a full-blooded London derby game
00:35and the battle that's going on at the top of the second division.
00:38So the main match today is Chelsea against Arsenal.
00:42And now it's Charlie George.
00:44Let anyone go, and Bonetti diving there as the ball's get it off the turf from Charlie George.
00:50And we also bring you the goals from Norwich, the surprise second division leaders, against Luton,
00:55and from the meeting of the other two pacemakers, Birmingham and Sunderland.
00:59Jimmy Hill supplying his usual analysis on the programme today.
01:03But now let's get on with the action, and down we go to Stamford Bridge
01:06for the big derby game between Chelsea and Arsenal.
01:09Chelsea, in fact, come to this game with one or two problems,
01:12although their form of late has been very, very good.
01:14But they come now without Peter Hausman in the number 11 shirt.
01:18He was injured earlier in the week, but the Chelsea squad is such a strong one now
01:22that they can almost afford to carry that sort of setback.
01:25So into the attack now comes Steve Kemba, the £170,000 man from Crystal Palace.
01:30And it's Kemba here who now has a chance to show what he can do
01:33against one of the most powerful combinations in the first division.
01:36This Arsenal side, they too have injuries.
01:38Peter Storey is not quite ready.
01:40Bob McNabb is having a run in the reserves.
01:42And Peter Simpson can make no more than the substitute squad.
01:45Even so, six of this side played for their countries last Wednesday.
01:49John Roberts, who played superbly for Wales.
01:51And the two full-backs, both for Northern Ireland.
01:54Here's Pat Rice and his partner in Belfast against the Russians was Sammy Nelson.
01:59And next we come to two Scottish internationals.
02:01Bob Wilson making his first appearance in goal for Scotland at Hamden Park.
02:05And with him in that side, George Graham against the Portuguese.
02:08Not forgetting, of course, we had John Radford
02:10who came on as substitute for England in Switzerland.
02:13The crowd, 52,000, waits for referee Keith Walker of Maikstone for the start.
02:19So Chelsea in an all-blue strip.
02:22Defending the goal to our left, get us away.
02:24Arsenal in their usual shirts of red with the white sleeves.
02:27Kelly now to George Armstrong.
02:32Arsenal not having won at Stamford Bridge in the last ten years.
02:36But with the comforting thought that they have a 3-0 victory behind them
02:39at Highbury on the opening day of this season.
02:41One that Chelsea most certainly will be looking to revenge today.
02:47Rice.
02:50Kennedy.
02:54And Hollands back to Bonetti.
02:57John Hollands has scored a magnificent goal, of course,
03:00in this corresponding match last season.
03:02George Graham.
03:03Charlie George.
03:04On nicely for George Graham.
03:05Attacking this Chelsea defence now.
03:07And Kennedy going in.
03:08And Bonetti was going the wrong way.
03:10Was slipping and had to recover.
03:18Cooke nicely played for Hinton.
03:23Now the game beginning to move with a bit of feeling and a bit of flair.
03:27Baldwin.
03:28The Cooke.
03:29The Cooke.
03:30The Cooke.
03:30The Cooke.
03:31The Cooke.
03:32And waited there for Hudson.
03:33Now he'll put a low-end run across that goal.
03:35Behind the two Chelsea strikers.
03:40Osgood and Baldwin were waiting in that six-yard area and it ran behind them.
03:48Bradford.
03:55George to Armstrong.
04:00Kennedy will go for this one.
04:01But he's got Webb to contend with.
04:03And now it's Charlie George.
04:05Let anyone go.
04:06And Bonetti diving there as the ball skidded off the turf from Charlie George.
04:16Now Osgood.
04:20Long sweeping ball towards Hudson.
04:24Boyle.
04:26Osgood's run into a bit of space.
04:32Kemba now.
04:34Across straight at Roberts.
04:37But Chelsea's throw.
04:44Baldwin's made the run for him.
04:47But McClintock had gone with Baldwin.
04:49Kennedy.
04:50Lovely skill.
04:51There was some shirt pulling there from Boyle.
04:54And Kennedy shrugged that off.
04:55And Webb.
04:57Bradford.
04:59Nelson.
05:01Graham.
05:03Armstrong now operating on the far side.
05:05Wanting the ball and getting it now from Rice.
05:09Charlie George.
05:11Arsenal.
05:12In spite of being the away side.
05:14Looking so full of confidence at the moment.
05:15George.
05:16Turning that in beautifully for Armstrong.
05:18What a run.
05:19And put behind for the corner by Harris.
