00:26I'm Maciej Strzokowski
00:28I do the art on the project which is all the modeling, animation, texturing, I do all the UI design
00:36I'm Sean Wright and I do all of the code and system building of the games so all the stuff
00:42you don't see behind the scenes
00:44We're brothers, that's it, Maciej is 7 years older than me, I'm 13, he's 20
00:55To begin with it was more like a little passion project, Maciej had done a bit of work with Unity
00:59before
01:00We got together and we decided that we wanted to try to figure out how to make a game
01:05Actually Sean was on a farm picking strawberries or something in France
01:10Farming vegetables
01:11He was a farmer so I think he was kind of having a little bit of tech starvation
01:15So he kind of called me up and he's like I need to do something
01:18Yeah, Maciej took a couple of weeks off work and I was like on holiday, broke looking for a job
01:24Yeah, you're still a farmer basically
01:26Yeah, sleeping on a couch at good times
01:29Yeah
01:34It was something that we both worked kind of on the fringes of in our various fields and kind of
01:40touched on it
01:41So Sean did app development with his gamification and this kind of stuff
01:45So I built like sort of internet style social game things
01:52But none of them were actual real games where we could, you know, things could blow up
01:56And you know, you didn't care about, you know, whether or not this worked in this business environment or whatever
02:03I think like for me I just wanted to go in and blow things up, you know, which I hadn't
02:07done before
02:08Yeah
02:08So that was like one of the main things, just blowing things up
02:15So in our game you're a character
02:19Who has the ability to just blend in with all these crowds of people that are walking around
02:24The aim of the game is to progress through the storyline
02:28Which we've just finished writing pretty much
02:31The synopsis of
02:33But you're essentially an assassin
02:34So what you do is you collect jobs and you finish them and you get money
02:40And with that money you get more weapons
02:42So yeah, I'm just gonna start a quick very simple missions
02:46Like yeah, we've got to kill this dude
02:48He's giving a speech
02:50He's in the synthetic meat industry
02:53And he's up there denying rumors about wrath meat in his products
03:01Because I'm very good at writing stories
03:03So that's the story I wrote for him
03:04So I'm just gonna snipe that guy
03:06Now the next objective is to escape
03:09So I'm just running, these guys are shooting at me
03:11It's like bullet hell
03:12And I died
03:14It really only took a few prototypes before we kind of found a workable game
03:21There was a lot of broken things that we made
03:23Yeah, some dark moments where we thought that it was never gonna work again
03:26Like
03:27Yeah, game dead
03:28No chance
03:29Yeah
03:33In the family home we had
03:36You know, the early Amigas and stuff
03:38You know, Sean's much younger
03:40So we just, we'd play side by side
03:43My first like
03:45Memories of playing games was probably
03:48What was that? Rainbow Road game?
03:50Rainbow Islands
03:51Rainbow Islands
03:52Yeah
03:53We've seen all these great mechanics and the way they work
03:55And we're taking bits of them here and there
03:58I guess like some specific titles
04:00We've got like Assassin's Creed mechanics
04:03Got worms
04:04And cannon fodder
04:06There's elements of Syndicate in there
04:08And then obviously kind of like just Grand Theft Auto
04:11It's a great cornerstone
04:18This has been my life
04:20This has been in this world
04:23If you can call it a name
04:24Yeah
04:27This alternate reality where I've just been modeling this kind of the full open world
04:32And it gets pretty mental
04:33One of my favorite things to do is isolate myself in this building particularly when I'm working on it
04:41I kind of lose all sense of perspective
04:44Because I don't know what's up and what's down and what's in and what's out
04:51But it's yeah, it's a kind of
04:53One of the things I've been trying to do with this particular project was that
04:58I don't want to have any copy paste stuff in the world
05:02So I want every single building to be
05:07Sort of a custom design
05:10And custom built for purpose
05:11So if it's like a little gameplay idea
05:14Or
05:16You know we have our general gameplay mechanics
05:18But we want to do something new with them
05:21So each building I wanted to build from the ground up
05:23As opposed to copy paste it
05:25Which is not a good idea when you're an indie team
05:29What you need to do is build one building
05:31And copy paste it over, you know, thousands square miles and be done with it
05:35And I'm personally not interested in that
05:40So yeah, I mean that's what I've been doing now
05:43It's, you know, it's mental
05:46It's a lot of work
05:47But you know in terms of other stuff I also do all the animation
05:50So I've been using, my workflow is through Seromax using a biped animation
05:57Into a Mekanon
05:58Which is a state-based animation linking
