Seth and Sean assess how much the Texans' roster has improved since last season and discuss the fan who kept jeering Luka on Wednesday night needing to be banned from Toyota Center for making the Rockets' lives harder.
Transcript
00:00Are the Texans a better football team now?
00:03I think they're a better football team now than they were at the beginning of free agency.
00:07How much better are they?
00:08Like, how many positions do you feel like?
00:10We took a step back.
00:11If we took a step back and just looked at the depth chart,
00:15how many positions have they actually improved right now?
00:18Okay, and I'm glad you said that because we could also make an argument
00:21that they've gotten weaker at some positions now at this stage in free agency.
00:25Okay.
00:25But the positions that they've improved, I mean,
00:30it's easy to just point to basically the biggest additions.
00:33And I think that the thing I feel most solid about would be strong safety
00:40and running back because those guys are filling a void completely.
00:44You didn't have a real starting running back.
00:47I like Woody Marks a lot.
00:49And maybe if he'd been able to stay healthy in the second half of the season,
00:52I would have felt better about a smaller guy maybe transitioning into that role
00:57of full-time running back.
00:58I think that now, whether you want to call David Montgomery the starter
01:02or at the very least one of your two starting running backs that's going to be working in tandem,
01:06that's a lot better.
01:07At strong safety, you just didn't have anybody.
01:10You had a rotating cast of tryout guys.
01:13And I feel 100% better about that.
01:16Then I would go to offensive line.
01:18And the biggest – I just hesitate sometimes to think, oh, okay, well,
01:23because you've got a couple of veterans that you brought in,
01:26then you're definitively going to be better.
01:28The part that I have to caution myself is that you just swapped out Titus Howard for Baden Smith.
01:34Yep.
01:34And then you're bringing in Wyatt Teller.
01:36But he's an older guard who's had injury issues.
01:38I like him a lot.
01:40But if I'm being completely honest with myself and as objective as possible,
01:43it's not always a slam dunk that a 31-year-old who's probably going to be switching back to left
01:49guard
01:49is going to have an easy transition of that.
01:52But that's – I still feel pretty good about it.
01:54So that would be my third most definitively –
01:57I almost look at left guard the way you just framed strong safety and running back.
02:01Yeah.
02:01Oh, yeah.
02:01You know what I mean?
02:02Like it was such a mess last year that there's not really a starter there.
02:07And so Wyatt Teller is going to be a major step up over anything that you trotted out,
02:12including Titus Howard, if I'm being honest, at left guard the last year.
02:15You know what you just did there?
02:16What's that?
02:16You just won a debate before you even realized it was a debate.
02:20You're exactly right.
02:21You're 100% right.
02:22But using my own logic, you defeated me.
02:24I grabbed your gun.
02:26You duck-faced bastard.
02:28I duck-faced – I grabbed your gun, I duck-faced,
02:30and then I fired it right in the middle of your chest.
02:34Whenever I hear duck-faced, I think of when Elmer Fudd shot – was it Daffy Duck?
02:41No, it was Daffy Duck.
02:43Oh, no, no, no.
02:44No, it was Daffy Duck.
02:44Yeah, Donald Duck is the Disney one.
02:46It was Daffy Duck.
02:47Yeah, so he shot Donald Duck.
02:48And his bill went backwards.
02:49And his bill would spin around.
02:51You can't find that in the Disney catalog these days.
02:54Oh, I'll tell you what.
02:54You can't find –
02:55They're very sensitive about the –
02:56You can't flip the channels all day, kids.
02:57You ain't finding humor like that on the grid these days.
03:01Cartoons like that led to a rash of cartoon interspecies violence back in the day.
03:07Okay, you said something interesting.
03:08You said that there were areas you thought that the team may have not improved
03:14or got worse at this offseason.
03:15Well, you know, I think honestly at defensive end, there's still some holes to be filled.
03:23I think that –
03:24Behind the guys, yeah.