05:27Bradford now coming back to take the sort of position that he won for this corner from George Armstrong.
05:33Magnificent run by the little winger.
05:35There's Roberts right up as well.
05:39And Burnetti.
05:40So sure as he's been for so long in the air.
05:44Hudson back to Burnetti again.
05:52Graham.
05:55Webb winning it in the air.
05:56But under such pressure from Kennedy.
05:57In fact it was a foul by Webb.
05:59And so it'll be Arsenal's free kick.
06:04David Webb.
06:08And it looks like it'll be John Roberts to take the free kick.
06:18Aimed again towards Radford.
06:20But a good piece of play there by Ron Harris.
06:22Getting in first and sending Charlie Cook away.
06:26Harris continuing his run forward.
06:30Hudson.
06:32Harris.
06:33Keeps going on.
06:34Then had it whipped off his toes by Rice.
06:38Armstrong.
06:40Bradford versus Webb.
06:44And Webb.
06:45A little lucky.
06:47A goal kick.
06:48That could have been very dangerous if Bradford had managed to control it.
07:02So Burnetti with the goal kick for Chelsea.
07:13Kayon says the referee.
07:16Straight into the referee from McClintock there.
07:18Calling for Kemba.
07:20But too tight for Kemba.
07:21Hollins went to his assistance.
07:23Webb now.
07:24Osgood.
07:26And again.
07:28Presumably trying to catch Arsenal a little bit square.
07:30Baldwin though was the only man up.
07:31And there's Kemba running onto that one.
07:33With bodies everywhere.
07:35And Cook operating down the left once more.
07:37Baldwin.
07:38Kick just wide.
07:47Well a good swift Chelsea move.
07:50In fact probably beginning when Frank McClintock aimed the ball at the referee and gave Chelsea possession.
08:03Kennedy versus Hinton.
08:05And a push in the back by Hinton on Kennedy.
08:15McClintock to take the free kick.
08:21Graham's gone for this one but he couldn't reach it in the air.
08:24Kelly.
08:27Still Kelly very tight again in there.
08:29So many Chelsea players are back.
08:31Only Baldwin in fact has stayed up.
08:32But there's a chance now for Kennedy and he scores.
08:35Arsenal go into the lead with 20 minutes gone.
08:39In spite of the fact that that penalty area was littered with Chelsea defenders.
08:44The ball falling loose to Ray Kennedy.
08:47And hammer that in left foot giving Vanetti no chance at all.
08:56So Ray Kennedy scores his seventh goal of the season.
09:00Now level with the John Radford also with seven.
09:03Arsenal ahead.
09:04With 20 minutes gone.
09:10Roberts.
09:11Cook.
09:18Cook looking to make a swift reply for Chelsea.
09:20And it's falling to Charlie George.
09:22And now it's Kennedy again.
09:25Sweat wide there for Radford.
09:27His ally in front.
09:29And Radford just keeping it in.
09:33Armstrong's gone in there but Webb to get it away.
09:35Rice now to put Chelsea under more pressure.
09:38Kelly.
09:39A little ding forward again but Rice couldn't get it.
09:41And Vanetti could.
09:46Charlie George.
09:50To number 10s.
09:52Kennedy and Campbell.
09:53And Kennedy coming out the winner.
09:55Kelly.
09:56McClintock.
09:57A swift look to his left and he sees it.
09:59Sammy Nelson is free on this side.
10:02George Graham.
10:03George Graham.
10:03Oh a nice little dummy and a first time shot.
10:06What a nice little bit of play there.
10:08He dummied and shot almost in one movement.
10:15Kelly.
10:18And Charlie George bursting on the scene.
10:20Hitting it first time.
10:21Benetti's back on his line very quickly.
10:34Kelly a long way back to Wilson.
10:36But Arsenal looking so organised.
10:50Hinton to Bonetti.
10:59John Boyle.
11:03Osgood winning it in the air and finding Hudson.
11:06Cook has gone down the ride and taken over from Hudson.
11:11Lovely piece of acceleration there by Cook.
11:14Hudson turned first time there.
11:17Ball winded on it back and over.
11:18And just took over by Wilson.
11:22Nice Chelsea move.
11:24With the inspiration of Charlie Cook at the heart of it.
11:32So Webb has gone up once more.
11:35To stand at the near post.
11:37Here comes the corner.
11:39Kennedy getting it away.
11:40Charlie George.
11:43Played a long way out to safety.
11:44But to Harris.
11:46Hollins.
11:48Chelsea beginning to shake themselves up now.