06:06Sean and Maciek are a bit unusual in the world of game development
06:09They're very much kind of know what they want
06:12And like talking to them, communicating with them was so fun and easy when we met them
06:17So we thought they'd be good people to work with
06:19A lot of this process comes down to whether you can really talk to someone and work with them
06:23And we really felt that we could with them
06:26Yeah, we had a huge amount of synergy with them right from the beginning
06:28Which is so important
06:29I mean, we're going to be working with these guys
06:31We're going to be telling them some stuff they don't want to hear
06:33They're occasionally going to be telling us some stuff that we don't want to hear
06:36And if we don't get on well, that's just going to be a lot harder
06:39So that was certainly another crucial part of choosing it
06:46Ian's got a great history of working out like coding systems and stuff
06:50And being able to draw and that's fantastic
06:52And like Paul's like an incredible
06:55He's got a great mind for publicity and stuff
06:57And he just handles that whole side for us essentially
07:00And they're just like really great people to work with
07:03And they've got so much expertise that we can feed off
07:05It's like a perfect match for us
07:07I mean like they're not like these big corporate overlord figures
07:11That we have to worry about pleasing all the time
07:14I mean while we do make sure that we try and show them like the cream of our progress
07:18Then it's not like I don't worry about going to meet them later today
07:22You know like I'm looking forward to it
07:24It's like going to be cool
07:25I'm looking forward to showing them stuff
07:26And I know they're going to appreciate it
07:29I think this game could be really huge
07:32I'm not just saying that from a kind of hyping up the game publisher perspective
07:36Just the reaction we've had to it when we take it to shows
07:38You know we've seen players of all ages
07:40All different types of people get really involved with it
07:42We took it to PAX East in the US
07:43And had a really big reaction from the public and the press as well
07:46We've got a live one here
07:49There are only a few games that can really grab people's attention
07:52The way Tokyo 42 does
07:53Yeah it's kind of a don't screw it up situation
07:55Which is interesting for our first title as a publisher
07:58So let's hope we manage that
08:22Welcome to this perfectly natural meeting environment
08:25So yeah single player stuff
08:27Yeah so basically I just wanted to show some of the progression stuff that we've been working on
08:31I kind of explained it to you a little bit
08:34Like when I started splitting away the main story missions from side missions
08:38Yeah
08:39So I'm taking it a little bit further
08:41We've had this concept of juice
08:43I'm now skinless but you'll see my juices running down
08:45So now they won't mind until I become that goes down
08:51But you can go walk on these little charge pads
08:53Which I did the design of so they're terrible
08:58But you'll see so in these parts where you're like kind of totally invisible to their eye
09:03You have to be wary of your juice running out
09:05Because as soon as it does you're going to be
09:08So it's like a stealth suit?
09:09It's a stealth suit essentially
09:10But it uses up your power
09:13So here we've just got to pick up now this backpack
09:15It's an invisible backpack they love it
09:18So you've got to go from pad to pad
09:20Yeah and this isn't the right area to kind of use it to its full advantage
09:24But basically we'll have it in places where you know it's timed
09:28So it's going to be like quite tense to get from spawn pad
09:31I mean charge pad to charge pad
09:33What this mission is is just a clearing and killing all these people
09:36And the reason I'm doing that is because there's a shop owner who wants to land there
09:41But these people are trying to camp
09:43They're like camping her out and basically waiting
09:46So once we kill them she'll be able to deal her weapons
09:50And then you'll be able to benefit from that
09:53Okay so we've got a couple new grenades essentially
09:55So we put in bananas but you'll see it doesn't do anything
09:59It's just the bananas
10:03But you can throw it, it has no effect
10:05They bounce though
10:09They're literally just bouncy bananas
10:12And then we've got the bunch of bananas which unsurprisingly
10:16We're probably going to make people slip up on them or something
10:18Yeah this is just a bunch of bananas again
10:22It's pretty fun
10:22That looks nice
10:23We've got a sticky grenade
10:25You know as the name
10:27It's sticks
10:28And people as well
10:30Which is quite fun when you get that right
10:31That's cool
10:32It's pretty well isn't it
10:33Yeah
10:33So we've got a cluster grenade
10:35So that's again grenade into grenades
10:39We've got a cluster chuck grenade
10:42This is the end of the presentation, I can break the computer
10:45The cluster chuck grenade is a recursive spawning grenade
10:50What could go wrong?
