00:33:08the ACT UP movement took those symbols that were used against us
00:33:11and turned that into a symbol of queer resistance.
00:33:15I just wanted to, like, do a little bit of a twist on pink, really.
00:33:18The ACT UP movement did so many kind of crazy-out-there stunts
00:33:21and made use of spectacle and gags in order to draw attention to social issues.
00:33:26And they acted all over the world.
00:33:28In Manchester they would shoot condoms over the wall of Strange Ways Prison.
00:33:34So it was these stunts that drew attention to HIV as an issue for everybody.
00:33:40Because at the time people were just regarding it as something that gay men had to deal with.
00:33:45The inaction of people in power to do anything.
00:33:48It's essentially the willful genocide of queer people.
00:33:51Absolutely.
00:33:51That's what it was.
00:33:52The governments at the time were quite happy to just let people die.
00:33:58You had people who were locked in wards, who died alone.
00:34:02You had people who were denied basic medical care.
00:34:05I know so many people through drag and in the community who are in their 50s.
00:34:11And I'm like, why don't you have friends of your own age?
00:34:13Like, why do you hang out with all the young people?
00:34:14And they're like, everyone I know died.
00:34:17And if we had been born slightly earlier, we would probably be dead too.
00:34:24There are plenty of people who do not live anymore.
00:34:27Because people weren't willing to talk openly about it.
00:34:31I think our generation is very privileged.
00:34:34Because I grew up in an era where it seemed to be something of the past.
00:34:38I was born into the era of HIV and AIDS, right?
00:34:43So I was born in the 80s, just as the virus was really taking hold among gay men.
00:34:49And the fear around HIV and homophobia became intertwined to such an extreme level.
00:34:56I grew up watching adverts on the television of gravestones dropping.
00:35:01I live with that legacy.
00:35:03The idea that sex for me was linked to contagion and death.
00:35:08Yeah.
00:35:09As something that's always remained with me.
00:35:12I'm only 29, but that's how I felt.
00:35:15I felt like I could never find love and I was going to die alone in pain.
00:35:18What's always interesting for me now is when people talk about it being an issue with the past.
00:35:22I know.
00:35:23Because obviously, yes, the situation is so much better.
00:35:25But the stigma is still there, for sure.

00:35:28When it comes to life, dating, people's ignorant attitudes, still people don't really understand
00:35:34how HIV is contracted.
00:35:36PrEP.
00:35:37When I started PrEP, the feeling of realising that my sex life was not a death sentence,
00:35:42it had a profound psychological impact on me.
00:35:46PrEP is a drug that you can take which massively reduces your chances of contracting HIV.
00:35:52We have the opportunity to end HIV for good.
00:35:56But we need to keep pushing in order to do that.
00:35:58Yeah.
00:35:59A HIV-positive, undetectable person cannot transmit the virus.
00:36:06When you are undetectable, you are untransmissible.
00:36:11We genuinely can eradicate HIV, and with it, the stigma associated with being positive.