11:50Aim towards Osgood.
11:53But Osgood going in in fact with his elbow.
11:56He may have got an elbow as well in the face.
12:02Armstrong.
12:03Kennedy.
12:06George.
12:07And he played it really without noticing that Hudson was quite so close to him.
12:10A nice pick for the outside of the boot by Hudson.
12:12To Cook.
12:16And Hudson again taking up the running.
12:18What a good piece of play by Alan Hudson.
12:20Across the goal.
12:21And Kelly in terrible danger about putting that into his own net.
12:26But now safely with Bob Wilson again.
12:29And Hudson the real architect there.
12:37Graham.
12:37Getting a few boos in the crowd now.
12:42McClintock to Rice.
12:48Webb winning it in the air.
12:50Coming to grips with Ray Kennedy a lot more now is David Webb.
12:54After Kennedy looks so very dangerous in the first quarter of an hour or so.
12:58And indeed after 20 minutes when he's scored.
13:03Well the referee's given Chelsea a free kick there when they were nicely in possession and moving sweetly.
13:08And I would think Tommy Baldwin is probably saying why didn't you let us go on ref.
13:16David Webb going forward once more on the far side from where that ball is being placed now.
13:22For Hollins to take the free kick.
13:25Driving it beautifully as he does those free kicks.
13:27Got over everybody's head again.
13:29But it must have clicked on Arsenal head.
13:31Because it's gone over for the corner.
13:36Radford and now we should see some pressure on Arsenal faces at the near post is Sammy Nelson.
13:45Cook with a corner.
13:47And Kemba not quite hitting it as he would like to have done.
13:50But Hudson in possession for Chelsea.
13:53To Harris.
13:55Looking to make the right sort of angle.
13:56And Charlie George denying it.
13:59Roberts.
14:02And Chelsea's throw.
14:14Hudson with the throw for Chelsea.
14:17Kemba over his own head.
14:19And Webb.
14:19He's diving in there.
14:21And Wilson really forced to punch that one away.
14:24But it was an unfair challenge by Baldwin on him.
14:32So Bob Wilson pained but undefeated.
14:44And now to take the kick himself.
14:55Harris.
14:59Hollins back to Hinton.
15:06And Arsenal looking beautifully balanced and organised.
15:11And Chelsea as yet.
15:12Not having made a real opening for themselves.
15:15Hinton now.
15:17Roberts again winning it in the air.
15:18Very impressively indeed.
15:21George losing it out and it's Hudson for Harris.
15:25Certainly Harris has come forward urging his men on more and more.
15:29And Osgood.
15:29Baldwin.
15:30Can he turn on it?
15:31Osgood.
15:31Can he hit it?
15:32No he can't.
15:33And again he tries.
15:35And finally it's Rice to belt that one away.
15:38Boyle now for Chelsea.
15:40Aimed again towards Tommy Baldwin.
15:44Hudson.
15:45Chipped again.
15:47Hollins getting right in there.
15:48And Nelson to lift himself and nodded away.
15:52Hollins again.
15:54But now Armstrong.
15:55Hollins going in on me.
15:56But Armstrong.
15:58Poor Arsenal.
16:00Now Hinton.
16:03The first sustained pressure really that Chelsea have put on this Arsenal defence.
16:08Nelson.
16:13McClintock.
16:15To Wilson.
16:24Webb.
16:26And McClintock beating Bourbon in the air.
16:28Kemba now nodding it sideways for his skipper Harris.
16:31Hudson.
16:35Harris.
16:37Hudson again.
16:40Towards Osgood.
16:42Harris once more right in there.
16:44Harris will get a shot in.
16:46He tries a little dink.
16:48And it went off an Arsenal player for the corner.
16:52So Chelsea certainly saving their best work in this half for the five minutes or so before half time.
16:58There's Hudson's corner.
17:00A lower one.
17:00Webb trying to jump over it.
17:04And a goal kick.
17:08Skipper's inspiration at the moment needed to keep this Chelsea pressure at bay.
17:13Charlie George running by it and allowed it to come to Kennedy.
17:17And now for George Grail.
17:19Charlie George.
17:21But Kennedy beaten by the aggressive David Ware.
17:25But now it's Ballroom.
17:27Cook.
17:33Hollins.
17:34Played for Boyle.
17:36Again plenty of Chelsea men planted forward.
17:39And it's Hollins for the chance to cross it first time.
17:42And Wilson going for this one and catching it beautifully.
17:55Now Webb.
