00:01there's a debate going around online and we thought we're perfectly qualified to weigh in
00:05the hierarchy of detroit sports teams
00:10i took a stab at it i put the lions number one football's king i put the tigers number two
00:16wings number three and pistons number four someone's got to be last pistons fans got
00:21very mad at me very oakland county take like someone on text said it's white privilege that
00:26i've ranked the teams this way we don't need to get into that oh wow um i could i mean
00:31from downtown
00:33this has become like the city center versus the suburbs i could understand
00:40the argument for those that are are living downtown between the pistons and the wings
00:45i don't think there's really any debate about one and two yet you'll have it's so funny the wings are
00:52probably the most polarizing because some people argue they should be as high as two because
00:56hockey town and they bought themselves a ton of goodwill with the streak in 25 straight years and
01:00the cups like they've delivered the most championships yeah but at the same time some
01:06people think they're fourth like hockey is still niche to some people it's just not on their radar
01:09the nba is more popular than the nhl right and that's why i could make the argument now it's it's
01:15it's more popular than the nhl coast to coast yeah but i don't necessarily know that it's more popular
01:26in the city of detroit right
01:31or metro detroit well apparently it's two different things i think there's a healthy debate between the
01:37pistons and wings right now currently currently you're saying and for the younger generation like
01:42i think we're getting a lot of older people responding here and stuff and they they know the
01:45glory years and all that the wings have been bad for so long you know that i don't think there's
01:52a
01:52ton of interest from the younger people and i also think the other thing is connecting to a player
01:58like jim put yourself put yourself as an eight-year-old like you were your wheelhouse when you were
02:03in the 2000s with the the championships and stuff yeah like who would be that guy on on the current
02:10on this team it's much easier for a young a young individual to connect to kade oh yeah even jalen
02:19during beef stew beef stew stew some of this is in the nba you can see their faces there's fewer
02:25players the nba markets their stars much better than the nhl does yeah i think if you're a younger
02:31fan you can attach to kade more than larkin or cider well the nba does a better job of marketing
02:37their stars than major league baseball does that's a good point too but i i think part of this
02:41discussion is okay when the wings are winning that place is incredible because hockey town the the
02:48earned like passion and love when they're bad though i would argue people pay more attention to
02:53the wings when they're bad than when the pistons are bad like at their low point who's got a higher
02:58interest level yeah the pistons vanish from the city completely when they're bad oh i agree with that
03:04i i'm just making the point with the red wings they don't have the roster that people really
03:08gravitate to sure i agree with that i wouldn't fight that point two four eight five three nine
03:1497 97 guys lions one tigers two pistons three red wings four but those are interchangeable
03:21three and four depending on performance and sure yeah i'm sorry but for every major sports city
03:28the hockey team will be last it doesn't matter it's the same in every city dcfc fan here why are
03:35we
03:35excluded from the list you're really asking that question they get very rabid and very angry if you
03:50if you disrespect them but if i put them fifth they're on the list but are they disrespected then
03:54hey pistons aren't last uh tigers lions pistons red wings that sid in ann arbor he puts the tigers
03:59one rankings will change when the motor city golf club from the golf league starts in 2027
04:05that signed brendan shabath every four years
04:11every four years the curling team uh really takes a jump too let's get to calvin in detroit calvin good
04:16morning hey how you doing what's up good morning all right we can end this man it's real simple if
04:23i went to high school in detroit went to a couple of middle school elementary school
04:29if you're from detroit the lions are number one but pistons are number two if you live in the heart
04:35of detroit i don't care it's a culture thing so when that's when you start debating on that we love
04:41the wings but it's a culture thing if you don't live in detroit you live outside the city
04:46you kind of go with the tigers the wings sometimes the lions and then the pistons but if you're in
04:56the
04:56heart of detroit seven miles six miles finco puritan east side west side you will lions and pistons
05:03first then the tigers then the wings and that's how it is i think the lions are number one suburbs
05:09or in
05:10the city yeah yeah and i could see your point about where the pistons are um from your perspective
05:16yep and you and in middle school we wore piston starter jackets you know we we we wore more
05:23piston uh paraphernalia than we did the lions almost you know pistons were part of isaiah thomas is the
05:30icon in the city well and it's a good point like the bad boy as much as i brought up
05:35like 84 tigers
05:36and how that like won over a generation of people the bad boys did the same thing too yeah
05:41oh yeah and and for those of us who did not follow hockey or did not know about it you
05:48know sergey
05:48fedorov steve iserman you know uh all that you know we that got me to watching yeah uh the other
05:55cats in hockey adam oaks and all those guys so wings got us to start watching hockey you know so
06:02they became a sweetheart in the black community also so if you're living in detroit
06:10of course the lions are number one yeah barry sanders billy sims and etc but then the pistons
06:16always going to be like number two in detroit outside detroit i can see the argument appreciate
06:23it calvin read some text want to take some calls we'll do heather's news later in the hour let's
06:29get to brad you're on 97 one hey good morning guys good morning good morning hey it's all about
06:36the apparel especially the hats you know you can see everybody around town when you go out you know
06:42meyers out to eat or whatever they got the lions apparel and uh then it goes to tigers you can
06:49start
06:49to see the spring now a lot of the tiger hats coming out and then red wing hats uh and
06:55then the
06:55pistons hat i had to actually get my piston hat out which i haven't had out in a while
07:00so i i think i felt like at least zooming out beyond just the city center that the pistons had
