00:11We basically wanted
00:11to try a bunch of different demos, see what worked inside
00:14of VR. And then from that point
00:16we kind of expounded on
00:18them. We wanted to do a little bit more storytelling.
00:20When we had
00:21any gameplay element, we started thinking,
00:23is this VR centric? Is this something that
00:25would make the player go, oh my god, this is new.
00:28A child lost
00:30is always something that kind of
00:32touches us inside, but
00:34imagine this in a planet
00:35full of dinosaurs.
00:37I had a pretty clear idea
00:39ever since Back to Dino's Island 1
00:41what we could make out of 3D
00:44living dinosaurs in virtual reality.
00:47From a concept point of view,
00:48yes, we could do a traditional game, but from
00:50an experience point of view, this immersive gameplay
00:51experience, I don't think we would be able to
00:53achieve it with all we are.
01:02If you think about it, it ticks off all the boxes.
01:04If you think about it, it ticks off all the boxes.
01:05You know, alien planet, dinosaurs, robots.
01:10I mean, you can't really get a better game than that.
01:13It started out with us being inquisitive about a new medium,
01:16which was VR.
01:19And in this process, we established
01:20some demos, and from these demos
01:23out came a very, very
01:25interesting story, and it
01:26moved us down a path
01:28where we were able to deliver something
01:30really amazing.
01:32So the core element of Robinson was actually
01:35a spirit of exploration.
01:37This was the very first pillar of the game.
01:40The second one was survival.
01:42Survival starts with scanning the environment
01:44to get a better understanding
01:45of what this planet is about,
01:47and also to know which creature are dangerous,
01:50which are friendly.
01:51And we must not forget that
01:52the whole motivation behind
01:54driving the player in discovering
01:56is, really, you crash-landed
01:58on this planet.
01:59You were part of an exploration team.
02:01You were sent to colonize a planet.
02:03It's your job.
02:04And it's your job.
02:05And something happened before the landing
02:07that caused the spaceship to crash.
02:09Now you're alone?
02:11In a way, a lot of these decisions
02:12were kind of reverse-engineered because of VR.
02:15So we say, okay, in VR you can't walk very fast,
02:17so we need a protagonist that cannot walk very fast.
02:20And the same thing goes for the scanning.
02:22We knew everybody looks at everything constantly,
02:23so let's just make that your official job.
02:25That's a good way to pace the game.
02:28We want to be able to build environments
02:29that are amazing in terms of size and expanse.
02:35However, we have to have a robot
02:37delivering narrative and driving us to a level,
02:40so we don't wander off into vast expanses.
02:42So a lot of times we had to think through game design
02:45that allowed us to stay somewhat linear.
02:48It is an open map, and you can go anywhere you want,
02:51but we kind of drive it
02:52so we get the best performance we can.
02:55Still there is a lot of things to learn,
02:57even for the users of VR.
02:59For example, we prepare in some of the demos
03:01awesome things that happen just behind you,
03:03and we lead them to you through audio,
03:06through particles, through lighting,
03:08through whatever you want.
03:09But there are people that will still,
03:11by their own volition,
03:12and not be prepared to turn more than, say,
03:1530 degrees or 40 or 50 degrees to a site.
03:18And that was actually the challenge in the game,
03:20to make sure that no matter where you're looking at,
03:22there's something.
03:23But I think through different generations of games,
03:26we will re-educate the player.
03:29Imagine what it is to sneak,
03:31like you would sneak in Jurassic Park behind the kitchen.
03:34Remember that sequence?
03:35But imagine that in VR now,
03:37where you're actually the one leading the camera.
03:39And if you peak too soon,
03:42or at the wrong time,
03:43it's game over.
03:45They charge at you and they kill you.
03:49Like I said earlier,
03:50it kind of ticks off those boxes.
03:52I said it jokingly,
03:52but in all reality,
03:54sci-fi is one of my favorite things,
03:56as well as dinosaurs,
03:58as well as, you know,
03:59survival journey type of adventures.
04:01I think all these things, you know,
04:04provided the opportunity to build,
04:06you know,
04:06what I think is one of the most awesome experiences
04:08I've seen in a game today.
04:19Achieved with CryEngine.