17:58Lifting it casually over the head of Kennedy.
18:00Boyle taking it well.
18:02And Hollins running on ahead once more.
18:04But it's behind him.
18:05Kelly.
18:08Nelson.
18:10Grail.
18:13Bradford.
18:13Versus Webb.
18:17And Webb I would have thought accidentally handling that one as he fell.
18:20But the free kick is given.
18:26So Armstrong to take it.
18:29Towards the near post.
18:30And Webb to hook it away.
18:32Boyle.
18:34And the whistle goes for half time.
18:38And a very skilful first half indeed.
18:40With Arsenal looking so well organised.
18:44So beautifully balanced.
18:46And just about deserving to go in at half time.
18:48Leading by one goal to nil.
18:49Scored by the number 10 Ray Kennedy.
18:51His seventh of the season.
18:52After 20 minutes.
18:54But the half time score here at Stamford Bridge.
18:57Is Chelsea nil.
18:58Arsenal one.
18:59And we'll be back with you in just a couple of minutes.
19:14Arsenal then get us away at the start of the second half.
19:17Two sides who really are in very good form at the moment.
19:21Arsenal who've won their last five games.
19:24And Chelsea who are unbeaten in their last five.
19:28Arsenal certainly in the first half looking to be in the better form.
19:31And putting a stronger emphasis on defence once they went ahead.
19:35And I think Chelsea will have to lift themselves a fair bit in this second half.
19:38In order to break them down.
19:39There's Radford though now.
19:41Baldwin who'll work and work and work until he does break somebody down.
19:44And got the better of that little tussle there with George Graham.
19:48Finding Hudson.
19:52Boyle down the right.
19:53Crossed first time.
19:55And Baldwin going in.
19:56And only just getting a...
19:57Failing to get a touch there by a fraction.
20:00Went past McClintock.
20:03But now it's McClintock for Arsenal.
20:07Kennedy.
20:08Armstrong.
20:12Kennedy.
20:15To Kelly.
20:17And a push by Kelly on Hollands as he went past him.
20:21By Kennedy.
20:26And Webb to take the free kick for Chelsea.
20:35Kelly getting there well.
20:37But it's Harris now for Chelsea.
20:38To Cook.
20:41If anyone can open up this Arsenal defence it looks to be Charlie Cook.
20:44And that squirmed off the knees of McClintock.
20:48The skidding ball.
20:49And it took McClintock by surprise.
20:56Hinton.
21:01Osgood.
21:02But that's Kelly to McClintock.
21:07Webb.
21:12Armstrong.
21:18Hudson's throw.
21:24And Boyle back to Bonetti.
21:32And Boyle back to Bonetti.
21:34Osgood.
21:35Just ducking himself down there to nod that towards Baldwin.
21:39Poor John Boyle slipping badly and giving Armstrong his opening.
21:43Webb's gone across to cover for Chelsea.
21:45He's gone past Webb.
21:47And he kept the ball in beautifully too.
21:50Alfred trying the overhead and didn't make contact.
21:54Kemba now to Osgood.
21:56Oh, laying that off nicely for Kennedy.
22:00And then running into Kennedy well after the ball had gone.
22:03But it's Graham now.
22:06Armstrong.
22:08Nelson.
22:10Arsenal, if anything, looking at it would be more adventurous in the first few minutes of this half.
22:14And they did at any time after they got into the lead after 20 minutes in the first half.
22:23The referee giving Sammy Nelson a little bit of a talking to there.
22:32Graham in before Hollins could react.
22:38Armstrong.
22:40Hinton.
22:47Hinton.
22:58And Kelly, for the moment, is going off the field.
23:02To get a little bit of treatment off the pitch there.
23:05From trainer Fred Street.
23:12So the game goes on.
23:13Arsenal, for the moment, down to 10 men.
23:15In goes Webb.
23:18And a booking there.
23:21Sammy Nelson.
23:23His name goes into the book.
23:25He had a warning.
23:26A matter of a minute or so before.
23:28And there was something unfair in his challenge on David Webb.
23:31Right in front of the referee.
23:32As Webb went through.
23:38And Keith Walker, the referee from Maidstone.
23:40Putting the name of Sammy Nelson in the book.
23:46A clean top.
23:47Charlie George.
23:50And I'm sure he'll never forget that back pass in the semi-final that led to a goal for Stoke
23:54at Sheffield Wednesday.
23:56But he's still doing them.
24:01Boyle.
24:03Hudson.
24:05Hollins.
24:07Cut out nicely, though, by Charlie George.