03:25Yeah, in terms of depth.
03:27Yeah, I didn't expect them to go out and find an improvement for Will Anderson or anything.
03:30But that's what I was really hoping for.
03:32That's what I gave him to ask in my free agency.
03:35You couldn't go out and trade Will Anderson for Max Crosby in his papier-mΓ’chΓ© knee?
03:40That's right.
03:41What the hell's wrong with you?
03:43No, but I think that, you know, those guys – Danico Autry wasn't as available,
03:48but I think he served a really good role.
03:51He was good when he got out there, man.
03:52Yeah, and just – why am I blanking on that?
03:56Derek Barnett?
03:58Derek Barnett.
03:59Yeah.
03:59I almost said Patricia Arquette.
04:00Derek Barnett.
04:03No, it's not so easy to replace those guys.
04:06Yeah.
04:06They're veteran, solid players that came up huge at times.
04:09I think – I like Logan Hall coming in,
04:12and I think he's going to play a lot more defensive tackle than defensive end,
04:15even though he's capable of both.
04:18So I like him, but you are losing Tim Settle as well,
04:21as well as Mario Edwards and Foley Fadikasi.
04:27So, like, the overall strength and depth of the defensive tackle position,
04:31I think that – because they'll play four or five guys.
04:35Over the course of a few weeks, you're going to – one of the five guys is going
04:38to be injured, so you're going to get at least, like,
04:40four or five different defensive tackles playing.
04:42I don't know if they're as strong, but I really do like Logan Hall.
04:46But in terms of overall depth and strength,
04:48I think the defensive line still has to get either guys like Solomon Bird to come
04:52along and Dylan Horton to come along and improve,
04:55and then also perhaps bolster still through free agency or in the draft.
04:59The draft, yeah, for sure.
05:01Do you think – I know they're different players, different style players,
05:04and I know the guy I'm about to name – I'm going to compare potentially Logan Hall
05:09to is strictly an interior guy.
05:10But do you think Logan Hall can have a Tim Settle type effect?
05:14Can he elevate his game to where we're like, wow, this is a guy they –
05:17they might lose him after this two-year deal.
05:20Like, they lost Settle this year.
05:21No, no, no, 100%.
05:22I think his upside might be higher.
05:23And I also think, though, too, he can serve the Danico Autry role, too,
05:27where Danico is that guy that sometimes when they wanted to load up and stop the run
05:31and you put five defensive linemen on the field, he can line up.
05:36I mean, what Logan Hall has been doing in large part the last few years has been lining up on
05:41–
05:41instead of what the Texans do where it's a whole lot of cocked-out wide,
05:44he'll line up head up on an offensive tackle or on a tight end
05:48and can be an asset in that regard.
05:50So he's kind of an in-between, can play defensive tackle,
05:54can play defensive end in certain situations better than some of the other guys.
05:58So, yeah, it's a combination of those two things.
06:01I think he's got more versatility than – he's got more versatility than either of those guys.
06:06Yeah.
06:06You know, Tim Settle looks like a big run stuffer,
06:10but he actually was pretty quick and could get upfield.
06:13Yep.
06:14Danico Autry was a defensive end who could come down and play inside at times.
06:18Yeah.
06:18Logan Hall's kind of in-between both those guys.
06:20All right.
06:20So we'll hear from Wyatt Teller in the next segment.
06:24Wyatt Teller was in the building.
06:26We'll hear actually from folks talking about that acquisition.
06:29People are pretty pumped up about that, the follow of the Texans.
06:33Rockets are back in action this weekend.
06:35We're just kind of jumping around here early in the show.
06:37They play Atlanta and Miami.
06:39Miami, at least, is a team, and both of them are kind of in that play-in.
06:43They're not tanking teams, but they're not playoff-caliber contender teams.
06:48You're getting both of them at home.
06:50I mean, win these games.