10:53It'll just use all your ammo
10:54But he's got 1000 grenades
10:56So take cover
10:57So it's probably going to break the machine
10:59Ah, I was in a carethrow but
11:02It's over dude
11:04Restart machine
11:06It gets
11:07This is where
11:09They all split into two
11:10They all split into four
11:14That was pretty damn good
11:18Obviously
11:20This is white box
11:21Yeah
11:22And this is also pre-bake
11:25So
11:26It's
11:27Whilst you'll get some visual idea of what it's going to be like
11:30There's some bits that you literally won't be able to visually read
11:33Sure
11:33Because they're things that are in shadow
11:35There's no definition at all
11:37Okay
11:38But this should give you a sense of the sort of scale of things
11:41And the breadth
11:43It's not finished
11:46But I think I've basically got in as much work as I could
11:51So
11:53This is now the sort of central kind of public area
11:57Okay
11:59I'm just going to explain the buildings as I go
12:01Yep
12:01This thing is like
12:02Will be like a puzzle
12:03Where there's these chutes that fire you off in random directions
12:07But these doors will be closed
12:08And each of these pads will have some sort of puzzle
12:10And that chute basically fires you to a different part of the world
12:13It's just a bit of a fun side thing
12:16Nice
12:18So that's something you can kind of work towards just environmentally
12:21There'll be a bigger, more extensive one of those
12:23Which I'll do when I have time
12:26This is kind of like a bus stop
12:28You've seen these platforms before
12:30So there'll be buses pulling in and people getting on and off
12:32Can you get on the buses or on the top of the buses?
12:34You can get on top of the buses
12:35Nice
12:38Nice
12:39So then
12:39So this whole area is basically
12:41It's just like a multi-purpose market-y sort of thing
12:45There's no specific mission in mind
12:48This is kind of like your Blade Runner-esque market setting
12:52So all these will be lit
12:53And these are kind of noodle bars and whatever
12:55Yep
12:56That's why I've darkened it a little bit
12:58We've got a bit of a nano-med marketing facility here
13:02Which I have packing titles across there
13:05This is one of the kind of more mission-based structures
13:12So here there'll be a choke point here
13:15So you can elect to stealth this way
13:18To get through it
13:20So you can stealth up there
13:22To get past this choke
13:25And then it kind of takes you up this spiraling tower
13:30Which will have different kind of patrol routes
13:34It's all very uniform so it shouldn't be too hard
13:37But you can sneak or fight your way up
13:39It's a little bit of a climb
13:41So this is now one of the high points
13:43And you can actually see kind of all the way
13:46To the original area from here
13:52And quite a bit into the new stuff
13:57So it's quite a cool mission
13:59Quite an extensive one
14:00And I think quite a key point that you can use later on
14:03Yeah
14:04Especially using F-sniping
14:07Which is holding F and sniping
14:09You'll be able to get marks all the way across the map
14:12Good to speed
14:12Wow, okay
14:13From locations such as this
14:15F-sniping
14:16Yeah
14:16OP
14:18You've got it all there right
14:19Well like once again
14:20Just absolutely amazing
14:22This looks really good
14:23Yeah
14:23And it just looks in keeping what you've done so far
14:25And it also looks manageable
14:26Which is like
14:28Just
14:29Yeah
14:29Fantastic
14:30That's awesome
14:31Thanks guys
14:31Thank you
14:32Looks great
14:33Cool
14:34What a cool city to be playing in
14:36Thanks
14:36Thanks
14:36Thanks
14:37Thanks
14:46Thanks
14:46So how did it go do you think?
14:49Alright
14:49Could have gone better
14:52Yeah
14:52I kind of realised how many gaps there were in the work
14:56You kind of like head down in the crunch
14:58And
14:59And
15:01Yeah
15:02Just
15:03There's so much
15:03There's so many gaps
15:04Like in terms of my work
15:05It was just like
15:06You kind of
15:07I was in it
15:08And it looked all busy and stuff
15:09And then you kind of look at the whole thing
15:10And you're like
15:11Oh god
15:11There's so many spaces
15:13I think
15:14Magic's being a bit hard on himself
15:15I think we showed them like lots
15:17And they seem pretty happy
15:20I'm certainly happy with it
15:21And I think that's more important
15:22And they can see that we're happy
15:24And they know that we've got
15:25We can do what's required to get it done
15:28Yeah
15:28I'm happy
15:29But in the same breath
15:31I'm also
15:31I feel like
15:32I didn't really have that much to show
15:34So
15:36It was weird
15:36You know
15:37Yeah but it's all technical stuff
15:38You can't really show
15:39Yeah lots of technical stuff
15:40Look here's more code
15:42Look how many times I typed the letter B
15:45That's the unfortunate plight
15:48Of the coders
15:48You can't really show off the word
15:50Thanks
15:50Looking after us
15:51Not the coders
15:53No it went well
15:54It's enjoyable as always
15:56You know
15:57They shared their thoughts liberally
15:59That's my fault
16:00Which is good
16:00And none of it was too terrible
16:03Or scathing rather
16:06Yeah
16:06Yeah
16:07That was good
16:08Time for beer
16:09Time for beer
16:12Sweet Jesus
16:20You know
16:21We'll see you next week
16:22Bye
16:22Bye
16:22Bye
16:23Bye
16:32You
16:33Bye
16:34Bye