24:10A good bit of play there by the Arsenal No. 6.
24:11And he's a good pass there to Ray Kennedy.
24:16Graham.
24:19George.
24:21Armstrong.
24:26Armstrong.
24:26Graham.
24:27Kennedy.
24:28Armstrong still right in there.
24:30And there are plenty of Chelsea men back now.
24:39Cook.
24:45Kimber.
24:47And Harris.
24:50Baldwin.
24:52McClintock in quickly.
24:53Momentum carrying in through Baldwin.
24:55In fact, a nice Radford and Kennedy.
24:57The old firm.
24:58Armstrong.
25:00Kelly back on the field again.
25:06Charlie George.
25:07Kennedy playing a 1-2 there.
25:09George and Kelly both lining themselves up for it.
25:12And a kick there by Hinton.
25:14That might put him under pressure still.
25:17And finally Harris in there to nod it away.
25:19A really grotesque slice there by Hinton.
25:25And Ron Harris it was who finally hooked it behind for the corner.
25:33Wanting Cook, in fact.
25:34That's what he's shouting for.
25:35Cook to take up Rice.
25:36There's the corner.
25:37Graham doing it for it.
25:39And it must be credited to Graham.
25:40They went off Kennedy.
25:44So Graham, in fact.
25:46As Peter Benetti just constantly takes the ball out of the back of the net.
25:50The header and a powerful one by Graham.
25:53Ricocheting off Ray Kennedy.
25:56And giving Benetti no chance.
25:59So Arsenal 2 ahead.
26:05And I would think there'd be a fair bit of debate in the Arsenal dressing room as to who exactly
26:09should be credited with that one.
26:11Whether this man, George Graham, who made the powerful header.
26:14Or whether Kennedy.
26:15Or whether Kennedy.
26:18And whoever it is.
26:19It's Arsenal 2 into the lead.
26:27Osgood.
26:28Baldwin.
26:31And now for Harris.
26:33And now for Harris.
26:34For Brandy miscuing.
26:55Well, they are the Highbury boys.
27:00And now for Harris.
27:08Kemba.
27:11To Harris.
27:15Osgood.
27:19And Chelsea at the moment showing no signs of being able to find a way through this strong Arsenal defence.
27:29Collins now.
27:30Leaving the ball in fact for Harris to take this free kick.
27:33They've got plenty of men up this time.
27:34Chelsea Webb amongst them.
27:35Osgood too.
27:37And Hudson to hit one.
27:39But why?
27:52The red and white scarves are out now.
27:57The Union decks as well.
28:00And Hudson fighting there.
28:04Now it's Osgood.
28:06Not getting much change from George Graham.
28:08And taken from behind.
28:09And it must be a free kick.
28:11He wanted to take it quickly.
28:12But he certainly wasn't allowed to.
28:14And a quick shake of the hands there.
28:16I think they must have seen the referee coming their way.
28:20I thought that might be the best solution.
28:23But it's Chelsea's free kick.
28:24And again it's going to be Alan Hudson to take it.
28:26Or rather John Boyle.
28:30Simpson.
28:31Cook.
28:32A little dink back there again towards Webb.
28:34And Baldwin almost got it in.
28:36Baldwin again.
28:37No.
28:39There really was nothing in that.
28:40But it's a goal kick.
28:41Not even the corner that Chelsea wanted.
28:44And twice Baldwin went in there when the legs were flailing.
28:48To try and get in the shot that counted.
29:08Radford, Hollings, Charlie George, and a throw.
29:16To Arsenal.
29:20And Peter Bonetti wanting cover in that Chelsea defence.
29:31Radford taking the throw.
29:33George Graham showing a lot of skill there.
29:35Rice driving one that was only a foot wide.
29:38But the linesman in fact had his flag up on this side.
29:51And they must be very happy with the way the way the side is playing.
29:54Arsenal looking as though they might be on their way to a successive win.
30:00Baldwin again.
30:02Osgood.
30:05Osgood.
30:07Osgood.
30:26Osgood.
30:32So it'll be Armstrong to take it.
30:38With about two and a half minutes to go.
30:42Harris.
30:48Baldwin.
30:52Kemba.
30:53To Hudson.
30:58Cook.
31:00With a chance to bear in on that to goal there.
31:03But once more Rice and Simpson together acrobatically to get it away.
31:08And Chelsea's throwing.
31:14Webb.
31:19Harris.
31:20And Cook once more.
31:22A little flick there for Hudson.
31:23A nice little flick there again for Cook.