06:53You can hold Bam Adebayo to fewer than 70 points.
06:55Yes.
06:56That would be great.
06:57That would be great.
06:58Don't give up 70 to Bam Adebayo.
07:01We are on the lookout, Houston, for somebody that may have lost the second Laker game
07:05for the Rockets the other night.
07:06This was Richard Jefferson, who was doing the game on ESPN.
07:10Early in the game, if you recall, Luka Doncic got fouled on a three
07:13and missed all three free throws.
07:15You don't see that a lot.
07:16There's a lot of ball don't lie going on.
07:18Apparently, there was some dude in the crowd at Toyota Center
07:21that was just trash-talking and agitating Luka all night long
07:26on a night where Luka went on to score 40 points.
07:29This is Richard Jefferson recounting it.
07:32Look at Luka put on a shot.
07:33Oh, my God.
07:34What Luka was doing last night, bro?
07:36He was bowling.
07:38Bro, it was belt to ass.
07:40What did they say, belt?
07:41No.
07:41Some idiot.
07:42Some idiot.
07:43I promise you.
07:44Some idiot.
07:45Luka misses three free throws at the start of the game, right?
07:48Luka's, you know, OGs, they kind of get warmed up.
07:51When you average 30, your first three, four shots are just warm-up shots.
07:56They're not like you trying to make them.
07:57You're just like, let me see it.
07:59Let me feel how I'm feeling tonight.
08:01Some dude to the left of us, like, eight rows back.
08:05You guys called it out right away.
08:06Right away.
08:07Because I was like, Luka, like, when he hit the shot at the far end,
08:12he walked to half court and was looking at people like, what the hell?
08:15Then he gets the steal.
08:16Luka gets the steal, and it looks inside.
08:19He's like, yeah, mother, this is all y'all.
08:21And I'm like, he literally was looking at them as he's getting the steal.
08:25Hits the three.
08:26The whole game, he talked to whoever that was the whole game.
08:32We need to find this man, and we need to ban this man from Toyota Center.
08:36You know what his response is going to be?
08:37What do you think?
08:38I'm scared.
08:39And this is the problem.
08:40The guy in the crowd.
08:41Yeah, this is the problem.
08:42This is the problem.
08:43It's true.
08:43Like, what am I, scared of Luka?
08:44This is the problem.
08:45You're not the one fighting the battle.
08:46That's right.
08:47When you decide to really zero in on a great player,
08:53let's call him, because that guy probably doesn't think Luka's a great player,
08:56a top-tier player in the NBA.
08:58He'd be wrong.
08:58The vast majority of times, it can only go in a bad direction for you.
09:04Yep.
09:04Two things will happen.
09:06Either the guy is unaffected by it,
09:07or he just uses that as his fuel for that evening.
09:11Yeah.
09:12And he goes off because of it.
09:13So you think you're helping your own team out.
09:16Listen, I don't care how good a trash talker you are,
09:18you're not going to get into that guy's head.
09:21These guys live their entire lives here in a level of trash talk that we can only guess at.
09:27It's just not, you're not going to do it.
09:29You're only hurting your own team.
09:31You're hurting the own player, your own, the players that you would claim to support and love,
09:36you're actually damaging.
09:38You're an abusive fan.
09:39Show yourself.
09:40You're an abusive fan.
09:41That's what your problem is.
09:43If you were at the game the other night, you know who this guy is.
09:45He needs to be ratted out and banned from Toyota Center.
09:47He lost the game the other night.
09:49It was that, that play, and we're up against it.
09:51The play that, that Jefferson was talking about there, where Lucas stole the ball and was looked,
09:56that showed up on social media yesterday.
09:58Lucas steals the ball and is dribbling to the other end.
10:00And isn't even looking at the other basket.
10:02He's looking in the crowd while dribbling, yelling at that guy.
10:05It was pretty awesome.
10:06It's pretty awesome.
10:07– There's two things.乾杯.
