A hippo made a dramatic escape after being targeted by a pride of lions in a rare and intense encounter
Wildlife photographer Nick Kaleku, 35, captured the moment in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. as the Rongai pride closed in on the animal.
The footage shows the hippo under heavy pressure, with the lions appearing close to overpowering it in a tense standoff.
But in a sudden twist, the hippo breaks free and escapes, leaving those watching in disbelief.
Encounters like this are highly unusual, especially with such an outcome.
Those who witnessed it were left amazed.
Nick said: “At the time, I was honestly in shock and couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. I kept thinking about how powerful and resilient the hippo was, and how quickly the situation changed.
“This is not something you see often at all… a successful escape like this is quite rare.
“There was a lot of excitement and disbelief, with people talking about how incredible it was to see the hippo survive and get away.
It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and really highlights the unpredictability of nature and the raw power of wildlife.”