31:26Still Cook going on.
31:27Now can he make something of this?
31:28Osgood.
31:29And he scores!
31:30What a fine goal by Chelsea.
31:33With a minute and a half to go.
31:35Chelsea have pulled one back.
31:39Beautiful play by Cook in the first place.
31:42And Osgood with lovely control.
31:45And finally the shot into the roof of the net.
31:49Cook who was magnificent there.
31:55And Osgood.
31:57Who then proceeded to score his 14th goal of the season.
32:05Well, Arsenal a bit slow to get this one away.
32:09Maybe the pressure will be on them now for the next minute or two.
32:12It can't be too much injury time.
32:14And Rice to plant it back to Wilson.
32:21Hollins winning that one in the air.
32:22Hudson.
32:23Oh, picking it straight back at Kennedy though.
32:25Armstrong.
32:27Bradford.
32:28Trying to run his way through John Boyle.
32:30Hollins.
32:33Chelsea's throw.
32:34And they've got to do everything speedily now.
32:36The last half minute of the game.
32:44And something not quite right about that incident.
32:49It was a free kick in fact to Arsenal.
32:51What that was going for I can't say.
32:53But it's Roberts to take it.
32:55And Chelsea as yet after that goal.
32:57Not really had the opportunity to put more pressure on Arsenal.
33:00They won't now because the throw in fact is to Arsenal.
33:03And there's an Arsenal player down.
33:07Ray Kennedy.
33:11George Graham claiming that Boyle lifted his feet a little high.
33:16expecting the damage.
33:22And so it's going to be David Webb.
33:24Still right up there amongst the strikers.
33:27But Graham now for Arsenal.
33:28Chelsea!
33:38George Graham again.
33:39Wanting to take that ball down to the corner flag.
33:42And Chelsea have got to come and get it away.
33:46That really is a crazy situation.
33:48And it happens so often.
33:49And I think the referee very wisely has decided
33:53that's a free kick.
33:55Or has he?
33:56Maybe he's decided it's a corner.
34:03No, he's given a free kick.
34:05He must have given the free kick on that spot.
34:06And George Armstrong is saying,
34:08how can I take it with that flag so close?
34:13Kennedy jumping but missing it.
34:14And now Cook with a last surge effort for Chelsea.
34:18Rice chasing him.
34:20And the red shirts are really springing back now
34:22as Cook goes on once more.
34:24Flicked inside for Osgood.
34:26Can Chelsea do it yet?
34:28Now Harris.
34:29Everybody for Chelsea up.
34:31Cook.
34:32Lyce coming to meet him.
34:34Cook, can he do it again?
34:36Still Cook.
34:39Tempting and teasing.
34:40A drag back.
34:41Tries again.
34:42And now plays for Harris,
34:44who's got time to get this ball across.
34:45But not a good one by Harris.
34:48But not a good one by Harris.
34:48Hinton to follow it in.
34:49And not a good one by Hinton.
34:51Because now McClintock can lead the charge the other way.
34:55But not for long.
34:57Because the whistle has gone.
34:59And Arsenal have broken that 10-year bogey.
35:02Put under pressure right at the end.
35:04And McClintock has led them to victory.
35:06Kennedy has scored the first one.
35:08And had a go at the second one with the number 11,
35:10George Graham.
35:11And then just before the end,
35:12Peter Osgood of course.
35:14Scoring the one for Chelsea that gave the last few minutes of game
35:17more interest than we thought it could have had.
35:20So there we are.
35:21The final score in that little flurry at the end
35:23is Chelsea 1, Arsenal 2.
35:37So Arsenal in fact complete the double over Chelsea.
35:403-0 at Highbury on the opening day of the season.
35:422-1 yesterday.
35:43And still to come on the big match today,
35:44highlights of Norwich against Luton
35:46and Birmingham against Sunderland.
35:47Some great goals there.
35:48And a particularly fine one in that Birmingham game.
35:51I think probably one of the best I've seen this season.
35:53Now two headlines this morning rather caught my attention.
35:56And I thought caught the mood of yesterday at Stamford Bridge.
35:59And the people this morning.
36:00Who'll stop Arsenal?
36:02And the Sunday Express say,
36:04Now England must call up Kennedy.
36:06Two points there for Jimmy Hill.
36:08Well in fact a few weeks ago I did say
36:10that I thought Arsenal would play more attractive football this season.
36:12And they certainly served up plenty of that yesterday.
36:15It was a really fine performance.