07:06been dormant prior to this run that they've gone on you know they have a bringing jb cade comes into
07:11his own their defense is something everybody connects with like they've that fan base woke up in a big
07:17way yeah and if we're just talking about apparel i mean i guess i would probably have to say just
07:22from
07:22a personal perspective i would have more pistons apparel in fact i'm not even sure i have anything that
07:28says red wings on it i think i had a hat at one point yeah for red wings you're probably
07:35doing a
07:35jersey but unless you're wearing a sweater or you could get like a hoodie or one of those sweatshirts
07:40but unless i'm going to a game yeah you're probably not wearing it out and about tiger hats are probably
07:44the most common apparel that anybody wears yes i wouldn't put tigers ahead of lions but if you're
07:49going on apparel i think i see more just casually yeah the old english d than anything else
07:56let's go to neil and troy you're on 97 one neil good morning morning how you doing good
08:01so i just wanted to touch base i fully agree with you on the rankings i i grew up in
08:09the 90s
08:09you know i think somebody argued all the 90s you were kind of spoiled with revenue playoff hockey
08:15and that's true and i'm diehard runners fan they're my number one but growing up in the
08:21joey harrington and scott mitchell era charlie back walks them go in 16 and still watching
08:27how diehard everybody is now it's it'd be crazy not to think the lions are number one
08:32right and then you go you agree you put tigers two wings three pistons four
08:37yeah absolutely i mean you know baseball is america's pastime i think it'd be crazy
08:42and then again as a red wings fan you know diehard it kind of dies down in the offseason whereas
08:49you know the lions or you know baseball's got spring training and everything yeah you know i
08:54think everybody including myself watches that well think about it like this like we talk about what
09:00we think most people want to hear and we base it on the engagement we get and the calls we
09:04get and
09:05i would tell you we talk football 365 every show on this station talks football 365 the next most
09:12commonly brought up team is probably the tigers yeah and and i think baseball did and not everybody
09:19loved it but i think a vast majority of people and especially younger fans bought into it more
09:24with the pitch clock yes and the the games that that don't take three and a half hours but hey
09:29it's
09:30215 it's 230 like you get a game in and that amount of time i think that that was a
09:34great move by
09:35major league baseball just in terms of selling their product to the younger generation and the shift
09:40bigger bases more action less you know swing for the fences and strikeouts and three-hour games yeah
09:45i think they've done themselves some favors that way let's go to um nick you're next up you're 971
09:52hey guys how you doing good hey i agree with the ranking completely i hear the argument on the
09:59pistons being you know higher on the list in the inner city i think personally when you look at the
10:05state of the nba currently coupled with how much success michigan and michigan state have had in
10:10college basketball and in my opinion college basketball currently being a better product i
10:15don't see a way that the pistons are ahead of anybody um in this situation um that's just my
10:22take i think college basketball is a much better product you know the success that michigan has had
10:26in the last 15 years michigan state being in the tournament 28 years in a row now i think people
10:32kind of naturally drift more towards college basketball than the nba these days
10:36um so that's my point just wanted to bring that up and mention that yeah and and i mean we're
10:42talking
10:42about what the majority of people i'm not going to crucify you if you have your own personal fandom
10:50and it completely ranks somewhere different john my personal ranking would be different
10:54the wings would be my number one team yeah when i grew up they were winning they were fun
11:00they they had the star power you know what the tigers were like when i was growing up
11:05they're terrible you know what the lions were like post barry as i'm you know like a 10 year old
11:10kid
11:11watching the millen era i mean the wings are my number one team yeah but i wouldn't put them one
11:17or two if i'm ranking across the state and some people would put them dead last again it's a sure
11:22three and four is kind of maybe just cultural 248 539 97 97 emiliano you're next up you're on 97
11:301
11:31hey how's it going good good yeah so i think um i think you guys hit the nail on the
11:37head in regards
11:37to like it's a generational thing kind of like when you grew up i think out disputably it's lines
11:43at one i think two and three you can interchange uh red wings and the pistons depending on how they're
11:48doing uh cost that to your point i think um i think the red wings have a higher floor but
11:54i think
11:54the pistons have a higher ceiling and then the tigers at fourth uh the reason why i say that
11:58recently with um the mariner series game four it looked pretty light in the stadium over there
12:04it's a day game what's up it's a day game i know what you're saying it's the it's the playoff
12:11it was
12:11happening in a lot of cities too i mean i there's also a weird energy last year with the tigers
12:17at
12:17the end of the season because they blew the 15 and a half game it was a very weird atmosphere
12:21at
12:21the ballpark for those playoff games yeah that's fair enough and then also to my point on the pistons
12:26i think people forget how hot of a ticket that was from 2003 to like 2009 the sellout streak
12:32yeah the sellout streak yeah you have the actual lore of the you know going to work pistons so i
12:38think that's a lot of it i think anybody i think somebody mentioned pre-1990 of like okay tigers are
12:43the talk of the town obviously but i think after that i think people are dismissing when the pistons
12:48are good they like everybody's played basketball in their driveway growing up sure everyone's the
12:53that's a great that's a really good point hockey in terms of it you want to play ice hockey barrier
12:58to entry it's expensive everybody's got a hoop on the garage or their neighbor had one and you could
13:02go out and pretend you're ben wallace or chauncey billups mr big shot if you're the younger generation
13:06or you can be isaiah if you're on the other end of the spectrum there 248-539-9797 all right
13:13we are
13:13going to try to find cinderella cinderella may be dead we didn't have one last year we'll talk about it
13:17next mixing a little red wing hockey heather's news and some more bracket talk later it's 97-1
13:22one