36:16But on the other hand the cornerstone of their victory,
36:19without any doubt for me,
36:20was laid by their defence.
36:21A really perfect performance of defensive play.
36:25And more than that, when you think as Brian said earlier
36:27that they had Simpson as substitute
36:29and Story and McNabb, both defenders not in the team.
36:33Then it makes you wonder how much defence they really have in depth.
36:36But it was their attack really that took the eye yesterday.
36:40It wasn't as if Chelsea didn't have their share of the game.
36:43In fact they battered that Arsenal defence for long periods.
36:46And they flung up David Webb as a battering ram.
36:49But it wasn't really the kind of substitute they're looking for,
36:52for the performances of Ian Hutchinson.
36:54I think Chelsea fans don't need for me to tell them
36:56that there is no real substitute for the combination of
36:59Osgood and Hutchinson up front.
37:01They just seem to fit together, as do Radford and Kennedy.
37:04And it was Radford and Kennedy yesterday who led Arsenal's attacking power,
37:07but linked up from behind by Charlie George.
37:10One would have thought yesterday that Kennedy was the England player
37:13rather than Radford.
37:14Radford had a quiet game, but it was George,
37:17using his old head on his young shoulders,
37:20who nursed himself back after injury,
37:22but spread the play out, saved his legs
37:24and did some devastating things in the course of the game.
37:29Just watch now as he picks the ball up.
37:32The accuracy, there's the shot there and there's the power.
37:34Burnett is scrambling across the line there.
37:37And now the power of the through ball.
37:39Just the right weight for George Armstrong,
37:41running up the right wing, doesn't quite get his centre in.
37:43We've seen before how well George links with Kennedy,
37:47how well Kennedy finds space and how easily he picks him out.
37:50And then look at the length of that pass and the accuracy of it,
37:53from Kennedy to Radford.
37:55And again, the skill of Kennedy,
37:58which is emerging more and more each week.
38:01He plays to his favourite passing companion George there,
38:05who doesn't quite get the shot.
38:07But we see Charlie George, as I say, coming back after injury,
38:11but he used his head at times to save his legs.
38:14And finally, that football brain that is in this lad,
38:17there's the ball slotted through.
38:18Roberts it is there who does the dummy,
38:20which really made the goal in the middle.
38:22And Kennedy, with it on his favourite left foot,
38:24hammers it into the corner of the net.
38:26It really was a superb performance there.
38:28It's interesting to note the contribution of John Roberts up front as well.
38:32But can anybody stop Arsenal?
38:34Well, for me, I fancy they'll finish top of the London clubs in the league.
38:38Whether they can really go right to the top of the league is another matter.
38:41It was a superb performance yesterday.
38:43I wouldn't like to pick a team to beat them at the moment.
38:46Chelsea have their own few problems, and I think they know about them,
38:50and they've got a bit of sorting out to do yet.
38:52But just let's look now at Arsenal's second goal,
38:55and look at that contribution of this man, John Roberts,
38:57who I'll pick out as the defender of the match,
38:59who also found time to get up for corners,
39:02to make one goal, and to help his side at all points of the field.
39:06There's the corner. George Graham heads it.
39:08Kennedy, of course it is, who flicks it on.
39:10But you can see Roberts' enthusiasm there, up there in case he's needed.
39:16And of course, as George Graham said to me afterwards,
39:18when we said, would you claim that goal, George?
39:21He said, well, you know, I got into so much trouble after the cup final last year,
39:24that I think I'll leave that one for Ray Kennedy.
39:26Anyway, it was a happy day for Arsenal.
39:28Not such a happy one for Chelsea.
39:30But I must give them credit for fighting against the odds all the game,
39:34because they never really got their noses in front.
39:47Let's have some more action, and for that we now have a chance to see and to assess
39:50the amazing rise of Norwich City.
39:53Now leading the second division, of course, by three points.
39:55Well, yesterday, 22,000 turned out at Carrow Road to see them play Luton Town.
39:59Our cameras, or at least Anglia's cameras were there.
40:02The commentator, Gerry Harrison, Luton here in the white.
40:05And Luton in no hurry to deploy their forces up front.
40:11Anderson.
40:12But Livermore's boot in first.
40:15Good play by Anderson.
40:16Can he get it across to Hallam?
40:17Hallam lays it back to Mike Keane.
40:19Has an opening.
40:21That's it.
40:22And a great goal for Luton.
40:26A good one from Starr.
40:28And Keelan, well beaten.
40:36Beautifully set up by Mike Keane, number eight.
40:39The unselfish thing by Mike Keane there would have been to shoot himself.
40:43But choosing his moment absolutely right.
40:46Pushing it square to put Luton in the lead through Allen's lap.
40:56There's Forbes.
40:57Cross going into the middle for the long, deep cross.
41:00Ken Foggo coming in with a pass.
41:03Well, great goal.
41:04What a beautiful run.
41:07What a lovely run from Foggo.
41:11And Barber caught in two mines.
41:15But you've got to give the credit to number 11.
41:19And that long ball from Duncan Forbes.
41:22And suddenly, from nowhere, Norwich City square.
41:31Now, Patton with a long one.
41:33Up comes Duncan Forbes onto the near post or onto the edge of the goal area.
41:40Two men behind him, Ryan and Keane.
41:42Here's Forbes.
41:43Ryan not getting it away, but luckily, Shanks does.
41:49So, it's the young Shanks getting, there he is, getting Luton out of trouble there when the more experienced players
41:55almost let him down.
41:57Again the long one.
41:58Forbes coming to it.
41:59Forbes returning again.
42:00Oh, and it's a good shot.
42:02A good one.
42:04Great move again from this Forbes-Foggo duo.
42:11Kent Foggo with his second.
42:14And Duncan Forbes with that cross.
42:23Hallam and Butler pushing each other off there.
42:28And Cross getting it.
42:30Setting it up for Kent Foggo.
42:33Has he got a chance for a hat-trick here?
42:34Oh, it's a good chance.
42:35Here's a one-four.
42:44But a lot of the credit too, to number nine, David Cross.
42:51That ties up the result, that one from Trevor Howard.
42:55But don't forget David Cross, the man who got the ball away from Luton in the first place, set it
43:01up for Kent Foggo, and then on to Trevor Howard.
43:07There's Foggo, who's really been right involved in the second half.
43:10Up goes Cross.
43:13Oh, and a good header.
43:16What a good header from David Cross, when he was right under pressure there.
43:27So, well into injury time now, and Norwich City started this half looking a little bit down in the dumps.
43:36Same as the spectators who are well soaked by now.
43:38They finish it really on the up-and-up.
43:42Anderson.
43:44Howard punching it in.
43:45Sylvester.
43:46Sylvester turning well!
43:47What a goal!
43:48Oh, just past the post.
43:51My word, he turned well there.
43:53A touch of class and poise about that.
43:55And indeed, real quality there about that Norwich City shooting, quite easy to see why they are top of the
44:00second division at the moment.
44:01What a match it's going to be next Saturday, because next Saturday Norwich come down to the Den to play
44:05Millwall, who are second.
44:08Our last match today, we got some good goals.
44:10One really memorable goal, in fact, in the match that's coming up now between Birmingham City and Sutton.
44:14Played in not very happy conditions at St Andrews yesterday.
44:18ATV cameras were there.
44:19Commentators Hugh Johns.
44:21Birmingham are the team wearing the white shorts.
44:27Corner right side.
44:29Dennis Tewitt.
44:37Oh, what a good one!
44:39What a tremendous shot!
44:41Millie Kerr has scored up!
44:43What a fabulous goal that was!
44:471-0 Sunderland.
44:51Well taken.
44:52Corner came.
44:53A kick by Tewitt.
44:55And Bobby Kerr hitting a shot in a million.
44:58The sort of thing you dream about.
44:59Whack it on the volley.
45:01And goalkeeper Kelly had no chance.
45:10Malcolm Page, will he get there first?
45:12He does.
45:12Taylor on for another cross here.
45:16Delayed it a bit.
45:17It's a good one!
45:18A tremendous goal by Lechford.
45:221-1 the score there.
45:24And that's with the final.
45:25It's done it.
45:28And that's how it finished.
45:291-1.
45:29And that's how we finished today.
45:31Hope again that you've enjoyed the programme.
45:32We leave you today with a Chelsea goal,
45:34which I suppose proves that if you have the majesty of Cook
45:36and the chilling control of an Osgood,
45:38even two men can defy nine who are surrounding them in a six yard area.
45:43A little flick there for Hudson.
45:45A nice little flick there again for Cook.
45:47Still Cook going on.
45:48Now can he make something of this?
45:50Osgood!
45:51And he scores!
45:52What a fine goal by Chelsea!
45:55Here we go.
45:55Let's go!
45:57Let's go.
46:04Here you are.
46:04Go to the floor!
46:05Here you are!
46:05Woo!
46:05You're always?
46:21Here you are!
46:23That's the way we are in here!
